This is an odd review because it isn't about shopping for a guitar but about customer service. Last Saturday, March 21, 2026, I entered Star Guitars in a panic. We were on our way to a house concert and needed help finding the address in Santa Rosa. My phone GPS had quit working soon after leaving home, and I'm not familiar with SR. I came off the highway at Third Street and parked in front of the first small business we saw, which was Star Guitars. I love guitars and guitar music of all kinds and used to play an acoustic instument, so this was beloved territory. I stated our dilemma to the proprietor and asked to use the landline phone...which he helped me with because I was so rattled. When my friends didn't answer, he located the address on the computer and gave me easy, explicit directions on how to get there. He did all of this while there were one or two customers (real customers!) in the shop. I want to express my warm gratitude. We arrived to the concert on time, thanks to him! read more

So recently I'd been having a few problems with my 7 string Baritone (string buzz no matter how much I adjusted my bridge, a slipping low E String etc.) so I decided to check this spot out since it's right down the road from me, and man was I pleasantly surprised. These guys really know what they're doing and knew all the right questions to ask me so that my instrument was exactly where I wanted it to be. Upon receiving my instrument I noticed a night a day difference. I purchased an Epiphone SG from these guys about a month ago while on vacation. We chatted for about an hour. It was a fun experience & I've been playing this guitar nonstop ever since. There's something about this guitar that makes it easier to play than my Fender Fat Strat. The Humbucker pickups & control layout are really cool. Whatever. The guys at Star Guitars were very knowledgeable & polite. In addition, the guitar was in tune & the intonation was close to perfect from the get go. This is frequently not the case & I didn't need to have my tuner with me. When you're pushing seventy, this is exactly the service that you like to have. Tobin I'm guessing manager of store saw my post on craigslist for two MXR pedals, one Super Badass DIstortion 100$ new, and a MXR Reverb 200$ new. I was selling these for 100$ for both. Tobin says come down to Santa Rosa to my shop. I called Tobin before I headed down from Novato to Santa Rosa, keep in mind this is a far drive for me, gas isn't cheap for me, he says "just go to my shop Star Guitar, it's all good" pretty much. I get there and meet Alice, show him the pedals, which were in excellent condition. I even brought a 9 volt adapter which the pedals don't even come with( sold separately), apparently Alice doesn't know how pedals work, and knows more than costumers because he works at a shop. Alice lies to me and told me he had no way of "testing the pedals to make sure they work", but that was a lie, I BROUGHT A 9 VOLT! He could have plugged it it and tried it with an amp and guitar in the shop! To lie to my face and my friends face like that was shocking. Tobin tried to tell me we're all going through hard times, we'll yes we are my dad just died on Thursday and now I get lied to after driving miles for nothing but to have my time wasted by a professional shop. Highly disappointed, these hard times don't give you an excuse to lie, you should watch who you work with because they will drag you down. Tobin and Alice you could have easily avoided this, learn from your mistake but let it be known. read more

Very rude at the door. Was asked if I'd bring an "attitude" into the store. I'm a potential customer, and this dudes on the phone, dickish off the bat. Told me to "f-off". Great customer service skills my guy. Could have bought a guitar, little did he know. But I was not welcomed or greeted nicely whatsoever. Not the ideal way to run a business. Go to any guitar store but "Star Guitars". Very poor business practice. I walked in the Sunday heat today, specifically to check out this store. Out of all the music shops in Sonoma County, my favorite will always be Star Guitars. They have the most friendly and down-to-earth staff I have ever seen in a music shop, no smug fedora-wearing guys judging you from behind the counter. On top of being the only shop in town that deals guitars from factories other than fender and Gibson, they have an excellent selection of used and consigned equipment. The best part is that the place is a complete hole-in-the-wall, nobody knows about it and therefore the prices are slashed. You can walk away with a pristine Gibson SG for $599, or a boss DS-1 for $40. The thing that sets Star Guitars apart from other guitar shops isn't just the guitars they supply. Star Guitars is the only music store I've ever seen that truly connects with the local music community. If you are in a band, they will sell your CD's and T shirts in the store and don't even take a cut...who else do you know who does that? They will also display your flyers In store. And it's not uncommon to run into Tovin, the owner, at local shows in the area. Star Guitars rocks! Even if you aren't looking to buy anything, I would highly recommend you stop by just to look around. read more

I am selling my 1958 Gretsch Country Gentleman Serial # 2741 and brought in to Star Guitars to have owner Tovin Medway take a look at it for a ball park figure. Tovin was unbelievable how much time and interest he spent with me looking over the guitar. He took time for reference comparisons and background info on the instrument. Tovin was incredibly patient with me unhurried with a meticulous inspection. While Mr. Medway was doing his homework for me, I snooped around at his varied selection of guitars and he is extremely fair priced. Took my acoustic there to get setup,I got it back right away. There was a slight issue with some fret buzz when I tried it out so I brought it back and the person there was very nice and was able to correct the problem right there. I really like it here. They don't judge you at all, unlike other music stores I've been into in Santa Rosa. They are friendly and helpful, and they have really reasonable prices. The shop is a little small so don't walk in with a huge backpack. They are just starting up but they know what they are talking about. This place rocks! I went in for the first time the other day and left with an acoustic guitar, a case, a guitar strap, and two guitar wall mounts. The guys there are cool and helpful. The store is small and cozy, but organized and clean. There's also a good vibe in there. I felt like I could pick up any instrument and just start playing without feeling pressure or any hassle. I needed a bass pedal so I went here because I saw one on their website for 50 bucks. Went in, it was there but he wanted 85. I told him it was only 75 new. He told me he can't compete with online and told me 75 was the best he could do. I needed a new pedal that night and this one looked in excellent shape so I allowed myself to pay full price for a used pedal. Bottom line, if you want to do business with a straight shooting honest store then don't go here. If you need something and you're willing to overpay then go ahead. I won't be going back...ever. What did the 25 dollar premium above the advertised price get you? 25 bucks and a bad review. Hope it was worth it. BTW, a handful of reviews on this place and 2 complain of bait and switch. You can bet it's happened a lot more with other people not bothering to report it. As far as not being able to compete with the internet, you absolutely can compete. But, you might not be able to do it on price, you have to do it with service. You failed at both. So your're right, YOU can't compete. read more

THESE DUDES ROCK! So I was first introduced to this shop a little over 2 weeks ago. It was the end of a fairly disappointing, frustrating, and long day shopping all the nearby/neighboring music shops to no avail. see, i was on the hunt for .... the hunt for a beastly man AXE, something that put hair on your chest just holding it in your hands. I had a hard enough time even finding anything name brand let alone anything name brand with GRRRRRRRRR! Well like the brilliant chap I am, I thunk it perty wise to call upon the Google Gods for a little direction and then ""BAM"" there it was, STAR GUITARS. So I called em up and this dude Tobin answered, he's cool dude, anyways I told him what I was looking for and he told me had exactly what I was looking for! I hauled my ass over there, and when I got there I absolutely blown away at the guitars this place stocked. Deans, Washburn, ESP's, Jackson, Ibanez, this list goes on! The Google Gods were very good to me! These guys really know their guitars and this really helped take the torture out of decision making. I was there for maybe 45 minutes tops and I walked ut with 2 new guitars, an amp, foot swith, strap, and chord. THE PRICES HERE ARE AMAZING, I PROMISE NO ONE CAN MATCH THEM. Since that first day I have been back twice Bought another guitar (Beautiful Jackson!) and a digitech Trio band creator and a boss distortion pedal. These guys are just starting out so I would highly encourage anyone who has even the slightest interest in guitars to go and vist these guys, show them a little support and hook yourself up in the meantime! read more
