Since then, he has been under the care of an incredible team at Compassionate Care in Ann Arbor. On the morning of May 2, Chipper wasn't acting like himself. He refused to eat and seemed to be having what I feared was an irregular heartbeat episode. I called the clinic, knowing they were closed, and was advised to take him to the nearest emergency hospital. I was scared and unsure of what to do next. Then something happened that I will never forget. I received a call from Dr. Forbes. She wanted to know what was going on with Chipper. Without hesitation, she chose to put her personal plans aside to come in and care for him. She told me to head to the clinic and check in online. She even said she was in her pajamas but would be there in about ten minutes to meet us. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief. Knowing that Chipper would be seen by Dr. Forbes, someone who truly understands his condition, gave me hope when I needed it most. When we arrived, Dr. Forbes, along with Becky and another nurse, welcomed us with such kindness and compassion. They treated Chipper with so much care and treated me with the same level of empathy and understanding. You could feel how much they genuinely care, not just about the animals, but about the families who love them. Compassionate Care has always been wonderful to us, but this experience went far beyond anything I could have expected. The level of dedication, empathy, and selflessness shown by Dr. Forbes and her team means more to me than I can fully put into words. I truly believe that if it were not for Dr. Forbes and her incredible staff, this could have been a very different outcome. I am beyond grateful for everything you did for Chipper and for me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I…read moretold her I would update the review honestly once some of the hurt around the situation had settled. Since then, however, I came across a TikTok posted by Dr. Forbes discussing my review and referencing details about my animal's care. While no names were used, I was disappointed to see a private and emotional situation discussed publicly after nearly 10 years as a client. Maybe the video came from a place of hurt or frustration on her part as well, and I can appreciate that emotions run high in veterinary medicine. However, after seeing the post, I no longer feel there is a reason to revise my original review at this time. If Dr. Forbes chooses to remove the video and reach out privately, I would be open to reconsidering the review. Original: Dr. Forbes is wonderful and honestly the reason we originally started using Compassionate Care. Dr. Smith is also excellent. Whenever we saw either of them, the care, communication, and compassion were outstanding. That history is why we continued bringing our pets here for years. Unfortunately, over the last few years, the consistency of care and customer service has declined. We began seeing a rotation of newer veterinarians, and while some experiences were positive, others were not. Our last two visits with a newer male vet were especially concerning. During the first visit, I felt he came across as arrogant and lacking bedside manner, but I gave the benefit of the doubt since he was newer to us and unfamiliar with our dog's history. At our most recent visit, we brought our 13-year-old dog in because she was struggling to walk. We were devastated to learn she had a broken leg and cancer in the bone. We understand the prognosis may not be good, and we understand euthanasia may ultimately become the humane decision. However, we wanted the opportunity to bring her home, process the diagnosis, seek a second opinion, and discuss all available options before making such a permanent decision. What upset us most was the way the conversation was handled. When we asked about pain management so we could take her home comfortably, the vet became defensive and dismissive. I will admit emotions were high, and I became frustrated as well, but I also apologized for my tone during the discussion. Despite that, he refused to provide more than a five-day supply of pain medication, repeatedly telling us, "She's a thirteen-year-old dog with cancer and a broken leg -- put her down." We were not asking to let her suffer indefinitely. We were asking for enough support and compassion to responsibly seek another opinion and spend time with our pet while determining the best course forward. I also questioned why concerns about her leg weakness months earlier had not led to additional investigation. While I understand cancer may not have been detectable at that time, the discussion became even more tense after I raised those concerns. At the end of the day, we left feeling judged, dismissed, and unsupported during one of the hardest moments a pet owner can face. We now have a dog at home with a broken leg, only a few days of pain medication, and the added stress of urgently trying to find another veterinarian willing to help us explore our options. It is incredibly disappointing because we truly respected several members of this practice for many years. Sadly, this experience has caused us to lose trust in the clinic and we can no longer recommend it to others.

Such was the case a few weeks ago, when my beloved Autumn developed a severe case of constipation, and couldn't defecate, which was making her severely dehydrated due to persistent vomiting that was caused by her primary condition. At the recommendation of my local veterinarian who was booked solid for the next two weeks, they told me about the "Ann Arbor Animal Hospital" located on the city's west side and highly recommended them. The Ann Arbor Animal Hospital (AAAHP), has been in existence since the early-to-mid 1930s and was the first of its kind to open in the entire region. There's an old saying that when it comes to medicine, experience counts the most and this is especially true at this veterinary facility. The staff at the AAAHP are required to attend 30 hours per year of continuing education, as part of their commitment to excellence to their patients and the community as a whole. This is a key factor in making sure the AAAHP is continually improving their skills, and updating the entire hospital on the latest medical developments and advances in veterinary care. When I called the AAAHP, they asked me a few questions about my cat's condition, and it was decided that I should bring her in to their "Urgent Care" section right away. So I loaded up Autumn into her carrier, and off we went to the hospital. It was here that Dr. Brian Fryburg, took her into the back and they proceeded to give my cat not one, but two enemas to try and help loosen her up. Finally, it was decided to sedate her, and use a manual extraction method to get things moving again, which finally worked. I can't say enough good things about Brian Fryburg, DVM and the staff at AAAHP. Throughout Autumn's stay in urgent care, Doctor Fryburg would come in and provide me with continuing updates on her condition, procedures being undertaken and potential costs involved. He really kept me in the loop, and made sure my senior cat was taken care of properly. For any pet owner, having routine checkup visits to the veterinarian is a must. However, there will come a time when your pet will face a medical emergency and require immediate care to save its life. You can be rest assured that the staff at the AAAHP will provide your cat, dog, or rabbit with the most modern and effective treatments possible to save it's life.
