I highly recommend this spot if you're in the St. Michael's area. This was my first time and my fiance and I stopped by for Valentine's Day and apparently it's been built up since the last time he visited with more shops in and around in walking distance. The winery itself sits inside with an artists boutique so you can wine and shop. The winery selection isn't too bad if you have a sweeter taste in wine. If you like more dry, the reds are the way to go! The best and most surprising one was their chocolate Zin. The service is what makes this place a 5 star! The staff that served us was so nice! She took time to not just pour the wine but actually talk to us and shared some stories and chatted for a while! Lovely lowkey winery. I can't believe I hadn't been here until now. Definitely really popular for their sweet wines. I did the sweet wine flight honorable mentions were definitely be white sweet wine made with Chardonnay grapes, and the peach, sweet wine, which had a subtle edge to it unlike the first. Certainly not for lovers of dry red as they actually did not have any red wines available. They sent me to another winery up the street that's focused on dry reds, which or a stark contrast to this experience. All in all, we absolutely walked away with one bottle of wine with a beautiful logo and a memory of Saint Michaels Maryland. I will ensure to come back during my yearly visit. The sangria was also a noteworthy mention. It reminded me of the delicious Costco sangria that we always enjoy during the holidays except a much more sophisticated flavor, profile, and easy beverage! I would imagine it would do deliciously in a mulled wine for the season. The front desk attendant was absolutely lovely and also did our tasting extremely Courteous and explained the wines in a straightforward fashion. The bottles were reasonable between $12-$14 and the glasses of wine were approximately six dollars. The chocolate zin is a super unique and yummy pick, but we went for the amazing blackberry gollywobbler and we are so excited to pop it open for a special occasion. It's so easy to have a lovely experience at the St. Michael's Winery Tasting Room. Plenty of parking, close to shops, with an art gallery sharing the same building. There are a variety of tastings - the "dry" flight, the "sweet" flights, and a "choose your own" option. The wine servers are supportive and allow you to enjoy what you have selected. We had so much fun at St. Michaels Winery! God bless the "staff picks" flight- it was delicious and extensive! Most flights are 4 or 5 tastings- this one was at least 7. I really liked the grapefruity Sauv Blanc and the blackberry sweet wine. Whitney was our pourer and she was knowledgeable and fun and engaging. I think everyone was very impressed on how well she kept up with the 18 different groups in the tasting room! We bought several bottles to bring home that were well received at Thanksgiving! Already planning another trip back to St Michaels and this will for sure be one of our first stops! read more

Perfection! 4 dollars for a flight of wine! The gentleman serving the wine who's name I didn't catch was super awesome and great to talk to you. He had a lot of great stories about the area as well as the winery itself. I loved how he serve the flight and explained each type of wine that we were drinking my husband and I ended up purchasing a bottle of dry red her our usual. However if you are in Saint Michael's and have some time this is definitely the place to stop by. As I looked over I did notice that the other person working at the winery was just is engaged as our wine tasting person was. I will most definitely be back! read more

Visiting MD from out of state and a friend had mentioned visiting here, so we went to check it out. Coming from the Finger Lakes, I was looking forward to trying wine from another small region. What a disappointment it ended up being! The tasting room was poorly-lit, dingy, and clearly in need of some TLC. Only one other couple was there but they left soon after we arrived. The staff (one young lady behind the register and one in the back room sitting in a chair) offered little to no help until asked and no one offered to discuss the wine. We were handed our flights and found a table. The employees sat at another table and chatted with one another, loudly. Despite the sign on the door stating that masks were mandatory, no one inside was wearing one except us. The girl at register had on on her chin. The flights (one sweet, one dry) were pre-poured in 1 oz plastic cups that were placed in clear plastic boxes. The fill levels were wildly inconsistent and tiny (some less than 1/4 full), all of the the wine was room temperature, the sparking sample was flat, all all of them tasted like they been sitting out all day. The overall quality was poor, at best. I'd expected much more from the reds - but they were thin, lifeless, and lacked any real flavor. The sweet wine flight had far too many samples with overpowering Concord and Niagara. The best was the peach as the fruit and sugar helped to mask the flaws, but it really needed to be chilled to be at its best. The chocolate Zin appeared to have some low-quality cocoa powder added; it was far from "premium" and had a distinct artificial flavor. Needless to say, this is one place I will never visit again and cannot recommend. read more

One of my Favorites!! This was our second visit to the winery. Our wine club came last year and had the pleasure of having John pour for our tasting. He was awesome last year and awesome this time around!! We tasted about 6 wines and a new desert wine. The winery is small but fun. This is a cute little tasting room on the main street in St. Michaels. The wine used to be produced in town, but once production became too large, they moved it to about 40 minutes away. The wooden bar wraps around in the tasting room, but if it is crowded, I would suspect you may have to wait to step up to an open area. Around 2:15pm on a Sunday, it was crowded, but we were able to sneak ourselves in. Patrons after us had to wait for a spot. The tasting room is open year-round, M-Th 11am-6pm, Fri-Sat 11am-7pm, and Sunday 11am-4pm. There are a few different options for tastings. You can "choose your own flight" at $1 per sample, or you can choose one of the "predetermined" flights based on your preferences. You could also taste all of the wines for $18.00. We were told the most popular option is the $10 staff favorites tasting. We both, however, chose to do the $7 dry white wines tasting. Any regular wine is purchasable by the glass for $5 and the reserved wines for $7. They also sell bottles and some merchandise. Lisa served the tasting and was extremely affable and knowledgeable about the wine she was pouring. We sampled: +Long Splice: This wine was very easy drinking, perfect for a summer day. It's a blend of Chardonnay and Seyval grapes. Very crisp finish. +Sauvignon Blanc: Had nice, grapefruit notes but not overly sweet. Again, lovely for a patio drink. +Pinot Gris: This was dry and crisp, very smooth going down but then a "pucker"-like after effect from the sour apple flavor. Some pear notes as well. +Vidal Blanc Reserve: Very simple, citrus-y table wine. Perfect to bring to a dinner-very easily drinkable and likable. +Maryland Chardonnay: This is in steel barrels so it has a smooth taste, not oakey. Strong sweet apple notes, citrus finish. +"Oakey Dokey" Chard: Very oakey, some citrus notes. This was my least favorite. +Chocolate Zin: All of the flights end with this wine. Red Zinfandel infused with chocolate. Tasted like the inside of a chocolate cherry. Could drizzle over ice cream or pound cake, but why do that when you can drink it! Be careful though, it's alcohol content is around 15% so use moderation! Overall, I enjoyed the tasting room and the wines I sampled. My favorite were the Pinot Gris and Maryland Chardonnay. I would definitely return to sample the other flights/wines that I wasn't able to in the future! read more

I went back and found an 8.5 x 11 sign taped in the back window which wasn't visible when we went in (door was held open). After enjoying the wine at a friend's house, I went online to order some. Noting that there was a case discount and free shipping (with the banner "wine is heavy!"), I decided to up my order to a full case. When I went to check out, the free shipping wasn't being applied so I called the winery. The gentleman who answered was gruff and abrupt, indicating that they needed to get that off their website and that they didn't offer free shipping, even on a case order. I asked if they would honor the advertisement that was on their website, and he he barked "no!" As you might guess, I deleted my order and will find a friendlier winery to support. I have a major weakness for local wineries. My expectations are usually fairly low for the wine, but experiencing what the grapes in the area are capable of is exciting to me. My family stopped in one afternoon, and were greeted by two women who seemed to be running the whole shebang, and were incredibly knowledgeable of the product. Tastes were $1 each and very generous. The reds left something to desire, but we were told that a few of the ones we tried still needed to age a couple years to truly blossom. That was pretty evident - lots of potential! But to our surprise, my mother and I fell head over heels in love with their Sauvignon Blanc. Light, crisp, and perfect for the end of summer. They happened to be having a sale, so we were able to pick up 3 bottles for $30! The winery is most renowned for its Chocolate Zin, a dessert zinfandel infused with...you guessed it....chocolate! I am NOT a dessert wine person, and nearly choked on this trying to drink it straight. However, it stuck with me, so I picked up a bottle at a local liquor store and brought it home to experiment. Drizzled a little on vanilla coconut milk ice cream, and my cool treat was reinvented. Angel food cake took on a whole new meaning soaked in Chocolate Zin. I love it! If you are ever in this beautiful little town in Maryland, you owe it to yourself to stop here and see what they have to offer. Wine glasses are complimentary with tastings! read more

Okay, I'll admit that even though I grew up in Maryland, I barely remember anything from the Eastern Shore, even though we had a summer house in Ocean City. I guess my parents zipped straight on through without ever stopping, except perhaps for breakfast somewhere near Salisbury. Well, during my latest trip to Maryland I decided it'd be nice to visit a quaint town like St. Michaels, so we did. We came on a lovely weekday with highs in the 60s. One problem: the town was almost deserted. Now, it was late fall so I know the summer crowds were gone. And yes, St. Michaels is beautiful and full of history, but we really needed something to do. So we pulled out our map and found the St. Michaels Winery. Perfect! We did some wine tasting, had cheese and crackers, and ended up buying two bottles that we planned to check in for our flight back to California. Such a shame that we arrived at the airport too late and had to leave our wines with the staff at Alaska Airlines. (I hope they put the bottles to good use!) But in terms of friendliness, taste, and knowledge, the staff and wine at this winery can't be beat. I can't wait to come back and buy some more, or wait for Maryland to relax its wine shipping laws so I can order some from the West Coast! read more

As long-time local Maryland winery drinkers, we've always enjoyed St. Michaels wines. We've been to the winery before and had enjoyable experiences. But with the new Covid-cautious routine, we were very disappointed that there was no bartender to discuss the wines with us, and the quantity of wine per plastic shot cup was about 1/3 of what it was previously-approx less than half a shot. The whole place could use some help from Bar Rescue- to turn it into a place where people want to be (musty hallways, dirty carpets, dinged walls). The ONE bartender who stood behind the plexiglass-glass was rarely present and we had to ring the bell to check out. The drinks are already excellent-let's get the tastings back to what they were before, and improve the setting. They'd make a killing with some minor changes. read more

Now I will say this has been one of the more crowded wineries I have been to in Maryland, outside of Boordy. They have ample space for doing their tastings, and they even do some of the tastings in the rooms where they have the steel wine vats. The winery itself is a cool spot. We sampled a flight of about 10 wines I do believe. Unfortunately you do not get to sample all of their wines. You must pick a flight and then you get to sample a portion of their wines. Or you can just do $1.00 per tasting and sample various wines. The wines were not all that good, and we did not buy any while we were here. The wines were a bit watery and the sugars were not balanced very well in the whites. The deeper tastes you expect in the red wines were missing due to the watery flavors. I was a bit disappointed in the flavor of the wines, but at least we walked out with two wine glasses. read more

[Party of 8] We found ourselves at this tasting room on a very hot and very crowded day in July. We all sidled up to the counter and Carol took care of us. They have several tasting types available: Sweet, Dry, House Choice, and Drunk. Okay, the last one was not their term but it was a taste of all 18 wines they had available. Needless to say, I went with the Drunk tasting. All of the wines were fine in taste, a few did stand out. Amongst our party we ended up getting about 6 bottles to go. I got a bottle of Gollywobbler Black, not for myself though as I found it a tad sweet. The tastings are priced fair and if you like wine, especially on the sweet side, I recommend stopping in. All she told me was they are both different. One is peach and the other is a sangria. Well no shit Sherlock. Tell me something I don't already know. No knowledge at all. We came to St Michael's after hearing so much how good the Gollywobbler sweet wines were. They were great, and we found others to love too. Darien was wine pourer. Once the place thinned out she gave us her undivided attention with her wine knowledge, food pairings and even other food you can make with the wine. So hard to decide which wines to take home, we bought 3!!! Loved them all but bought the sangria, full throttle and chocolate zin, because they were so different and complex. I just read Elaine M.'s review for St Michael's Winery and agree 100%. I'll try to give my own opinion, although it mirror' Elaine M.'s! My friends and I strolled into St Michaels Winery on a Saturday afternoon after we attended an Oyster Festival. What I thought was a cute atmosphere immediately turned negative when the man behind the bar offering our tastings rushed us through the whole tasting, didn't acknowledge us and our questions, and didn't seem to care to do his job properly. Is it bad to mention that his bed head was out of control? I was very disappointed in this experience and will not be back. read more

And then they're kinda snotty to you when you go in at 4:23 pm and they're wiping down the counters. C'mon St Michaels Winery, you can do way better. 3.5 stars ------------------------------------------------- I traveled through a flood to get here. And I will tell you its worth it! The winery is small. Its NOT located on a vineyard, but they bring in their grapes from various locations to make their wine. (Havre de Grace in particular) Although they charge for their tastings, you do get to keep their St Michaels Winery logo'd wine glass after the fact! In general, you can taste a wine for $1.00 per sampling. They have about 20 wines which means you can spend up to $20.00 to sample them all. If you find a wine that you like you can also get those by the glass. They also have wine sampling flights (to make it easier on you to decide which wines you'd like to sample). Again, each flight comprises anywhere between 6 to 10 samples, so you are charged by the number of samplings in each flight. I chose the Award Winners flight, 10 samples for $10.00 and have to say that it is worth it. Also, this winery features tastings of Cheese from Chapel Creamery one of the few places in the states where you can purchase RAW MILK CHEESE legally. They did not have cheese available for tasting on this day, but I did manage to purchase a whole block to take with me. read more

I've been here twice. The more recent visit took place just two days ago. We had the dry red tasting, and unfortunately I did not find most of the wines to my liking. They were all really light and lacking some depth to suit my taste. Even though I ended up purchasing a bottle of the Island Belle sangiovese, it was more because I didn't mind the light and sweet nature of the wine. On the other hand, the chambourcin and cab sauv are supposed to be fuller bodied, in my opinion, and I felt both were lacking in that respect. The sangiovese is actually almost like a rosé; it'll probably go well with seared scallops and asparagus or grilled chicken. The last wine in the red tasting, the chocolate zin, has a really delicious aroma, but I would prefer a heavier dessert wine - more like a port - that has a thicker texture. I think all their grapes are from Maryland, though not Saint Michaels. The winery itself is pretty small and nestled in a small building. It certainly appears humble compared to most of the wineries in northern Virginia that have their vineyards right on site, oftentimes with expansive views of mountains or meadows. The tasting fee is basically $1 per wine, and you can pick the wines you want to try instead of their predesigned "dry white," "dry red" (even though not all these are indeed dry), or dessert tastings. read more

If you like fruit juice, this is the spot for you. For wine connoisseurs their "wine" is super sweet fruit juice with a bit of alcohol. That said, their wine makes great sangria and fruit based drinks. I recommend cutting up any fruit and mixing it into the wine. The best wine they offer that stands on its own is the chocolate Zin. For those looking for better options, my friends and I migrated to the brewery next door that has a great selection of beer.
