From the friendly and welcoming hosts to the absolutely stunning landscape, this place is totally amazing. The Casita - We were lucky and got an upgrade to Upper Stream. What a gorgeous place. Warm wood floors, a full and well equipped kitchen, a nice gas fireplace, little touches around the place, all really made it feel incredibly cozy and welcoming. We ate out a few times but brought plenty of food to cook breakfast and lunch on site. Our stay lasted four days, so it felt almost like home! The Land - I am an urbanite, so this place was literally nirvana to me. We saw a hawk in action, and heard coyotes. We went on a nice walk, along the dry river bed and up into the hills. I was giddy with the the views and plant life bursting around me. Just be sure to bring a hat! It's bright/warm out there (we were there in early October). I fell in love with the pond! It was an oasis in the dry climate of New Mexico. We spent a lot of time sitting up there, taking in the view. My traveling companion went swimming, too! I can't say enough good things about Cliff River Springs. Those four days will stay with me for many, many moons to come.

I spent an…read moreincredible five weeks (04/01/2021 - 05/06/2021) in "Cliff Mid" casita on the Cliff River Springs property. I will start with the gracious manager, Hope, then the property, and finally the casita. My five week stay was phenomenal because of Hope Atterbury. Hope's kindness and attentiveness pierced through me from our first email correspondence to my last day. She responded to my emails quickly (I have a feature phone without vowifi but got good reception around the upper pond, the plaza, and the parking lot). Hope appropriately checked on my wellbeing without being annoying. During my stay I did not have a vehicle (I still don't lol). Hope generously offered and picked up groceries from me whenever she went into town. Without her kindness, I would have been very hungry, but I still would have enjoyed the scenery and my casita. The Cliff River Springs property is vast, varied, and vibrant. After my arrival, Hope showed me around the beautiful property; more importantly, she showed me the map of the property and the guide to the various trails and hikes on the property. During the first two weeks, I had an amazing time exploring the property and trails. Listening, feeling, smelling, and watching nature be reborn was peaceful and soul satisfying. After the weather warmed and I got some courage, I took several rejuvenating swims in the upper pond. Later on I found a distinguished, tremendous tree to share energy, practice yoga, meditate, and observe life near my casita (the tree is near the longest bench and valley overview area). My casita, "Cliff Mid," was quiet, charming, and cozy. "Cliff Mid" contained everything I needed to feel at home. It had great wifi, a full sink, refrigerator, dishes, salt, olive oil, various tea bags, tea kettle, soap, towels, a gas range and oven, a toaster, dining table, full size bed with a thick comforter, sofa, arm chair, bathroom, electric heat baseboards, yoga mat, books, pots and pans, spices, and hot sauce. My favorite part of the casita are the windows. There is one window in the front and three windows in the back of the casita. I love the refreshing air flow with all the windows open. Also being able to watch the birds, especially the humming birds, from the front window and listen to the stream from the back windows is spectacular. One of the best parts of my adventure at Cliff River Springs were the moments I shared with the other guests and staff. I had different neighbors during my stay. Everyone had positive, calm aura; additionally, everyone was friendly. Whether you come by yourself, with a friend, or with a bunch of family, you will enjoy the harmony and nature at Cliff River Springs. You will leave relaxed and happier (maybe a little sad leaving because you want to stay longer). I plan to return to Cliff River Springs to experience its magic during each season. We live in the area and wanted a small, simple, and special ceremony in this beautiful landscape that we love. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon Casa Escondida's elopement packages through some late night googling. Ernesto helped to plan the perfect celebration for us and our 3 guests. I especially appreciated how open and considerate Ernesto was of us as a queer couple in the planning of the event. He didn't make any assumptions when it came to pronouns, flowers, or the names we would call each other as a married couple. He made sure to ask first which was so thoughtful and made us feel even more at ease and sure of our choice. It really was the most magical day and that is a huge thanks to Ernesto and his staff!

Prior to the sale the owner lived in the house next door and personally managed the inn's daily operations. We stayed in the Juniper room and the first night was quiet, but the second we were kept awake by coyotes howling right outside the window. When we entered our room, we checked and found the following: 1. There were dozens of dead bugs on the bathroom walls and all over the floors, especially next to the nightstands and next to the bed. 2. There was a large mass of black hair in the shower drain. 3. The bathroom faucet was almost completely clogged with minerals so that the water sprayed sideways. 4. The show was also clogged and only three streams of water came out at high velocity, so it was painful to try to use it. 5. The shower mat was wet and dirty, and the tiles and floor were heavily mineralized or perhaps dirty. 6. The bathroom cabinet was dirty and had some sort of residue all over it. 7. There was a 6-inch by 3-inch hole next to the air conditioner that was open to the outside. The right side of the air conditioner was also open to the outside. 8. The outer screen door did not open properly unless I applied upward pressure, and the inside door did not lock completely. 9. The bed was very small, an old-style queen, but the sheets were clean. 10. When we woke up in the morning there were mice droppings all over the floor, which is not only unsanitary but also dangerous as many mice carry hantavirus. After walking around the grounds, we noticed the following: 1. There were three-foot-high weeds all over, and the back of our casita had five-foot-tall weeds and broken glass bottles scattered around. 2. The fields around the inn were all wild and overgown. 3. The mulch in the shrub beds was sinking into the dirt. 4. What appeared to have been manicured plants in the past were now all overgown and unhealthy and surrounded by overgown weeds. 5. There was a 5-foot wide and 4-foot deep hole dug in the back yard with no protection against someone falling in other than a rope, most of which was on the ground. 6. The paved paths, including those adjacent to the main house, were cracked and dirty and were covered by leaves and debris. 7. None of the outdoor chairs had cushions or covers. There was no onsite maintenance or operations manager, and the women who cooked the breakfasts were also working as housekeepers and groundskeepers. They told us that there is nobody else to help them and that the owner rarely shows up in person. The owner attempts to manage by text message but there is no cell service at the inn - how ironic! Thus, there is no way to report problems unless a guest has enabled Wi-Fi calling and messaging. This place is a perfect example of a property that shows the failure of remote management and that lacks adequate staff to operate successfully. The one part-time person makes a huge effort to do what is needed, but one part-time employee simply cannot do everything to handle daily operations. What is needed is a full-time grounds maintenance person, a full or mostly full-time cook, full-time housekeeping, and an on-call or part-time handyman for fixing things like doors, plumbing or electrical. The owner needs to realize his failure at remote management and acknowledge that the tasks needed to properly operate the inn cannot be completely accomplished by only one part-time onsite person who tries to cook, clean, and maintain the grounds. As a result of this management failure, the facilities and grounds have become dilapidated, run down, overgrown with weeds, and verge on non-functional. I do not recommend staying here until there is a complete overhaul of the management approach.

Little did we know that we would be plunging it daily! There were no screens in the windows, so if you wanted fresh air it came complete with bugs! Unfortunately, I dropped a small piece of chicken on the sheet and quickly tried to clean it up, but it left a small stain. While the club originally founded and…read morebuilt the ski area in the 1950s, it transferred management to a resort group in 2014 and sold almost all the land and infrastructure to Mountain Capital Partners in 2018. Despite selling the resort, the Los Alamos Ski Club maintains strong ties to the mountain and club members actively volunteer for trail clearing and forest maintenance. Despite the long and winding trip up the Mountain, Gayle and I enjoyed the scenery as we drove up the parking lot to take a look. It no longer looks like the family-run operation of years past, but it remains formable and maybe worth a special winter trip to check it out again.

First time skiing, total success! I signed up for a lesson, rentals and a full day lift pass…read more Paid $172 for everything. Started at the rentals, they already had my skis and poles out and labelled, went up and got my boots, made a quick exchange for a size up- ski boots are hard to put on! Then rented a locker for our shoes (which when we came back proved to be unnecessary since everyone just leaves their shoes on the ground) Walked over to the lesson area and got placed in a group of beginners based on our zero skill level. They had a few other groups for those with more experience. We went through a ton of drills- one foot in, then the other, then will both. Worked on pizza/French fry positioning, wedge turns and horizontal climbs. Then headed to the magic carpet- would have been nice to be told what to expect when exiting - just stay loose and upright and walk out when off the belt. With 30 mins left of the lesson, I asked if we were going to go up the beginners lift, the instructor was psyched to take the three of us older kids The instructor slowed the lift for getting on and off to make it easier. Then taught us how to use the wedge turns to navigate down the mountain. Had a great time and feeling super accomplished! Couple notes- I bought ski pants/bib thing, went with a few layers on top with a rain jacket over, good gloves and regular sunglasses. Felt very comfortable and warm and happy I didn't spend any more on gear. For the food, you'll be better off bringing your own cooler. You can eat outside food in the lodge and they don't have alcohol, so if you're looking for a midday beer, you should bring some with you. I should have just got the beginner lift tickets, I wasn't ready after one lesson for anything else Overall great day and would totally come back!
