Was in town to celebrate my friend on getting her master's degree and we decided we wanted some Korean bbq! This was my first time having Korean bbq so I was excited to try. We had no prior reservations and the restaurant wasn't crowded when we arrived, we were seated immediately for a party of four. The sweetest lady took great care of us. She was actually able to remember all of our orders without writing anything down and I found that to be quite impressive. I ordered the Korean corn dog and the takoyaki balls. Both were pretty good! For my entree i personally ordered the beef bulgogi. Which was phenomenal, very delicious! It was fun to cook our own food to our liking and after each protein is cooked you get a fresh plate to cook a new dish. I think this is a great Korean bbq joint. Very very tasty food, Excellent sides, and the service is pretty entertaining too. Please just make sure you get seated in the main room instead of one of the back rooms if it's really hot or really cold out. those other rooms don't seem as well regulated temperature wise but if you sit in the main room and you get one of the waitresses who cares you're gonna have an amazing time. read more

Ah what a little hidden gem. I came out to Savoy for a local premiere for a feature film, You're OUT!, that we shot in the area and my partner and I were so hungry. After getting gas we decided to stop by to Star BBQ and we're so pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, authentic vibes, the quick service, and the fact that the space was full of Korean folks. Always a good sign of a good korean restaurant. We even got our food super fast because they knew we were going to the theater and didn't have much time to eat. Also, they have kim chee pizza. Champaign, IL is the closest city with somewhat decent Asian genre food, and this time I took the family to eat some Korean BBQ. The food was actually not too shabby. Surprisingly, the star of the banchan was the potato salad. I'm not one to crave potato salad, but it was actually quite tasty. Star BBQ is one of the top Korean restaurants in town! Located in Savoy, the restaurant has so much space to offer with grills to cook meat on almost all the tables. I've been there for dinner without bbq and dinner with bbq and both experiences have been great. The servers are extremely friendly, and I have to say that their soy bean stew is probably one of my favorites in town. Highly recommend! read more

I came to Star BBQ for dinner with my boyfriend because we were both craving Korean BBQ. We ordered the sirloin steak and the spicy pork belly. The sirloin steak was good when I ate it as soon as it was done cooking, but after a couple of minutes, it became dry. The spicy pork belly was thin and not very juicy. However, the side dishes and vegetables were fresh and tasty! The pan for the grill was not non-stick and became burnt and unusable very fast. They give you some butter to oil the pan a little bit, but it doesn't do much. I went on a Saturday night at around 8 PM and it seemed like there weren't enough servers working. This place is only good for certain things like jjigae. The bbq is a bit overpriced for what they offer. The banchan is not good at all. They only give you a side of kimchee if you order stews, I've never been to a Korean restaurant when they only give you kimchee with your order. They seem to be a bit stingy with their food. I was told by one of the workers that the black bean noodles are not made Korean style - but to fit western people palates. I appreciated her honestly but disappointed at the same time. My friend and I ordered a Medium Combo 2. Our Server, David told us that the Medium serves 2-3 people and the Large combo serves 4-6. I can assure you we left the restaurant more than full. After we ordered our food arrived to the table in about 10 minutes but the whole cooking experience took about an hour. Star火BBQ is a do-it-yourself restaurant, but our server was more than happy to cook the meat for us. Sometimes when you go to a BBQ place the meat can be too chewy or have too much fat but that was not a problem here. The meat was great. One thing that is not stated on the menu is that the combos include a salad for each person eating at the table, a side of some delicious kimchi, a side or spinach, another dish that I did not know but was great, a bowl of soup and some interesting but great scrambled eggs ( 1 bowl of soup and 1 bowl of eggs per table ). I think this place is new, the place offers traditional Korean BBQ , I would recommend to my friends, firstly it is not an "all you can eat place" the meat is premium here compared to other places. We order a combo M size which is enough for 2-3 people , great thing about this is that they serve superb side dishes including many types of kimchi , mashed sweet potatoes , steamed eggs,vegetables and salads and they do refills! We came here for Christmas dinner. There were 12 of us and they gave us a room with ONE grill. The food came so so slow that we had to cancel some of our orders. I have been going to machita grill but wanted to give this place a try but the food quality was sub par... for the price. To end it all on a good note, we asked to split our check 3 different ways and the server basically brought one check and asked us to split the bill using Venmo. I mean seriously.. I dig this place. Very high quality food and option to cook your own meat, including all you can eat choices. The pork and beef bulgogi were great, but the best part was the sides, which are refilled however many times you prefer. They complement the meat perfectly, particularly the pickled radishes, which you can use as little tacos for the dish. The pork dumplings were stacked, far more filled than your typical dumplings. The ambience was kinda upscale as well, and the service was impeccable. Really friendly staff who took their time to go over the food and talk through all the options. I went in with low expectations and the food was actually really really good! The side dishes all taste fresh, the main dishes were fantastic. I had the seafood noodles, and apparently the noodles are made in store. You can tell. The noodles are phenomenal. The seafood seems fresh too, not the frozen kind. I am not the one to complain about service but I guess today would be the first. I didn't not get to try the food. I heard from a friend it was delicious. I decided to give it a try today. My brother and I, arrived and was waiting to be seated. We were very patient. We waited almost 40 minutes and I'm not sure if the waiter saw us and ignored us or failed to look up and see two people standing there in plain sight. We left because we got tired of waiting. Granted the restaurant was not busy at all. There was only three tables. Any way, I do hope the next time I come, when I do give them a chance again. I also don't care for all you can eat crap since those are crap. This place has the most accurate flavor to soups, banchan, and stews. The food is awesome and the service is even better. Generous portions and the sushi is fresh. I enjoyed dinner this evening with my wife, brother and sister-in-law. My Sister-in-law is Korean and has lived in the U.S. for over thirty years. She thought that the food was probably the best and most authentic of any Korean food she has eaten in the states. Just OK. It's a fairly new restaurant, the decor is sleek but not very functional. The booth chairs are hard and stiff with no cushioning. The BBQ tables are nice but very little leg room or foot room. I wear a size 10 in Women's and sneakers barely fit between the booth chair and table. Can't imagine how a larger person can sit comfortably at one of these tables. On to food- we ordered seafood pancakes and the marinated combo large for the 4 of us. Seafood pancakes are on point but greasy. Bonchon was minimal and disappointing. Most including kimchi tasted like it's from a jar. Meats was ok but we've had better. The beef short ribs is not thinly sliced as described but more like a thin slice of steak- not the typical Kalbi we get on the east coast. Overall, we got enough food even without rice ( we were not offered any) but not satisfactory to our palette. Probably will not go back as there are other options near UIUC. read more

The food was pricey considering it wasn't all that great, at least not up to my expectations or standards for a $18-$50 meal. I had the bul go gi and it wasn't bad I have had way better in the area for much less my son had the bi bin bab and he said he has had better as well. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
