I can't say enough good things about this shelter and Joyce one of the volunteers. I filled out an application for adoption online in search for a companion for our 13 year old female cat. Her brother had died of cancer and she misses him. The shelter is very thorough and cares deeply about placing cats and kittens in the right homes. I think that is why some previous comments mention "jumping through hoops." After we were approved to adopt we spoke with Joyce on the phone. Joyce spent the time asking about Audrey and her personality as well as getting to know our family. Joyce stated she has 27 years of experience and made excellent suggestions about what type of cat would be a great fit for our home. I wasn't sure what I was looking for but knew that I wanted a younger cat to be a companion to Audrey. We made an appointment to come meet some cats and Joyce hand-picked several cats and kittens that she thought would be a good fit for our family. She showed us a wide variety of personalities and we settled on a 10 month old kitten. Not only did she hand pick these kitties for us we were invited to participate on a call to educate us on how to bond Audrey and our new kitty. We are so grateful to Joyce and we are so happy we found our new fur baby. Keep in mind when reading other comments that people tend to only write reviews about the negative. Thank you Standish!

Jenny, a very happy cat from Standish!

I was introduced to the Mansfield Animal Shelter back in 2012 when I discovered that they produce a…read moreprogram on the local community cable channel, where they show all the animals available for adoption. A fantastic idea that I wish more shelters took advantage of. After a few weeks of insufferably cute faces and accompanying sad stories, I ventured over. Be sure to check the hours on their website, because they're only open a couple of hours some days, and longer hours others, due to it being staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It turns out that they are affiliated with the town animal control department and many of their rescues have been picked up as strays, or left behind after a move. They also accept dropped off pets, though preferably not the 'basket left on the doorstep' kind, which sadly was part of some of the cats' histories. I found a clean, organized place with cats at one end of the building and dogs at the other. Lots of helpful staff cleaning cages, socializing animals and carrying out the administrative side of the shelter. I was able to walk through the cat room, interacting with the cats in cages (roomy, scratching posts and individual litter-boxes), and with some that are allowed to roam freely while volunteers are there. They also have a couple of communal cat rooms with several cats living happily together. The volunteers answered questions, and I was able to use a visiting room to see a couple of cats 1 on 1. On my second visit I met Jack-O. He was a fixed, 6 year old male tuxedo cat. He was terrified of having gone from owner, to shelter, to quarantine, to the vet and finally to a room full of cats in cages. I could see in his eyes that he had just disconnected and gone to a happy place in his head. He didn't respond to verbal or food-based cues, just stayed curled up with that 'thousand yard stare'. I knew he was the one for me. The adoption process was pretty simple; Application, references checked (previous pets and the vets that cared for them) and a reasonable fee for the process (includes fixing, if necessary). I found everyone that I dealt with pleasant, professional and above all devoted to placing all those animals in good homes. Four years later Merlin (formerly Jack-O) is a happy, healthy, furry, non-rent paying roommate with a passion for chirping at birds and knocking over priceless knick-knacks. He contributes only to my sanity, refusing to deal with ground level threats like ants and spiders. I'm still a sucker for the cable show highlighting their adoptables, and often watch with Merlin directly in front of the television occasionally reaching out to see who these intruders in our living room are.

He was recently diagnosed as a diabetic and he does'nt use a litter box never has used one. He uses either puppy pee pads or an empty dish washer pan place in the bath tub. He is very beautiful and very friendly. He loves attention once he gets to know you. Please contact us with an answer as soon as possible or if you have anyone else who may be able to help. If we can't find a placement for him we will have to euthanize him. I love him and I really don't want to have to do that. I love him bunches but I will have no choice. We asked if we could adopt them and they just seemed bothered by people asking questions. They told us to keep an eye out for when they are available. My mother filled out an application, called her vet and then Scituate called her saying she has no record at the vet . My mother has used the same vet for my whole life and the vet said they never told scituate that. My mom called and tried to straighten it out and so scituate then told her too late, a lady is there picking them up now. We were so confused with no answers. Why would they have someone pick them up the same day but then send us through loops. Just doesn't seem like they are organized.

This is a really wonderful organization stemming from a brilliant idea…read more Fairy Dog Parents is a nonprofit organization that aims to prevent dogs from being surrendered by their otherwise loving families who are experiencing personal and/or financial hardship rendering it difficult to maintain the animal's care. The organization's mission is to help dogs get the food and medical care they need and to keep them at home with the families that love them and whom they love in return. Plain and simple they don't want these dogs to end up in shelters. Through Fairy Dog Parents, a dog owner who is struggling with hardship can apply via the website for assistance. If they meet the criteria and they live in Massachusetts, assistance then comes from people who go on the website themselves and make a donation. On the website you will find compelling stories of dogs who need assistance. You can choose any dog you would like or make a general donation. You can also donate needed items and a list of these things is found on the website. Each year the number of dogs helped has grown as more and more people hear about the wonderful work this organization has set out to do. FDP is hoping to expand its reach outside of Massachusetts in 2014. This is an organization every state could use. As we head into the holiday season when many more people think about making donations, Fairy Dog Parents should be on the list. Another great idea is to tell your loved ones to make a donation in your name as your holiday gift. It feels much better than just getting more stuff. It's hard to go to the website and not want to donate.
