A really well rounded gift shop with a ton of variety. If you can't find a gift here, what are you even doing? A number of items you see from popular brands like Knock Knock- sarcastic socks, notes with attitude, but also lots of stuff that looks locally inspired and / or local made. Home items, wedding, birthday, Calgary and Canada, jewelry, fun mugs. Books, the list goes on and on. I took a long walk around Calgary yesterday. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day and I wasn't about to miss it. Interesting people were out, cute dogs were being walked by their owners, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Part of my stroll was down the "hip" Uptown area of 17th Avenue. What drew me into Steeling Home from my walk was an on sale desk fan that was displayed outside on a cute antique table. The price was right, but I knew darn well that it would be hard to get it in the suitcase for my eventual trip back to the San Francisco Bay Area. I might still change my mind on that.... Anyway, I decided to stroll around inside and really enjoyed exploring the many pockets of interesting stuff this relatively small store holds. It has books, antiques, jewelery, and much more in-between. The people watching was fun too, with a fresh touch of Portlandia thrown in. I'm glad I stopped in and reminded myself that marching around a new City is fun, and stopping to explore some of its quirks is even better. read more

This place is dangerous... (only because of the damage it may do to your wallet). I made the bittersweet mistake of telling Wendy P that if she had a favorite local gift shop, I wouldn't mind going since I was in the market to purchase a few gifts. So, of course she took me straight to Steeling Home and with their fun collection of all kinds of unique treasures and gifts, I ended up spending a lot of $$ on a few things that weren't even necessarily what I was looking for! So yes - this place is rather expensive. However, they have an awesome selection of everything from home goods and accessories, books, trinkets, seasonal items, toys, jewelry, cards, and so much more. I ended up purchasing a random pen and birthday card for my dad, a set of cool coasters for my husband, and a package of monkey key holders. I could have bought a ton more stuff given more time in the store and an unlimited budget! Steeling Home is located on 17th Avenue, which I definitely want to explore more on my next visit to Calgary; there are tons of cute boutiques and restaurants in the area. There were dozens of people at this store today; considering it was nearly 32 degrees below zero, Steeling Home is stealing folks out into the cold and into Christmas shopping. Once I entered I understood why. Here you will find all the unique gifts and items that just scream "comfort". The store is broken down into what looks like areas, there is an area for fun and funny gifts, an area for toys, an area for that special coffee mug, an area for scarves and comfy hats, an area for house mats, an area for Christmas items and last but not least an area for mailboxes! It is just extremely fun, and it really would appeal to the perplexed buyer who probably doesn't know their distant cousin or workmate. So at least Steeling Home is a sure bet because everything in here is lovely. The only thing I would say was there are way too many things here to see, so after awhile it is a sensory overload, but a sure bet to find that unique crazy item for that loved one or even liked one. read more

Steeling has quickly sky rocketed to a place on my 'Top 5 Shops To Visit on 17th Ave' list. How can I describe this store? It's chalked full of things and things; Whether you're looking for new cushions, coasters, notebooks, kitchen utensils, games, knick knacks, greeting cards, etc etc., Steeling Home will surely have something that catches your eye. I can best describe it as a contemporary version of Pier 1 Imports meets Twisted Goods and Land & Sea. Funky stuff at every corner, with creative and odd gift ideas at every glance. This is a tough review. While there are some really cool stuff, a lot of it I found to be junky garbage. I'm not really a trinket person myself. And not to be rude, but a lot of the stuff was "hipster". I did pick up the redneck wine glass for my mom and she loves it! And got a couple random books. We were on a hunt for unique fun gifts for my parents, so I think different time and different goal might be a better experience. I like to begin my browsing in the eclectic books section, where you will find so many unique and eye-catching how-to books, compilations of lists, photo artbooks, etc. Their houseware and decorative pieces are very cute, it's hard not to make huge purchases every time I shop here! The jewelry selection is also quite diverse and beautiful. Fun rings, pretty necklaces, some scarves, and hats even. My mom once bought a sweet bench whose seat was made with woven fabrics and it was so unique; such a nice addition to her home! Review #12 of Yelp's 30 Day Challenge 2012 Steeling Home is one of those places I just can't seem to stay away from. And a store I'm better off leaving my debit card at home. Though much of the merchandise is the same from visit to visit, I always find something I'd like to take away. From the oodles of fun little books and journals, to the old-style hooks, mailboxes and otherwise, it's a trinket hunter's dream. The front west corner of the store seems to be the "seasonal" section. Right now it's full of ornaments and other Christmas related goods. In the back east corner, you'll find a section dedicated to children's books and toys. Everywhere in between is covered in jewelry, cuffs, little boxes, and other odds and ends. If you're in need of a gift, the chances of you finding one in Steeling Home are high. And if you're like me, I invite you to partake in my new rule. I have been to Steeling Home a couple of times to pick up some Christmas gifts in the last month. I love all the cool stuff they carry...but I don't care for the sales staff. They were rude to me, unhelpful and didn't bother to smile or say thank you when I handed over my money. I'm a pretty happy, smiley person. I find it sad and frustrating that there are people working in the retail/service industry that can't be bothered to at least be somewhat pleasant!? There are tons of other funky little gift shops in the city that will happily take my hard earned cash with a smile. Edit: I noticed that there was another review for Steeling Home that was filtered out. The writer mentioned that the staff ignored her and started vacuuming 20 minutes before the store closed. This also happened to me while I was shopping there. It was at least a half hour before closing. She was kind enough to sigh loudly when I stepped passed her vacuum on the way out. Nice. read more

This is my "go-to" store for gifts -- Christmas, birthdays, any occasion -- I make a beeline here for the most obscure, unique, and amazing gift items (and I almost always acquire something for myself while I'm there). They seem to stay ahead of everyone else with regards to "what's hot", and you see things there that you just don't see anywhere else (especially at the big chain kitrchen/gift/book stores). They also focus on cool locally-focused items, artisan jewelry, out-of-the-ordinary import stuff, and a collection of gift books which are so offbeat; so off-the-wall; that I sometimes stand there and weep with laughter. I saw an old-timey metal sign depicting a Beach Blanket Bingo setting from the good life of 1950's summertime that would be perfect as a gift for my parents cabin (hopefully they don't read this review!). Steeling Home is a great store for finding funny, eclectic, and genuinely beautiful pieces for your home or as gifts for friends and family. I was so excited to see this new store opening up in my neighbourhood, and was quick to visit when it first opened. One thing I immediately noticed that I wasn't excited about was the total disinterest of all the staff. I was not greeted or asked if I needed any help, the three girls that were working were simply lounging behind the counter, texting, and looking rather bored. I didn't try to engage them during this visit. I simply toured about the store, enjoying the layout of each "niche". There are so many unique items here that you won't find anywhere else! I found plenty of great accessories for my home, and enjoyed a lot of the jewellery as well. I also love that they carry Rifle Paper Co. products. I recently went back to make a gift purchase for my dad's birthday. Again, nobody greeted me. Nobody asked if I needed help. The girl taking my items for purchase gave me a bit of a "Look" when I asked if she could remove the price stickers for me. After getting a coworker to help her do that (!!!!) she quickly shoved my items into a bag and didn't say goodbye or anything. I really hope Steeling Home hires new staff. Such a unique store deserves staff who are enthusiastic about their products and customers. The service may be bad, and some of the prices are a bit extreme, but overall I do enjoy the shop and will continue to visit. read more

I have shopped at Steeling Home off and on for several years and am glad they are in a larger space. The shop is still over-merchandised and the amount of product can be a bit overwhelming. Overall the selection is good and I usually find myself there when hunting for a quirky gift, silly books, fake moustaches or a simple home decorating treasure. I stopped by the shop this week looking for a wedding gift. I thought that SH would be a sure bet to find something nice for the home of young newlyweds. When entering I noticed the girl at the counter was staring straight at me so I smiled. Oh wait, she was just glazed over with boredom and didn't notice me let alone greet me at all. After about 15 minutes of sifting through the house wares trying to find something I was feeling a bit lost. I was ready to ask for some guidance but felt put off by zombie girl at the counter. By the time I made a lap of the store (still no greeting or offer of assistance) the girl had dragged out the vacuum and started noisily vacuuming the front carpet. It was about 20 minutes until close. I walked out empty-handed and disappointed. I get that staff want to close and go home as quickly as possible. It may have been a long day or boring or whatever. But when you are being paid to be there and you're not doing your job, why even bother? Retail rule: never vacuum while there are customers in the store. Am I wrong? In the past I've had a friendly hello or check-out experience. I will probably be back in the future, but I'll lower my expectation for helpful service. read more

We were browsing 17th and came across this store. What a great place to find a unique house-warming gift! They have a large variety of knick-knacks, welcome mats, coat hook hardware, bar ware, aprons and BBQ items, Blue Q, etc etc. The store is packed full of all kinds of things. The most unique thing I saw was the "Ecosystem in a glass". They are tiny shrimp with some algae, water and decorations that is self-sustaining for a number of years. We will most likely be going back next time we are visiting Calgary to pick up some of the coat-hooks and hardware. I have never seen anything like it. read more

Those fabulous little boutiques that have the coolest gifts, the chicest finds, the most adorable kids "krap" (for those of us who don't have kids to give to those who do!), custom jewelry, and ultra unique finds... well, Steeling Home has it all! I love this store! BUT the customer service today made me not wana come back. It wasn't anything horrible but still. The girl wouldn't smile or didn't say hi and just seemed miserable. Then I asked how much a handmade scarf was and the girl grabbed the scarf very rough and pulled it off the rack (could of wrecked it) and then went to look it up on the computer in a way like we were ruining her alone time. Another lady came and the grumpy one went to the back so I told this lady how she wasn't very good with her customer service. The lady then gave a ton of excuses for her....yet another form of bad customer service. If I tell you I bad a bad experience in your establishment, you apologize right away, not give me excuses. She said she had to move quickly and that was why she wasn't in a good mood. Then when she came back the lady I complained to proceeded to tell the grumpy one what I had said, in a quiet voice but I still heard. Yet another form of bad customer service. I work in customer service and if I'm having a bad day I still need to smile and be nice to people. We all have stressors that affect us but if you choose a job in customer service you need to be able to get past these things while working. Nice funky store but not a great experience today. Steeling Home is a cool store with a lot of cool stuff but, while I like to browse, it's rare that I buy. I love books but one thing I noticed is this store sells books at higher than the publishers recommended retail price. Look closely, they put price stickers over the retail price printed right on the book that is higher (sometimes a lot higher). If you find a book you like, write down the title and author and go to Chapters or purchase off Amazon. I'm usually a big, shop local and independent person but not in this case. I also find the sales staff a bit, well, less than helpful. The last few times I was in they were very busy having a conversation amongst themselves while ignoring everyone who came in. I guess I can't complain though, I'm just browsing. read more

What a beautiful little homey store on 17th. I seriously would love to decorate my home with this entire store. It's so beautiful and the pieces are adorable and eclectic. I wandered in this store for for 20 minutes and I already had a large list of things I wanted to purchase. This is definitely the place to go if you want to add a special touch to your home - to warm it up. I love this place and I feel that 20 minutes wasn't nearly enough time to fully see what Steeling had to offer.
