My son is now in college and has just asked me to sign him up for some sessions to help him with his Calculus classes. Stepping Stones is an amazing place to go to have tutoring. Unlike many other tutoring places, the multitude of tutors do not simply do your work for you; they explain and make sure that there is actual learning going on. Stepping stones helps students of all ages, as I have gone there in elementary school, and now go even in my junior year of high school. Their wide variety of staff specialties allows the extremely positive environment continue to be a place of helpful assistance in even the most difficult subjects, in my case AP chemistry and honors math analysis. Our 5 year old son was having confidence issues when it came to letters because he wasn't able to remember the letter and the sound it made. We brought him to Stepping Stones in hopes that he would gain the skills necessary to thrive with letters and build confidence. Miss Lily has been AMAZING! My son loves her and has so much fun, every day he asks, "Do we get to see Miss Lily yet?" She has helped him tremendously, he has gone from fear of letters to pointing out a letter and saying, for example, "That is the letter P, it sounds like this, ppppp" all within a matter of a few weeks! Our son just completed the HS admissions process and with the incredible guidance and tutoring from Stepping Stones he was accepted to all of his top choices. What Carole and team do is very much more than just tutoring or test prep. They took the time to really get to know our son and to customize/tailor a plan just for him. With our new way of online learning, our son and daughter, who are both in high school, are being challenged. We usually use Stepping Stones for on-site learning, but thought we would give the virtual tutoring a try. Our son, who is having a very hard time in Chemistry, had a virtual tutoring lesson, and the tutor was FANTASTIC!!! We booked another lesson for 2 hours and 3 one-hour sessions for another three days in a row. AMAZING! And, both our daughter and son have been working virtually with an amazing tutor who helps them in english. My daughter has been going to Stepping Stones for almost two years. We have tried other tutors and until Stepping Stones, have not been able to find someone completely fluent in middle/high school math and science. Unlike with other tutors she has had, my daughter looks forward to meeting with her Stepping Stones tutor, Brad. He has been a huge help with explaining difficult concepts and organizing her study material. The owner and staff are highly accommodating when extra sessions are needed and when a schedule change is necessary. They are very warm and friendly to the students and my daughter feels extremely comfortable there. I also appreciate the convenient location. Stepping Stones is close to many of the schools so an older student can easily walk or bike. In addition to tutoring, Stepping Stones offers college test prep which I plan to utilize when the time comes. read more

Best tutoring hidden gem in San Marino!!! My daughter's grades and confidence in math and science have improved so much that she now qualifies for honors level classes! Miles, her tutor, is amazing. He is patient, engaging, and really knows how to explain so she understands and applies her knowledge in class. Helpful hint....they have a program in the summer so you can get a head start on a difficult subject before they take it in the fall and I can say from experience that their program works! My son is currently attending Stepping Stones as he needs help organizing his homework and completing work to the best of his ability. We initially tried 'Study Hall' but found that my son would do better on a one-to-one basis. One of the things that makes Stepping Stones unique is the ownership and management who are interested in finding a solution to your child's needs rather than just selling tutoring. Mrs. Hasbun is a beloved teacher from the San Marino School district and has years of knowledge that she brings to this learning facility. My son has also enjoyed lego camps over the years! I have been impressed with the staff and management at Stepping Stones. They have been very responsive to questions about my child's progress and their tutors I have come into contact with appear to be top notch. Their sessions for my child are individualized to work on the areas he needs help with and their approach is personalized to him. This isn't a cookie cutter place. I was expecting him to dislike his sessions there but he looks forward to them because his time there is engaging and fun while still making progress in his development goals. read more

Our experience here was kind of - meh. And that's 2 stars in Yelp terms, but they probably deserve 2.5. The offices are nice, the people are nice and it's an efficient organization. So no points off there. My 10 year old daughter went to Stepping Stones for test prep last year - we had her go for 3-4 months before taking a standardized exam as she had very little experience with standardized tests. Seems like the kind of thing they should handle pretty well. But oddly, the tutoring didn't seem to help my daughter all that much and, what was worse, the tutor didn't have anything to say to me about how she was doing or what else we could do to help her. If I'm paying for 4 months of test prep and a student isn't progressing, I would expect some kind of feedback: "your kid is just dumb", "your kid is lazy", "your kid hates me". Okay, so maybe not quite that honest feedback but something? Anything? I got : "She's doing great, she's working hard and has a great attitude.." every single week. Huh. So why was there practically no progress? I still have no idea and part of me wonders if the tutor was paying attention. I'm not blaming them for my daughter not "acing" the ERBs, but I do think that anyone who is being paid to help a child learn needs to be able to communicate with parents if the child is or is not actually learning. Also, there were a lot of stressed out kids here - it kind of wigged both of us out to wait for very long in the "reception" area because a lot of the kids (and parents) seemed to be under a lot of pressure.
