Our kitchen had a slow leak that resulted in mold as well as damage. None of it would have been covered by insurance. At first we were presented with a potential total tear down and a huge bill (a referral from a less than ethical plumber who I suspected would get a kickback). Instead we contacted State Restoration. First they sent out the Thousand Oaks ServePro folks to get rid of the mold. Then Doug Kimbell quickly evaluated the damage and needed repairs at a very reasonable cost and timeline. He then set his State Restoration team to work. The repairs were fast, top notch, we have our kitchen back! Thank goodness for State Restoration. I don't normally do reviews but felt I had to for this company. I was surprised to see some bad reviews that were based on lack of responsiveness. That was not at all my experience. State Restoration did some work for me in my master bath and kitchen. Everyone I dealt with were nice and professional and responded timely. And when there was a problem, in my case the bathroom tile arrived and the color was way off (a defective die lot apparently), they immediately intervened with the tile company and got it replaced. When my tile guy (not one of theirs) measured wrong and was 2 sheets short on what he needed, I had the extra tile within days. Darlene and Doug and everyone that works for them are extremely knowledgeable and will save me from future spend and headaches because they don't cuttingcorners as other contractors I have worked with in the past have. read more

They are a flake. A big waste of time. After going back and forth many times, they went unresponsive.

State restoration is a complete scam and if you value your sanity at all stay as far away from this company as you can. We were referred to State Restoration by our insurance company and have had nothing but problem after problem and delay after delay. We were told by our project manager (Fernando) that it would take 6-8 weeks to repair 2 small bathrooms that were damaged from a leaky pipe. We were then given a contract that had a timeline of 12 weeks. We contacted the project manager who said the contract was a mistake and assured us that it would only take 6 to 8 weeks, but that we had to sign the contract immediately because workers were already scheduled to come out. It took phone calls on a daily basis and several calls to the owner to get them to finish over 16 weeks later, more than double the original timeline. Also, I think it's important to note that we were unable to live at home for for over 2 months during all of this. This company does nothing but hire subcontractors to do the work. These subcontractors all have regular jobs so they have to " squeeze you in" when they have time. The subcontractors and project manager are constantly rescheduling and make it very clear that your job is not a priority. Our house sat empty for weeks while waiting for subcontractors to finish other projects before working on ours. This company also does as little work as possible, cutting corners at every turn, and then still expects you to pay the full contract price. We had a contract from our insurance company outlining every line item that needed to be done as well as the associated price. Several items on this list were not completed out of sheer laziness, and with no discussion with us prior. We then received a bill for all of these items that were not completed, as well as for materials that we supplied ourselves. Not to mention the fact that items in our home were damaged in the process, but nothing was done do fix this, and we were even told to pay for some of it ourselves. Even though the project is now done we still have damage that we will need to repair ourselves. This is the most unprofessional company I have ever dealt with. They take on too many projects, do around 2-4 hours of work per week, drag projects on for months that should take a few weeks at most to finish, and the work is mediocre at best and highly dependent on whoever they choose to hire at the time. I could go on and on about all of the headaches this company has caused, but instead I will just say, do yourself a favor and go with literally anyone but State Restoration. read more

This review is long overdue. We had water damage in our home due to a joining wall leak back in Sept 2013. After posting pics of the disaster on Facebook, a friend highly recommended State Restoration. She had such a great experience with them and they are local.. Since I have done 2 prior renovations in a previous homes, I understand the nightmares people report. with construction crew issues (right hand not talking to the left) scheduling conflicts and unseen expenses. However,by using State Restoration, there is ONE contact person for the entire job.. and it goes much more smooth!! In my situation, water damage from the neighboring wall, my SR contact person handled it all. It was a breeze !! Seriously !! Jon Hill was my guy. He worked directly with my insurance company, the Serv Pro people ((water damage)) and all trades from dry wall, paint, pluming electrician, to hardwood floor installation. Everything!! He even helped me to pick out new cabinets, tile, and had a POD dropped off so our furniture didn't have to go in the garage for 2 weeks with the dust of all the construction. All those details that no one knows until after it happens. SR helped us to live easier without a kitchen for a month. Overall it was a pretty good experience. Our neighbors next door where not as fortunate. They had multiple contractors, and issues and headaches..and much more $$. If I only would have know before, I would have insisted they use State Restoration as well. So, to YOU out there that may have suffered from water damage or looking to renovate a kitchen.. Our personal experience with State Restoration began professionally, but went awry very quickly. Referred by our insurance company for a water leak we tried to work out a contract, but State Restoration kept changing the specifics. We were informed that even after signing a contract, if the prices changed they would have to modify the contract. Okay. But then they added an upfront $1900.00 design fee that would go toward the estimate if we used them. I tried to contact Darlene Kimbell to find out what exactly the design fee was for as I did not need a designer. I was told by the receptionist, Kelly, that Darlene was home with her daughter. Called back to ask Kelly what the design fee was for and she told me that Darlene was there and to tell me that she didn't want our business. I asked to speak to Darlene directly and Kelly actually hung up on me. Rude, disrespectful and very unprofessional. Our insurance company has since dropped them as a referral. read more

We live in Ohio and have a couple of rental properties in California. When one of our tenants burned down our house, State Farm Insurance recommended State Restoration. Because we are out of state, our insurance adjuster said he'd seen their work, they work well with State Farm and he thought we would very happy with the quality of work. It was super easy choosing things like cabinets and finishes over the internet. They listened to my design preferences and offered opinions when they thought it was warranted because I couldn't be there to see it all in person. The process was easy, we had similar design styles so I was able to trust their recommendations. The house turned out beautiful (I did finally get to see it in person). On Nov 16,2017, I called State Restoration Inc when my rental house in Camarillo had a hot water slab leak. The tenets turned off the hot water valve and notified me. I live out of state, so I found State Restoration thru Yelp and mostly the reviews were good. I contacted them and they sent Serv Pro out to remediate the water damage. They did an outstanding job. The tenets are older, 70's and have health issues. The wife has a heart problem. They needed hot water. The insurance company was very prompt in authorizing the plumbing repair. On Nov. 27 2017, the plumbers showed up at the residence and looked over the home. They told the tenets they would be back that afternoon. They never came back. The next day, I received an email from the owner of the business, Darlene Kimball, who said that the work wasn't done because the tenets had not prepared the property. No one had ever told me or the tenets what needed to be done for the work to proceed. I called Darlene and asked her what 'prepared' meant. She couldn't answer. I never did get an answer to that from Darlene. A project manager, Greg Johnson was appointed afterwards and he seemed professional. Thing went much smoother without having to deal with Darlene. Mr. Johnson arrived with the plumbers several days later and told the tenets why the work hadn't been done earlier. The plumbers had wanted a bed moved but they never said anything to the tenets. These elderly people had to go several more days without hot water because of this. The plumbing job took three hours. I had signed a contract for State Restoration Inc. to complete the repairs to the property. On Dec 19, I advised Greg Johnson that insurance had authorized the work based on State Restoration Inc's estimate and to begin work as soon as possible. I never heard another word from Greg Johnson or State Restoration Inc until Jan 4, 2018 when I received a email saying that for 'business Reasons' they could not complete the work. State Restoration Inc is the most unprofessional company I've ever had the misfortune to hire. Darlene Kimball is rude and it seems like she is doing you a favor doing the work and getting paid. The wife at the home has suffered two heart attacks, Dec 23 and Jan 3 and is currently in the hospital. The prognosis is not good. I can't say having their home torn up waiting for State Restoration Inc. to finally repair the residence was the cause of the heart attacks but I can say it sure didn't help. I have completed, signed and sent a formal complaint to the State of California Contractors license Board on State Restorations Inc. adandonment of the job where a signed contract existed . UPDATE: The lady passed away on April 9, 2018. Due to the delays caused by State Restoration, she only got to enjoy her repaired home for ONE day before she was hospitalized for the last time. read more

They came out on time and were very thorough in reviewing the claims adjusters proposal. They also helped me with getting additional funds from the insurance company during their initial estimate. Darlene and team were amazing to us. We fell victim of a condo building fire in Malibu, and our unit was damaged due to water damage. Darlene met with us, understood our concerns and worked with us on how we would rebuild with her help. Darlene Kimbell and her crew are the worst contractors I have ever dealt with. They left shotty, poor quality work, broken appliances, forgot to finish painting leaving primer only on the moldings throughout the house, left holes in the ceilings and the toilets, cracks in every molding no caulking, my 80 yr old mother had to live with a broken fridge that kept freezing over she had to crack a glacier of ice formed in the freezer pan break it up, sweep into a dustpan and put in sink every week for 2 years!!! She was 80 years old with back problems and health issues!! She had to live with a faucet that barely spit out water, a stove top that was not properly installed so she had to use a match to use the range, the range fan broke, they installed the outlets upside down, half the outlets didn't work, left 2 inch carpet gaps with exposed tacks on the floor!!! Cracks in the marble etc etc it was a total mess. They also charged State Farm ins over 120k for the job which should have only cost max 40k considering they did a kitchen and paint only. Darlene Kimbell and Don McMaster used cheap laminated cherry wood in the kitchen and have us a choice of only 3 different cabinets or granite. She said we could only pick from the 3 choices she had unbelievable if we weren't dealing w such a catastrophic event like a FIRE, I should've looked for a better contractor. I also had to deal with these people for over 2.5 yrs trying to resolve these issues as they constantly made excuses and lies like that it was my mothers fault that the freezer froze over. Two years later their own appliance contractor finally confirmed that the fridge had been recalled and the heating unit was not properly installed in the first place absolutely no fault of my mothers. Absolutely horrible people unethical, dishonest con artists they should have their license revoked!! I will do everything to cancel their State Farm contract! Darlene also left us 2 yrs later with an unfinished paint job totally messing up our move in. They left the job half done again and refused to finish the job- typical. She has caused so much distress to my mother and myself. This situation was a heartache for my mother who died recently. Darlene and State Restorations painter told us he is constantly fixing and repairing her poor work quality so obviously she is doing this to other customers. State Farm should not recommend such shady restoration companies that swindle insurance companies, raising our rates, overcharging them and causing such a nightmare to people who have experienced fire and water damage and devastating loss. No wonder she and Don drive 750il bmws!! They are getting richer off poor victims of fire and loss. Good luck staying in business Darlene your reputation will soon get around!! Doug Kimball was first on the site to talk to me about the process. Could not have been better. Next, met with Darlene. She is incredible in her knowledge of design and construction. Next, met with Jon Hill. Again, professional, a wide range of experience and knowledge in construction and really just a nice guy. Job proceeded just as they told me it would. All done in timely manner when they said it would. All trades were professional and nice guys. There was never a mess left on the job site. Jon does an incredible job with them. After a fire, SRI came to pack, clean, and store in their facility in Westlake Village my belonging. When I went to pick them up, I had to pay in full before I could inspect them. When we opened the boxes items were damage and/or missing. The most valuable item, an antic Venice mirror had the frame damaged. One book case that was part of a set (on top of a matching desk) had a broken corner and had to be dispose of. Only 3 of my expensive crystal grasses were returned to me. We took pictures. When I asked My Kimbell, who was in charge of the release of my property, why they chose to store in a volt the items that were supposed to be eliminated but they did not properly protect the items that were supposed to be well care for, he didn't have an answer. I told him then that I was expecting SRI to pay for the damages. I sent an email; I wrote a letter (certified with returned signature) I included pictures and a bill with the invoice of the antic Venice mirror that I had restored. They never replied. I call and spoke with Mr. Kimbell suggesting that ignoring my complain would only push me to find alternative solution such as Small claim court. He said he was going to get back to me. So far nobody did. This company is not reliable and lacks in customer services. read more
