Terrible customer service. While waiting for our food another customer came in and had a butter burger with a huge chunk of butter still on burger. Not melted. Guy brought in for refund and had to argue with staff for 10 minutes before they agreed to make him another burger. No refund no apology. He had no other recourse except to get another burger unless he wanted to come in another time to speak with manager as staff can't give refunds. I went to drive-through and pay with my debit card, on my end The purchase was completed, but on her end it was still Pending I told her repeatedly to cancel the order and I will pay in cash instead manager came to the window very rude. He cancelled my order he told me I will have to go back through the drive-through to place another order even though I was the only one in drive-through wasn't NO ONE behind ME. My dad was feeling nostalgic and wanted to come here and eat lunch while looking out at the river. I hadn't realized that they had done away with waiters/waitresses. When you first walk in, there are a few kiosks where you place your order and pay. After that, you can help yourself to the drink counter and then pick your seat. They call out your name when your items are ready and you go up and collect it from the counter. I'm kinda torn between whether I like this approach or not. I hate the nervous interactions with people but at the same time, I'd rather that someone actually have a paying job than to hand off their duties to machines. I did noticed an elderly couple that came in after us struggling with the kiosk. At some point while waiting for our food, I also heard the manager and one of the grill cooks fighting over something. Not very professional to argue loud enough for the customers to hear and be made uncomfortable. The food itself was fine. The shakes seem a bit smaller than I remember, but are still just as expensive. I ordered a Frisco Burger. I would have liked to add grilled onions to it, but that wasn't an option that I could find on the kiosk. May they don't want to offer up custom orders to make cooking the food more streamline. I was on a trip and was going to spend the night after driving 14 hours straight, ordered a cheeseburger and fries, and a strawberry milkshake, and since I was going to get a room, I thought would order a couple bottles of water. We are done with steak n shake! We waited 31 minutes for 2 burgers, 2 fries and 1 order of onion rings. Only three other tables were occupied in the entire restaurant and there were probably 5 cars in the drive thru. While waiting we had the pleasure (sarcasm) of listening to the kitchen staff and manager SHOUTING back and forth to each other about their schedules, other jobs they have, weekend plans, and what was going on at the civic center that night. Very unprofessional. We would have ordered shakes to take with us but didn't have another half hour to kill while they were being prepared. There was no sense of urgency or even the slightest "pep in their step" by anyone in the kitchen at all. This kiosk ordering business is a joke. We placed our own order, got our own drinks, sat ourselves (after challenging ourselves to find a clean table - NO one EVER came out to clean any tables during the hour we were there! and they were pretty much all dirty), and the kiosk has the nerve to ask if we want to leave a tip for the kitchen staff? For what?! We even had to bus our own table when we were done. Cleanliness of this establishment is mediocre at best and the Health Department should make a surprise visit to show them how it should be done. The food was not more than warm and the burgers didn't even meet the edges of the bun. And if you'd like to know why the cheese didn't even melt on your sandwich, well, the manager, who was the ONLY one at the grill cooking, cooked the meat and then put it on the bun bottom to WAIT for the next person to come along at their leisure to add cheese, condiment, and bun top. The fries must have been waiting out back for us before we even entered the restaurant half an hour earlier because I don't know how they could have been recently cooked and waiting under a warmer. The onion rings were the only thing remotely hot because they had to be freshly made. Totally disgusted with this experience. We won't be back. read more

I live in New England and have always come to this location when visiting family, for over 20 years. We love the view of the river any time of year. Today, 2 waters had bugs in them, they forgot my milkshake after bringing me the wrong one, forgot two orders of beans, and then scrambled to bring us the missing items after we told them to forget it after several reminders and then still waiting too long. I also watched the table across from us send their meal back as it was incorrect. We are glad there are other locations because I do love the fries and shakes. read more

I am a fan of Steak & Shake, but this particular location is the absolute worst. The drive through service is interminably slow and they seem to get the order wrong about 75% of the time. My visit there last week was the worst. I ordered a single meal plus a soda. When I got to the window, the worker charged my credit card and then handed me someone else's order. I took a drink of the soda before I drove away and noticed right away that it was not what I had ordered, so I asked the employee manning the drive through window to exchange it for the soda I had ordered. She was very nasty about it and then proceeded to hand me a new drink that also was not a match for my order. As for the food, she acknowledged that they gave me someone else's order and told me that I needed to park in a spot marked for disabled parking while they sorted it out. She then refused to exchange my drink for what I actually had ordered due to "cross contamination" issues. At this point, I was so frustrated that I asked for a refund so that I could go elsewhere. She replied, "We don't give refunds." At that point I decided to drive off without my food or the soda I actually had ordered. Avoid this location. If you want Steak & Shake, then the Morton or Willow Knolls locations are the places to go. The East Peoria location is a train wreck. read more

This location specifically is my favorite! It has been a family tradition every year to come have dinner and a holiday milkshake after the festival of lights. Always request a booth overlooking the river; that's really what its all about. The food is the same as any Steak 'n Shake: incredibly average. Please note that their chicken strips are looking more like nuggets these days. The milkshakes are quite special though. The service here is mediocre, always seems a bit slow moving but friendly. This is one of two good steak n shakes in the area (Morton is also well ran). This location always takes care of you and seats you quickly. Sometimes when they are busy the service isn't the fastest or most attentive, but the staff is never rude. The food is great and the shakes are a treat. What makes this Steak 'n Shake a cool stop though is the location. Somehow, this Steak 'n Shake secured an ideal riverfront location with the entire back side of the restaurant overlooking the Illinois river toward downtown Peoria. Don't be afraid to ask to sit by the window so you can get a decent view while you eat. I would recommend either the garlic burger, frisco melt/burger, or the chili Mac.
