I purchased a used upright from Christine's Piano for a significant sum of money. It came with a…read moreten-year warranty and one free tuning. The first time I had the piano tuned by my own tuner, he told me that the piano had serious structural damage that was "extremely unusual for a high quality piano" and would prevent it from being kept in tune. The structural damage includes numerous sound board cracks, rib separation, and a splintered and cracked bass bridge. He also noted mouse urine staining inside the piano, showing it had been improperly stored and maintained in the past. Given the extensive damage, the piano is clearly not worth anywhere close to the amount of money that I paid for it. I contacted Christine and asked to return it for a refund. She refused, and claimed the warranty doesn't cover any of the damage. She offered to exchange the piano for another piano of the same make and model--if I paid her another $5,000, because the other piano was in "better condition." I do not recommend that anyone shop from this business. At the very least, do yourself a favor and have any piano from this business thoroughly inspected by your own independent piano technician before you make an offer.

On a whim, minutes before I left, I thought I'd try the next closest Yamaha dealer, which happened to be Downtown Piano Works. I typed a chat message into their website, expecting a canned AI answer. Instead, Dan, the owner, responded right away. He told me to call him on his cell phone, and without hearing the other store's "lowest" price, he quoted a price that was $1500 less. There was no haggling, no wondering if I was getting a worse deal than everyone else on the internet. We drove with the kids an hour to Frederick just to make sure this wasn't too good to be true, and it wasn't. Dan and Theresa opened their store on a Saturday night, three hours after I'd first messaged their website. By the time we left, we were the owners of a new Yamaha U1. WARNING: do not rent from this company. I am not sure what happened, but it is a become a fraudulent business. Luckily, I only paid the $20 reservation fee to reserve a piano rental, but the piano was not delivered as promised. Just days prior to the delivery date, Cameron emailed me to confirm the delivery. After the delivery date and time passed with no delivery I called and emailed Cameron several times with no response and no refund. I drove to his business address as shown on Yelp and the shop is no longer at that address. Also, the address on the website is a post office box. Be very careful if you still want to try and rent from this company.
