It had been years since my last visit. We found a great variety of gardening products for our bird-feeding project. My favorite: the Gord-O bird house. Absolutely ridiculous how expensive their artificial trees are, even at half price. I can go to Walmart & buy a tree for a tenth of the cost & they look just as nice. Steins used to be a good store until Mr. Maurice Stein left the business. I had worked with someone who worked at Stein's back then & she said the same thing, that it's not the same anymore & that it used to be a good store. That's what happens when you farm out the business. Now the store is just overpriced stuff. You can go to Walmart & buy the same stuff for so much less. Shame on you! Other reviewers are correct. Staff is not helpful here & there is no customer service. Also true is that they do not honor their guarantee. I tried to get credit on a burning bush that withered away & was told it was my fault. Really, then what is the guarantee worth? I don't think I purposely killed it to get a store credit. I went to Lowe's & bought a burning bush for half the price & it is still thriving to this day. read more

Stein's is a little all over the place for me - you can buy plants, spangly scarves, fertilizer, flavored coffee, rakes, scented candles, garden gnomes and slippers here. Yep - saw all of those things on a recent visit. On the plus side, they really do have everything. In summer, they have acres of plants, shrubs and trees. They have mulch, stone and pavers. They have décor for your patio, fountains and birdbaths. In winter, any and all tacky Christmas decorations are available, plus aisles of ornaments and a forest of fake trees, plus real ones outside. At all times of the year, there is a huge selection of home décor. On the minus side, their plants - specifically annuals and perennials (no guarantee on these) - are not especially well cared for. If you get them right when they're put out, they are fine. Otherwise they'll likely be dried out and rootbound. Prices here are also no bargain - they advertised "50% off" on artificial Christmas trees. Ummm right, 50% off of an inflated list price that no one actually has ever paid - basically the prices for the discounted trees were the same or more than comparables at Home Depot. Same with plants - I find them to be on the higher end of the price scale. Staff - usually ignores us totally. Bottom line - Stein's is middling quality for a premium price. If you're willing to pay a higher price for quality plants, head to Minor's or Mileagers. If you want to save money, hit up Home Depot. read more

They always have the best plants here. Everything is healthy and there's a HUGE variety - I always see something new every time I stop by. The staff is friendly and helpful. My garden space looks so much better after I make a trip here. I also can't help but look through the home decor section, they have such neat and unique things! read more

When they say, all plants are guaranteed and are refundable - that's not true. Don't believe them. Only certain plants are refundable. I spent over $2000 on landscaping with them this year and ONE $16 hanging basket died a horrible death and they would not refund it! Seriously? Very sad. This company is lost This company has grown too big too fast and has lost focus on what got them to where they are in the first place. Good quality. Great pricing and great service. Pick none. If they can't stand behind a $2000 customer for a $16 hanging basket, they stand for nothing. I will take my business elsewhere next year. read more

Don't ever buy a live Christmas tree from steins...ours was spray painted and within a week I was vacuuming two to three times a day because of all the needles that were falling off....we only had the tree for two weeks and after taking the lights off there are no needles left in the tree...don't waste your money on their real Christmas trees read more

These folks went above and beyond! Below is a brief version of my experience with this Stein's location. My daughter really really wanted a "light up girl" garden gnome statute as a Christmas gift from Santa. I don't have a clue where she heard of such a thing, but alas I was determined to find one (as it was her only request from Santa). After much internet searching, I was thrilled to find a limited stock at this Stein's location! Keep in mind, I live in CA and this store is in WI. (Obviously, I had a REALLY hard time finding lady garden gnomes that had a light feature...) After arranging a friend of a friend of a friend (thanks Facebook!) to pick up the statute in the store after I paid for it over the phone, the statute arrived via FedEx just in time. My five year old opened it up on Christmas and was over the moon- until we tried to use the light up feature and it didn't work. It was also then that I noticed the statute appeared to be damaged/fixed. I made up something about how it must have gotten damaged in the sleigh. A few days later, I called Stein's and spoke with Allison. She was kind and very understanding of my frustration with the delivered item. She arranged to have another statute sent from a different Stein's location, thoroughly tested it herself, and is sending it to me free of charge! I am very grateful for their dedication to remedying the situation and providing excellent customer service. read more

This being the beginning of our second year in our new house, I turned my attention from fixing the insides to fixing the outsides... And discovered Stein's. The store's name can be a little misleading--or at least, that's what I tell myself for my reason for staying away for so long. I expected more of the gift stuff, and certainly not the huge array of plant choices. And, as with most reputable nurseries, they include a decent warranty on the bigger plants you buy from them. Of course, now I've spent way too much money on everything from roses to raspberry bushes to herbs and vegetables, but this store in particular has a shocking array of plants to choose from. And instead of hiring an overpriced landscape architect, I just spoke with one of the store's staffers, who recommended some beautiful perennials I hadn't even known existed. She turned me on to Heucheras and Sedums, but they also had the Azaleas, honeysuckle, and hollyhocks I was particularly looking for. As for those gift items I was so leery of: I'm going to have to start saving my pennies for one of those fountains or windchimes--they're not cheesey at all! Because I get down to Racine pretty regularly too, I've been to both Stein's and Milaeger's there, and have to say, Stein's prices really can't be beat, either. read more

My husband bought a live Christmas tree about a week ago. After 5 day's, after we decorated it, needles were falling off it. We watered tree, cut trunk, kept it in a cool area, away from heat and this morning it's going in the trash. Not sure how fresh the tree's are at Stein's, but we got a very dried up tree, which was sprayed with some green stuff, probably because it was old to begin with. We wasted our time and effort and money and now we have to either buy a new tree, or not have one. I would not recommend getting a live tree at Stein's. So be careful if you do. Go elsewhere. Never had a tree so dry like this and we've had many live tree's before. read more

Cant believe the customer service in here!! Called today about a product check, I was across the street at the Chase Bank Atm. Kayla put me on hold to check my item. After 10 minutes of waiting I just drove across the street to check myself. I walked into Steins and Kayla, a tall thin red head with glasses was RESTING behind the desk WITH NOT A SOUL IN THE STORE. I asked her where the product was, she pointed 75 ft away to the door with the plants. I walked over looked in, they didnt have my item. As I walked out of Steins for the LAST time I asked the girl, " hey, whats your name?" She answered "Kayla" "isnt there a girl on the phone looking for dirt?" I asked Kayla answered "ya" I just looked at her, held up my phone and said "ya that was me, I am the girl on the phone. This place has not a soul in it and you have kept me on hold for over 13 minutes waiting? I actually drove over here from across the St, is that acceptable to you?" She just looked at me. I then said "you couldn't walk 75ft to chk for my item yourself????????" "you didnt make sure the call got picked up or if someone came up front to take it?" and then she didnt even have the brain to say ANYTHING to me. Just a blank, squinted stare?? Funny cause she could of just looked it up on the computer right in front of her if taking 30 steps was to troubling. I called back to talk to manager, she answered again and guess what, I was on hold AGAIN for 8 min??? I hung up I called the manager at the Wauwatosa store to complain. He told me they get complaints all the time about the capital drive store. Get a clue, who is running this place and training people? how many more customers will you loose with that service? I mean why pay more for Walmart service. read more

Not very good service, no one greets you, even when you walk yup to the register, they just scan your stuff and tell you the piece. Great place for introverts. More of a home decor place than a garden supply store, selection for actual garden supplies is poor, plant selection is decent. read more

Today I tried to return a pot that I bought a month ago. I couldn't find the receipt so I thought I would return it for a store credit. But no, there are no returns without a receipt. The woman at the service counter was rude to me which bothered me more than the fact that I Couldn't return the pot. Being an avid gardener and living close to this store, I've shopped here a lot over the last 30 years. But not any more. read more

I can't believe I haven't thought to review Stein's yet! It's one of my favorite Milwaukee chains, although I just looked it up and there are apparently 14 in the Milwaukee, Racine/Kenosha and Fox Valley areas. Ever since I bought a house Stein's has been my main source for plants and garden supplies. There is always a helpful staff person available and they really do have a great selection of nice plants. read more

Average Steins. Plants of every variety. Tons of staff running around everywhere that can attempt to help but aren't really all that knowledgeable about gardening. Stein's plants seem to have gone down hill this year. Many of their flowers are dead/dying. However, they did have a good selection of healthy vegetable plants - therefore, the 3 stars. read more

Today, May 24th, I ventured out of my house during a pandemic to get some gardening supplies. I went out of my way to go to Stein's because they always have what I need. Their website told me that they were ready to open during the pandemic. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I am a senior citizen with some health concerns so I wore a mask and kept apart from other shoppers. However, as an older adult, I am subject to periodic urgency. I was not allowed to use either of two public washrooms so was forced to leave immediately. This store is in the middle of nowhere and I was 10 miles from home. Fast food places are open for drive-up only. I thought that I could make it once I realized that my only option was a gas station. I didn't make it. Now I ask you, IF it is UNSAFE to use the washroom, how is it SAFE to open the store? The website does not indicate that their bathrooms are closed. Obviously they opened just for the money. Does Stein's know who gardens? Well, older adults garden and families with children garden. This is one gardener who will never shop at Stein's again. read more

We came here a few weeks to select flowers for our patio planter boxes and almost everything looked like it was dying. We left and decided to purchase elsewhere, such a shame as it's very close to our house and we had a expectations. read more
