They are an old-school, fully stocked "outdoor" store that harkens back to an era of local stores that seem to disappear, victims of REI's and Big Boxes, where staff are likely to be completely clueless about what they are selling. I stopped in for some gels and air canisters for my bike bag, and bent the ear of one of the bike shop employees who was more than happy to talk bikes. The store is a fly fisher's dream ( or money trap because of how much stuff they have!) - they are fully stocked with Skis ( even in summer!) - Bikes, Kayak/Canoe gear, hiking gear, camping gear - and topped with a knowledgeable staff. The BEST! They picked me up at Father Tom's campground. They had everything I needed to get back on the wet mucky Appalachian Trail. The prices were great! New Salomons, new hiking shirt, stuff sack, darn tough socks and electrolyte tabs. All this for less than $250 I'm very happy!!! Then....a ride back to campground! read more

Rented some 4 bikes from here this past weekend. An overall great experience! If you're looking to bike the Ashuwillticook trail, their store is right across the street from them. Their website is a bit confusing, but I sent them an email and they responded within a few hours. Website said that we needed to bring our own pedals if we didn't want to use the clip in pedals, but that wasn't the case which was good. On the day that we were trying to rent the bikes, the website was randomly down. I called them and they were super helpful. Took down my name and set aside 4 hybrids for us. We were running late and I called to tell them that and the man who picked up the phone was a bit short with me on the phone. We finally got there an hour late. They happened to have put the bikes away since they assumed we weren't coming. But the guy there was super helpful and quickly got the bikes out and got us going within 10min. He was especially quick because he knew we were trying to catch sunset and were only going to be out for an hour and a half before it got too dark to ride. He even cut the price down from 30 to 25$ since we were going to be out for such a little time. We set off and within 5 min I had a flat. I called him and asked if I could get another bike if I rode back. He said to just wait there and he would come meet me. He rode a replacement bike out himself and met me within 5min. It was so helpful! We were able to return the bikes after the shop closed which was great too. Bikes were great to ride and helmets were good too. Sure the website could use some work (or be functional), and maybe some of the people there don't have the greatest customer service, but the person we worked with was absolutely fantastic and it was honestly the best experience I've had at a rental place in forever. read more

The best kayak rental in Georgetown. You will see the line and think that it will take forever, but it speeds right along. They give you an iPad to fill out waivers etc and you come back to the front right when you are finished. I've been on a crowded day where at first I thought that they were too busy, but there were plenty of kayaks and SUPs available. The equipment is always of good repair and the water in which you can explore is beautiful. It's normally not too busy, but kayaks should stay to the side anyway so run it's with boats are rare. Going right when you leave the dock (north) is the most scenic. You can get pretty close to where you think there is rapids. If you go south, you get beautiful views of Georgetown and the National Mall. Watch out for fast boats though! read more

I am thru hiking the Appalachian Trail and had a gear emergency on the trail. I called Berkshire Outfitters and left a message on the machine since they were closed. Steve called me back, picked me up from the trail, and solved my gear emergency (I was hiking in flip flops, my shoes had a blowout and I had no other options). He also fixed my trekking poles. I can not say enough great things about Steve and his shop. He did all of this on his day off. read more

I was in the market for maps of hiking trails; I'm also looking for a new fly rod and my cross country ski boots need to be replaced. I like to shop at local, independent stores whenever possible. Maybe Berkshires Outfitters carry such items but I won't know because they were having a bad day and decided not to go to work today. So much for customer service. read more

Very friendly, knowledgeable staff. Super accomodating. Visiting the Berkshires for a mountain bike weekend and had a problem with one of our bikes. Although super swamped with work, Josh took time out of his busy day and immediately diagnosed, tested and repaired our bike so that we were able to continue with our vacation plans within an hour. I was surprised at how disappointing our experience was with these guys. I made a reservation for 5 boats at least a week in advance. The fellow on the phone seemed perfectly nice. Two days before our outing, I changed the reservation to 4 canoes and 1 double kayak; the day before, I changed it to 5 canoes. When we got there, the guy at the counter confirmed with me that we wanted 5 canoes. He then began speaking to me, without provocation in a very surly manner. They wanted to charge us $5 for an extra life jacket for the 3rd occupant of each canoe! This 3rd occupant was ALWAYS a child in each canoe. The guy said, and this is a near quote, "Well, you can pay $5 for the life jacket or the state can fine you $35, I don't care." When you are giving an establishment $330 worth of business in a single transaction, I feel that you don't deserve this kind of treatment. I seem to remember at the end of our conversation that the guy waived the charge, but I have never heard of a canoe place that does not provide life jackets free of charge for every occupant of the boat. That policy seems criminal to me. What if someone can't or won't pay and they drown? Is Berkshire Outfitters ready to accept responsibility? Also I asked them for dry bags and cushions for the 3rd occupant as the canoes had only 2 seats. They said they had none! Again, this is something that every canoe rental place I have ever been to has provided free of charge. While this is more acceptable than not providing free life jackets, it is still not good service. To cap it all off, when we got to Cheshire Reservoir, the trailer had only 4 canoes and 1 kayak, despite the fact that I had changed the reservation to 5 canoes the day before. The guy driving the truck claimed that I was wrong and the reservation was for 4 canoes and kayak. I told him that the guy at the shop confirmed with me that we were getting 5 canoes and that if he asked the guy that he would confirm it. The truck driver guy demurred in a surly manner. The canoes and kayak were old and faded, clearly heavily used. On our way back I informed them that we might be late, the guy at the shop said that would be OK, although he had consistently pushed for us to be at the pullout spot at 3 pm because even though they were open until 4, he said that "on Sunday, the guys wanna go home." We booked it across Cheshire Reservoir and made it in time to the pullout. When we got there, a different guy was there to pick us up and he was very apologetic about the canoes mixup. I appreciated that and told him so, but I still would not do business with this place again. I recommend against giving them your business, although they seem to be the only option in their area. If you are willing to go farther, rent from Barton Cove Canoe Rentals in Gill, we had an excellent experience with them two years ago. read more

We had installed a bike rack on our truck that wasn't really made for it and ran into some "breakage" when on our way to a nearby trail. We happened to be a mile away from this store and drove there seeking help on a Sunday. These guys were seriously amazing - everyone came out to assess the bike problem and then showed real concern and care. They gave great advice about bike racks, tried to help us find a back rack or a fix to the problem and didn't just try to make a sale off of us. Added plus, the dogs are so friendly and are happy to run freely (so pull into the lot carefully as they run up to cars). If I ever needed anything and I lived in that area, this would be my go-to spot. Very knowledgeable, helpful and caring staff. 5+ stars read more
