I was always proud that this church stayed out of politics as we wanted to open our doors warmly to all seekers. I addressed this concern and only one campus minister took the time to address it with me. I used to be deeply embedded and employed at a church years ago.. the writing is on the wall as to what type of man this new pastor is.. he refused to remove his post despite it being so polarizing and harmful. I'm sad to say I left the church. It's been very upsetting to say the least.. this church is not for what it used to be. The church never helped me in speaking to any of the elders despite my requests... I was 10% tithing at the time too. All I can do is throw my hands up. I volunteered at this church, took the classes, lead small group and workshops.. didn't just attend worship. Some day the pastor will have to answer as to why his ego made him drive away people from their home church and/or closed opportunities to share the gospel just because he refused to take down his post. I know there are others who left for the same reasons. What happened to the thoughtful "leaders" of my church? Truly sad.

Here, our children are not just numbers, they are cared for by mature believers who I know are sound in their doctrine and biblically based. I don't have to have my children tagged and scanned in with a bar code as other church systems require; that is not how we parent. When my children walk into our bi-annual Women's Tea they are known and loved by every person in the room -- and waited on hand and foot, so kind. We have truly been welcomed into this church family and I am personally being mentored/encouraged by several of the incredible Christians here, including a 92-year-old member who still serves at every opportunity. Pastor Danny has read the Bible more than 80 times; he is a man to look up to. Vacation Bible School has been an incredible ministry for our family as well. In addition to Kids Alive, which my daughters have enjoyed since they were babies, singing the music and enjoying the choreography, friendships, and of course, seeing their friends every single week. Their confidence is blooming, along with their knowledge of the Bible.

If you're a Christian in Orange County, I bet I know you in less than 3 degrees of separation. So when it came time to find a new church, I didn't have a problem finding places to visit. The difficulty was finding a place to stay. My husband and I visited close to 30 Orange County churches over the course of a year. Maybe I'll post my reviews of them later. St. John was the first church where we felt really welcome (not just here's a nametag welcome.) It's Eastern Orthodox so visiting this church will most likely be different than anything you've ever experienced. Because of this, it will also be closer to the early church than anything else in Orange County -- or Christendom for that matter. The Orthodox Church is beautiful and liturgical and totally focused on God. If you come, prepare to be overwhelmed, but make sure to stick around for coffee and snack (more like lunch) afterward. There are plenty of people who will say hello and answer any questions you have. The main service starts at 10 am. If you're tired of the church scene and are looking for more when it comes to being a Christian, this ancient faith in a post-modern context will change your life.

A review of sermons now on YouTube today shows Tom still wonderfully engaged in faithful service to Christ and His Word, only stronger and more mature (we were honored to be attending there when Tom gave his first sermon as the church was seeking a new pastor)! Tom's a gifted preacher and WILL spur you to spiritual growth if you're attentive to his preaching. It's really cool to hear him hitting on the same themes of the supremacy of our Lord's Word, iconoclasm to the idols of our times, and loving service to one another, among others. I recall now how much we love him for his dedication to the Church of Christ. I'm a little surprised there aren't more reviews here, but we Presbyterians can be oft too restrained in praise of man. But, sometimes it's duly earned and needs to be stated forthrightly. If you're of a mind to try this church you definitely should!
