Gave these guys one more chance (since it's extremely convenient to my location and I prefer to support local businesses) and they managed to fail yet again. Bad experience every single time. My latest experience: Called when they opened and asked whether or not my snowboard tune-up was done (I waited 2 weeks). Employee stated they were "too busy with customers" and couldn't check for me and that they would call me back. Waited TWO HOURS. No call. Called back. Employee: "Yeah....um....sorry...I haven't even been able to look yet." SERIOUSLY? How bad can your customer service get? But wait! There's more! When I picked up my board, they tried to overcharge me by 10 bucks. Was quoted a price of $39.99 and they rang me up at $49.99. What you can fully expect from Steiner's: Outrageously high prices Nothing's in stock Extremely limited selection Horrendous customer service I will travel the 30-40 minutes to go somewhere else from now on. I'm a new customer to Steiner's Valatie and they are awesome. I wanted a new road bike and called bike shops from NY, VT, MA, CT, PA, looking for a ride. My expectations were low and everyone had no inventory. Somehow, Garrick came up with the Trek I wanted. I'm repeating this review here, because although my initial purchase took place at Hudson Store, they told me that someone at this store had committed the error: Complete incompetence and dishonesty. I ordered a Trek bicycle 6-7 weeks ahead for a vacation I was going on. I should have backed out right from the beginning after a bizarre 3 charges were put through on my card for the bike before credit card locked Steiner out. I followed up with Steiner about 3 weeks before to make sure everything was on schedule for delivery. Yes. 1 week before, yes. day before: Yes, bike is on route and we will build and call you. I don't hear back, so I call 2 days later. And I speak to the owner who tells me: the bike was sent to our other store (I was initially told it was being shipped to Hudson store, where I purchased, so not sure how it ended up at another store ) and one of our employees built the bike and sold it. Now this is during covid where not a single store has a bike to sell (as I was told by the owner), but somehow one of the employees built a bike and decided it was there ready to be sold, when they haven't had a bike for sale in months. When I asked the owner if she was planning on doing good on my purchase, she said: I wish we could but we literally do not have a bike to sell. Then how on earth did one of your employees think there was an unaccounted for bike to sell? She quickly agreed to reimburse my money. That was the best they could do. I was left to go on vacation 2 days later without my bicycle that I had so looked forward to having. I can only speculate what happened to my bicycle, but the excuse was so all over the place I can only imagine it was sold for alot more money to someone else, or an employee decided they or a friend could use a bike just about now. Never again will I take my bikes there! Dropped a bike off in December. We were promised to get the bike back a week later. It wasn't done on time. Came back a week later and not done! Went back a couple months later and went to pick the bike up and the tires were flat I was told because it was there so long that's why they were flat. I brought it in for a new tube and a tune up. I was told $50. When I got there after all this it was $96! The best part .. the poor customer service! When I called to check on the bike they didn't want to go look to see if it was ready. I was told I'm sure it's done. When I said go look I got attitude. I will never go back! We just bought a brand new $600 bike at The Bike barn in Cohoes! They were wonderful. read more

Steiner's is the best! They just saved my daughter's night at snowboard club. I had a mom fail moment where I forgot to pick up a snowboarding leash for my daughter's lesson. On our way to the mountain I stopped into Steiner's Sports. Although they did not sell a leash they had a few used ones downstairs. The employee quickly offered one up to me and didn't even charge me for it. Thanks Steiner's Sports for saving my night! Great service! read more

This is a small town and it's hard not to already know everyone. I do know the owner from community activities. However, I purchased my Trek from Steiner's before I knew anyone. Everyone I encountered at Steiner's was positive, polite and professional. I tried out the wrong bike first and blew out both tires. I was mortified. The staff put me at ease and no one laughed. How they managed not to laugh is beyond me! The staff helped me find just the right bike, put it together properly and tweaked a bit just for me. They provided annual servicing, checked it out for free when I thought I messed up the gears, made it's one repair. When servicing the bike they didn't tried to sell me anything other than what was necessary. I recommended them to my husband and sister who later bought their bikes and subsequent service from Steiner's. No complaints. Now I'm in the market for another type of bike and gave the Trek to my daughter. I won't bother shopping anywhere else. The store owner is a respected Rotarian. In business and personal life, Rotary Club members strive to be honest, fair-minded and promoters of goodwill and better friendships. My experience with Steiner's reflected these values. read more

(I have gone to the Hudson store my whole life! - definitely better than Valatie) I moved to the Valatie area in April 2014 and it was convenient to go to Hudson anymore, in addition to the fact that Valatie is the store that caries snowboards. So I go in and ordering my snowboard was was a pleasant expierience because they said they probably couldn't get the particular snowboard I wanted, and they did! - The bindings however, very different story.... I come in to pick up my snowboard and the bindings I wanted are on back order... So I waited. 2 more weeks and they are still on this "back order", and I wait another 2 weeks and they offer me re same bindings just the other color potion and I said no and waited another 2 weeks, they "came in", but we're the bindings they offered me last week, WHICH WAS NOT WHAT I ORDERED! I'm a very passive person but I'm not spending 300$ on something I hate. It was written on the receipt the exact bindings I wanted and that same day an employee was very rude. I assumed he was waiting with another customer for me to get my binding put on and I went out and said "if he is waiting he can go, he can go im not getting my bindings mounted today", this employee gave me a dirty look and went back to talking.. Very unpleasant. So I ordered new bindings and we'll see if they get it right this time. Some people at the store are very pleasant and will work with you! I guess I just got a bad guy. I've gone to Steiner's in Valatie for 20+ years. For a total of about 40 visits. In that time, across ALL visits, covering everything from purchasing high price point items ($4,000 bike) to buying needed inner tubes, I have found them to be VERY knowledgeable, attentive and helpful. They are always accommodating (changing a flat tire to gifting an inner tube because I was nearby and out of cash) is but one example. read more

rude experience I have purchased high end bikes, kayaks, and ski equipment and more in the last five years even when prices were less elsewhere so I thought I was a pretty good customer w an excellent relationship w the store. Apparently not. I had called ahead to find out about ski leases for my children and whether equipment from prior years might be purchased. I was told yes. Bring in the equipment and if it is in good shape we will credit it towards the leases. So I load up the car and get the kids and wait around for 30 minutes in the store. Finally I get some help and am told a different story. The store will only credit new purchases. So I ask to speak to the manager. I explain what I was told. He smiles and I figure we will work something out or he will apologize for the misunderstanding. Instead he says to me to bring the equipment in and he'll look at it and then tell me he doesn't want it. I thought he was kidding at first so shocked i was by how unabashedly rude he was but he wasn't. He just smiled and continued doing what he was doing. It was by far the worst treatment I have ever had in retail. It was very disrespectful. I never expected that. The next day I found another store that accepted the trade in, got excellent service and was very happy. My whole reason for ever going there was ruined. I went because of the service and trust. ( price points are high). Just thought others should know, I still can't believe the manager - he identified himself as an owner would treat a customer in front of his family that way. I have already told others about it and encourage family and friends to stay away, they all think the stores behavior was disgusting. read more

These guys used to be good, but not anymore. I got my specialized mt bike tuned up last fall and they did a horrible job. The gears skip, and they tried to replace my back tire with a smaller size tire, just one mind you, so the tires were mismatched. Of course I demanded a matched set since it looked and rode horrible, but who tries to get away with that? Really sloppy. On top of that, the service took four weeks to complete -- far longer than the week they quoted. But decided to give them one last chance since theyre local. Brought in my sons GT for a replacement gear shift and the same sloppy work, skipped gearing and finally the shifter itself just stopped working. Bad news. Next time I'm making the trek to Mad Dog or Downtube. read more

the service here is awful. They tried to sell me a new bike rather than fix my bike. They charge a lot for parts and labor and kept my bike a long time. It did not perform much better once I had it back. I had good experience having my bike fixed/tuned at Catskill Cycles and at CK cycles on central. read more
