I LOVE this location and head straight for it every time I come to Indy. While it isnt super easy to access from the highway, I still find it worth it. On the most recent visit I ordered ahead online and was able to pickup at the drive thru window. The staff was helpful and prompt. I got the chopped salad, Chicago dog, Chicago beef, and fries. For dessert you must get the Eclair cake. Everything was fresh and delicious. On previous visits I have gone inside and the dining room was clean. I really liked visiting Portillo's! It was somewhere that I had heard a lot about but just recently got to try. I ordered the regular Chicago style hot dog minus the sport peppers and I really enjoyed it. I don't think I've ever ordered a hot dog from a restaurant but it was really good, especially with all the toppings. The atmosphere was cool to see all the Indy history on the walls. I think this would be a hit with kids. Of course I tried their chocolate cake as well as the lemon and both were okay but the chocolate was definitely much better. read more

Great food! I try to eat here when visiting the Indianapolis area. If you're looking for fast food/quick service, be sure to give Portillo's a try. I recommend the Italian beef (hot pepper over sweet IMO), and chili cheese dog. Clean restrooms, friendly service, excellent food. I wish we had one closer to where I live. read more

First time there and it was OK. Menu a little confusing as you have to know if you want your sandwich dry , somewhat wet, or dunked. The websites says dunked in gravy but I'm assuming it's an jus for the Italian roast beef. My wife ordered a salad. They yelled out my number , it was in a to go sack even though we told them dine in, and my wife's salad was missing. Took another five minutes to get that sorted out. So in summary , not a great experience. Sandwich was dry, order was wrong, but fries were good. Might try them again with lower expectations. read more

Portillo's is always great if you enjoy a Chicago style hotdog, they are so yummy and fresh made for you. I've never had anything here that I didn't enjoy. I love their chopped salad as well. We really all enjoy something each time we stop by on a trip. There is an odd smell the last couple times, not sure what it is but it's not pleasant. The food thankfully makes up for it and it's not so bad that you can't enjoy the food and smells from the kitchen. Ever since I experienced the Avon location I've been wanting to visit a Portillo's again for a Chicago Style hot dog. Today I was on my way to the Elite Event at PANA Donuts and wanted to eat lunch before getting near all those donuts. This location is virtually identical to the Avon location in layout, decorations and ambiance. The various stuff decorating the dining rooms is like being in a museum. A lot of history in shown in those photographs. I ordered the Portillo's Beef Hot Dog in the Jumbo size which is not really that big just thicker than a normal sized hot dog. I also ordered an order of Onion Rings which were very crispy and crunchy. I loved the hot dog and everything on it but mine was minus the mustard because I asked for it to be withheld. I have been a lifelong fan of Portillo's but my sandwich last week was very disappointing. The "Italian" beef was well cooked but had NO seasoning whatsoever (Un-spiced Beef). The hot peppers also were low in flavor and low in quantity. Instead of a Italian beef with hot peppers I was served a plain beef with some plain peppers. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Going downhill fast. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger and used the drive thru. Got home and literally it was a very overcooked patty, 2 undercooked bacon strips, on a bun. No cheese, no toppings at all. I love Portillos! I got a chocolate cake milkshake, chocolate cake, and a chicago dog. The milkshake is perfect. It's one of my favorite treats! The hot dog had a tough casing which was unusual but the bun was pillowy soft. I ordered through the drive through and it was contactless. I was there this morning for "free Sandwich day". Got a free hamburger with everything but cheese and asked for it to be cut in 1/2, plus a small order of fries. Hamburger was not cut in 1/2, meat was cold and burnt and a piece if lettuce was brown and the fries on the bottom were hard, like they were sitting for a long time. Definitely not fresh. My brother has been telling me to try Portillo's for months now and I finally stopped in today. I knew to expect Chicago-style street food but I was not expecting The Prohibition-era throwback theme. I loved it! They had me at big band music before I even tried the food. We just picked up food to go but I'd love to dine in and explore more. I had the Italian beef sandwich with sweet peppers and cheese fries. The beef was really tender and flavorful and the bread was just the right amount of chew to stand up to the gravy. The cheese fries were pretty good too. I would definitely order again but there are lots of things on the menu that look delicious. I've heard amazing things about the chocolate cake shake but I was too full after just a sandwich and fries. The staff were friendly too. This Portillo's is like the other Portillo's, but it just so happens to be on the south side of Indy. We went through the drive-thru, and I guess the speaker must have not been working, because there was a person standing in front of the speaker taking everyone's order and payment. This time, I got the whitefish sandwich, which was a good choice because I was feeling in the mood for a fish sandwich, so it all worked out in my favor. The fish sandwich comes on a brioche bun with tartar sauce. The fried fish was hot and the sauce and lettuce were cool, and the whole sandwich was very satisfying. Another thing that was satisfying were the onion rings, which were super crunchy. They are almost too crunchy -- if you're trying to eat with any amount of grace and decorum, don't get the onion rings because everyone around you will be assaulted with the sound of your loud crunching. Very uncouth (and yet very tasty). According to the lady standing in front of the speaker, they "don't have kid-anything," so if you're looking for a kids menu, you can just sod off. There ain't one. You'll need to order food for your child off the regular menu. But they will make their cheeseburgers and hot dogs plain, so that's helpful. read more

This was my first time trying Portillos and it lived up to the hype! I got the half beef and half sausage and it did not disappoint and I could only finish half of it! The cheese fries and strawberry milkshake were also delicious! I'm excited to go back and try more off of the menu, particularly the chocolate cake shake that I've heard so much about. This location had a large parking lot, tons of seating, and a private room; so seems like it would be a great place for a group dinner!
