Tucked in the alley behind Pangea, Stave has a cool atmosphere. Unfortunately, the first thing you notice is that it is LOUD. For some reason they have the music blaring and it makes conversation very challenging. My phone clocked it at 90 db! Luckily the volume for the dueling pianos was reasonable. Dueling pianos, great idea! And the guys play well. I wish there was more banter and audience interaction/participation. Seems like that's supposed to be the point of the thing. Absolutely love this place! Vibe is chill and relaxing with great decor. Menu changes regularly to keep it fresh and updated. We ordered the spicy fried chicken appetizer and raw beef tartar. Bartender and staff are chatty, friendly, and very out going. Full bar is available and have a wide variety of beer and wine. Stairs leading down to the restaurant might be tough for some folks and parking can be tricky. I love that it's 21 an over, no kids or babies ruining the upscale atmosphere. read more

The entrance to the bar is in the alleyway and to the right. When you walk downstairs you'll enter a place with a cool speakeasy feel that's really intimate. They have daily specials such as $4 wine glasses on Wednesdays from 4pm-7pm and $5 flights on Fridays. They also have happy hour on weekdays which includes 1/2 off wines, wells, brews, and bites. They serve mostly classic cocktails here and only a couple of signature cocktails. My first drink was the painkiller tiki ($11) which had big pineapple flavors and contained many of the typical tiki flavors you'd expect. My second drink was the gold rush ($10) which is one of my favorite classics and was balanced as usual. I also saw that they have a piano in the back so I imagine they have some live music playing although there was no one playing when I was there. read more

A really great restaurant to stumble upon. My partner and I were in Missoula for the day and with all the food around it could be overwhelming to find and decide on something. I am so glad we decided on this place. Entrance is in the alley. When you walk in it's very dark and you are immediately greeted with stairs, so allow your eyes to adjust before walking down. We shared the Prime Rib French and The Flatbread with Truffle, Mushrooms and Asparagus. The food was delicious and would recommend to anyone who loves a speakeasy vibe. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. I went there tonight for dinner and drinks. I ordered a margarita with Don Julio tequila and they charged me $84 for the margarita. I have been to many high end restaurants, in addition to working in Las Vegas, and I have NEVER been charged this much. My husband order a tequila on the rocks and we were charged $74, when the bottle of tequila is $79. I am not quite sure where this place gets off charging these astronomical prices. Great craft cocktails and an excellent selection of high end spirits if you just want to drink something straight. The menu is limited but everything they serve is excellent. I would not expect to get great fried chicken in this kind of establishment but their fried chicken is as good as any I've ever had the nacho tray is massive and tasty. The service is always friendly and efficient - no long waits ever. I also love the ambiance - stashed off the beaten path but near it. It has a quiet, dark, old-world feel to it. Fun dark place. The drinks are on the sweet side, typical for a college town. The music is at a level that is deafening, so don't expect to have a conversation with your table mates. Stay away from the hamburger, dry and tasteless. Instead go for the shrimp po boy, that is very tasty. Trivia is super fun on Wednesday nights. read more

Visiting a friend in Missoula and she took me to this speakeasy in the middle of downtown. We went at about 8pm on a Thursday night and there were a good amount of people there, but plenty of space near the band (it was jazz night). Our waitress was attentive and kind. I had the Elderflower Spritz, which was sophisticatedly divine. The citrus was perfect. However, my friend had the fried tomato sliders and she was not satisfied with them. We heard good reviews about the food, but these sliders were mostly bread with a very thin slice of tomato and no real flavor. The sliders were the only disappointment. I would caution anyone thinking about going to this event. I had a party of four attend Stave and Hoop last month. I ordered a $50 DOUBLE Don Julio 1942 Margarita and was playing trivia with my party. It took over 30 minutes to get my drink and even longer for the food. Once I finished the first drink, I ordered a second, which took another 15 minutes and was nothing but simple syrup and lemon juice. It was also served in a pint glass and no salt. I took it back to the bar, and the bartender was strictly unprofessional, and I asked for a refund. He called me a jerk. So I went up to speak to the manager, and the Wine Sommelier Kyle Riggs met me, and I tried to explain the situation. A bit of a back story I used to be a bartender for a high-end gentlemen club in Cleveland, Ohio after I got out of the military before going to school. It got me out of homelessness; I will take what I can get. Anyway, Mr. Riggs informed me that "if you were truly in the business you would know if a customer states they waited 30 minutes it means they waited for 5." Two rounds of trivia and four people (who all work in the medical field) could attest that I waited 30 minutes and even the waitress apologized. I tried to explain to him how I was treated by the bar manager downstairs, and he continued to dismiss it, stating, "I am overreacting, and he would never do that." I tried to reason with Mr. Riggs until we got downstairs, and he then started to verbally accost me. The bar manager made me my new beverage, but Mr. Riggs would not leave it at that and continued, "would you like me to fire him." At that point, I was just annoyed, and "I said yes." So my table had around a $500 tab going, and I sat down to drink my drink. Mr. Riggs proceeded to continue to yell at me and said I was kicked out. He then walked over to the bar, and I looked back at him, confused. He then rushed over, grabbed my drink, and said I was free to leave. My party and I were completely perplexed, and we just sat there dazed, am I mistaken in assuming that the customer was right? The drink was horrible, and even the unprofessional bar manager admitted that. If you attend this event, I would be extremely cautious of what one says during the dinner and wine pairing. All Kyle and the bar manager had to do was have the bar manager apologize for how he responded to me, make me a new drink, and take it off our bill; then, we would not have complained. However, if one is called a jerk by the staff, then there should be consequences, especially when the drink costs $50 (even know Mr. Riggs also challenged me on the price). How did I know how much it cost? Well, because I always get it when I come. Remember three people and myself were witness to this and we are all medical professionals. read more

Man... this place is dark. I think I need some sort of super vision to read the menu here, I just guessed and pointed to a drink hoping it was good. It was. Very cavernous type vibe in here with the brick/rock walls and exposed wooden ceiling/floor above. The kitchen was closed so we couldn't try any food, but the drinks were decent and came out fairly quick. I'd be curious to check out some music here, we went on a Saturday night and no one was playing... which was odd and disappointing. Went to this place last night to try to have a drink with some friends. When we got there the door man said that they were at capacity. So we waited outside until some people came out. Our group was a party of 8, we saw at least 12 people leave. At this point we thought we would be let in. Simple math. Not so much he would not let us down for an unknown reason. My wife then confronted him and asked why we could not go down. He then said rudely that they were at capacity. She questioned him and then decided to try to go down herself and see. At this point he grabbed my wife and began pushing her. This is where I had to grab him and tell him to keep his hands off my wife. We cannot understand why this door man was so rude. My guess is a power trip. We left and we will not be trying this place again. We also will be encouraging all of our friends and family not to go to this establishment. Rude employees. read more

The drinks are a little pricier, but this is also not a dive bar, so I dont have a problem paying for the experience. I look forward to going back again and again. I was so excited to try this place and was extremely disappointed. The server was yawing as she served us. Not once did she smile or even "pretend" to be welcoming. I've been in the service industry in Missoula for over 10 years and seriously only one guy smiled and gave good service (props to the guy with the apron at the bar, big guy with a beard). The rest of the crew looked like they had root canals 10 minutes earlier. Is it really that hard to smile, and at least "act" like you care about your customers. Shame on you! I have kids their age that work in the industry and they don't act this way. I'll be back because we all have bad days. "Smile, have good eye contact, ask " how are you?" My guy and I tried this place lastnight for date night. We were very pleased. Great place all the way around. It has a "speak easy" feel. Simple menu which is brilliant. Food was fantastic! We had the onion rings, he had the burger and i had the shrimp n grits. So tasty! I highly recommend this unique new establishment. And, try the Hemmingway Daiquiri- its phenomenal! Our experience was incredibly uncomfortable. When we entered, an elderly man was clearly over served and could barely talk. As the bartenders tried to make him pay and leave, they were very abrasive and rude towards him causing him to become aggressive back towards them. The bartender cussed at him and the altercation further developed. After the man paid, he tried to leave on his own, and immediately fell over, hit head and knocked over a chair. My friend and I helped him get up, then the bartenders asked him to leave very abruptly though clearly this elderly man could not walk on his own after being served too much and was too drunk. One worker forcibly "helped" him up the stairs to the alleyway and immediately left him, then came back down and talked very bad about him. When my friend and I left, immediately we saw paramedics and firefighters outside the establishment and we saw a pool of blood because the man could not walk & fell hit his head on a metal pole. It was very upsetting to see how the staff treated someone they clearly over-served and then they just removed him from the property just to not be "liable".
