I remember learning the Tuen Ng story - here is where the story gets muddled - a depressed poet suicides by jumping into the river. Villagers threw rice dumpling into the water AND made noise on the water so the fish don't eat him... actually I am sure my story is mixed up, so please consult your local Chinese mythologist. So it is even a surprise to myself that I am now one of them dragon boat paddlers... those we're no longer concerned about drowning poets or man eating fish. I was introduced to this club via a friend who hasn't had much luck with some of the other clubs in the Bay Area. Diesel Fish is, by reputation, one of the most social and welcoming teams in the California Dragon Boat Association. I have only been going for a few months, but am find myself picking paddling up very quickly - as well as having met some awesome people along the way. The Fishies has a team of dedicated, helpful coaching staff as well as teammates of all levels to help you along. An Evite is sent for each training - Tue and Sat, with Thu for advanced paddlers - so there is no such thing as 'not remembering to go'. Dragon boating is a physical work out, and anyone who currently has some sort of fitness regime will have no problem warming up to it. Along with the support from teammates and coaches - I can honestly say I look forward to water time after work on practice days. The paddling takes place at Redwood City - I live and work in SF, and have no problems joining a car pool to practice (teammates come from everywhere). There is always dinner planned after practice... never any pressure to join for dinner, but its always welcoming when you go. So my thoughts? Swing by a Diesel Fish practice and try for yourself:) PS - there's also the occasional 'Boat Race' practice on weekends... but THOSE are purely optional;)

No. (I know how to stand in a pool with a fancy drink) Do you need to be athletic? No. (I'm not!) Do you need to be _____? No. Just be yourself, and come on by. I started on 1/6/2012 (it was a little cold that day) and have been paddling since. I thought I'd give it a try after having seen a race a few months before at Treasure Island. I'm so glad that I tried it out! There have been ups, there have been downs. But I've made a ton of great friends, seen some real athletes, and challenged myself to get better. Dieselfish is first and foremost family. Oh, and I now have a gold medal from an international competition race. Sweet. ;) Come on out and give dragon boating a try!

IVL is so great. As a volleyball player I feel really lucky to have such an accessible, fun,…read moreyear-round league with so many different format and nightly options. It brings a lot of good people together for some very competitive volleyball. With reverse coed, coed, men's, and women's in all different skill levels it really gives one a lot of options. My only complaint is that because the players ref the other players we tend to start later than we should, which results in getting out later and ultimately, less sleep for me. Overall, I love being able to play as often as I want with so many different groups of people. Bay Area volleyball players are really lucky to have it. Especially when you don't want to wait around for the monthly NCVA tournaments.

There are Men's, Women's, Coed, and Reverse Coed leagues accommodating players with a range of skill levels, from those who have just started learning volleyball (coed B), to players who have played on their college team. It's really a lot of fun, great competition, good exercise, and a nice way to meet people. The guy who runs the leagues, Kirk Anderson, has been doing this for over 25 years, and knows how to run leagues! He's also very helpful if you have any questions. There's a free agent list on the IVL website if you are interested in playing but don't have a team. Check it out!
