Realms is awesome!! My dad recently passed and my siblings came to visit for thanksgiving weekend, so at the last minute I was looking for an artist to do memorial tattoos for us. Realms was able to fit us in by staying after the normal closing time. She was super easy to communicate with prior to the appointment and sent designs ahead of time. We all absolutely love the tattoo we got from her! She was even able to add my dad's ashes to the ink for my brother's tattoo which was super special to him. Her shop is really unlike any other shop I've ever seen. It is clean, inviting, and has such good energy. An awesome experience working with someone like Nickhole throughout the whole tattoo experience. From the planning to the drawing to the appt scheduling she's always been open about what to expect and what I'm hoping to get from this experience. I'm normally intimidated by tattoo artists and just hope for the best but Nickhole makes your opinion feel valued. Just a personal preference, but I enjoy the shorter tattoo sessions since I can only handle pain for so long. I would rather have multiple shorter sessions than fewer and longer sessions. All I can say is amazing. I was looking to get this tattoo on my foot from about a year and a half ago covered up because I had spent so much much money on it and it turned out horrible. I emailed Nickhole and asked her some questions which she was perfectly able to answer, made the appointment with her and waited two months for my appointment. I sent her the ideas I had and when I got to my appointment, she had it out for me along with new ideas I wouldn't have thought of. The COVID-19 procedures were very good, temp-checked, wiped down everything that was touched, washed her hands multiple times. For my tattoo, I had to wear a gown (which was kinda bad-ass). During the tattoo, she explained how she was doing things, any ideas she had in mind which all made me feel very comfortable especially with the experience I had previously had. Her work is amazing and she has an absolute talent for nature work and I can't wait to go back to her and add more pieces from her! The amount of care and professionalism that goes into Nickhole's work is unprecedented. I have multiple large pieces from various tattoo artists of varying skill levels. All, in the past, have left me with a few spots resulting in gnarly chunky scabs here and there during the healing process. Since that was my experience every time, I assumed it was normal. It wasn't until I began coming to Waterproof Black that I realized that I had been getting tattooed by scab lords that didn't care about the trauma they were inflicting on my skin. They just wanted to hammer through a session, take the cash and could care less about the outcome. Where do I even start on how much I absolutely adore this place?? This might be long. I have gotten 5 tattoos there so far and they are some of the coolest things I have on my body. The care that they take to make sure everything is thoroughly cleaned is amazing. I have gone in for three session to date, and each time I'm absolutely stunned and pleased with the unmatched level of professionality and service I'm met with. In addition to that, her care and attunement with the world is inspiring. I always leave the shop wanting to give back--because I can feel how deeply she gives from the heart and soul. She is the first tattoo artist to offer numbing applications before the session--which has been a real game-changer for me! When you walk in, you can see how clean and welcoming the studio is. There's an abundance of plants which always makes me happy to see! Nickhole is very careful maintaining COVID protocols and cleanliness. It is apparent that she takes her works very seriously--this reflects in the environment in which she does her craft. Her artwork is wonderfully unique and creative--be sure to check out the B&W Lego portraits! One thing I love is that she works collaboratively and fluidly with her clients and what they're looking for. There's usually an apprentice sitting and watching (after checking that I'm comfortable with that) and Nickhole uses many moments during the session to teach them about techniques or unique issues that may happen with a client's skin. Aside from that, there's always good conversation and lots of positivity during our sessions. The time really does go by quickly. I have never felt as comfortable in a tattoo shop than I do at Waterproof Black Tattoo. That's probably because it is more than a tattoo shop, it's an art temple. I have allergies and they are always accommodating - in fact, I never have to remind them that I need a different type of ointment than most people. They are trauma informed and they give back to the community. Snacks and tea are always here for when I need a little pick me up in the middle of a session. Every piece I receive by Nickhole is my new favorite piece, each so special and loved.
