There was a candle girl... a wooden cutting board guy... overall I found it spare and uninteresting. There were hardly any crafters. Except for a woman selling cards for $3. Each! The best part was watching all the customers' dogs. The worst was the coffee stands' diarrhea-inducing almond milk latte. Avoid at all costs. Also, instead of accosting unsuspecting customers to demand whether it's their first time, and urge them to come back again every Saturday, how about just choosing better vendors from the start?

The apple cider slushies were so refreshing on such a hot day. The hay ride was fun (pro tip: don't wear shorts or your legs will be itchy). We were able to pick a generously sized bag of apples and I am excited to try some recipes with them. Also, if it is a sunny day there is not much shade anywhere, so be prepared for that. The owner of Arrowhead also has a plumbing business and he has done great work at my home, so I wouldn't expect his orchard to be anything less than spectacular too. Last weekend we took a Saturday morning trip to the Hartville Marketplace & Flea Market, and it…read moreturned out to be such a fun outing! When you first pull in, you're greeted by the huge marketplace sign, and right on the corner is the garden center--complete with the famous Bigfoot that everyone seems to stop and pose with. I was surprised to learn that vendors can rent a 10x10 outdoor space for just $22 a day. The catch is you reserve the same day each week for four weeks in advance, since the flea market is only open four days a week. $27.00 under the pavilion but there's a waiting list. Before we started shopping, we stopped at Sarah's Grill for lunch. Their burgers were delicious--fresh tomato, crisp lettuce, sweet onion... definitely worth the stop! Then came my favorite find of the day... strawberries! They were advertised at $5 a flat. When I picked one up, I noticed a few moldy berries underneath. The vendor immediately smiled and offered them to me for $4 a flat instead. Sold! I brought home two flats, which worked out to about 16 quarts of strawberries. Of course, I couldn't leave without grabbing a bag of fresh kettle corn--that's become one of my favorite flea market traditions! Like any flea market, there was a little bit of everything--the good, the bad, and the ugly. Some booths looked freshly stocked, while others looked like they hadn't changed in weeks. But that's part of the adventure. You never know what treasure you'll stumble across. When we got home, I immediately flash-froze most of the strawberries, and the rest became homemade freezer jam. All in all, it was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning--good food, great bargains, and a freezer full of summer to enjoy later. Have you ever been to the Hartville Marketplace? I talked to the owner for a while and she told me how she has worked in a Mexican restaurant in the area for years and was always disappointed that they rarely carry any of these delicious fruit-based snacks that are so popular in Mexico. She was extremely friendly and charismatic and definitely has a passion for this new venture of hers. She offered samples of a few different items off her menu and we decided on an order of bionico. Bionico is a modern Mexican twist on a traditional fruit salad. It gained popularity in the 1990s in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Rosita's version contains fresh cut papaya, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, apples and banana. She offered it with toppings of granola, coconut flakes and pecans. Then it is drizzled with a generous portion of a sweet crema. The bionico was so good! It was so much better and more refreshing than the best ice cream you can get in the area. Another person ordered a Piña Loca which is another refreshing fruit-based treat. She also offers some savory snacks such as the Chicharrones Preparados and Ceviche which would go great as a side with some tacos from Taqueria El Paso next door. Everything about this experience was fantastic. The food was fresh and amazingly delicious. The service and enthusiasm for the product was great. I definitely will visit again and suggest that you make some time to try it out as well!
