I had two appointments with Dr. Grady, and both left me wondering why I had been referred in the…read morefirst place. My urogynecologist had recently performed a cystoscopy and found a couple of bladder cysts. She told me they did not appear serious but referred me for follow-up. I attended my appointment expecting to discuss those findings and understand the next steps. Instead, the visit lasted only a few minutes. Dr. Grady exchanged pleasantries, asked how I was doing, and then told me to return in six months. I left without understanding the purpose of my referral, whether the bladder findings required any further evaluation, or why a six-month follow-up was recommended. Later that same day, my primary care physician asked whether Dr. Grady had looked inside my bladder to evaluate the cysts. When I told her he had not, she seemed surprised. That made me even more confused about the purpose of the appointment. As a disabled patient, attending specialist appointments requires transportation coordination and significant effort. I made the trip believing the appointment would answer important medical questions. Instead, I left feeling that my concerns had not been addressed and that my time had not been respected. My criticism is not that the appointment was brief. A brief appointment can still be excellent if the doctor explains the diagnosis, the purpose of the visit, and the treatment plan. Unfortunately, I received very little explanation, and I left with more questions than answers. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Dr. Grady because I did not feel informed, listened to, or given a clear understanding of my care.

I called the office and talked to Stephanie about my concerns. She was supposed to contact Dr. Grady and get back with me. Nothing for weeks! Then my appoint is approaching and she called me this morning. I asked her about the concerns I have with the urine test results and her response: are you sure you talked to me??? FYI, I am sure! I even marked on my calendar! Instead of admitting she forgot, she started to slip and slide and tried to get out of it. Very unprofessional! As Phonsombat entered the room he was already speaking in a raised tone of voice , I had never laid eyes on him before yet he was angry. Pushy, plowing ahead without seeking / allowing a word from me, said I "talked to" this person or that person as though to use that as a threat, was verbally aggressive, wanting to subjugate, construing my medical picture as dire without bothering to acquire one word of information directly from me, or, refer to medical conventions, statistics regarding data pertaining to outcomes. I've made critical comments about other Urologists at PAMF .... I suspect Phonsombat has taken on the task of the Urology department "hit man". He isn't the first. He was not able to comment on a question about a drug I'm taking, a commonly prescribed drug in urology. I answered it for him after the fact. He does not resemble a solid stable seasoned professional in any way I could see. Read all the books no doubt, anybody can do that. Possesing a depth of character and humanity, that is a different matter. That is what makes a great doc. I had decided on the newest treatment well known for yielding equivalent result with fewer side effects. Phonsombat used the hackneyed "that is not proven" to weakly attempt diminish that decision. That is the "weasel" response of the century used in American medicine (that would be the system that is on track all by itself to bankrupt the wealthiest nation) , it's like saying global heating isn't proven. We will never be able to afford double blind proof of everything so we need to be smart about integrating empiric evidence ... or perish. It's not complicated but does require smarts. The bizzare part, he was angry and didn't even realize it, so natural. In what universe does a doctor begin a first meeting with a new patient in an angry state and not realize it.? If he was aware .... well that is substandard medical care and indicates he is an emotionally bereft as regards self awareness. Avoid this guy like the plague. Further checking regarding medical facts reveal he is clueless in factual matters here. I'm 72 with a lifetime of experience with world class old school physicians , firstly my father a beloved pediatrician, public health official and founder of Redwood Medical in Redwood City. I also have MD degree and trained with game changing psychology , medical /psychiatric researchers prior to getting a medical degree. This unsavory picture is repeating itself with PAMF urologists. Another PAMF urologist Keith Lee blew a gasket and withheld proper care I'm sure because he needs to be up on a pedestal and is not in my eyes. I received a threatening letter from someone claiming to be the "clinical coordinator" at PAMF urology, a woman who is clearly unstable , angry , obviously disturbed. She threatened to cut off all medical care after my observations about other PAMF docs I regard as substandard. She singled out one comment and worked very (very) hard, we're talking serious overtime, at trying to misconstrue me as racist. Not only does she appear to be uneducated she was unable to leave her rage out of her (so called) professional life. If you are going to be a professional you need to learn to leave that stuff at home, or better yet, heal it completely. To me its shocking PAMF would employ someone like that. Its ominous about PAMF. I also have to say I've met a few really top notch docs at PAMF. Top of the heap, good people.

Dr. Rosenberg gets 2 stars because he didn't keep me waiting too long past my appointment time, and…read morehe did spend more than 10 minutes with me. Unfortunately, it didn't do any good. He treated me like a moron, didn't listen, and didn't solve my problem. So he only gets 2 stars. I was born with my right ureter through a muscle, which caused many kidney infections as a child. The local doctor misdiagnosed this as backwash. Luckily, my mom persevered and got a correct diagnosis and I was successfully operated on when I was 6. Last year (at 28), I had 3 kidney infections within 6 months. I thought this was a problem, so I starting the slow path through the insurance and doctoral hoops until I finally got to a urologist, who had a test done, which revealed that (surprise surprise) my right kidney had reduced functioning. He said this was likely due to scar tissue from the childhood operation, and could be fixed easily enough. Unfortunately, I moved to SF before we could get on with the fixing. The old urologist recommended Dr. Rosenberg here in SF, and I immediately made an appointment in hopes that we could start out where I had left off with other urologist. I brought with me my chart from the other urologist, including the results of the kidney function test. I wrote down my whole history in their "new patient" forms, and then told it all to Dr. Rosenberg. He pretended to listen, and then proceeded with the generally uncomfortable process of manually exploring my urinary tract. Below is a small excerpt of the frustrating conversation that ensued: Dr: It's probably backwash. Me: Actually, that is what I was misdiagnosed with as a child. Dr: Hmm. So, where's your scar? Me: On my lower abdomen. (Dr. examines scar on lower abdomen) Dr: Well, that is not where the scar should be, if the operation was what you said. It should be up here on your side. (Dr. proceeds to physically turn me and search for a scar on my side. Like there really might be a scar there that I had not noticed in the past quarter century. Like maybe I got a long thin scar on my lower abdomen through some other childhood scrape, like, I dunno, falling off a bike, and that distracted me from the REAL surgery scar on my side, unnoticed by me until the astute Dr. pointed it out.) Me: Um, no, I am sure I don't have a scar on my side. I don't know exactly how they did the operation, but I know it was my ureter through a muscle. Dr. (giving up on searching for the elusive side scar, but with no explanation as to the actual scar on my lower abdomen): Couldn't have been. It's probably backwash. If you have backwash, go to Dr. Rosenberg. For any other problem and/or for an actual doagnosis, go elsewhere. I am.

Not only he's a very talented brain surgeon, among other things, but he is also a down-to-earth mannered guy, pleasant to talk to. He answered all the questions clearly and patiently and told us everything that we needed to know. He had the best side manners when both my wife and I spoke to him about the transplant program. My transplant match exchange came through 2yrs later in 2016 and I've been 8yrs clear and doing well. There was an 18 month up and down period before stabilizing but since end of 2018, it's been been living on borrowed time. I was fortunate to have 3 or 4 friends volunteer to donate a kidney to me but all ended not the best candidates. On after transplant surgery and since that the pandemic, I have been lucky to have follow-up semi-annual video visits with Dr Katznelson on half the visits. He is always so positive at each visit. I've known of Dr Katznelson since I found out I got sick and was put on transplant list. I've only ever met him once before in a video visit! He did remember me, it was nice when he first walked in, gave me a firm handshake and said "finally nice to meet you in person, we've only met virtually." So that made me feel nice when people actually remember you! He sat and gave me a lot of information I didn't have. He even confirmed some false information I was given a while back. So now that I have the real info, I'll be doing what I can with it. He was patient and answered all my questions. Great doctor! Highly recommend him to anyone!
