I've been going to this dr office for over 5 years now but never actually seen the 2 docs until Dr Alberda joined the team. I first started with Kristin F (practitioner) when I would make an appointment. I always felt comfortable and she was always helpful, informative, and listened. Every time I walked into that office I am greeted right away and there wasn't a long wait time. Everyone is always smiling and filled with joy. I travel from south austin and I don't plan on changing them unless I move far, far away. lol Now that Dr Alberda is part of the team there is no better doctors office then this one. I have never walked in to a place like this where you get joy, understanding and great knowledge/skills like this office. Even the phlebotomist is a sweetheart with great skills to draw your blood. Its a short visit with her but her pleasantry last beyond that. Every single person of the staff is excellent at their job and they feel like old friends. I wanted to give kudos to this team and know that it's appreciated how they treat the patients like family with care and excellent skills. I had a referral from my orthopedic surgeon so I called for an appointment and was asked for my insurance information. So I told her my primary insurance was Medicare and secondary insurance was BCBS. She told me they didn't accept Medicare patients!!! read more

This practice came HIGHLY recommended by several folks on social media and neighborhood sites. After reading these reviews and my experiences with a big group practice, I was ready to switch to Dr. Alberda. I even did my new patient paperwork and emailed the forms to their office (with no response, by the way). This morning, I needed a return to work note (the joys of state government) after I was out sick after New Year's and an urgent care diagnosed me with COVID. I called Dr. Alberda's office to see if I could get in and was initially told that I could be seen shortly after lunch the next day. That sounded great. Then the scheduler/receptionist kept asking for my name and date of birth, saying that she couldn't find me in their system. I explained that I had already sent the new patient paperwork in via email and had changed my primary care provider through my insurance. Then she proceeded to condescendingly explain that I had "not yet been accepted as a patient" and told me that Thursday was the earliest I could be seen. I have no doubt that there are excellent physicians here. I also know that the first impression was made by the scheduler/receptionist. As such, I found another practice whose office staff actually appreciates new business. read more

I have never been treated so poorly. Their medical records staff member Gina was rude, condescending, and overall a nasty personality and it completely destroyed any fondness I may have had for this clinic despite having been a patient of Dr Margolin for several years. Not only was Gina rude and unhelpful but she threatened to mail off my medical records to a random address when she couldn't easily obtain the contact information of where my medical records needed to be sent to. This made me feel vulnerable and unsafe dealing with an unhinged person having access and authority over my important and sensitive private information. Until they get rid of Gina BEWARE. I suggest you go elsewhere where they are more professional. read more

Dr. Margolin has been my primary doctor for 25 years (!!) and I am gutted to learn that he'll be retiring next month. He's a great doctor and has helped me a lot over the years. I will keep going to this office, however, mainly because of how AMAZING his PA Sarah is. To be honest, I see her about 95% of the time anyway. She is extremely competent, which is important, but she's also empathetic and warm and...it's hard to explain this, but: completely real in a way that most doctors don't have time to be. She doesn't have time to be either, but somehow she pulls it off. I have a complex medical history with lots of chronic conditions, and my annual physicals can be lengthy (last one was 90 minutes, yikes) -- but I've never felt rushed during an exam. Routine issues, like UTIs, are taken care of quickly. Sometimes, but rarely, I've had trouble getting on Sarah's schedule and have seen one of the other PAs, and my experiences there have always been good. The only thing I don't like about the office is one of their current* triage nurses. (They have at least two right now -- maybe more, not sure.) One of them is really REALLY not good at talking to sick people; she is completely lacking in empathy and doesn't even seem interested in helping anybody. I've just learned to expect a poor experience whenever I deal with this particular nurse; so when possible, I try to deal with the other one instead. That's not as easy as it could be though. My suggestion to the office would be (a) do surveys on experiences with the triage nurses, (b) consider training or mentoring based on those surveys, and (c) make it an option for patients to call a triage nurse directly instead of only having the option to call into the main nurse line and...inevitably, somehow...getting the one who's not very good at her job. That said, Sarah is worth putting up with 10 apathetic triage nurses. I mean that. All 5 stars are for Dr. Margolin and Sarah. :) -- *In fairness, their past triage nurse Debra was exceptional and is probably hard to live up to. She sadly passed away and is very missed. read more

Doctor Margolin, I adore you, you are friendly, knowledgeable, and very clear. Doctor Margolin, please please please STOP accepting new patients that you/your staff cannot adequately handle without causing declines in patient care and satisfaction. It's not your nurses' fault, it's not your pa's fault, because it's clearly IMPOSSIBLE for them to handle this volume of patients and it shows in their curt flippant attitudes, lack of follow up, and lack of communication amongst each other regarding what steps are still "pending" in the patient's care plan. Your patients should not have to call and leave a voicemail each day after lab work or an xray. 4 days for those type of results, especially when a nurse cheerfully sets the expectation to get it done same day and "be sure to call me tomorrow morning so we can go over this" is not acceptable. Being from the medical field, I already knew that wasn't going to happen (LOL trick please! What kind of hustle do you think this is?) so tried to give it reasonable time. It's wasn't that anyone hadn't received the results, it was that no one had time to review them at add anything to the patient chart for their coworkers to share. Imagining an actual call back is laughable. At least put updated notes in the charts so that anyone can read them to a patient who calls in. Doctor, balancing care between yourself and a team of skilled PAs and RNs overall contributes to great efficiency gains! Patient A who is dying gets to see you, and Patient B who has sniffles can see someone else who can tell him to rest and drink fluids and take vitamin C and all that DUH stuff which, as patients, we all need to hear sometimes because we're stupid and dramatic and think a viral cold will kill us. Both patients live happily ever after. The problem is prioritizing patient care outside of that dyin' or whinin' dichotomy. I've been here probably 7 or so times and I've only seen the doctor once. One of the nurses I dealt with gave me incorrect information on a suspicious health altering lump...originally putting me at ease that the lump I had was OK and I didn't need to do anything but follow up in a year or so. Next thing you know, she tells me she went over the results with a PA and I needed a biopsy right away. Didn't explain why. Didn't explain the differences in what she initially thought she saw versus what was there. Didn't really answer any of my questions before or afterward, considering I couldn't reach her by phone to discuss results. These are people that break your practice. Dr. Margolin was very personable and thorough when I finally saw him. He answered my long list of questions I made. I made a list because I was terrified if being told the wrong thing or being blown off or never getting a chance to speak to anyone that actually knew what the hell was going on. I love the doctor, I wish I could see the staff that "supports" this practice excel, because they seem like a team of potential winners that can't actually win due to sheer volume. Stop takin' new patients when overwhelmed, moneybags! The thing is, they get paid the same regardless of their level of communication, timeliness of follow up, etc. And I pay the same regardless of those factors. So for my health and my pockets, I gotta move on. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Margolin for 11 years. He is a friendly, calm approachable doctor. I have actually gotten appointments with him only 3-4 times and mostly dealt with his multi-talented and no BS PA Sarah Pierce Brigante who is possibly one of my most favorite people in the world. I am going to be frank here. I just fired Dr. Margolin as my PCP. He is a good doctor, and his practice tries to do a good job but they have failed to treat my chronic issues over the course of 11 years and I think I have given them enough chances. Let's break down my dissatisfaction with this practice: Appointments: It is impossible to get appointments with Dr. Margolin when it matters. One time I had to schedule a physical 3 months ahead of time. Physicals I can understand but I never could see him for sinus infections and other things that had to be taken care of. I could however always get a hold of Sarah and she has been the one that sees me the most. Front Desk: The front desk people at this clinic are not friendly, I don't think they know how to smile and over the course of a decade have never smiled and/or said anything friendly to me. Is Friendliness absolutely required? Not really but it would be nice after all this time. In their defense, they never messed up insurance paperwork, appointment data etc. So they are doing their job but they're clearly not enjoying it. Diagnoses And Treatment: There was a phase when my allergies were at their worst when I would go in with sinus infections and always come out with Mucinex. Mucinex is bullS..... I am sorry to say it but it does nothing. I don't even know why anyone uses any of our non-renewable resources to manufacture that stuff. It is a mystery to me. Finally after I got a referral to an allergy specialist and got on allergy shots, I sighed a breath of relief -- pun intended. I have always had sleeping issues -- as in restless sleep, talking, teeth grinding, waking up like I pulled an all-nighter. I was sent to sleep study by Dr. Margolin and I came back from that night at the hospital to find out that both my doctor's office and the hospital had magically lost all records of the test. I was not pleased. In time I figured out how to tame my sleep on my own mostly using herbal supplements like valerian root at bed time. I also have back problems due to a pars defect(fracture) in one of my vertebrae. This was also never taken seriously by this clinic. I was sent to an orthopedic surgeon(usually they do nothing until you slip a disc / pinch a nerve etc) and then was told I would get a referral to a chiropractor and then never got it until I went in and saw Sarah one more time and said "I am not walking out of here until I get a referral to a Chiropractor". Dr. Margolin once laughed at my face when I told him I had IBS. My cycles of GI unhappiness went untreated for a whole decade because this clinic was never inquisitive enough to follow up and do more tests, and try things. I would say that both Dr. Margolin and Sarah are VERY conservative in terms of use of medication. This can be a good or a bad thing. It is good to not take antibiotics unnecessarily but it is something else to be walking around with breath-taking explosive diarrhea for two weeks while waiting for tests to come back. What is this Clinic / Practice Good for: Dr. Margolin is voted best physician in Austin. Maybe I did not get how wonderful he is. He is a good guy but I must admit this practice is truly for people sick with the flu, cold, sore throat, upset tummy... the simple stuff. If you have anything complex that needs investigation, further tests, inquiry or out of box thinking do not go here, you will be disappointed. This practice has all the tools of a modern day practice, computerized patient records, on site blood and other testing facility/lab, several patient rooms, nice wait room, etc. All the parts are there, what's missing is... well it is hard to describe but I think this practice feels like a government managed health care provider with private health insurance company rates. Final Note: Maybe there's something wrong with me. It is entirely possible. But all I know is I did not get the treatment, the continuity, the broader vision and focus on the patient from this clinic. read more

I spent ten years bouncing from doc to doc in Austin. When I was struck with some debilitating mystery illness that kept me from being able to work and my doc at the time was clueless, some folks at work got me in to see Dr. Margolin, who was thorough and tireless in his efforts to sort out the problem. Especially given the circumstances when I first began seeing him, I've seen Dr. Margolin a lot. He has always been warm and friendly, has always taken the time to listen, explained everything well and at an appropriate level, given me the opportunity to offer my opinion and feedback on his recommendations, and given me the opportunity to ask questions. I've gone in before and insisted that I don't care what the test results say, I know I have X problem, and I want to see Y about it, and here's why, and he's always been receptive. I've been seeing him for about five years now, and I--who am very difficult to please in the doctor department--have been very happy. When I have something routine I need to go in for, I just make an appointment with Sarah; she's also an exceptional listener, is very caring, is thorough and well-informed, explains things well, and gives me the opportunity to give feedback and answer questions. I adore both Dr. Margolin and Sarah, and Dodi's great as well. Especially now that they've extended appointment times, I can pretty much get in right away whenever I call. The longest I've waited to get an appointment with the doc was about a week, and that's only happened once, maybe twice. Whenever I've spoken over the phone with the nurse or needed to get a referral processed, she's gotten everything taken care of lickety-split; I've always appreciated her quick response and efficiency. I'd agree with some other reviewers that one of the front office staff is sometimes a bit gruff and not always on-task, but I'm not there for the office staff. As long as the job gets done, it's all good with me. I'm there for quality medical treatment, and Dr. Margolin and his staff have delivered every time. read more

I think Dr. Margolin is probably a good doctor overall (he's received various awards), but here are 3 reasons I will not go back. 1) His staff: Specifically the billing manager, Shonda (or something like that) is ignorant and not good at communicating. This alone is good enough reason to not go back if she's still there. 2) Billing: I mentioned going to a specialist and the treatment I was seeking under the specialist over the last year during my well visit. My intention was just to share what I thought was overall important information about my health. I understand now that it is legally enough reason for them to charge an office visit charge (~$142) in addition to a well visit charge. So learn from my mistake and if you go here, keep your mouth shut on what other treatments and problems you have with other doctors for the sake of not being double billed. 3) Like others said, its really hard to get an appointment in a timely matter. Overall not worth it for me, I'm looking for a new PCP. read more

BEWARE: if you go in for a general physical and you are not in perfect health, or any of the tests come back abnormal FOR ANY REASON, they will change the type of visit from physical to general consultation. This might change how you get billed as it went from a free visit to a $150 bill because of an error with a test. Awful service because none of this was explained during the consultation that the type of visit had changed. In fact I was even told by my physician that the extra blood test they wanted to do would be classified as preventative, but the billing department thought otherwise. WORST DOCTORS IN TOWN...ID BE DEAD IF I CONTINUED TO TAKE DR MARGOLINS ADVICE...what a quack...I had an Atrial Myxoma tumor...i took 2 steps n had to rest in pain for 20 minutes...I went to him for a few years be4 this as my pcp...for normal checkups, ie...I told him along w my sig other of 20 years It was my heart...its my Heart...its my heart...please kindly do a stress test...he sent me to daylong tests one after another to one gall bladder doctor, liver doctor, 2 more gastroenterologists...w more intravenus all day dye readings...while I was a zombie in such pain...Blacking out...Doctor Keinharth...send me to the heart doc...do a stress test...im not gonna make it thru the weekend...dr keinhardt scheduled me for another gastroenterologist in 2 weeks...i begged n pleaded along w alika my sig other of 20 plus years. He doesnt care about anything but turning a quick buck, even at the expense of his patients lives. I told Alika i wasnt hoin to make it for another day n to just take me to the austin heart festival off 38th near whole foods. She did n within a hour of an echocardiogram...dr juanna karha n my surgeon dr quan/a seasoned cardiologist told me n my family that dr keinhardth about cost me my life n and do t listen to him...n i had a slim chance of survival after he spent so much x sending me to more unqualified docs. I we t thru full open heart surgery n a year later when i was able to see dr keinharth...i told him i almost died because of him...n all he said after ALL the Trauma, n misdiagnosis...was well...sometimes the patient knows best. Terribly run doctor's office with deceiving billing practices -Aug 2020: I obtained a basic annual checkup. Basic annual checkup was covered with no co-pay by Aetna insurance. During the appointment we discussed three things that I had questions on. No testing was administered, it was simply a conversation of how I can address those three things. -Sept 2020: I receive an email, which contained no detail, stating I owed over $100 for my appointment. Knowing my basic annual checkup is covered, I figured it was just an automated email notifying me what the value of the service rendered was and not an actual bill. -Jan 15, 2021: I receive another email for the same amount with no detail. -Jan 19, 2021: My brother forwards me a voicemail left at his number from someone at a collections agency with my name in the voicemail, but no detail. Since I had received the bill email from Margolin's office four days earlier, this prompted me to inquire with Margolin's office. -Jan 19, 2021: I call the billing department of Margolin's office. Jerry in billing reads out loud (likely a HIPAA violation) what the three items were that I was billed for, which are not even listed on the invoice upon checking later. I replied that those items came up naturally as discussion points in an annual checkup appointment and that the doctor did not stop the conversation to tell me that if we discussed those things that I might be billed separately. Jerry then replied that the insurance company asks to see notes from the doctor visit and then charges deductibles based on the notes. This is likely a lie, as an insurance company isn't going to go looking for reasons to charge patients by going through appointment notes. The doctor likely itemized the discussion separately and tried to charge the insurance company for it. The insurance company then determined those discussion points were outside of a standard annual check up and tried to bill me separately. I expressed that the doctor should warn people that if we switch topics during the visit that they may be charged separately. Jerry replied that it's not the doctor's job to be concerned with the money aspect of care given. She also stated that I signed a waiver stipulating that I may be charged additionally for advice given in an appointment and that I just may not have read it. I replied that I wanted to see a copy of the waiver, to which she replied she couldn't send it, but I could find it on Margolin's patient portal. After checking, the patient portal did not contain a copy of the waiver. Jerry also gave me the phone number to Aetna to call and a series of serial numbers to give Aetna to dispute the claim. I called the Aetna number and the phone tree immediately asked for a tax ID or an care provider number. Jerry had given me the phone number that a billing department would call and not a patient, which created another dead end for me. I called Margolin's office back and left a voicemail explaining that the phone number I was given was incorrect and that the copy of the waiver I supposedly signed is not on the patient portal. I'm waiting for a response. I liked the doctors at Margolin's office, but if they think they are going to run a successful practice by administering shady billing practices, by hiring unhelpful staff who give you the run-around, and by sending his patients' bills to collections agencies as if they were deadbeats, then they are mistaken. You won't get the 100 bucks from me on principle, as it's clear that you've designed a system that gets people to give up in frustration and just pay you. Others on Yelp are calling this out as well and you won't be able to continue it for long. read more

I haven't had any of the issues with his staff that other reviewers have reported, nor have I had any problems being seen in a timely manner (though I visit for chronic issue management and physicals, not acute illnesses). I've been seeing Dr. Margolin for about 15 years now, and I've had great experiences with appointments and the staff. They make appropriate use of technology within the practice, but also take the time to know their patients; they LISTEN, and offer personal service. I've seen both Dr. Margolin and PA Sara Pierce Bregante many times, and I have to add my accolades for Sara as well. She's wonderful, thoughtful, and thorough. I recently had to have a series of tests. I'm a needle weenie, and I can say that their in-house lab tech was one of the best at the blood draw (if not THE best) of any I've had. I also appreciated that they got back to me quickly with the results, and the information about next-steps in treatment. I highly recommend Dr. Margolin and this practice. read more

Hmmm, I just don't have the experiences of the other reviewers. I see Dr. Margolin at least twice a year and he is available when I have a special circumstance. Yes, for the flu etc., I see the PA who is great. Dr. Margolin gives me referrals to specialists when I request it, and prescribes all needed medications. The only problems have been in getting the referrals processed by staff, and I have noticed the front desk person mentioned in another review who is not too friendly and always acts busy when she is not. However, all other front desk folks have been friendly and helpful. This is a a helpful, caring office that does a great job taking care of my medical needs. I recommend them. read more

This is a terrible medical practice. The office staff is so rude, but you have to pay your copay first to get anywhere so you have to go through them. Money up front, then you see the Dr. You have to wait forever to get in, and then once you're in a waiting room you have to wait even longer. It has a terrible vibe and I hate going there. Dr. Margolin is a good guy but I'm dropping him. He's my GP but I always go to the Austin Regional clinic instead - much nicer staff and Drs. Always quick to get in and be seen and I get great medical treatment. Good luck trying to make an appt. at Margolin's office. A friend of mine who moved here from LA went there because she heard he was a good Dr. (she hadn't talked to me) and she was looking for a GP for her family. A few months later she was telling me about a horrible experience at a Drs office and it was Stephen Margolin's office. Such a shame. read more

In fact i was told that There was NOTHING this week and just spoke to the nurse and explained my symptoms and how i just finished two rounds of antibiotics and still am running a slight fever and have a cough. I am sure Dr. Margolin is fine. I have seen a PA the 3 times I have been at this office. The PA was was great. The reason I will not go back is the incompetent front desk staff and the staff member handling calls. I was given the wrong information over the phone as to what I needed to do for a reup on blood pressure medication. I was told I needed blood work taken - wrong - I needed an appointment - which I knew but was unable to get the person on the phone to understand this. So I showed up - and of course did not need blood work taken. I needed an appointment. The staff member at the desk said no problem - they would be able to get me in. I guess she meant in at some point that day. I waited an hour and left at which point I really could have used some blood pressure medication! These people have got to clean up their act. read more

I love going to the Doctor now! Dr. Margolin listens to me and has helpful suggestions about my issues. I often see Dr Sarah Brigante (BS PA) because I am mostly needing fairly simple help (well-woman. bladder infection, sinus infection). This morning when I went for my bloodwork the receptionist actually explained to me what she and the other receptionist were talking about as if I was a real person! People seem happy to work there. As I was getting my blood drawn there was laughter from other employees who were comparing their high heeled shoes because it was high heel Friday! read more

I went to Dr. Margolin's office about 4 times and had good experiences. Sometimes I saw the nurse practitioner or physician assistant and they are all very knowledgeable and helpful. They listened carefully to my needs and concerns. I never had a long wait to see the practitioner or any other negatives. I have chronic migraines and some previous doctors made me feel like a pill-seeker, which can is not okay. I had much more comfortable visits at Dr. Margolin's office. I'm no longer a patient only because I moved out of state. I would definitely recommend. read more

I have only had good experiences with Dr. Margolin's office. But mostly it's because of Karen, the PA. Everytime I have seen Karen she has been nothing but kind, caring and is a great listener! I have been going to Dr. Margolin's practice for 5 years now, and I have seen Dr. Margolin, Sarah, and Karen. These are 3 out of the 4 doctors that work there and throughout the 5 years I have been going they have failed to treat my medical problems with nothing more than ibuprofen when I had back pain that was so bad I couldn't see straight, and when I had bronchitis, sinus infection, and the flu I was told to take mucinex. I have asked to have help with my chronic back pain, but they only tell me that there is nothing there, and somehow they seem to think they know this even without an x-ray. I do not have insurance right now and just paid $75 for them to tell me to take Ibuprofen for the worst back pain I have ever felt, and seriously thought about going to the ER because it hurt so bad. So I do NOT recommend anyone go see this practice unless you want a doctor who will take your money and tell you buy an over the counter medicine to cure all your problems. read more

I've heard Dr. Margolin is amazing. My parents absolutely love him. However the young Katherine Rebuck PA who works there is awful. Very flip and nonchalant with poor bedside manner. When I asked her specific medical questions she did not have the answers and did not try and find out. She shrugged and didnt even try to answer. If I go back I will try and get an appointment with Dr. Margolin. Most likely I will just try and find another office. read more

Dr. Margolin has been my primary care doc for almost 15 years; and I have nothing but great things to say about him, and about Sarah (his PA). Both are calm, thorough, and truly caring. They do not rush appointments. They follow up when it's important to do so (sometimes via Margaret, their fabulous RN). So the 1-3 star reviews surprise me, although I can agree with them on one point -- the front desk staff does not seem that happy or professional. This is not something I care about, since I only deal with them to check in. The BACK office staff, however, is exceptional. I'm not sure who files my paperwork with insurance, but whoever it is does a good job; I've never had any problems with billing or claims. And I should mention Margaret, their triage nurse, again -- she is amazing. I have her extension number memorized. :-) And if you're having trouble getting an immediate appointment with the front office staff, Margaret is really the one you need to talk with -- she'll triage you and get a same day appointment when it's critical. I've NEVER had a problem getting seen immediately...usually with Sarah, but quite often with Dr M himself, and once with his partner Dr Keinarth when no one else was available. (Dr. K seems nice too; but I've only seen him once, so really can't say much about him.) I have a rather unusual number of medical issues, a few of which are serious and require me to see specialists regularly. Dr. M's office does a reasonably good job of coordinating care, but I should also note that I am very proactive in managing this myself -- I do not expect (or want) Dr M to "take control" of my care, and manage every detail. Someone who wants a micro-management approach may not be happy with this office, because I definitely don't think Dr M or his staff have any interest in doing that. What I do want/need is a physician who: - treats me as a partner in managing my care...ie, explains things thoroughly and is honest when a condition is beyond his expertise, and trusts my input too - does not hesitate to order tests when necessary - is quick to recommend a specialist when necessary - is consistently available to other doctors for consultation - takes as much time as necessary to keep updated and accurate records on my health history Based on those criteria, I would rate the care -- and the coordination of care -- that I get from his office with 5 stars. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Margolin for around ten years. I have only good things to say about my visits, the care I receive and the staff. Dr. Margolin goes out of his way to make sure you're given the best care possible. I have had to wait occasionally to get an appointment or sitting in the waiting room but I've not been to a Dr.'s office that there wasn't some sort of wait. I guess that's why they call it a waiting room. Dr. Margolin is a great GP and knows full well when to advise someone to see a specialist. I would recommend Dr. Margolin to anyone including family and I have. Dr. Margolin is very open minded and willing to discuss any legitimate alternatives to addressing whatever problem you may have but he can be very stern if he knows the correct treatment and you don't want to do it, I know. I still have the highest reguard for Dr. Margolin and would not want to see anyone else. read more

Beware of the business practices of Margolin's office. They billed me for an exam I never asked for and they would not admit their error. The customer service in the practice is a complete failure and the office manager is completely incompetent. read more
