I don't personally attend this church but I've been before with friends and I know people who do. Me and my family are culturally Jewish and attend temple. A young boy, pictured in the screenshot, walked up to our door handing out pamphlets and inviting people to join him at church. Obviously this is a regular thing in churches, however after learning we didn't attend church and instead went to temple, he asked us what we thought about jesus and went on to say we were going to hell and we're basically uneducated. I give people the benefit of the doubt, but in what world does telling someone they're going to hell and that we are 'wrong' in this situation after being kind and polite get you? This is not how to recruit people for your church at all. Train your followers better. read more

Feels more like a shopping center with a bookstore, cafe, etc. A lot can change for improvements. Checking their ego is the place to start. Went to a Thursday night talk. Mike, says some extremely ignorant and irresponsible things from his pulpit. I have been in recovery for over 20 years. Why recovery works is because it is someone that's been there helping others struggling. The message to people who struggle with substance abuse must have depth and weight. So that Thursday night he said the reason I don't have ministry for recovery is because I don't see how someone that is having the same problem is going to help someone overcome their difficulties. It was a dangerous, ignorant statement. I have tried to go back but not feeling a whole lotta love coming from that man. Mike's obviously never struggled with addiction otherwise he would have realized what an arrogant thing to say that was. I've tried to go back but since that night he lost me. His sermons are robotic and lack depth and emotional resonance. Pompous Bible Church is a better name for what he has going on there. read more

I first heard "Pastor" Mike Fabarez online and was shocked by what I heard. The sermon was hyper political and very negative about left wing politics. I couldn't tell if I was watching Fox news or a church sermon. I get we all have our opinions, but I did not feel the love of Jesus or his sprit in what he preached. My friend recently took her kids here for the small group, and again Mike led with a sermon filled with Judgment and condemnation that was supposed to be about song of songs. She was so troubled by it she had to run out. I think if your looking for a Christian nationalist church that is exclusive to one type of group this is a great fit. The really drive the point if you are any type of "other" or immigrant. If you are from a minority background stay away. You are not welcome here. read more

Just updating my review from previously. After attending a compass for 5+ years I think it deserves an update from before. While I strongly agree with their weekend messages 95% of the time, that 5% that I don't is pretty serious because it has implications for everyone at the church. I'd give the weekend sermons at 5/5 but the culture a 1/5. In the last 3 years the church has grown to be more openly complementarian. They really were not previously, or at least it was not as obvious. They are hard-line complementarian, don't let them fool you. So much so they had Owen Strachan come to speak. Owen basically tells men they must be "alpha males." What this means is that as a church member they see hierarchy and these patterns in everything both in and out of church. If you are male there are expectations just like if you are female. These church cultural expectations (not biblical ones mind you!) mean that for men you need to 1) be married, preferably before 25, and 2) have children. For women it means 1) you should be meek/submissive (aka never have an opinion or speak up--- about anything even if your spouse is flat out wrong because it would be "usurpring his headship.") 2) you cannot ever lead anything 3) The ideal is 1950's housewife, staying at home taking care of preferably 3+ children, or working from the home--- not outside of it!. The bottom line is your value is your womb, not any other accomplishments. So if you hit over 30 and have no children... /whelp!/ There is no place for singles to just be single at church. If you are unable to have kids, well tough taco! You will be seen as less than... and god help it if you do not want any..... better not express that opinion.. ever. Given that 50%+ of the surrounding population is single, its very sad to see the emphasis (and idol) of family be the "end all be all" of the church. I thought it was about making disciples, not trying to re-establish 1950 (which only works for the wealthy by the way, and a lot of those women were on drugs~ (fyi)!). They've gotten too caught up in broader cultural "wars" at Compass, at least when it comes to the community and church culture itself. If they just stuck to the Gospel and making disciples of all people, it would be a lot better. There is nothing wrong with people who want a family and all, but that is not how we make disciples. That is not superior to preaching the gospel. Children shouldn't have more value than the single person sitting next to you. And other than the senior pastors, men and women should be able to do the work of the gospel, including running small groups if single. I've seen many a talented person overlooked because they weren't married. Jesus Himself would be overlooked at this place, or Paul. Now that has to make you scratch your head.... I have yet to see a positive example of a single person really held up during the teaching sermons at ANY compass church (ever!). It is like they are simply not supposed to exist. Positives: Nice building, fairly easy parking situation, plenty of room to get involved, solid biblical teaching when it comes to salvation and redemption and repentance. They have a very active community. Negative: Gender and status rules/regulations that are not openly presented until you get involved, "alpha male" ideology, singles seen as "less than," marrieds. Extremely questionable textual exegesis straight from the SBC related to 3 verses to support these concepts. They won't admit its cultural and claim its "God's created order." (shhh don't talk about those passages in Hebrew and not ESV!) In conclusion- I still really appreciate a lot of the work Mike does for the church, and also his radio program, but hard-line complementarian doctrine is not Biblical (really is eternal subordination of the son the hill you are going to die on?) and honestly is dangerous for women and alienates many people who the church could reach if they dropped their internal hierarchical system and cultural baggage that goes with it. It is fine if the senior pastor is male, who cares? but all the cultural stuff? Please. It sadly reeks of SBC. The people in south OC need the Gospel, not culture to save them! read more

Really down to earth church that shares the truth and includes the meat and potatoes. We only attended one service so I cannot say if it would be a place we would plant our feet if we loved in the area. We wanted to spend time showing appreciation being able to vacation safely as a family together and not forgetting those who we are praying for in our lives. read more

I'm a pastor in a church in San Diego. I attend Compass when on vacation in OC (this is where my in-laws live). I have attended about five services and read some of this pastor's books and essays. I watch some talks from their pastor on Instagram. I have no insentive to say this because I don't know anyone at this church and I'm not a member (this church isn't even the style or specific denomination I like) but I have never heard or seen anything at Compass that would indicate they are a bad church or teach false doctrines. In fact, I find the teaching here sound and refreshing in a culture that increasingly drowning in postmodernism. Some notes: 1. This is a Bible church and it's services are set up around an orthodox, high view of scripture. It is not set up as a charismatic or community church. That means the emphasis in this church is more on scripture than worship or community. They still do worship and community though! 2. This church has done well to contextualize into Orange County. If southern OC (AV, LN) is not your style, this church may not be your style either. That said, the gospel is for everyone. 3. This church is not loose. They run a tight ship and don't make decisions based on feelings. That might hurt some feelings but hurt feelings aren't always a bad thing. I have read a couple posts where people were offended that they didn't get to do whatever they want or becuase the advice they got was a little too direct. But again, any serious Christian church is going to have to take a stand somewhere. The best line to draw is on scripture. "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." -Proverbs 27:6 Churches are meant to be counter culture. If there aren't some offended, angry haters, it's probably not a real church to begin with. Anyway, I don't know everything about Compass. But as a pastor myself (of a very different kind of church) I can say that I get it and I would recommend this church. If somehow my kids ended up coming here I would be pleased. read more

This is God's church, there is nothing said from the pulpit to sell or convince anyone to come or give, just the "God honest truth" to the best of the pastors ability. I love that this church gives you so many resources to challenge your faith, grow your faith and to meet loving caring individuals that are on that same journey. Seriously no shoving religion on anyone, just sharing the gospel and not sugar coating it. They tell you not to take their word for it, but search the scriptures, God's Word, and find it for yourself. In the same way there are an abundant amount of saints and pastors to support you on your journey or sanctification. I thank God daily for the knowledge I have gained and the trajectory it has assisted my teen in loving Jesus and His purpose. My family and I attended a couple of services and we know people who go here. The judgmental approach to others is not a Christian approach. One of our teens has attended for the past year and we supported it, feeling that even though we were concerned about some of the approaches and teachings, it was providing a bible-based foundation. The outcome for our teen has been a desperate and increasing need to belong, be accepted and depression. What belief system would encourage someone not to spend time with their own family because they are "non-believers". We believe in God and we worship, but not at this church. After some research, I believe this church is a cult. Look up signs of a cult and you will find some similarities such as: This church does not tolerate critical thinking You have to be judged to be "worthy" or "Christian enough" or you will be isolated and not included They have their own "twist" on the scriptures. Twist is a mild term. The minister is elevated to almost worship status - newsflash - he is just a man. Dishonoring the family unit - at this church, first and foremost is God and if your family is deemed not to be "Christian enough" you can disengage from them. This is not only scary - it is wrong. I've read the negative reviews and it reinforces my opinion this is a cult. If you really follow the teachings of Jesus, you can leave your judgment of others to God. If you are really secure in your beliefs, you can love those who are not members of your church or even a Christian at all. Isn't that the love Jesus taught? It is certainly the love I believe in. I am not perfect, but I strive to be the best person I can be and that is through humility, not through a false sense of superiority gained through membership of a certain church. read more

UPDATE: A pastor has called me a fraudulent coward and had my review removed from Facebook for daring to disagree -- respectfully -- with the church. This is not leadership. This is man-children playing church and lording it over their ward. I had given this church several stars initially, then reduced it to 2 after they refused to speak with me. After the censorship and personal attacks from Pete, I have reduced the rating to one star. This church is terrible, and the leadership is terrible, and it should be avoided at all costs. Trying, but failing. Teaching is consistently unbiblical. Sermon review follows to demonstrate the typical problems, based on April 8 2017 sermon allegedly on James 5:19-20: The sermon is an agenda-driven piece on how not going to church means you aren't saved. This, despite the alleged source passage being from a book written not to and from a single church, but "to the twelve tribes dispersed abroad". So when Mr. Mike Fabarez says that being "among us" and no longer being "among us" refers to local church involvement, he's completely off base. He says that *throughout Hebrews* we're told to be involved in a local church. But that isn't so. There is one verse in chapter 10 understood by many to refer to church involvement, but that's it. Fabarez explicitly interprets "went out from us" to refer to not being in church. Amazing. He actually says that not being in church means you don't have saving faith. I'm sure he wouldn't stick to that if pressed, but nonetheless he did explicitly state it. He interprets Hebrews 10:26 as saying that those who don't meet together are those who will face judgment. But 10:26 speaks about those who abandon the faith and go on in sin, not those who don't meet together. In this context, it's explicitly reference to those who return to Judaism after learning of its true conclusion in Christ. He gives an example of AWANA graduates now grown who -- I thought he would say live in sin, a this point -- don't attend church because with three kids they're too busy. He says they're not backslidden -- they're simply not saved at all. Amazing. Even if one agreed with Fabarez -- and they shouldn't, because he's wrong -- that church involvement is almost the same as salvation, he still fails completely to draw that connection from the text, rather doing eisegesis to find it where it isn't. So much for a doctorate and decades of experience making one fit for ministry or a capable pastor/teacher. He says this is what Christ was getting at when speaking of Chorazin -- that it's worse if you were involved in church and then not involved, for your judgment (notice he assumes lack of church involvement means lack of salvation) will be worse. He then butchered John 21. After saying he was only giving his own wisdom and not Scriptural teaching (really, that's true of his whole sermon!), he then moralizes John 21 into a lesson on how to win people back to...church...which also means Christ, I guess. If you're going to admit you're not speaking from Scripture, don't try to make a passage (about a single event!) into a lesson on how to win people back to church, because that's sending mixed signals about whether it's your personal idea or whether it's taught in Scripture. Now this is a man who, in a previous sermon, was so committed to his agenda that marriage is about children and "family life" that he made 1 Cor 7:36 about a man not being able to restrain himself sexually towards his betrothed to be about a man being incapable of resisting the desire for family life. Unbelievable. It's about sex, and the couple is already engaged, but Fabarez eisegetes "family life" into the passage and says they're not engaged, rather the boy is simply interested in the girl. Fabarez even explicitly used the term "betrothed" multiple times to describe the girl in this scenario, but then said the girl was not engaged, just some girl the boy liked. Lots of similar problems in that sermon, and really every other sermon from him. The church also seems to put the pre-trib rapture in its very short statement of beliefs, as well as saying that regeneration comes after faith, which is the reverse order of what Scripture says -- that we believe as a *result* of God giving us a new heart (being "born again"). Point is, there are lots of problems here. "The pastor" (another problem, since Scripture teaches a plurality of equal elders, not one guy on top) has an agenda in what he teaches, and that agenda overrides Scripture. Bad teaching, bad exegesis. I don't even disagree that things like church involvement and forsaking family life for Christ are good things to talk about, but unlike Fabarez, I wouldn't twist Scripture to fit my agenda. I hope he reads this and seriously examines his teaching. read more

I love this church. I stumbled upon Compass via Google Maps and started attending regularly. Instead of preaching "feel good" sermons, Mike Fabarez speaks truth found in God's word (Bible). God's word is not a "feel good" book. It is full of clear direction, encouragement, and challenges. This church does a great job equipping its congregation on how to live a holy life in an unholy world. Instead of following misleading traditions, Compass Bible Church spreads truth by preaching God's inarguable word. They do not pick and choose parts of the bible to take out of context. So, today, my family and I happened to visit your church for the first time. The service was great and we certainly enjoyed it until Chaplain @GeorgeIgawa stepped in to point out that my four-year old should not be partaking in communion because he has no way of being born again. After 20+ years of being a Christian myself, I have come to know that many who put themselves out there claiming to be - and many of our Christian leaders - are far from it. George is obviously one of those people. Considering there were several hundred people in the service - many of whom I would venture to guess are not born again - partaking in communion, they thought nothing of pulling me aside to single my family out. Good luck building a church and 'planting' others with this close-minded, tactless, holier-than-though mentality. Pastor @mikefabarez 's book should be entitled 'Getting it Wrong' versus 'Getting it Right.' If you are new to Christianity, a 4-year old, or a 44-year old who was never born again, stay away from this church because you are obviously not welcome there. read more

My wife and I gave our lives to the Lord and were baptized at Compass Bible Church. The whole staff is great! We love pastor Mike's messages and the fellowship is awesome. Such a great place to grow in the Lord. We also did some marriage counceling with Pastor Luke and God really used him to point us in the right direction. George Igawa was one of the first people we spoke with the first time we visited Compass and he was such a big help. I wont forget how he described what happens at salvation, where Christ, like a sergeon, takes out your heart of stone and gives you a heart of flesh. We're addicted to the Book Store!!! @Jamie L. My family and I have been attending CBC for just shy of 9 years. In that time we have been completely blown away by the sound biblical teaching and the love and care that this body of Christ offers. Upon arriving at this church as a young married couple, we immediately jumped into the Thrive ministry and formed some of our deepest and sweetest friendships. Thrive is an amazing ministry dedicated to couples with young families. The Kids Ministry at Compass has also always been a huge stand-out for us as we partner with them to teach and train our children in God's word. From Jr. High, to Women's Ministry, to the Singles Ministry, to the Refuge (a ministry devoted to families who have adopted or fostered children, or are interested in doing so) to EVERYTHING in between; there is something for anyone at any walk of life at Compass! As if all this weren't enough, the pastors of CBC are all the most sacrificial, loving and most educated pastors I've ever sat under in my entire life of attending church. As you can imagine, in 9 years, our family has been through some wonderful moments but also some hard and trying ones. The pastors at Compass have rejoiced with us and wept with us through the highs and lows and have never failed to be there to PERSONALLY encourage us with the word of God and in our walk with Christ. The same goes for those who attend Compass. This body of believers TRULY acts like a family, everyone willing to serve one another and really truly do life together. I first got introduced to Compass 6 years ago at the High School church camp, Revival. This was my first time ever going to a church camp, and to ever hear real biblical teaching. This was actually when I got saved. After that, I got plugged into their on school programs, weekly small groups, and their weekend services all for high schoolers! I was in the high school ministry for two years before I went to their college ministry. Their college ministry is great as it goes into an extensive study of God's word, and applies it to the lives of college students. Im so thankful that I was under the leadership of this church while I was in college and while so many things were going on in life. It was great to have my small group of guys and an entire ministry that was doing college as well. Currently, my wife (who I met in the college ministry) and I attend the Married ministry, Thrive. We absolutely love going to Thrive and doing life with other couples that are going through the same things as us. We have served in the junior high ministry, high school ministry, and are now serving in the kids ministry. Take it from me that this church really does have it all. If you are thinking of checking Compass out, I would recommend calling and scheduling a tour of our campus. We have been attending Compass Bible Church for over two years. My wife and whole family love all the aspects of this body. A very loving church base on solid bibical principals. The Pastors show compassion in what they beleive and one cannot grow in the LORD better than this church. We have never been better feed in the knowledge of the Word than there. We have been at Compass Bible Church for over 9 years now and have been very happy here. We have worked with numerous levels of ministries from kids to adults, and everything in between. Finding a church that teaches the Gospel, loves and serves God and puts the tools in place to be able to teach others to do the same is harder than one might think. Compass does a great job reaching, teaching and training as well as building highly committed participants. Strong teaching from the pulpit, great worship, opportunities to learn, grow and give back to God and the church around you is what you will find at Compass Bible Church. You won't find "feel-good" sermons or holy-rollers but you will find people willing to teach what the Bible says, unashamedly. Children's programs from infants to junior high and continuing to high school and college run year round mean there is most always something for them to do or be involved in. I have found that you get out what you put in, as with everything in life. Opportunities to grow, connect and serve are everywhere. As with many larger churches: you can sit on the sidelines and come and go with little notice or you can get involved and be a part of what is happening and bless and be blessed by others. No church is going to check every box for every person and thats fine. This is a great church and we have made solid, lasting, loving friendships here but most importantly is, the Bible is preached and not watered down to fill more seats. read more

My first review was from my initial impressions as a first time visitor to Compass Bible Church (CBC). Now I would like to add to my review from the point-of-view as a regular, active attender of CBC. Church size At first I felt overwhelmed in the sea of, I'd estimate around 3,000 adult regular attenders of CBC. I'm probably underestimating this number. I've never attended a church with so many people before, and it was definitely a new experience for my husband, son, and I. We were wondering how we'd have a connection, like we've had in much, much smaller churches. It was a whole new experience for us and something we knew God would lead us through. Women's Bible Study (WBS) I jumped in and started attending the WBS immediately. There are many options for attending: Tues & Wed morning, Tues night, and Thurs in area homes. The study consists of food, songs, teaching, and small group. The Women's Ministry Director, Stephanie, writes the Bible Study and makes it so easy to understand. The teachers vary from week-to-week and they have all been outstanding. It's amazing how many capable women teachers are at CBC: very thankful to God for this. During the small group time, I enjoy hearing how women answer the questions from the study. I've really have gotten to know many women through the study. Jr. High service & ministry - The Narrow Since writing my first review, our son moved from children's church to the Jr. High (7th & 8th grade) church service & ministry. One of the things my husband & I prayed for was a church that had a strong, Bible-centered program and mentors for our son. We are so very pleased and overwhelmed with God's graciousness in answering our prayers. CBC really is beyond what we hoped for in this. Every week, junior high age kids meet for their own service while the adults are in the main service. The service mimics the main service with worship, sermon, and fellowship. The sermon is scripture-filled, understandable, and relatable to their age. In addition to the weekly service is the weekly junior high youth group meeting (The Narrow) which meets for about 2 hours on Friday nights. Kids enjoy interacting through games, eating catered dinner, listening to a group message from a leader in the ministry, and then breaking into small groups for discussion. We are so very impressed with the care and mission of The Narrow and all the leaders involved with the ministry. The Narrow - Activities, Revival & TRAIN Throughout the year, The Narrow offers many fun events & activities which have included paintball, Boomers, trampoline & amusement park outings, beach nights, and a Christmas party. Two of the main events of the year are Summer & Winter Revival. Summer Revival is a massive event where the junior high and high school kids go off to camp for a week. The senior pastor gives nightly sermons that touch every student attending. The teens also enjoy Hunger Game-like daily competitions and making friendships. My son became a Christian at Revival, changing his life. Winter Revival takes place over a long weekend and is a scaled-down version with just junior high students. One more thing The Narrow provides for kids that want to learn more about the Bible and grow more in faith is a program called Train (last year it was called 180). The students in this program read assigned books and scripture passages, memorize verses, and learn how to TAN. The program has been great! Serving I remember hearing when we first started attending CBC "the best way to connect to people in the church" is by volunteering to serve. One of the things my husband and I spoke about after we first attended the church was how joyful everyone was that served. Even after almost two years, this hasn't changed. There are hundreds of committed servants at CBC who really serve joyfully. It's such a pleasure to serve with people who desire to serve and do it with joy. My husband, son, and I all serve in various capacities with the church. I feel more connected, just like being in a smaller church, because of all the people I've met and worked with at CBC. Staff The staff at CBC have been wonderful and helpful. I have worked closely with many of them and I'm so impressed with everyone. They work hard and long hours for a purpose greater than themselves. The pastors work diligently to teach the Word of God accurately. Stephanie, the Women's Ministry Director, works tirelessly overseeing many functions. She is a gift to the church. My review is the same for all the points (parking, service, sermon, children's church, worship) I mentioned in my first review (see below). To achieve my best in soccer or running, I'm going to go to the best coach, and I'm going to look for the best team to play on. If I want to do my best and perform well, I'm going to look for an organization and a leader that will challenge, sharpen, stretch, encourage, and correct me. More than any sport, I want--no, NEED-to be excellent in and striving for the best I've ever been in my relationship with Jesus Christ. Compass Bible Church has the best coaches (pastors) who devote their lives to making disciples for Jesus and investing in our continual growth, and the best teammates (fellow churchgoers) who show up to practice, run the drills, invest in team building, and perform well in game time (in keeping with the metaphor). Compass is full of leadership and a healthy, growing congregation that studies the Word of God, and then learns and is challenged to DO it--to LIVE it out. No place is ever perfect this side of eternity, but there is consistency at Compass--integrity, teachability, LOVE. I now am in a right relationship with God, according to what HE says and on HIS terms, and not my own, largely in part because of the ministry that goes down at Compass. God is not who I THINK He is, but who He SAYS He is. Studying under the right teacher is essential, and at Compass, every one of the pastors is spot on in their grip of the Word, AND they are approachable, interactive, compassionate, and loving. We drive from south San Clemente multiple times a week, and it is WORTH it. This is our family. Best infant, children, student, men, women, and adult ministries around! Did I mention the fact that this church ministers to families in need through a prayer team, a team that writes handwritten notes, a visitation team for those in the hospital or are super sick, a MEALS ministry, where people from the church make you meals and come help you in practical ways if you are sick or in need, even a QUILTING ministry?!
