Visited Steel Tattooz last Saturday for a new tattoo. The shop was very clean and had a great atmosphere. All the staff were very inviting and friendly all giving feedback on the design. I am just disgusted. I have over 30 tattoos and 10 piercings. I am not newbie. I have never had an artist not back up their work. I got a piercing done and it fell out pretty quickly. I went in today after explaining it on the phone. They said no problem, come on in and then I got there and he wanted me to pay again! Wtf?! Never heard of anything so unprofessional. Disgusted. My friend and I each got a small tattoo done here on August 6, 2020. We were excited to come here because we've heard good things from people we know and have seen some great tattoos come out of here. Ultimately, I wasn't perfectly happy with mine as the lines weren't all the same width but it wasn't bad enough to complain. Hers was much worse (photo attached). The main circle of the sun part of the tattoo was very wavy and crooked. Though we weren't happy with our tattoos, we left without saying anything because she had a flight back to her home in Arizona the next day and we figured most people wouldn't look closely enough to notice. However, only a couple weeks later, hers began fading horribly (photo attached). Today was the first time she's been in town since then so she went into Steel Tattooz to speak to the owner and ask about a refund or free touch-up. The owner was not there so she spoke to John who told her that the ankle is just a normal place to fade and she could pay full price for a touch-up. Later, the owner, Brent, called (per her request) and told her the same thing, that they "tell people it's not a good place for a tattoo" (which we were not told when we received ours) so fading is normal (which seems odd as it began fading only a few weeks later and in the summer when she was not wearing shoes that would rub against it). When she explained that there were problems even before the fading, he didn't have much sympathy and questioned why she didn't come in earlier (which was because she lives in another state). I was a bit shocked how little the owner cared about the issue, not even agreeing to see the tattoo when she offered to come in again or send a photo. I would've assumed the owner of a tattoo parlor would've at least pretended to show some sympathy over someone who was unhappy with the artwork that will be on their body forever from their shop. In the end, she was offered a $25 voucher for a touch-up. I'm usually not one to leave a negative review (feel free to visit my Yelp profile), but I just felt this would be helpful information to know before getting a tattoo here. This was the worst tattoo experience I've ever had! Brent, one of the owners did my tattoo. I thought I was safe with a part owner of the business doing my "sleeve". Boy was I wrong! He berated his staff several times while he was working on me. It was obvious he was pissed off. If I asked to have something moved he had an attitude. The way he positioned things were horrible. He made everything look tribal which I never said I wanted. He took my beautiful phoenix and ruined it with heavy thick black lines and on top of everything... he misspelled "feel"!!!!! He spelled it FEAL!!!. Because of the bad placement, I couldn't see it. My daughter pointed it out to me. I wanted him to not only fix the misspelled word but also the thick tribal lines he made that just come out of no where. But I honestly was afraid he'd make it worse so I'm paying AGAIN to fix his terrible work with a different artist. Besides the horrible end product, the " customer" part of the whole procedure was obsolete. We met for like 10 minutes to discuss creating a sleeve. How do you get a feel for what a client wants in 10 minutes??? If I wanted to change something in the initial layout on my arm, he had an attitude about it. I had all the signs to just run and I didn't. Now it's costing me double just to fix his crappy work. I'm telling everyone I know about my experience. I hope you read this and think twice before you book an appointment with Brent. read more

I've had two awesome experiences with the guys at Steel Tattoo thus far: 1) Got a tattoo (approx. 10/2015): My sister and I got matching watercolor tattoos with Eric. He was super helpful in the design process and his work is fantastic. He's a nice guy, kept the conversation flowing throughout the process, and was very attentive to pain/comfort level during. I felt the aftercare instructions were good, they made sure we understood how to care for our tattoos. Basically, knowledgeable and caring staff. I would definitely come back for work here when I'm in town. 2) Bought a gift certificate (12/29/2016): I emailed the general contact link regarding getting a gift certificate and got a response almost immediately. Turns out it was the owner Brad. He was SUPER helpful getting me hooked up with a gift certificate as I live out of state. These guys are great. Go check them out. read more

The prices are high but it's very worth it. But whatever you do, do not have John Kiesling tattoo you. He doesn't know what he's doing. Every body I know who's been tattooed by him have utterly regretted it. He pushes down too hard making even the least painful spots unbearable. And they turn out looking horrible too. He is not worth the money. But Travis and Brent are both amazing. read more

I went on my birthday to get a tongue piercing when I talked about a longer bar and placement he shut me down immediately, after I got it done I felt like it was very far back and my tongue felt to big for the piercing and it hadn't even swollen up all the way. A couple red flags went up so I went and talked to the piercers at gamma piercing (wonderful people btw) I wanted to stay local given I love my piercers in Howell/heartland area and when I talked to him in my store he was very nice but I needed to see them they are the most reputable people I know, they have done all my friends piercing and talk to you forever about after care and what you can and can't do plus beautiful jewelry! (Which this guy didn't do he also didn't show me the dot on my tongue to clarify where I wanted it) Anyways four of their piercers all told me they wanted to remove it immediately the bar was to small for the placement and it was to far back for how my tongue is swelling being 3/4 in it would have been better. We removed it and went home, the next morning I talked to brent and he was super angry with me told me I should have done my research, I didn't listen to him and the people I talked to were idiots and why didn't I go to gamma then, I was to nervous to get this and uneducated, I've been planning this piercing for 3 years and know 10 people that have gotten this piercing and everyone including the piercers at gamma said that it was wrong, Brent eventually said "do you want me to re pierce it or give you a refund" and my boyfriend said yes we want a refund he said well we can't give you one. I asked why he was so mad at me given I kept calm I was just crying a bit and I asked repeatedly for an adult conversation and I just wanted to talk to him about it and he said I wasted his time and what did I want from him. Maybe not to fuck up my piercing? Maybe to not be so full of himself and do it so quickly, maybe if he was slower and more patient it would of been done okay. He acted like a toddler I think this has happened a bunch to him and this is fun for him. I recommend not coming here his receptionist was nice and everyone else seemed fine but the owner has anger issues. read more

Update #2 - went in tonight and saw Brad (owner) and Eric (artist) to see what could be done about my tattoo. Eric thinks he can fix it without doing a cover up which is fabulous! This is a simple but meaningful tribute to my sister who passed away. Brad is giving me the cost of the original tattoo in credit towards the fix. I have to wait 7 days for my appointment but I'm super excited! read more

After such a great experience, I have gone from getting a small arm piece to getting a half sleeve and partial back piece. What a joke!! My daughter is leaving soon, she enlisted in the Air Force and wanted to have I love you Mom. And I love you Dad. In our handwriting on her ribs. The tattoo is the size of a credit card at best. Those words only......no artwork whatsoever and Erin Dillenbeck wanted to charge her $250-300 to do it. Hahaha honey if you priced it that high because you had no interest in doing it, say so, because BS pricing like that will help you put yourself out of business. read more

I originally inquired with Eric Clark about a tattoo after seeing his work online. After a while, I fell in love with a piece by Brent Davis and thought that the style of this tattoo he did would work really well with what I wanted. I organized a meeting with him, and drove my ass all the way to Hartland (about an hour and a half) to meet with him about what I wanted. I brought physical pics for inspiration, he took them and listened to what I wanted then asked me to e-mail them to the shop too. I did immediately. He said he would 'create something really cool', and we book an appointment for my b-day. I asked him for a quote, and he said he usually charged "120/hr", and it wouldn't take more than two. On my birthday, as I'm driving the hour and a half again to get this tattoo I've been looking forward to for months, I get a call from the shop. "Brent doesn't have the inspiration pictures you sent, can you text them to us?" I get a sinking feeling. This is probably a bad sign, but I have been looking forward to it for so long. I have the friend I'm with RESEND the pics, which are sitting in FB Messenger, unread by Steel Tattoo. When I get there, I have to re-explain to Brent what we talked about. Then, he takes one of the many I brought and photocopies it. What? He is completely unprepared, and hasn't even seen these pictures. I tell him what I want, and he acts like it's the biggest inconvenience for him ever. I think that he's going to incorporate the other aspects as he begins doing the tattoo. I again explain what I want. He slaps the stencil on my leg, and tells me he's ready to start. I stand up, and show him how crooked it is. He begins to get really rude and acts like it's my fault that it was crooked. I want my daughter's name on it as it appears on the inspiration pic - he said, "I was just going to freehand it in my handwriting." Umm.. Now, I should have left - these are all warning signs. However, I was so ready and so excited for this tattoo, and loved the tattoo in his portfolio so much that I was an idiot and stuck around. He repeatedly said that he "was the best line guy in Michigan" throughout the process, and refused any other interaction during the entire tattoo. As he finished, I become horrified. He just slapped one picture on my thigh and went to town. He didn't incorporate any of my other inspirations. He BARELY cared what he was doing, and as he sat with me all he did was continuously complain about the other people coming in. JUST A WARNING - if you're going here to get something simple, like a heart, or a semicolon, Brent Davis is going to make fun of you to his other customers. He outright scoffed at a woman who wanted to get a semicolon to support a friend as she worked with the desk clerk to get scheduled. Now, I can't see my tattoo really. Some of the lines look really thick and some look thin (best line guy in Michigan, yeah.. sure..), they are wavy and it looks incredibly primitive. It is basically what I asked for, and nothing else - there was no pre-thought or artistic vision. He completely ignored the rest of my pictures. It is the bare minimum. I look at it as I'm getting up to pay and feel my stomach turn. My daughter's name looks awful and doesn't match the rest of the tattoo, the lines are weird and wavy, and it looks amateur. Then, as I'm getting ready to go the desk clerk tells me it is going to be $500. FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS!?!?! This tattoo took at the maximum 2 hours, and he obviously did absolutely no prep work. He just copied some clip art and POORLY transferred it to my leg. I asked him why he quoted me $120/hr, and as such it should only be at max 300 with the deposit I already paid. He said, "I don't know why I would tell you that, that's not my price." Then why did you???!! Afterwards, someone reached out to me on the FB and I shared my story. After that, they said they would follow up. Despite ME following up, I never heard anything else. This is a warning - if you go here, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH BRENT DAVIS. HE IS A COCKY AMATEAUR, and COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. You will not get the tattoo you're paying for. At $500, I should be able to smile every time I look at this - but all I see is the shitty linework and hear his stupid voice saying, "I'm the best line guy in Michigan." Yeah, RIGHT!!! Got a Groupon worth $400 for Christmas. When i went to make an appointment the owner told me that they would not honor the Groupon. He said that they had changed ownership. He was very rude and not willing to accommodate me in any way. I contacted Groupon to see what recourse I have. read more

The nature of this review is not on their work, which was good. This is because they are unprofessional and take advantage of people. They gave a price for a tattoo and never mentioned at all that the price would or could raise. During the tattoo process there was nothing new added to what they agreed to do, and it took less time than they originally expected. In the end they added another $100 on the price and would not allow the costumer to leave until they got the money in full. Not once during the time there did they even say it would be more. When the owner was questioned about it he treated the customer like they were incompetent and in doing so posed as very disrespectful. I would not recommend this place to anyone that expects to be treated fairly and with open communication to what is going on and what to expect. read more
