This place really shakes it up! Typically I have a great meal with great service but this trip really turned that upside down. The food was still great but the service was terrible. Upon entering the steak and shake we were offered a booth near the front. It had a great vantage point and things were off to a great start. Our waitress came over to us, I don't remember her name but she looked like a Pudge, probably a Madge. She asked if we were ready to order, we said yes and then she said hold on and then walked away for 10 minutes. Once we finally did order we were excited to start our meal! Having never been in one of these, and hoping it was a cool steak house with nice milkshakes, figured I'd stop in after a long ride back to the east coast after a long day riding from Tampa. Pulled in, tried to figure out the process and quickly figured out it was a stupid fast food franchise place. I was told to have a seat, and my order would be taken... the end... never saw food, a "waiter," or received any attention again. There was a good crowd of people, mostly young non professional couples or families who seemed to enjoy the food and ambiance, but I left after 30 minutes or so. God help us. We almost starved. We couldn't get seated because no one was bussing tables. After we waited and finally asked for a table to be bused, we were seated. We got drinks quickly. We ordered steaks and burgers. We had three tickets for the six people at our table. I went to the restroom and an employee used the toilet and walked out. No hand washing. Horrifying. So was the restroom. I seriously considered cleaning it for them. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. No shakes. No food. No one in the entire place was being served. The tickets in the queue were stacking up. No one was expediting. I seriously wanted to go back and help them cook. The poor server, new to his job, tried so hard. Finally my husband spoke to a manager and got out milkshakes made for us. The manager said their stove had issues. Um, we are watching burgers cook. Where are they going? Not to customers inside. I did watch employees leave with food and drinks from their shift. They began to bring us food. Three of six at our table got dinners. Unfortunately it wasn't right. The waiter said, " I think they are just throwing anything on plates to send it out." He took some back. The manager comped one of our meals on our ticket. The other orders appeared when we were almost finished eating. They were not right either. My friends ate them anyway. They did not get any discounts on their food. We found out that half the shift quit. However there were PLENTY of people there to run a restaurant. Most staff were standing around doing nothing. It has been years since I have visited SteaknShake. I enjoyed the food and the service. I have always loved the nostalgia atmosphere. I enjoyed a small steak burger with a small salad and a Diet Coke. I wanted to save room for the old fashion milk shake. I was not disappointed at all. Steak 'n Shake is nothing to write home about. Their food is acceptable (nothing great, but never terrible), the shakes are huge and pretty tasty, and their fries are reliably delicious. What makes this one pretty awesome is the service and cleanliness. It's never been a mess when we've been in there, and the servers are always younger (probably high schoolers) and always super friendly and silly. Anytime we hit up this restaurant it's inevitably late, and quite often we are inebriated. The servers couldn't care less, and almost enjoy the shenanigans. I informed the young lady that I was waiting on someone and ordered a soda... And waited... And waited... The young lady was attentive and I didn't just want to take up a booth and not order so I requested their sider sampler. It was tasty... If not a bit greasy. Once my muddy arrived we chowed down and it was enjoyable. The problem I encountered was it seems the young lady who was my server either went on lunch or finished her shift and her replacement was not as diligent. Took forever to get my check. This was the worst Steak 'n Shake I have ever been to. The bathroom was disgusting and the floors were sticky throughout the whole establishment. I ordered the Cajun burger and asked for no onions. Instead they put no toppings on my burger. The top bun was topped with excessive grease and Cajun seasoning. The bun was warm and the patties were cold. Usually I'm satisfied with Steak 'n Shake but I highly advise to avoid this one. The only redeeming quality about this place was my White Chocolate milkshake but it's pretty hard to mess that up. I'm glad I did not see the bathroom before I ate my meal. As I opened the door to the ladies room I encountered and overwhelming stench of a combination of sewer and dumpster. Inside the ladies room, the trash bin next to the sink was overflowing onto the floor. Inside the stall the sanitary receptacle was overflowing, and overflowing onto the floor, with used "sanitary products", which obviously is completely disgusting and not at all sanitary. Between that and the stench, I think this is the grossest public bathroom I have ever seen, and I am not exagerating. That said, our server was adequate and the food was good even it took a while but unfortunately the filthiness and nastiness of the bathroom overshadowed what would have otherwise been a half decent experience. I looked for a manager or somone who looked to be in charge and didnt see anyone. They were very busy and the cashier and kitchen areas appeared chaotic. We had an overall good experience at this location. We were looking for a quick stop to feed a hungry crowd and this did it for us. They were surprisingly quick with our meals and shakes. At these low prices it beats most other fast food places. The meals come with shoestring fries, not a personal favorite but I gobble it up every time. The seasoned salt on the table helps. I tried the Reese's PB milkshake. I'll say this, all their milk shakes are delicious. But with this one I was expecting a PB flavored shake with chopped Reese's cups and it came with vanilla instead. Still good, just not what I was looking for. So if you have a strong preference, be sure to ask before you order.
