"Cause I'm free to decide, I'm free to decide" (The Cranberries) You can decide on a few ferry services to get you to and off Mackinac Island, but for us, our decision to travel with the Mackinac Island Ferry Company's ships from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island was a good one. We bought our tickets on the website, and that was super easy to do. Our two fastPASS Round Trip adult tickets were $31 each plus a $2 convenience fee. Our tickets directed us to park at Dock #3 in St. Ignace, and that location is well marked with big signs. Parking is free, and the dock was well staffed with plenty of folks to answer questions and keep the traffic flowing. There are no arrangements available to book a ferry for a specific time, you just go and wait on line for the next one. The ferry company steps up departures during heavy tourist season. It was quite a sight to see the deck hands hustling when our ship arrived from St. Ignace to get us off the island. We must have seen them unload 100 bicycles and scores of luggage carts for those spending some time on the island. Expect your ride to take 15-20 minutes. read more

I've used Star Line as my way to get to and from Mackinac Island every single time over the years and they have all been 5-star experiences! They are wonderful and always on time, and offer different types of boats to suit all your different needs - they even have a pirate boat! I have yet to try that one because the timing never lines up, but hopefully one day I'll get to! We always book in person, so I am unaware if there is a way to book it online beforehand. I also normally go during the peak season for Mackinac Island, but I think because there are so many companies and ferries to and from the island, it'll never be sold out for long. Perhaps you might show up and the next available departure is sold out, but the following one won't be and you can easily get that one and wait a little longer before departing! Once you're on the island, there is no set time to come back with your roundtrip ticket. You just come back whenever you're ready and get in line to do so, and I appreciate that convenience and flexibility! Every once in a while as well, the Star Line ferry will take a different route, once again just depending on which time you book! The most recent time I took the ferry, which was this past summer, we happened to be on a boat that took a little detour UNDER the Mackinac Bridge!!!!!!! That was so exhilarating and not anything I ever imagined doing, but loved it when I got down there and could be the proper TROLL that I am haha! It was a nice bonus treat at no extra charge and really started our journey over to Mackinac Island nicely! Star Line is also so convenient and you can easily bring your dog on board as well, in addition to bikes and strollers. They have good, organized systems built into place for all of your needs around this and that doesn't go unnoticed by me either. Highly inefficient. They need to stop selling tickets if you don't have space on the boats. No directions at the docks, everyone was confused as there were two lines with nobody directing traffic. They had one boat running on the busiest time of the year. Go with Sheplers instead they run multiple boats and the lines move quickly. read more

We really enjoyed our experience with Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry from start to finish. The online reservation pages were very informative and intuitive to use, so we felt very comfortable with the 'how-to' of our ferry experience. We did end up printing off our tickets, but most people chose mobile options. Whatever works best for you! All of the staff were very friendly, professional, and efficient. We left exactly on time and there was clear communication from start to finish. They were also helpful whenever we had questions. The ride itself was also very pleasant. We barely made our to-island ferry, so we had to sit below deck. However, the views were still beautiful ! We enjoyed the stop by the Mackinac Bridge on the way to the island, along with some historical information. That was a nice extra touch for us tourists! On the way back, we had priority pass (costs extra), so we were able to be first in line and have our choice of seats. We sat on the rooftop toward the front and it was an absolutely gorgeous experience. Breathtaking views all around and fun in the sun! It is fast and windy on the top deck, so be sure to select your deck of choice accordingly if you prefer to be away from the elements. We also appreciated the affordable prices and that Star Line offers an alternative to Shepler's (the mega ferry line that is not as friendly). Our only negatives were two: 1. If you choose the St. Ignace ferry, make sure you are aware that there is a $4 toll in and out of the UP via the Mackinac Bridge. Be sure to budget this extra $8 as you consider between the Mackinaw City and St Ignace locations. 2. While all three docks in St Ignace do have on-site parking, Dock 3 has very limited parking. And there are no posted alternatives. We almost missed our ferry because after we tried parking in the Dock 3 lot and it was full, we tried parking at Shepler's since there were no alternatives offered. The manager dude at Shepler's was extremely rude, telling us that it wasn't his job to offer us ideas for other parking but that it was he job to not let us park there. We will never ferry through Shepler's after this experience. Luckily we found street parking near the public loading dock, ran, and made it on time. All this to say, be sure to arrive plenty early so that you can either find a spot in the limited Dock 3 parking OR park at Dock 1 and take the shuttle over to Dock 3 (it is too far to try and walk, unless you have a lot of time. Overall a VERY good experience. If we return to Mackinac Island we will definitely ferry through Star Line. As should you! read more

Ok, so here we are on July 6, the Star line Ferry boat to Mackinac island is only running one boat and it's over an hour late so the line to board is an hour and a half long. Their competitor "Shepler"is running boats (seems like) every 15 minutes and their customers are all smiling. the star line has a deal to haul all the staff to the island so the workers get prime boarding and 1st off privileges. After nearly 2 hours standing in line to get back to shore, I have lost my normal good nature. If Star Lines had made any attempt to let us customers know that their second boat had broken down and-or communicated is any way, I would not have been so upset. On the upside: Yes, we finally made the crossing without sinking or running aground, the company was good and it didn't rain. read more

This ferry is good to use from mackinac city to mackinac island. In mackinac city you park for free at the pub/restaurant across the street from the dock. Do not use this ferry for St.ignace to mackinac island. Star line uses a smaller boat from st.ignace to mackinac island. This boat is older and it isn't fun to ride on the lower deck. My wife and I did both round trip ferry rides from mackinac city to mackinac island on Labor Day and St. Ignace to mackinac island the Tuesday of Labor Day week. You park behind the driftwood restaurant/hotel in st.ignace which is across the street from dock#3. read more

Recently apparently bought by a private equity firm and it shows. Has gone from an excellent service to trash. Family traveled back yesterday and we traveled back from island today. On ride over, boat significantly delayed. Yesterday family rushed to get on boat but because somehow all the regular boats were non operational, had to ride the pirate boat and luggage did not arrive for hours. Today, we called to confirm schedule ok, otherwise we would find an alternate mode of return. They said all back to "normal", but here we are waiting hours for our baggage to arrive on Mackinac city after we too took the pirate boat over. We even sent the baggage ahead of us from the hotel to avoid this issue first thing in the morning. I guess it's fine if you have no plans or travel requirements, but I'm pretty sure not everyone can wait all day for their luggage. read more

I had booked 3 tickets online for the classic pass round trip. I did this based on their brochure that are can be found at any tourist stop around northern Michigan. When I arrived at their St. Ignace dock I was told that they don't offer the classic pass from St. Ignace and they I would need to the Mackinac city dock. That would require paying a toll to cross the bridge + paying to park in Mackinac City. I explained that no where in the brochure does it say that the classic pass is only from Mackinac City. Their defense was that it says it on the website. I check on the website and it does say it in the fine print, but it is not obvious. Long story short, they were not not going to own up to their mistake and I had to pay to upgrade our tickets to avoid the time and expense of going to Mackinac City. On the way back I the evening they took us to dock 1 and told us to get off. They failed to say that if were at dock 3 that we should stay on. We ended up walking the two miles to dock 3 and then another mile to get to our car. There where several parties that were there with us and all were understandable upset. There was not even a shuttle waiting to take us to vehicles or the other dock. I will never use Mackinac Ferry again and I would recommend that others use Shepler's Ferry instead. read more

We are out of state and looked online but didn't book until we arrived as we were unsure what time we would arrive. $50 difference to buy your tickets online vs in person at Star Line. While I was using the restroom My husband though he would be helpful and purchased tickets. Not 30 seconds later after he purchased them I asked how much they were. We paid $178 for ferry tickets and the woman at the counter said the discounted deal is online only. We don't give refunds. What crooks! Then adjust the price! Go to the people next door. Terrible experience. 10:50 boat (dock 1) skipped by the dock 'because it was full of dock 3 passengers so no room"...however, no communication to 70 people waiting on dock. Same crap again for 11:30 boat (skipped this pickup again)! No ommunication from company until multiple customer complained. The answer from Company: "the dock master from first dock forgot to call" AND "the employees at this dock are new". Had to wait for 12:05 boat. We understand hic-ups occur in business but the poor attitude and lack of concern from Star employees was most discouraging. Terrible lack of training, & communication! Star line doesn't honor its published schedules. Twice this year I've arrived for a ferry at the scheduled time only to be told that the website is wrong. Today not only is the 7pm ferry not running as promised by Starline's website but the passengers loaded onto the 7:30 boat were told that the 7:30 ferry was also cancelled due to weather, and we watched the Sheplers Ferry leave at 7:30 on time. Clearly, Starline is engaging in bait-and-switch in order to minimize the number of boats it has to run. Good thing I'm not trying to catch a flight or get anywhere on time. It costs a ~$75 for two people take the ferry, with bikes, to the island on Star Line. If you go to the first pier, then you board an empty boat. If you attempt to board at the second pier, then you fill the remaining seats before the boat heads off to the island. The first pier has a nice gift shop, restrooms, and two cashiers to purchase tickets. I believe the second pier has a hut you can stand outside in the sun/parking lot and wait to purchase your tickets, then wait to board as boats have seats that first come from pier 1. Perhaps it's cheaper to go from the second pier, but I am really glad we happened upon the first pier. Park for free in overnight parking and ride your bike to the boarding area. It's a quarter mile, if that. Otherwise it's $5 or $10 to park in the main lot. Buy your tickets and secure your bike band to your bike frame, somewhere that it cannot slip off. Drop your bike at the head of the line and get in line to board. This made us very nervous, as our bikes are our babies, but they were handled nicely, and debarked with us on the island. Once on the boat, you have the option to sit on deck or in the sheltered area underneath. It's about a 15-20 minute ride to the island, after the second pier and that wind is serious if you are sitting on deck. Hold on to your stuff/hats/sunglasses. The boats are quite frequent until 10pm off the island. Around dinner time, the families are crushing the return pier to get back to the mainland, so if you can wait, belly up a bar somewhere and wait out the line. The ferry sent a big boat about 7pm, that loaded a lot of people so our wait was only about 15 minutes. I did ask the someone how I can use the promo for the casino credit on the back of the ticket, if they collect the tickets and I was told that it's an old promo, for which it is also a rip-off. Sooo buy your tickets online to save money. If you're traveling w kids look for the family package and save $$$. We had no problem buying our tickets or using the "will call" service. The ferry ride over and back where great too. The problem came when we arrived at dock 3 on our return. 3/4 of the passengers on the ferry thought we were going to dock 1. No one ever announced what dock the ferry was going to. No one asked. No one said anything. A simple announcement would've remedied everything. There was a free shuttle to the correct dock, but we had to wait for a second one because the first filled up with equally confused passengers. Waited in line for two boats to come and go from St. Ignace before we could get on board. Had to wait 1.5 hours for a boat because they run so infrequently. No shade or seating in the waiting area. And even though the boat leaves late, you get stuck on a 35 minute ride to the island because they detour under the bridge. Use Sheplers instead--twice as many boats coming and going in the same period. And their boats are bigger so they can handle more people! read more

The teenager manning the parking lot wasn't the most helpful, but Helaina running the front desk realized we had paid for parking online we didn't need given our departure point from St Ignace. Showed up at 11:10 for the 11:30 ferry, others had been waiting since 10:30, didn't get on until after noon. A worker said only one boat was running. We saw 4 ferries leave Shepler's before we left. Ferry's were spaced an hour apart during high season. There were no benches in the line for waiting. If you wanted to sit you had to leave your spot. Arrived at 8:27 for the 8:30 ferry and the ferry watched us walking down the boardwalk at 8:29 and shut the gate anyways. Had to wait an hour in the sun for the next ferry. Waited until the 9:30 ferry which did not even BOARD until 9:28 and leave until 9:40. So much for departing on the minute like they did the hour prior. If they plan to keep every thing on the schedule to the second, it should be done for everyone. Not sporadically throughout the day. Unhelpful and slow staff, seeing that we were rushing did nothing to aid us. Poor poor service. Extremely disappointed. Will definitely be taking Shepler's next time. read more

Ferry quit running coming from Mackinaw City to island leaving us dead in the water. Found out they ran out of gas. How does that happen? Ferry full of people leaving the island had to tow us to the dock. Then upon leaving the island two days later the ferry left 5 minutes early leaving family members having to wait for next boat. This here is why you use Shepplers. These people are a motley crew of misfits. One crew member left to go get herself and the captain Ice cream. So we left the dock. Backed up went back to dock. Rammed the dock for a few idiots that were not here on time. Apparently they were allegedly owners. They were in and out of the pilot house. Several parents were concerned enough to speak with the crew. What a joke of an operation! Seriously a Mickey Mouse operation. They didn't call this a hydro-jet for no reason. It is super fast compared to the other ferries that bring you to the island. Gives a great discount online. If you're planning on going under the bridge, be sure to check their schedule as they only have selected times that they will underneath the bridge. It's pretty cool to see the back of the ferry. The water flares up pretty high and you could see a pretty rainbow. read more

(Raining and windy the morning we departed - with that in mind - one of the crew came around asking if anyone was interested in seeing the bridge. Every passenger answered no except for one sooo - they obliged her. It was a bouncy ride and because of the rain ....it was not a pleasant ride yet.... they obliged the one and only passenger that answered yes. That's pretty good customer service in my book - & since the one and only looked like she was getting closer to finishing up her bucket list - everyone smiled and endured) 1 suggestion - perhaps instruct passengers with pets to sit in a specific area...? If I could give less than one star I would. We bought tickets for the 10:15 ferry, stood in line with our two kids (22 months and 5 months old). 10:15 came and went, then 10:30. I went inside to ask about the departure. I was informed the 10:15 was not running today and the next one would be at 10:40. Kind of annoyed no one said anything to all of us in line, but I figured it was only a ten min longer wait, not worth getting worked up over. 10:40 came and went, then 10:50. Boat filled up QUICK (we were first 1/3 of line), and they stopped loading right at us. We couldn't believe it. I asked when the next boat would come, and was told they were only running the one boat, and we had to wait for it to go and come back from the island, with a new departure of NOON. Needless to say, I was VERY upset. There we were, two kids under 2. Trying to do a day trip to the island, ZERO communication from the staff as to their restrictions that day. It was unbelievable. They just clearly wanted to sell tickets and get people committed to standing in line. I went inside to ask for a refund, we could not and would not wait another hour to get on the boat. I was told, very rudely, that they're are no refunds and that the schedule is "subject to change." No apologies, no acknowledgment of the inconvenience, nothing. Finally I just left. It wasn't worth arguing with complete incompetence. We walked across the parking lot and were boarded and loaded on to a Shepler Ferry within 30 minutes. The comparison was unbelievable. The staff was friendly, helpful, informative, and the boat ACTUALLY ran on time. It was night and day difference. DO NOT use this ferry service. There is zero reason to, and the $2 savings isn't worth ruining your whole day to the island. Shepler was hands down the better choice, even if we lost $60 on the Star Line tickets that wouldn't be refunded. read more

We have been utilizing the ferry while vacationing in st Ignace / Mackinac Island for the past week . During this trip we have taken , or attempted to take the Star Line Ferry . On every occasion (3 round trips ) they have been late , had a broken boat (their own words ) or given us no reason as we were waiting in line for the scheduled departure time . Late , dirty boat , unfriendly crew . All for the price of 27.99 per person round trip . This is a sham . They should be ashamed of themselves . Very poorly run . We had a wonderful time on Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry! I took my 3 & 4 year old daughters there on 7/5/15 and they are still talking about the experience! We were able to purchase tickets the day of online (the girls were free because of their age) and that saved me a couple of dollars. We were able to find the dock easily and were directed where to park, which was right near the building and free. The woman at the counter inside was very sweet and she have the girls each their own picture card. I also noticed the facility was clean and had some gift shops. On the way there we decided to sit upstairs (don't know if this is the right term). The staff directed me where I could put my stroller and we went up. The staff was interactive with my girls. During the ride over I felt safe with my girls. We took the last ferry of the night, the La Salle, back to St. Ignace, again, everyone was very friendly. We decided to sit downstairs where it would be warmer. The deckhand (I cannot remember her name) was incredible. She was explaining to my girls what she was doing outside on the deck, and we both were telling them how things had to be done to be safe. When we got back to shore my girls gave her a big hug, very sweet! I highly recommend Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry and will be using them for future trips when we are up there to vacation. read more

Giving a one star rating simply because the boat didn't sink our way from points A to B to A. If you need to choose between Star Line and Sheppler's; choose Sheppler's. It's worth whatever they're charging. We took the Star Line Ferry to Mackinac Island as a family with 2 dogs. The ferry on the way there was uneventful and pleasant. We were supposed to board the ferry on the way back during one of the evening time slots. We began lining up on the dock with numerous other families - some with small children in strollers. We watched as the Sheppler's ferries came in and out and in and out of the port, wondering where the Star Line's ferry was. After awhile a kid (I call him that because he was probably around 25) came riding his bike out onto the dock, chugging a bottle of Dr. Pepper in hand in a Star Line's Polo, yelling at all of the passengers lined up on the dock that the ferry wasn't coming. Everyone in line seemed very perplexed, as we were very confused by the informality of the fact that we were just informed our ride wouldn't be there. As this Star Line employee probably sensed, we were a little taken back, and so he responded by saying - "you should have checked our terms! We don't commit to having a ferry hear at any scheduled time - we updated the schedule!". He then rode off the dock. As we gathered around we began discussing how disrespectful and rude this individual was, after informing us that we'd have to wait another full hour (it would be past 9PM at that point) past the scheduled pick up time, we saw him coming back around. He clearly heard some of the comments and became very defensive and aggressive, explaining that if we wanted to complain we should feel free to call Star Lines and complain about him. He said this in such a way that we understood any complaints would not be taken seriously or considered and we were basically f*cked. I was honestly appalled. Clearly Sheppler's and Star Line have a sort of oligopoly over the ferrying business to Mackinac, but I'm still shocked by the level of disrespect by the Star Lines employee. Honestly, if he'd just explained kindly that one of their ferry's had broken down, I don't think anyone would have been as upset. But that wasn't the case - so not only were we left waiting on the dock, but we were addressed in such a way where we were made to feel like Star Lines didn't care whether or not we got back or at what time. All the while multiple Sheppler's ferries were coming and going and coming and going - right on time. I would NEVER take Star Lines again, not only because their management and scheduling is AWFUL, but also because their employees will treat you like you're full of shit. read more

First let me state that this review is NOT a reflection of the St. ignace run, only Mack city/island dock/boats. In fact, I as a commuter I decided to just park in St. Ignace and pay the 4 dollars every day and drive over the bridge back to Mac city where I needed to go anyway as the island dock and Mack city dock are absolute chaos and inexcusable. I actually have ridden sheplers this past 15 years as I'm a resident but for whatever reason their parking was an issue so I had to switch to Star Line. First let me state that they are NEVER on time!! Ever! So if you work on the island you're gonna be late. Peak season is supposed to be every half hour at the top and bottom of the hour as their schedule claims. Nope. Sometimes it's 10 -15 min after and then maybe at 45. So you can come visit from far away and plan on making that top or bottom of the hour boat and most likely will be out of luck. The staff have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING!! It's so completely unsafe the way they "tie the boat up" that at any moment a wave could easily unleash it from the dock. In fact one time it did. I was waiting to board as they were about to disembark the boat that had just arrived and the girl couldn't tie it up right and so the guy just let the ramp down and started pushing the luggage cart off as it was starting to slip away from the dock. Smh. I've seen seniors getting off on the EXTREMELY steep ramp in Mack city and dock workers start to help them then let go and the one guy started to take a header and was saved by a passenger who stopped it. If you are trying to leave on the 8:00am boat on Sunday there's literally no dock workers there so you better know what you're doing and where your luggage should go. And my final complaint is they let the passengers dictate when and where they stand and get off. WHAT!!!!!????? On sheplers it's actually run like an actual ship. On time and coordinated. Here ppl are literally everywhere and when you disembark they just push past the luggage carts and get off first!!! Sigh.... I've called several times about this and never received a call back. The ferry worked great for us. Every ferry we took left right on time and as scheduled. There were a lot of times going back and forth, so it was easy to plan our days out. By far the rudest staff I have ever seen in my life. My husband had forgotten his glasses and was trying to read their info on schedules and fair prices. The rude man behind the counter started talking to him in a condescending manner. I told him rather than belittle us maybe he could offer some help???? He continued to belittle but louder this time so the few other people in the shop could hear. We were so embarrassed, We couldn't leave your business fast enough. A short drive down the street found a class A ferry service in Shepplers. So professional and polite. We will tell others of our experience with star line. read more
