We drove down to Vero just to drive around. There wasn't whole lot at the exit but we had been fans of Steak 'n Shake many years ago. We walked and we were immediately greeted by a lovely lady. We realized once we walked in we weren't in the past. They don't take orders at the counter and they didn't have waiters anymore. You ordered in a machine- then sat yourself. There were about 10 other people in the restaurant over three different parties. We sat down and I got our drinks. You receive a QR code printed with your receipt that turns on the soda machine. Once you stop for a second or two it shuts off. This worked out wonderfully and I'm happy to do this do they can save money from people taking advantage. We ordered 4 burgers- 2 kids meal combos with milk and applesauce. 1 western combo, and one garlic combo. The burgers were just as good as we remember them to be. We were a little disappointed that they had simplified their menu so much but this is not fault to this location, rather corporate. The kids ate the burgers up and we enjoyed that they didn't have to eat French fries. The western burger had enough sauce that my husband didn't have to put ketchup on it which is probably the first time over ever seen that happen. My garlic burger was delicious and juicy and the seasoning on the bun really topped it off. The French fries were just as we remembered them- thin, crunchy, and tasty. I can tell that the leadership takes pride in the store but also that COVID probably hit them hard. There are a couple of things that could improve a bit. It could be a bit cleaner and there must be something going on in the bathroom because it was VERY wet/musty. We have one where we live so we won't be back at this particular location frequently but if we lived nearer we would totally make a it a treat once a month or so. You now have to order from a kiosk. They had no milkshakes. They had no lettuce, no tomatoes, no onions, no hotdogs, no onion rings. Then you have to scan a ticket to get a drink when you pay for drink. The ketchup dispenser is broken. All the salt packets were moist and wet. You couldn't even use the salt. And no shoe strong fries that they are known for. They use different fries. And the restrooms needed some serious attention. Very disappointed. read more

I haven't had Steak 'n Shake in years but had always previously loved it when I got to eat at one. That was not the case today. No car in the drive thru except me. I ordered a meal and upgraded to a shake. Employee was super nice. I paid & got my items. Hopped on I-95 and looked down at my shake, it wasn't even filled or close to the rim of the cup. Grabbed my fries & put in my cup holder, they were well done which I didn't ask for. My hamburger was greasier than I've ever had from any other location. Resturant was very dirty - that should have been a clue. Service was miserably slow - ordered at 01:51 and the first thing we found was they were out of most self serve beverage cups (only has the small) no attempt to re-stock. And we sat and sat and sat and sat finally 1/2 hour after ordering I went up to find a manager - yep he was on the grill - with food out, un refrigerated, and not being kept warm after cooking. At 2:23 I asked for a refund and walked out. Do yourself a favor - avoid this location at all cost. I hope the Indian River county health department does what they should. read more

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. We were on a road trip and stopped here because I was hungry. In this town you have two options: Steak N Shake and Cracker Barrel, which had an hour long wait, thus we chose Steak & Shake. We decided to dine inside. We went to the kiosk and ordered a grill cheese (2.79) and the triple steak burger (3.99-this item was on the $4 menu). We checked out and our bill was $10.24. How could that be? Well, we were actually charged $4.29 for the grilled cheese and $5.28 for the triple steak burger. When we asked about the price difference the worker stated, "The prices have went up." Isn't this false advertising? Shouldn't someone from corporate change the kiosk as prices change? We had no choice but to wait for our subpar meal. It took approximately 1/2 hour to get (& the place was not busy at the time). My grill cheese was average. My husband's sandwich was greasy. Every bite he took I could see a lot of Grease spilling out of it. The floors were extremely sticky. Many of the tables were dirty. I am soooooo glad I didn't read the YELP reviews before hoping off the interstate and swinging in here. I am fan of Steak 'n Shake but there's been a few that I've had less than favorable experiences at but fortunately this wasn't one of them. When I see a poor review I always hope that it's just a snap shot of a single bad experience, when I see a number of them and I've already taken a seat and placed my order I pray that the grill and grease is hot enough to protect me from anything bad going on in the back. I have to say I didn't experience anything here but good - arriving just after 11:00 am on Saturday this place was cleaned and polished, the service was pretty good although it was a little slower than I expected being the lunch crowd hadn't arrived yet. I had a triple double steak burger all the way with fries and it was a perfect representation of the brand. I also passed on the complimentary water and got a ultimate banana shake minus the cherry and whipped cream, in case you didn't know the ultimate uses real chopped bananas, the regular banana shakes uses flavoring and no bananas (spend the extra money). The staff was friendly, my order was delicious and accurate and the prices are ridiculously cheap. If I could give them negative reviews I would. First, I ordered off the mobile app thinking it would Be more efficient. Once you place the order and arrive it tells you to call (772)794-0095. I called and the lady asked me if I ordered on the web- I told no I didn't I ordered for the mobile app. I asked if they have my order and I understand it's more than likely not ready yet and I could park or go thru the drive through if that would be a better option for them so they didn't have to come outside. The lady proceeded to tell me she doesn't know if they have my order and I can go through the drive thur but she chuckled and said she would not recommend it. At this point I asked well do you have my order or not because my credit card has been charged. She said "I don't know I'm really busy right now". The lady then hung up on me. I tried to call back 4 more times and they now won't answer the phone. What a joke. SMH. *** come on terrible customer service. Okay I bet she is very busy but if the mobile app isn't something the business is equipped to handle while busy then TURN IT OFF!!!! I tried to call corporate and of course they're closed because it's a weekend. Terrible terrible customer service. First time ever here ... it has been one of my bookmarked restaurants for a long time. This is really a fast food restaurant, but with table service, reminiscent of a diner. Go for the original Double Steakburger with cheese. It's the featured item and 99% of the reason to go here....and it's great: old fashioned, smashed, fried, oniony, greasy and dee-lish! Sprinkle a dusting of their fry seasoning on it and on the fries that accompany the steakburger and you're in fast food heaven. read more

As Florida "reopens" for business, I am going to focus on sanitation protocols, the availability of hand sanitizer, the wearing of masks, social distancing, and the like. Steak 'n Shake did everything right. We went through the drive-through; but, noticed that all employees wore masks and gloves; and, that the gloves were changed as tasks were completed. The burgers seem to have shrunk! I need a triple steak burger to get a full meal. Prices are very reasonable though, so even a triple burger is only $5. I grew up with Steak & Shake and am always excited to visit from California to have one, but I've been disappointed my last few visits, this one included. Just not as special, seems just like a retro styled McDonald's. Service is hit-or-miss. Our server was friendly, but not very knowledgeable. So we came down for a family trip and not much open for Easter week that the family wanted but not only that the in-laws like this place. (I DON'T KNOW WTF FOR!) The girl at the window 2 out of the 3-4 visits (Isha) is rude and impersonal and couldn't be more lacking of customer service, friendliness, attention to detail, and personality. Yep I'm calling her out cuz she was rude to my husband on one of the visits over a simple order request and this visit was just another disappointing experience. From the beginning we knew it wasn't going to turn out 100% correct. This time the order was taken so poorly I expected it to be wrong and it was. I checked it as best I could in the car and it seemed somewhat ok but once home the sandwiches were not correct. What was crazy is when I ordered during the process she interrupted several times telling us to wait a minute and I repeated to ensure she would get things right. She rudely said "YEA I GOT THAT" --- hmmm NO YOU DIDNT based on how things turned - you might want to listen with less attitude or find a job that you can clean instead. That way you don't have to deal with people. I so far haven't eaten my food ordered since it hasn't been correct each time. Waste of time and money coming here! Now let me tell you about their gross tasting sodas. Every time I got a different one and they all tasted gross. Dr Pepper, Sprite, and Lemonade... what do you put in them some nasty cherry syrup? They all tasted disgusting!! I couldn't drink any of them. My family all got shakes. I don't like shakes. I wish I did cuz I might actually be able to have a beverage with my meal! We're longtime fans of Steak & Shake, so it was an easy decision where to go for dinner when we spent the night at a motel near Hwy 95. The plethora of one-star Yelp reviews almost dissuaded us - and I'm glad I ignored their judgment. To be frank, I think many of those reviews are unfair. Spouse enjoys the Chili Deluxe - a bowl of excellent chili topped with shredded cheddar cheese and cold, chopped, raw onions. He notes that there is an excellent contrast between the hot chili and the cold of the onions - good mouth "feel." When I order their chili, I go for the 5-Way, the above served atop a portion of spaghetti, an option that my gluten free partner must eschew. I had promised myself a milkshake -- according to a their self-press, S&S was #1 rated in a Zagat survey about milkshakes, and the designation is well merited. I tried the Turtle shake, which I wouldn't do again -- as far as I can tell, the chocolate and caramel sauces are squirted into the bottom of the glass and the shake then added. Which leaves you with the yummies refusing to come up your straw. Ah well, that's why you get a spoon!. To my shake I added one of their smallest burgers - two generous patties, with standard toppings. Not a small meal at all -- but should your tummy need more feeding, there are many, many options which will give you more meat, more toppings, more sides, more, more, more. The restaurant and the restroom were clean. The service was prompt and friendly. We both enjoyed our lunch! But then at S&S we almost always do. Ah yes - One thing about every S&S - they will always try to seat you near the kitchen, perhaps because it is easier for the servers, shorter distance to walk.
