Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was a Russian novelist and short story writer from the Ukraine area. Can't say I've heard of him or his works, which reflects on me more than him. The sculpture depicts Gogol as he was in a daguerreotype image taken in 1845. He is laid to rest in Moscow.
Why Rome? For more than a decade, Gogol lived in Italy where he developed an adoration for the city. He studied art and read Italian literature, developing a passion for opera.
The sculpture is located in the northern end of the giant Villa Borghese gardens, close to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea adjacent to the parking lot. If you're at all in to Russian literature, stop by and pay your respects.
