Apparently, Toolbank started out in Georgia at a local resident's house that lended out tools to people who needed them. Eventually, others found out about this resource, and it became community known. Home Depot and another company that is headquartered in Georgia offered to partner with this tool bank, and I suppose that was how the organization became at large and continuing to grow. In Baltimore, they lend tools and equipment to other places like the National Aquarium so you can see that they provide as a vital resource to the community. I think it's great that we have some thing like this in the area! Their Hammers and Ales was a great event and there were many valuable items being sold for the auctions, including a Cal Ripken signed baseball bat, Ravens football game tickets, and baskets full of hardware tools.

I recently saw that they were offering a 1 hour online workshop with a guest speaker/ coach. The topic was about rest not being a luxury. With everything going on today, it was timely and on point. The coach dropped some gems during the first half, we were then able to ask questions via chat. After that, we started painting our signs with live follow the leader step by step instructions. The sign came in a nicely prepared box wrapped in lovely paper and was pre-stained. Also included were pots of paints of your chosen colors, a stencil transfer, paint brush, wooden flowers, small sponges for dabbing the paint on, and two recipes (face mask and a cocktail). The class was well moderated. The owner was streaming live from her home workshop with a really cool backdrop. This was well put together!!! My end product was amazing! The jewelry center offers classes, workshops and studio space to both new and established designers. As you walked into the center's gallery, you could admire the creative work of some of the jewelers. The work was intricate and lovely. They were having a class when we were there, so we only peeked into that room. They do offer space for anyone who wants to create beautiful jewelry. It was an interesting stop on Doors Open Baltimore.

I can't believe it but I've taken four classes here, three weekend workshops and then a longer…read moremulti-week intensive. I had heard about this place on WYPR and thought it might be interesting. The most I'd ever done regarding jewelry is stringing beads - really creatively, mind you! But what they're teaching here is well beyond that and geared to getting you to a much more professional level of craft. I had never worked at such a mini scale. When I signed up for the first class, a weekend workshop with a guest teacher from out of town, I thought it was a bit pricey. But the amount I learned, and the new challenges I faced and overcame with the help of the teacher, was really amazing. The second weekend workshop was more theory and discussion than hands-on, so I wasn't as jazzed, and in reality, I didn't learn as much. The third class I took was the 12-week Intro to Metals and Jewelry with teacher Jenn Parnell. It also was amazing! She is patient, organized, and thorough! The three projects were challenging but engaging. I watched all the students, including myself, become frustrated (during the soldering phase) but then make the leap into the ease of having somewhat-mastered a new skill. My fourth class was a weekend workshop on stone setting with Erica Bello. We learned four setting techniques and I was surprised that we were able to get to each one - and produce samples of each technique. It was very cool! The studio is professionally equipped, well maintained, and safe. The environment is mostly adult - though a couple times when I went in outside of class time, there were students who were behaving like high schoolers... Luckily, the space is large enough that you can just move to a bench further away. The two studio managers, April and Erica, are helpful and professional. Instructors are both well informed and inspiring. A couple things I think they should do are have a quick orientation of the space and point out what is where, explain studio rules, and perhaps have all these things on handouts. My first class, I was the only newbie, and everyone else had their own tools and was very familiar with the BJC - I felt VERY much like an outsider with an unfair disadvantage. Another thing, it would be great if we students could work with unlimited time for the very last class day - a win-win for all. Students get their projects (closer to) finished and the BJC gets happy students. A great resource for Baltimore - more people should be taking advantage of this local gem!
