When I was in kindergarten about a decade ago, this school was small, and I mean SMALL. The magnet program was just starting, so I was lucky to have arrived when I did. I believe that art is the number one thing that should be inputted into a student's curriculum, and Elysian is the perfect place for that. If you're planning to send your kid there, expect them to come home with art projects and wanting to be lead of the school's annual play. Expect attending every event the school has: the harvest festival, multicultural fest (if that still happens), holiday shows, spring shows, arts fest...etc! I'm not surprised that Elysian has become a competitive school recently...it's a really great place!! I still go to the harvest and arts festivals every year, and I'm still close friends with people I've known since kinder. Hear this from a former student: this is a really good little arts magnet.

The teachers and staff are all so kind, genuine, loving and generous. The school offers an incredibly nurturing environment. The academics are also top-notch and the teachers tailor learning to students (for example, if your child is more advanced in a particular subject they will ensure he or she stays challenged with more rigorous assignments). My son has flourished since becoming part of the ICS family. If you are contemplating enrollment I would not hesitate. Between the steadfast commitment to academics and the nurturing environment ICS truly is an exceptional place.

But the international diversity of the students' families is unmatched at other SoCal schools. Yes, many French and Western European family's, as might be expected. But we have families in our class from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, for example. My five year old is already correcting my French (which is admittedly terrible!) and she loves the school and it's the emphasis on language and expression. The teachers are patient and supportive and providing a good balance between structure and flexibility.

That is of course, until it was time to enroll my child in school. Growing up in a beautiful area and attending great schools meant that I wanted nothing less for my child. As I searched for private and charter schools I was very unenthused about the service and curriculum they offered. A part of me wondered if I had made the proper choice by moving to the Los Angeles area. Finally, I looked into public schools but was skeptical. With all the negative publicity, safety concerns, and lack of funding for the public school system I was mortified but attended a small orientation anyway. Upon entering the campus I was guided by smiling staff to a library for the children and then seated. Waiting for the orientation to start I couldn't help but notice how organized and thoughtful the staff was. They offered headsets to Spanish speakers and a translator to answer their questions along with those of the parents of English speaking children. Once started the principle wasted no time in outlining goals, expectations, and benchmarks the school had for children and their parents. I was impressed by the PowerPoint and overall direction the school administrators were trying to take. As I continually drilled the principal with questions and concerns he did not budge. His enthusiasm and commitment assured me I was at the right place and that my princess would be obtaining the education she deserved and I expected. Overall, I'm so blessed to have stumbled on to such a rare gem. The campus and staff easily make this the right choice for parents in the Los Angeles area.

The elementary school (and pre-K) has a great creative vibe with caring teachers and staff. There's also a level of mentorship since the little kids get to see the older kids showcasing art, film, performances, and playing sports. There's outdoor education in Elysian Park where middle school students have elementary buddies which enables learning on both sides. The High School is great - interesting courses, sports, art, film and performance, and college admission rates are stellar. The small student body allows for personalized college admission counseling and planning.

From the time they…read morewere little through having an 8th grader, our kids have thrived, gaining solid academic preparation, well-rounded interests, and a sense of belonging to a warm, welcoming, and active community.   The teachers at St. Brendan are terrific at all levels, starting with the expert Kinder teacher who helped set up one wiggly five-year-old for success and taught another to love reading over Zoom in COVID, all the way through Middle School teachers leading sophisticated discussions of novels and social issues and shepherding kids though high school applications.  When our kids have needed support, the teachers and the Principal, Mrs. Young, have been there and all along, our kids have been seen for who they are, cared for, and championed.  I also love that as a Catholic school, discussions around service and social justice are integrated into daily learning; our family is Catholic but many St. Brendan families aren't and the focus is largely on common values. St. Brendan also offers a wide range of opportunities for kids to learn teamwork and leadership and to expand their horizons, from successful but inclusive sports teams, to a spring musical that levels up every year, to a popular scouts program, and lots more.  The art program at St. Brendan is a standout; all grades have class weekly and the students make some truly remarkable pieces. That said, what really makes St. Brendan unique is the emphasis on togetherness and community.  The older kids look out for the little ones, with each upper grade student assigned a little buddy they spend time with throughout the year, helping our middle schoolers stay playful while learning responsibility.  Every family contributes service hours to the school, meaning parents are highly invested and present every day.  Our collective efforts add to the offerings for the kids and in the process, we've gained wonderful friendships and a sense of belonging.  I can honestly say there is always something fun happening at St. Brendan! As we start to look to the next chapter, we couldn't be happier to have found this amazing school.

Our Experience at This School - A Deep Disappointment…read more We enrolled our son at this private Catholic school with high hopes, trusting in its mission to protect and nurture the children of God. Unfortunately, our experience was deeply disappointing and concerning. This situation happened approximately one year ago, and as parents, we were devastated. It took us a long time to fully process everything that happened--not because we didn't care, but because our top priority was always to protect our son and make sure he was emotionally safe. The pain caused by what happened didn't affect only him--it hurt us deeply as his parents and family. We had to rely on loved ones for emotional support to cope. Now, after time and reflection, we feel able to speak about it because this should never happen again. When our son faced conflict with other students, the school's response was troubling. Instead of fairness and compassion, his teacher reacted with harshness. Her behavior was relentless and cruel toward a 12-year-old child. That conduct was inappropriate and did not reflect Catholic values of safety and respect. As a teacher, her role should have been to guide and support students--not judge or take sides. She clearly took sides, damaging the trust our son had placed in her. He initially felt safe and confident but felt betrayed. She never tried to talk with him about what happened or gave him a chance to explain himself. We were also disturbed when the teacher held a private conversation with our son without informing us. That happened during questionable disciplinary action, which we found unacceptable. We are concerned she held a personal grudge against him--something no school should allow. No child should feel singled out or intimidated by a teacher. It became clear she did not want our son in her class or at the school. She bullied him and damaged his self-worth so deeply we worried for his mental health. He no longer felt safe; he felt scared, anxious, and uncomfortable. He feared constant judgment, which made learning impossible. We also saw a divide between students who started young and those who joined later. New students were not treated equally or supported fully. This extended to extracurriculars--our son was excluded from sports for lacking experience, which left him isolated and discouraged. Eventually, we had to enroll our son in a new school. Transitioning to middle school was hard enough; being pushed out of a school he loved made it even harder. The school should be ashamed of how this was handled. No one stood up for him, and a teacher abused his trust and undermined his success. The school claims to follow Christ's example and hold high moral standards. That should include compassion, protection, and forgiveness. But these values were only words, not reflected in actions. The school failed to protect our son and allowed personal biases to guide decisions. Because of all this, we made the difficult decision to withdraw our son immediately. It was heartbreaking, but we no longer believed he was safe in that environment. We hope the school reflects and makes changes to prevent other children from suffering similarly. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend this school--especially for students entering in later grades.

Yes, there…read moreis a lot of money at this school and some of the parents and students remind everyone of the whole who-has-what mentality but my kiddo who is on financial aid has had no problem finding like minded classmates to bond and form relationships with. I can't speak about drop off or pick up lanes because my kid takes a bus, but i will say they do have sunscreen dispensers by the soccer field and they seemed to have been there through out the school year and into summer. The campus is small and they have multiple security staff located at both gates, which is a big relief with all the violence that has happened on campuses all over the country. Everyone is friendly and professional. The girls on the volleyball team are on campus usually pretty late so we've met a lot of the supporting staff who are also very approachable and genuine. Over all I would recommend this school to friends. She's the youngest of six, so this experience has been a total game changer and I understand the desire for private schools who can provide the support and guidance that Marlborough has. The good news is they offer opportunities for students who may not all have the same means. They have uniform swap day where girls can donate their gently used skirts to be donated to new students and students who just do not feel the need or have the finances to buy new. Over all, we have found a wonderful home here. Our youngest is thriving and we couldn't be more grateful!

The work was challenging and the majority of teachers were creative and stimulating. My daughter had incredible friends, lifelong friends, who were the bridesmaids at her wedding and with whom she is still close now that she has her own family. Our biggest disappointment is that she has two boys and no girls To send to Matlbotough. Oh yes, she was so confident that she started her own business at 21 when she graduated from UCLA.

My daughter loves it-she always wants to stay and play in the school yard after school.
