Read carefully!! Joke of a letter written by a 'medical facility'
    Karen R.

I wish I had seen the reviews on this place before agreeing to go to this organization for my fathers cancer treatment. Wish I. Could give negative stars. The staff here have no empathy for families or the patient. They are unorganized, understaffed and do not communicate properly or thoroughly. Appointment confirmation calls are made multiple times for the same appointment; different people call each time; sometime with different times. They make you pay upfront for treatment and do not offer payment plans, claiming it's their company policy that an upfront fee is due before they can even get you on the schedule for treatment. So if you don't have $$ you are SOL and dead before getting treatment. They schedule treatment and don't order chemo meds on time leading to rescheduled and delayed treatment. One time treatment meds went to the wrong office. When we asked for a simple letter to justify grab bar installation in my parents apartment the office manager was hesitant to write anything because they could be held liable for that alterations in the apartment. What?! Why would that be any of her concern...she's not the lease holder! She was concerned about THEIR liability in the event we move out..."who would repair the holes in the wall from the grab bars?" She asked! As if that was any of her business!! What she should have been concerned about is their liability when my dad has another fall. While she finally agreed to write the letter; the written letter was a joke. My 1st grader could have written a better letter. Start date of service was wrong (in the future in fact!), DOB was wrong, grammar, spelling and punctuation terrible. Photo of the letter for reference attached. I should have switched organizations months ago... but I was hesitant to restart the whole process. I am in healthcare myself and have the opportunity to refer, recommend business such as these to client and network professionals. I would NEVER refer the Onc Institute to anyone! I can admit my emotional state is on high these days managing a parent with stage 4 cancer, a young family and a full time (stressful) job. I may have (who am I kidding I did) lose my shit on the phone with these people- not my finest of moments. And for that...sorry not sorry!

Since this was during the covid pandemic, I was allowed to go in only for the initial consultation and for her first infusion. They have a great covid protocol in place, so we never felt nervous about her visits. During the initial consult, Dr. Reese spent a long time with us, explaining in detail about the cancer and about what to expect during the treatments. He drew pictures and wrote key words on some sheets of paper we were able to take home and study. We felt he really cared about her outcome. They have a web portal for communication that allowed us to submit questions and usually had Dr. Reese or a staff member get back to us that same day. They were also great at working through insurance issues with us. We never felt overlooked or ignored, and my wife said all of the front office staff and nurses were kind and helpful. Unlike restaurant reviews where you end it by saying "I can't wait to come back!", well, I'll say we do feel comfortable continuing to see Dr. Reese for follow-ups, and should a similar need arise in the future, UCLA Health And Dr. Reese will likely be the first place we ask for!

Dr. Charu is the Director of the Pacific Cancer Medical Center. She has limited time in seeing patients specially new ones. There are other doctors available. Unless you have a specific referral from your PCP to see her then you would be seen by the other doctors. The nurse practitioners are there for follow-up visits. You would be surprised how helpful and knowledgeable they are. Dr. Charu is a very caring and compassionate oncologist. She has saved my life. She looks at the patient as a whole person instead of just the immediate symptoms and current diagnosis. By ordering a very specific test based on my new symptoms, she diagnosed me with Lupus which my rheumatologist at the time should have done. Dr. Charu is an oncologist and hematologist. In addition to prostate cancer, I have been seeing her for a blood disorder for close to 20 years. I highly recommend Dr. Charu, a great physician.
