We stayed in a cabin 2 queens, had a microwave and mini fridge so basically hotel room style for sure not camping maybe glamping. It was beautiful the cabin was duplex couldn't hear our neighbors who actually were very pleasant and gave us some good tips, they stayed in both side and seem to visit a lot. My husband wished we had more than 1 night maybe next time for sure would consider going back. read more

Funny history of the State game Lodge is that it's burned down and was rebuilt and when it was rebuilt it was rebuilt by inmates for $1 per day. The landscape design of the game log was from a landscape designer from Minnesota. My family's been staying here for as long as I can remember starting out with my grandparents staying in the lodge and I was little kid. We always meet here as a large family with all my aunts and uncles once a year and it's always fun. It's a historic Lodge with lots of rooms good places to eat and a yearly summer artist in residence that you can talk to about all the arts that they're producing on site and watching the new painting. read more

We reserved an expensive room at the State Game Lodge due to its historic background, using the Custer State park website. We arrived and were informed the park system had changed the reservation to the nearby Creekside Lodge without informing us. No explanation at the front desks except that "this happens sometimes". No reduction in price, no other non-Custer state park hotels within 15 miles. Needless to say we were not happy with this business practice and the lack of honest communication by the state park system. read more

This review is for the restaurant only. The lodge is a perfect spot to stop for lunch or dinner. We dined during Covid, inside. Servers wore masks but guests were not required to wear them. We felt very comfortable eating here. Tables were spaced out and everything was very clean. Our waitress was excellent. Our drinks were never empty and she was so kind sharing her favorite trails in the park with us. Food was better than I expected for a restaurant in a state park. Portions were a good size for the prices. If you're looking to catch some glimpses of the bison they like to hang out in the area around the hotel. read more

This place is in need of an extreme update. The wall socket would not work or hold the plug cause of being old and worn out. The humidity level in the room was really swampy and gross. The carpet is in need of replacing but how about being shampooed. Also I know the outlets didn't work but also there are only 3 in the room. The wi-fi ONLY works in the lounge and lobby.we ate breakfast at the restaurant and the buffet is mediocre at best. We ordered it because they said it takes at 30 minutes for orders?? So they are pushing the average buffet. I will say the location is the best and the reason why I would stay again read more

Went to see lodge . The restaurant was very nice and staff was great. Only had the buffet open so only tried food on buffet. I would say it was okay! Buffalo steak was very tough. Not many choices on buffet for the price. The old fashion was good. No desert was on buffet and for $32.00 the value was not there! read more

We stayed in a beautiful two bedroom two bath cabin with a little kitchen. Talk about glamping! This was the absolute best accommodation on our state/national park tour. The location is awesome by the wildlife loop. We had this our home base in the black hills for 4 nights and I would not hesitate recommending this place to friends. read more

We stayed here 4 night at the end of September 2023 to go to the Annual Governor's Buffalo Roundup. This lodge is the closest lodging to the North Roundup Viewing Area. They have a small little bar that seats 6 as well as a few tables. Our bartender, Kira, took very good care of us each late afternoon. Dawn, who work the desk, was so pleasant and always greeted us with a smile in the morning. We would highly recommend staying here. read more

This was our second stay at the State Game Lodge and by far the worst. The staff was more interested in their phones than waiting on us. We had to share our room with numerous bugs along with a bathroom that didn't look like it had been cleaned in some time. Dinner there was not a pleasant experience either as my husband had requested the main dining room when making reservations for our anniversary but when he asked if we could change tables the waitress wanted to argue with him about doing so and they were out of many items on the menu due to end of the season being weeks away. Then after dinner while getting ready to settle down for the night we heard people screaming at each other fighting. Needless to say, we won't be staying here on our next visit. It was a true disappointment because our first experience there was wonderful. read more

We were just eating at the restaurant where the table next to us had a sign that it couldn't be used to allow for social distancing. However, when we were eating the hostess just moved the sign off the table and sat a group there about two feet from me. So upsetting. The only reason my review isn't one star is because the food was very good. I am very upset they don't take our safety seriously. read more

Excellent food and service. Enjoyed the lunchtime buffet, then came back a day later for dinner. We shared the Elk osso bucco, and the Bison tenderloin...both prepared to perfection. Enjoyed the house cabernet sauvignon with them. Our reservation was for 5pm on a Saturday night. We had no wait and our food came quickly. At the Custer Game Lodge yesterday, 7/17/2022, we were in the restaurant before any others and after we waited 55 minutes for our food and contacted our waitress. She said it would be another 15-20 minutes as there were 4 others in front of us and couldn't change the order timing due to their process. We asked for a manager and he said our order had not been turned in until 20 minutes earlier. We left without eating. Regency, which runs concessions in Custer State Park, included an alcoholic drink suggestion with Every menu item to maximize profitability. This included a pairing with my Club Sandwich. Stay away from the lodge. My historical room #39 at the State Game Lodge smelled like a wet musty Buffalo's arse! The shower wall grout was full of mold & looked like it NEVER had been bleached. Even when aired out the foul sewer gas oder returned to permiate the room. The a/c unit was moldy. The bed was hard as a rock & the room looked like a cheap Deep South Motel. Loved the Custer area and Buffalo tour, just disappointed in the lodge. Especially for the price... Definitely take the Needle Highway drive in the morning and at sunset, fantastic views! Will consider one of the small stand alone lodges next time. read more

Had a fabulous meal here tonight. We live here and eat at many places in the Black Hills and by far this was fabulous and blew us away. For a resort they really surprised us and we will definitely be coming back this summer for great meals. I had the Crab stuffed Walleye and my husband and the strip steak, both fabulous. Excellent service and not crowded even though it's tourist season. What a treasure going to be sure we keep this chef. read more

The buffalo tenderloin at the game lodge restaurant may be the best steak I've ever had. First one was in the fall of 2019. It was so good we came back a year later to have another. I was a little concerned my expectations might have been too high but they were more than met. We're now planning another return for this fall. If it wasn't for the fact that the woman at the bar, gift shop, and the front desk I would give it less stars. To start off when we got there we paid over $200 for a room that was smaller than any room I've ever stayed in. The sink for some reason was in with the bed at the foot of the bed. There was mold in the corner of the bathroom between the toilet and shower. And the shower was so small that it was difficult to even move in there. The television had lines in it and was jumpy. We went to the restaurant and had breakfast which we were charged $13 a piece for a military bagged breakfast equivalent. The fruit tasted moldy and sour. It had no flavor to most of the food for breakfast. Simone grabbed a cup to get some juice and the cup literally exploded in his hand and glass went all over the buffet bar. They never removed any of the trays from the bar after the glass went everywhere. I couldn't finish my breakfast since it was so flavorless and all. Now we gave them the benefit of the doubt and make the mistake of going back to the restaurant after a long day of sightseeing for dinner. I went to make a reservation while they were slow around 5 and sat there waiting for anyone to come to the counter to take my reservation and after a short 15 minute wait I finally got to make the reservation. We made our reservation for 8 pm and showed up about 5 minutes prior and didn't get seated until 20 minutes after our reserved time (normally if they're busy I don't care but they were dead). We were then sat down at one of the tables and my fiancé and I decided to sit right next to us and the server came by and poured our water. My fiancé seen something other than ice floating in the water that went to the bottom of the glass and politely asked for a new glass. The waitress brought it back and another server came by and insisted that my fiancé moved to the opposite side of the table and started practically throwing the napkin and silverware all over the table touching the part of the silverware that touches her food. I'm not sure if it was red marker or what it was but there was either blood or marker on his finger as he was touching everything. Shortly after the waitress returned with what I hope was a new glass and a shorter man with what looked like a bowl cut and a chin strap and asked if there was a problem with the water. My fiancé politely said no and stated she seen something in the glass and just wanted a new glass. The guy then started fighting with her insisting it was ice and refused to believe there was anything in the cup. I've never seen ice sink like that in my life. When I said to the guy look she seen something in her glass and just wanted a new one that's all she was sarcastic and rude and started saying repeatedly ice yeah it was ice. I inspected it it was ice. We left and went into town and got food elsewhere. I seen the same guy several times after the incident and not once did he apologize for his rudeness and I would have understood if they were short staffed and overworked. Everyone has a bad day here and there but that was completely uncalled for and I will more than likely never return. read more
