The ferry to Mackinac Island g Staff are friendly and you're able to bring your own bike to the island. Great experience

This is the advertisement of what you "could" be riding on.

The old bait and switch!! That we were getting on the hydro jet and was going to be there in 20ish mins. Nope 45mins later and sea sick because the boat is so slow. Never again!! Spend a few dollars more and go some where else. The boat doesn't even go fast enough to have a breeze. Never again!!!

    Stupid boat

Low capacity cramped boats, boats don't come often, and take forever. Just go with Sheplers, it's better.

All I wanted was a simple ticket to Mackinaw Island. But what I got was inattentive staff, no sense parking instructions, broken directions, and the staff member said I had to buy a round-trip ticket and when I said no, she replied "How you gonna get back to the mainland?" I said from one of your competitors. She said then "I won't sell you a ticket at all unless it's a round-trip ticket." And the picture shows how safe they are. Ship is under command from a non USCG- licensed individual while the captain thinks his social media profile is way more important than the safety of the passengers.

Nice ferry, we took the 9am ferry which goes under the bridge. It's excellent views. Loves it. But they doesn't seem care too much about social distancing! When people wait in line, there is no social distancing requirement, on the boat, the seating has no social distancing requirement too!

tl/dr: Don't assume the posted schedule will be accurate, bring something to do while you wait, leaving before 9:00 might be a good idea if you can arrange it. We took the ferry to Mackinac Island yesterday. It was a beautiful day. We caught a shuttle from where we're staying and arrived just in time to be in line when the 9:45 boat loaded, but we were too far back to get on. Hadn't expected to make that one, so wasn't bothered by it. And the schedule had the next one going at 10:15. No worries. Unfortunately, the boat that arrived and unloaded at 10:15 didn't return to Mackinac Island. We watched it pull away empty and dock at their little harbor a few yards away. Not sure why it needed attention, or what attention was needed. No communication from Star Line reps. And by this time the line was at least twice as long as when we arrived. We must have been the front of the mid morning wave. Well, the schedule says the next boat is at 10:30. But no boat came until 10:45. Got on, found a great seat on the middle level on the port side rail, and enjoyed the journey to Mackinac. Returning was different. It was a little after 3:00. No line, boat arrives, boarded, returned. I suspect sometime in the evening, though, it would have been more like the morning outbound wait. We're on vacation, so time isn't nearly as critical as normal. Communication always helps in the service industry, and Star Line could make some improvements. But they basically did what we paid them to do, safely. That counts.

The boat was on time and got you from the island to the city speedily. What else would you want?

The 7:30 ferry was an hour late. The staff were nice. The ferry's are pet friendly but we kept getting held up with lost luggage.

The premium parking costs more but it's near the dock. So you choose! We chose the regular parking, but we almost missed getting on the ferry because it took a while to get to the parking and back. Ferries leave every hour, usually, so we would have had to wait an hour. So, four stars because of the parking situation. It's kind of a bummer, but they got you by the cojones because where else are you going to park if you want to catch the ferry to Mackinac Island? The rest of the ferry experience was great. The people expertly tag and handle luggage, and the ride is smooth. You can sit on the deck and take in the view, but keep in mind that it's very windy and can get cold, even during the summer months. Or you can sit below deck where it's climate controlled. You can still get a great view below deck. The trip from the mainland to Mackinac Island (and vice versa) takes about 17 minutes, and they depart right on time. Don't be late, or you'll have to catch the next ferry.

They are family owned & operated for over 76 years, and offer the fastest ferries to Mackinac Island. A ride was 16-minutes each way. We purchased our tickets from their website & they were scanned from our phone going in each direction. We sat upstairs, outdoors. There was seating outdoors. Our ferry was half full, there was a lot of extra seat. The highlight of our boat ride was going under the Mackinac Bridge.

I've been using Shepler's Ferry since I first started going to Mackinac Island annually jn 2018…read more Sheplers in St Ignace is the BEST!! I would rather spend $8 to cross the bridge twice than deal with the absolute chaos Mackinaw City can be. This ferry dock has always been carefree and less stressful. I really appreciate the large parking lot that can be used for day trips and overnight trips. Parking for the day is currently $15 for the 2025 season. However, I will take that convenience of getting in my vehicle seconds after leaving the ferry docks. The restrooms here are always spotless and I really appreciate the waiting area in case the weather is bad. I love the new enhanced boarding option with Sheplers ($12 extra per ticket to board early -- makes it easy with my two dogs) My only issue is there really needs to be better signage in the tent and extra employees. We recently had the enhanced boarding ticket and found the designated line, only to have an employee accuse of cutting the line due to her not paying attention and talking to a group of other employees. Made us feel humiliated in front of so many people. I look forward to coming back to Sheplers next year!

"Cause I'm free to decide, I'm free to decide"…read more(The Cranberries) You can decide on a few ferry services to get you to and off Mackinac Island, but for us, our decision to travel with the Mackinac Island Ferry Company's ships from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island was a good one. We bought our tickets on the website, and that was super easy to do. Our two fastPASS Round Trip adult tickets were $31 each plus a $2 convenience fee. Our tickets directed us to park at Dock #3 in St. Ignace, and that location is well marked with big signs. Parking is free, and the dock was well staffed with plenty of folks to answer questions and keep the traffic flowing. There are no arrangements available to book a ferry for a specific time, you just go and wait on line for the next one. The ferry company steps up departures during heavy tourist season. It was quite a sight to see the deck hands hustling when our ship arrived from St. Ignace to get us off the island. We must have seen them unload 100 bicycles and scores of luggage carts for those spending some time on the island. Expect your ride to take 15-20 minutes.

They are wonderful and always on time, and offer different types of boats to suit all your different needs - they even have a pirate boat! I have yet to try that one because the timing never lines up, but hopefully one day I'll get to! We always book in person, so I am unaware if there is a way to book it online beforehand. I also normally go during the peak season for Mackinac Island, but I think because there are so many companies and ferries to and from the island, it'll never be sold out for long. Perhaps you might show up and the next available departure is sold out, but the following one won't be and you can easily get that one and wait a little longer before departing! Once you're on the island, there is no set time to come back with your roundtrip ticket. You just come back whenever you're ready and get in line to do so, and I appreciate that convenience and flexibility! Every once in a while as well, the Star Line ferry will take a different route, once again just depending on which time you book! The most recent time I took the ferry, which was this past summer, we happened to be on a boat that took a little detour UNDER the Mackinac Bridge!!!!!!! That was so exhilarating and not anything I ever imagined doing, but loved it when I got down there and could be the proper TROLL that I am haha! It was a nice bonus treat at no extra charge and really started our journey over to Mackinac Island nicely! Star Line is also so convenient and you can easily bring your dog on board as well, in addition to bikes and strollers. They have good, organized systems built into place for all of your needs around this and that doesn't go unnoticed by me either. It's much appreciated and always a good time aboard Star Line ferries!
