We had to look for a clean table to sit down. Dirty bathrooms. Trash in main dining room. Air-conditioning broken they have a temporary unit in the main dining room. Ice machine not working and they were passing out ketchup packets because the dispenser did not work. Not friendly at all actually they snapped back if you had a question or comment. I don't normally leave reviews, but I feel like this needs to be said. We were excited about trying to steak 'n Shake again after they changed their menu to include better quality foods. We ordered our meat and they were out of ice and out of ketchup. They had packets of ketchup that you could hardly open, and it squirted into my husband's eye, practically blinding him. The service was fast and the guy working the drive through window was professional and very friendly. We were both shocked at what great customer service we received. Haven't been in this location for a few years. Decided to grab a quick dinner. As soon as you walk in you have to order through the counter and it gives you options for dine-in or take-out. We had an original steakburger, a double steakburger with cheese, and cheese fries. They don't have servers anymore like they used to be, self-serve for drinks and clean up after. The tables are dirty and no one was cleaning it up after someone was done eating. We found a clean table, but most are dirty. It would have been nice if someone or anyone would check up on the customers. No one was really visible until they had to call the order number. read more

Saturday, 8/20/2022 - Got to Indiana and decided to go have a Steak 'n Shake burger. We stopped at this location since it was on our way to the area we were staying at. I saw a Texas Roadhouse right across the street. There were plenty of parking. Staff here were very nice. You have to order from a kiosk. The two on the red counter are the kiosk you can use your card. The two kiosk by the window are the ones you can pay with cash. The gentleman behind the counter (he one of the cook), offer to help us with the kiosk should we need help. They do not do the traditional ordering where there's a staff member at the front desk with a cash register taking your order. Upon arrival: Pros: 1) large parking lot. 2) we got in and can pick anywhere to sit. There were no other patrons there. 3) the 2 gentleman behind the counter were nice. Cons: 1) the glass door to enter the restaurant was filthy. It sure needs some cleaning. 2) all the tables, counters, chairs, and floors were dirty. Red counter was caked with... I don't know. It was just dirty and sticky. 3) I had to wipe our own table for us to use. 4) while sitting on my chair, I happen to put both my hands on the bottom of the chair to help pull me forward to the table. Both my hands got super sticky from whatever gunk was on that chair. I felt grossed out. So went to the bathroom to wash my hands again. 5) the ordering kiosks were all dirty. You can't miss seeing all those finger prints on the screens. It was sticky. I grabbed one of their wet towelettes and wiped one of the kiosk screen down, dried it with their paper napkins before using the kiosk. 6) bathroom wasn't too clean. But wasn't bad. 7) the burgers and fries here aren't as good as other Steak 'n Shake I've been to. Fries were over cooked. Lots of fries that were hard and hallow inside. read more

On our way to Nashville, we stopped in at this Steak and Shake for shakes. We parked in the car hop spot and put in our order. 2 of us went into the restaurant to use the facilities. The dining room area had an awful fecal smell. The clocks didn't work on the wall, and the place just looked old and run down. Upon entering the dirty bathroom, it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days. One stall had feces piled up in it and toilet paper all over the ground. I didn't notify the manager on duty, which along with the other workers, were polite. We came back out to the car hop spot only to find the shakes hadn't come out. There wasn't one patron in the restaurant and only 1 car in the drive through. We had been waiting for over 10 min for a few shakes. We sent someone to check up on our order status that said complete on the app. They hadn't even started the shakes! They were just talking. This place is unacceptable and disgusting. I was just here went thru drive up. Had window rolled up and the lady started talking right away I couldn't hear her. I rolled window down and said what? She said I just shut the system down you'll have to come inside. I park my car and look up and there's 3 other cars in drive thru none of which seem to be turned away like I was. I go in. There are no cash registers anymore you just supposed to enter the order on a screen like at McDonald's. There are two kiosks to order instead of cash registers now. You can still see the fry line and the fry cook like always. I said why didn't those other cars get turned away? And the cook who is wearing matrix sunglasses trying to be Morpheus yanks out his earbud and says , oh she said that because we got a bunch of orders at the same time you pulled up. I reply, so the other people in drive thru are being helped right now and because of her I'm at the back of the line behind them now? To which I'm ignored and left to die. Honestly the tech grift / eco friendly grift to cut costs and screw consumers has come too far. Unacceptable. Probably mods will remove this review like they did for my Flatwater review for some incorrect rationale that equates to 'no more free speech for women' and I'll just take it to the chamber of commerce. I will begin this review by saying that I completely understand everyone is short staffed right now. The only thing I ask is that people just do their job. This location shows that it's open here on Yelp, on the Steak N Shake website and it shows they close at midnight on the front door. We ordered food for our family of five on the app and it said that it would be ready in 13-18 minutes. We arrived and parked in the numbered spot as instructed. We called the number and nobody answered. We saw a few employees inside so I walked up to the door. A manager with glasses and a face piercing opened the door and told me that they were closed. Me: I placed an online order. Her: We're closed and it should not have let you place the order. Me: I think it let me because you're open until midnight, here's the online receipt. Her: You'll need to go wherever you ordered it and cancel it. Me: I ordered it from your app... Her: You can cancel it there. I went on the app and there's no place to cancel the order. We got there at 12:15 and got the first available booth. Food is always reliable and the service is friendly and efficient. Try to go at least once every time we visit Indianapolis. I'm only giving this one star because there are no lower options. This was by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had at Steak N Shake. I should have known when I walked into the restaurant to turn around and walk back out, but I really wanted a steak burger. There were 5 people waiting to pay, there were 3 other customers waiting to be seated, and everyone seemed to be trying to do everything instead of working as a team, so nothing was really getting done. I waited 10 minutes for a booth. But the one I was given had not been wiped, so the host had to clean it before I could be seated. My drink order was prepared fairly quickly, and I knew what I wanted, so the order was taken. I was traveling with a friend, and when the orders came out, my burger was on the plate with her cheese fries and her patty melt was on my plate. The waitress looked confused, apologized, and set the plates down. Easy enough for us just to switch the burgers. That was the last time anyone from the early staff bothered to stop by our table. When it was time to leave, my friend wanted a to go cup. She approached the drink station to ask, but before she could say anything, the waitress looked at her and snapped, "What?" Meanwhile, I'm standing at the register waiting to pay. No one acknowledged I was there, made any attempt to communicate they would be with me shortly, or anything remotely professional. After 5 minutes of being ignored, I finally left cash and the ticket on the register and walked out the door. I love Steak N Shake, but nationwide, it's usually a hit or miss. The drive thru operator might benefit from an in service in customer service and active listening. I didn't see a name badge - but he was wearing a shirt and tie - so that makes me think he may be the manager - which is even more concerning. This was the DIRTIEST restaurant I have ever been in. The dining room floors were covered in dirt, food, grease, there is no way they have been swept or mopped in weeks. We've waited 45 minutes in the dining room without getting what we've ordered - and they weren't very busy. We just waited 20 minutes in the drive-thru for 2 Cherry Cokes. I realize people ahead of us probably had food, but there was only one car in front of us so I'm not sure why the wait was so long. They've gotten my order wrong here several times. So my family and I just finished eating dinner here and let me tell you, what a terrible experience! For once it didn't take them forever to seat us like it does at other Steak 'n Shakes we've been at before, that was probably the only good thing about this Steak 'n Shake. Our waitress did an ok job nothing special, screwed up on our ticket and I ordered a Vanilla Coke instead got a diet Vanilla Coke. Our bill was mixed up with a different table and our waitress wanted to know if we just wanted to pay the other table since they paid our bill by accident, the waitresses mixed up the bills, so just re-enter our bill and we'll just pay our original ticket. Now for the cleanliness of this Steak 'n Shake, the nastiest Steak 'n Shake I've ever been to! While paying our bill we noticed the floor where all the employees cooking the food are, by the way none of the employees around the food were wearing hair nets, but anyways the floor was very disgusting!! Clean the place up for goodness sake! People eat here! Our food was about just like any other Steak 'n Shake but just took a lot longer to get, even two junior shakes "to go" took 15 mins to get?!?! Long story short, my family and I will NEVER visit this Steak 'n Shake again. I had medium hopes for this place. I walked in and a waitress explained the menu to me and made recommendations. Sounds easy enough, I thought to myself. I'm not sure what happened here. I had a double steak burger with guacamole. Each ingredient on its own was good, but somehow together - - it just didn't work for me. Yummy guac, meat, bun, sauce, etc, but it was just too greasy and dripped all over me. I ate about half of it before calling it quits. Luckily I had ordered my Nutella shake. I could barely consume half of this. This is odd, but I love Nutella, and for some reason, this Nutella didn't taste as good as I remembered and the shake was probably the best part. We were greeted & seated promptly (within 3 minutes).Our server was very friendly & took our order in a timely manner. The place was a pigsty. Flies everywhere, the cooking area AND cook looked filthy and the men's bathroom smelled like a rancid porta-potty. Apparently, the person who was to clean the bathroom was called away, because they left the cleaning supply caddy IN the filthy sink. We walked in and the first thing the cook yelled at us was, No more milkshakes-only if you've already ordered them. So that of course bummed us out, but we were tired and traveling so we stayed. There appeared to only be 2 people that worked there. They were out of several sauces, napkins, and ketchup containers. We had to put our ketchup in drink lids. There was no one around to help customers when they needed it. Everyone had to order on the kiosk (which isn't a complaint-but we had never used the scanners at the drink machines so we stood there clueless for a while with no one to ask for help.) The bathrooms were filthy. The men's trash was overflowing out into the hall. The food was good, the fries were a little cold. It was even more disappointing when someone came in after us and was able to order a milkshake. My kids were upset about that. Clearly a very understaffed location and I'm sure the workers were doing the best they could. Management needs to take action. read more

I have always been a fan of Steak N Shake since I was a teenager. This, of course was no exception. We arrived for dinner around 6:30pm on a Monday night. The parking lot made it seem they were really busy, but in fact we had no wait in getting a table for two. We did have to stand by the table while they cleaned it off, but nothing major. Our server came to our table pretty promptly and took our drink order. She returned promptly and took the rest of our order. I ordered my all time favorite, Frisco melt with an order of large cheese fries. My partner ordered the bacon lovers burger and fries. The wait for the food was a little longer than usual; but again, nothing major. While we waited our milkshakes were delivered. Mine was just fine, but my partner asked for no whip cream or cherry (the best parts, right?!) and his had both on the shake. They took it back and corrected it as soon as she realized they made a mistake. When our food arrived, again mine was perfect, but not so much on the other. He was told that the burger came with mayonnaise and ketchup but in fact it did not have either. Also, for being a "bacon lovers" burger they were pretty skimpy on the bacon. Our server came back about two other times to check on us before we were done with our meal. Overall I had a fine experience, but with those two minor hiccups it keeps it from getting more than three stars. read more

I don't know what happened to this place in the last 3-4 years. I am SO sick of them always getting my order wrong. About once every couple months I decide to try them out again. Today there was NOBODY in the drive-through line but me...so they obviously were not busy. I ordered a hamburger Royale and fries, so it's no like I placed an order for 6 different shakes and 6 different meals. I stated what I wanted on the hamburger. Never did I mention I wanted bacon or cheese. I can't pick the cheese off. They also.gave me 2 patties instead of one...so yeah basically a completely different burger than I ordered. It seems they always mess up the hamburger. After yet again paying for a meal I won't eat...this will be my last update as I won't be eating at this location again. I'm sick of going through the line again (+15 minutes) and/or calling the manager and them saying they will write my name on a note near the cash register for a free hamburger. Now if this happened once or even twice I'd let it slide...but the parking lot was empty, line was empty, and literally the last time I was there a mo the or two ago and ordered a burger...it was also wrong. I got home realized they gave me the completely wrong order after waiting a long time with only one car in front of me. They were rude giving me my wrong food. I love Steak and Shake, but this was the worst experience I've had at one. I ordered a beef salad and was served a chicken salad (the receipt had it correct as a beef salad though). We waited so long to be brought menus, to put in our order, and to be served that it wasn't worth the time to have them try to fix it. I ordered guacamole with the salad, which was 99 cents extra, and it was about a teaspoon's worth -- looked so little in the small condiment cup it was served in that I chuckled when I saw it. Other than a few not-so-fresh lettuce pieces, the salad was good though. I guess I should have known they were too busy for decent service when we were pointed (instead of walked to and seated) to our table -- the one with the dirty rag. Other minor issues: We were given one set of silverware (for two people). Also, the men's bathroom was out of paper towels. Should have gone next door to Wendy's instead. read more
