Steve's new store on Sainte-Catherine is a must for every musician in Montreal area, they don't have any choice as Palais des congrès ( Congress house) ask them to moved as they are rule by government it was move or die choice. so after being on sainte-Antoine street (old Montreal) since 1965 ! They moved to downtown last summer. Their store is in a nice spot in front of bar Foufounes Électriques on main street ( Sainte-Catherine) and inside they have less space but everything is nicely placed (unlike the old store were everything was place in a spot wherever they can put it. And they have a nice stage were they want to put live artist and it should be really interesting new idea in future. After the owner died (Steve Kirkland RIP), his son want to keep it going. I will see if they can survive in this new era were most peoples buy used in Canada as most new music gear is overprice cause of USA currency over CND dollar. But this is the the ultimate music store in Montreal, the only thing is that they don't do exchange (old guitar for an new one) unlike lots of stores in the province, so maybe it can be a new thing that can make them earn more profits if they change it. When i was younger salesmen were rude, but now they are super friendly ( maybe it's because older peoples have more money than younger ones but i think that they should take care more of their customers. But now they're friendly and competent. This place was the place were any Montreal musicians went to buy gears. In their old store they have a wall full of pictures with autograph pix with well known musicians like Aldo Nova, April wine, Frank Marino, Voi Vod, Simple Plans etc. So if you want to go to the Montreal best music Store you'll find the place. I'm a newbie drummer that owns what I call a "FrankenKit" When I first walked into Steve's I felt a bit overwhelmed and insecure because there seemed to be so many "real" musicians in the place and I didn't feel as though I belonged there. I was so relieved when I started explaining what I needed the staff listened - actually listened - and came up with really great solutions to the problems that I set before them. Their welcoming vibe also made it an enjoyable experience that I have had the pleasure of repeating on several occasions. I am loving my new gear and feel like I've made new friends. I've only been there once at their old location. As an electronics repair shop owner, I prefer to do everything in-house as much as possible, but certain jobs require skill sets or equipment I simply don't have then I don't mind outsourcing it. They're one of the few places I know of that recone speakers. read more

Worst customer service ever. I wanted some maintenance for my guitar but they were unable to give me a price quote and they made wait 2 weeks for a price quote. I called them 3 times and then got my guitar back without maintenance since they took so long. Another time, I wanted to try a PRS Silver Sky (a Strat copy) and they plugged me into a small 5 watt Vox amp!!! You are not supposed to test that guitar with that amp to see how it sounds. The salesmen are snobby yet they do not know what they are doing. I'll try there and buy on other guitar shops in MTL or online from now on to make sure they do not get a dime from me. I can't wait to go this business go down someday as they truly deserve it. Bad management. Employees are badly trained as agents and irritating as human beings. read more

Full disclosure: I am not a musician. I couldn't carry a tune if John Lennon came back to life and told me that to bring world peace, all I had to do was hum the notes to Imagine on key. I can't tell you the difference between a GIbson and a Les Paul, but I can tell you that Steve's carries both and can school you on the musical advantages of each guitar. Patchwork flooring that is definitely original to the building adds to the worn in comfort of the place, even if you might worry about falling through if you take one wrong step. The walls are lined floor to ceiling with beautiful instruments. An almost weird grouping of rooms keeps the instruments organized from electric, acoustic, and other, so there is some kind of organization amidst the beautiful chaos. If you're looking for something special for the musician in your life, this is definitely the place to check out. It is full of history, and also full with musicians on both sides of the counter willing to give you a bit of advice. The only thing is, the staff was a little intimidating from a non-musician's perspective. They were nice enough when you looked past the flannel sweaters, ripped jeans, and heavy metal band t-shirts, but I couldn't help but feel a little judged as I tentatively browsed the aisles. I definitely felt out of place, like an intruder stumbling into some secret club's ritual ground. Steve's is so full of musical history that it just might be. read more

I was visiting Montreal from out of town and was keen on going to all the major music stores here (Moog Audio, Twigg, Steve's). We essentially only have Long&McQuade in Halifax and I'm getting bored by their limited selection. After reading some of the negative reviews on the web, I wasn't quite sure if I should bother with going to Steve's. I went anyways. I checked out the guitar department and the keyboard department (on a quiet Sunday morning, mind you) and was pleasantly surprised by the great service I got in both. Bought a synth for almost 10% less than the L&McQ price. Would definitely go there again. I will say, however, that the store is quite dirty. Almost all the instruments that I played or looked at had a thick layer of dust on them (as had the box of the synth that I bought). Not a great business strategy to showcase high end musical gear that is filthy. read more

I asked for a cymbal that I wanted at the store, and they said they had it, but in the warehouse, not the store. They told me I would get it in about a month if I ordered it. I usually never buy cymbals without trying them in person first, but I really needed that cymbal very badly for one of my bands, and I thought I really liked it after watching video demos of it online, so I made the mistake of acquiescing. The next thing I know the salesman tells me I have to pay in full right away. So, I agreed because it felt I had no choice from the pressure the salesperson put on me, and the price was quite high, about $500. After paying, he informed me that I would receive a phone call as soon as they have the cymbal in the store. And, before I left, the manager overheard us, and he told me they should have it by the end of the week (not month). Long story short... I never received a phone call in a week. And, I never received a phone call in a month. It's been almost 4 months since I've ordered the cymbal, and every time I passed by the store or called them by phone, they told me they did not receive the cymbal yet. Not only that.. on top of it, whenever I visited the store, the same salesman who sold me the cymbal would disapprovingly tell me not to come to the store if I didn't receive a phone call from them yet, as if he's my boss or something with zero respect for me as an autonomous adult individual. Eventually, I asked the manager about the situation. He told me that although they were gonna get the cymbal in a week when I ordered it, someone beat me to buying it online before that happened and it was the only cymbal they had of that model. That is a totally unacceptable lame excuse. I paid in full at the store before the online purchase. We are in the year 2023. Even in 2008, GuitarCenter in the USA knew to book an item from getting bought online once sold in person at the store. There is no excuse for Steve's not caring enough about their customers to not lock items up when sold in person after getting paid in full. The place is totally unprofessional. Anyways, I still haven't received the cymbal. I already decided to never shop at Steve's again. I recently bought a new bass pedal from another music shop, and I got it instantly. I also got a China cymbal elsewhere too. Never again will I shop at Steve's because their personnel are not trustworthy and they don't keep their word. Let alone the fact that they are unprofessional and disrespectful because they never at least called me to inform me that they wouldn't have the cymbal in time for their promise out of courtesy. I needed to buy a new acoustic guitar and my friend just wanted a some kind of guitar, so I knew about Steve's Music Store down near the Old Port. We make our way down there. From the outside you wouldn't expect much on the inside based upon looks, wrought iron windows, etc. Anyway, once inside they have the store broken up into different areas. One area for acoustic guitars, one for electric, others for other instruments. Each section has a dedicated staff member who is supposed to be an expert on the goods. We first stopped in the electric guitar section because my friend wasn't sure which guitar to get. The staff member was knowledgeable about the different types of guitars and what kinds of sounds each produced. We decided to check out the acoustic section next. Again, same sort of service was provided by the staff there. In the end we both ended up with acoustic guitars, with the help from the staff members who didn't exude a pretentious attitude. I have sent my AKG K 271 MK II headphones for repair at the store. I had to pay around 35$ for the "depot". Finally, it wasn't repaired and I get told that it was not worth repairing because the mecanism is now too fragile since it is broken. I decided to try to do the job myself and just got them repaired today. It was only a loosen wired needed to be soldered. $$ in trash. Thanks Steve's music! read more

There is no money back guarantee at Steve's Music Store, if you are not satisfy with a product you can return it but you not be able to have your money back. After weeks of negotiation with the store manager to have a defective instrument replaced through the store, I realized that Steve's Music Store was working against me and was forcing me to keep a defective device that did not meet the manufacturer specifications. I had to bypass them and go straight to the manufacturer for a replacement. I bought many instruments from Steve's Music Store in the past believing that I would get a quality service but after the incident I realized that my life would have been much easier if I had purchase the device at an online store. read more

I will preface this review by saying that I have been a customer of Steve's for over 25 years. I've bought Les Pauls, I've bought amps, drums, countless strings, pickups, and other accessories. Customer service has always been somewhat unfriendly and rough around the edges., but I tolerated it.....up until,today. This Saturday morning, I wanted to bring in a telecaster to have the pickups changed and to perform a compete setup. Since I'm aware that the store is moving locations soon, I wanted to call and verify that they were still accepting instruments to repair at the Old Montreal location. The store opens at 9am. I happened to call at 8:59am thinking I'd take my chances that someone would answer. After about 5 rings, an employee answered the phone. I asked him if I could bring my guitar in to the store. He started to shout at me right out of the blue. He said " It's 8:59 am!!! What did you do? Set your alarm clock for 8:59 just so you could ask me your question?" I was so taken aback at this prick mouthing off to me, that I simply answered him honestly "No" ( I hadn't set an alarm just to call his store) I happened to call him when I did. It's not like I called this guy at his house. He was at work. If he didn't want to pick up the phone, then he should have stared at his watch until exactly 9::00am, lest he put in an extra minute of work into his day. I'm sorry this guy hates his job and probably his life. As a musician, I would think it would be a real thrill to work in a music store. Unfortunately, you will find that most of the employees at Steve's are morose as hell and very cynical and jaded. The point being that it is inconceivable to me how a business can be so abusive to customers. I have a small memo for Steve's: You are not a monopoly. I can get any guitar or amp I want from Musician's Friend, Sweetwater, Cosmo's, Long and Mcquaid, La Music, Axe Music, Archambault, Best Buy, Nantel, and even good old Jimi's music in NDG. Customers should do themselves a favour and spend their money where they are appreciated. I just brought the telecaster into Jimi's on Sherbrooke street and told them the story about Steve's mouthing offf to me for no reason. The guy at Jimi's rolled his eyes and told me he feels like nearly everyday someone walks into his shop and tells a story about problems with Steve's. I'm more than happy to support Jimi's music and some of the other merchants listed above. I'm done with Steve's as of today. I'm looking forward to buying a Marshall Silver Jubilee head and matching cabinet in the next year. Steve's clearly doesn't want my business. I'm glad to buy it elsewhere. read more

Don't you love being bounced from department to department on the phone for a half hour, having to make 4 phone calls with sometimes rude employees (some were nice), until you finally track down what you're looking for and are told that the item you want, listed on sale at $229 on their website, is actually $299 if you want to buy it. If you're ever wondering why bricks and mortar stores like Steve's will one day be wiped out, it's probably things like this are going to contribute to it mightily. THE music instrument store in Montreal where vintage is king! As a beginning musician, it is definitely not the best store, because as in most music stores, they aim at the professionals or the advanced amateurs. However, my experience at Steve's was less friendly and courteous than anywhere else. Staff were either playing or discussing with each other and my request for trying certain guitars was badly met. I wanted a versatile guitar for jazz and rock and they showed me a metal guitar before one of them began to play it for five minutes. It's okay to show me how the guitar sounds like in more expert hands, but I want to try it for myself. When the staff felt that I was not interested by the guitar they showed me, they became unresponsive. It was an example of bad customer service. However, I give the store a three star rating because going to Steve's is an experience in itself. It looks like the music shops of the 1980s and the smell is somewhat special to put it bluntly... Just listening to customers trying the gear and moving from a department to another (it looks like a collection of small music stores around one block) is something! If you are a pro or willing to spend a lot, you will certainly love your visit to Steve's, but if you are more of a casual musician, only go there for sightseeing, as you will get better service elsewhere... read more

All I wanted to know was if they had a certain drumset that I am hoping to get my son for christmas. I TRIED CALLING 5 TIMES!!!!!! First I waited on hold for over 20 minutes. Second time I called I was bounced around from the electric guitar section, to the keyboard section, to the Book section. CALLING THIS STORE IS A NIGHTMARE. I called Archambault and the gentleman was super helpful, they didn't have the exact drum kit that I had originally saw on the Steve's Music site, but he had another one in the same price range so I bought it there. I have had 2 experiences w/ this location. The first was on a Boxing day, where I came w/ the "Mom token" on-hand as a sure sign I was there to make a purchase. The sales person who "assisted" me was the worst I've ever experienced. He completely neglected me, except to approach me only to ask if I was almost done. I was in the market for an American Tele, or Strat, but found the make of those models lacking at the time. At one point I tracked him down to ask him if he had any unique vintage, or used guitars. He pointed directly at a 64' Stratocaster, and I asked if he had anything else. He snapped back, "Gimme a break that's the best guitar we have". Immediately storming off near the end of the sentence. Regardless I left w/ a Gibson that caught my eye just as I was on my way out. The second visit a few month's later was even worse. In an attempt to acquire an L.R Baggs pick-up and Pre-amp for my acoustic. My bassist/room-mate and I compiled some very high quality pedals, and an assortment of other gear we had grown tired of, as the only way we could afford it was by way of trade. What ensued, was both insulting of humiliating as we were confronted by the store's manager. Despite his unwelcoming demeanor, we were very friendly and with smiles - explained that we had a bunch of stuff to trade towards the item of interest. I can still quote his response, "Yeah, and what makes you think we want to trade with you?" I continued to smile, and diplomatically replied, "Well, I understand you may not want the stuff we have, but have a look. There's probably a few thing's you'd be interested in." "Well, do you have receipts?" "Well, no..." "Then how do I know you didn't steal this stuff?" I was totally caught off guard, and looked around the store to see everyone was staring at us. The last thing I remember was asking, awkwardly, "Why do you think we would have stolen this stuff?" He coldly dismissed us, and I recall walking out of the store humbled and actually hurt. There's a difference between bad service and abuse, and I've never experienced anything like that at any other outlet. Musical, or otherwise. If you find this story unbelievable, imagine experiencing it. There Toronto location, on the other hand has been very pleasant in my brief experiences w/ them. There's a one star minimum on the rating, but I did find my first "real" guitar there, which I enjoyed playing for year's. So, I'll grant them that for selection. read more

Waste of time. I went in last November for a guitar repair. They took my number and said they would get back to me after contacting a Fender rep for the actual piece, but I still have not heard from them yet..... No matter I went to Archambault Music and they resolved my issue. Oh by the way. While I was waiting for someone to help me, I found a beautiful Ovation guitar. Unfortunately for them I bought my guitar else where and at a cheaper price. Anyway I work right next to the place but and will never go back. I got the impression that I was not treated well because I'm not an actual musician. It has been my 5th and last visit. read more

I had an excellent experience at Steve's. I originally just went in with a friend to buy some guitar and bass strings. The staff was absolutely amazing. We talked to Franco in the acoustic guitar section, as my friend was interested in getting a guitar in the future. While there, I fell in love with an acoustic bass and had been wanting one for a while. I went back a couple of days later, and it really was the service that brought me back. Franco was awesome, helped me out. Made sure I had everything I needed and even hooked me up with a few pics and Steve's hat! I will go there any time for any of my guitar or other instrument needs. read more

Its the second time in a row I go into the ProAudio/Microphone section and have a terrible experience. The older gentlemen with the white hair is interrogating me about every single purchase I want to buy. He is asking about what I'm planning to do with the things I'm buying and then he is being very condescending to me and speaks like I don't have any idea what I'm talking about. The first time I went in to the Microphone section was 2 weeks ago to purchase a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50xmg headphones. The guy spends half an hour telling me how I can't use those kind of headphones to listen to music on and blah blah. I had 300$ cash in my pocket and I left the story empty handed. Not only is it Christmas in a few weeks, but me and my husband will be celebrating our anniversary, and buying a Gibson style "Less Paul" guitar has always been on his bucket-list, so I decided that this year would be the year I would give him this very special christmas gift. I know nothing about music, but a musician co-worker of mine suggested Steve's Music Store in downtown next to chinatown. When I called the store to inquire about the models, I spent about 10 minutes explaining in great detail the type of guitar my husband was looking for, at the end of it all, the gentleman informed me that he worked in the "accesories" section and he could not help me. I then waited on hold for 5 minutes, then 10, then 15, eventually another man picked up. I told him about the guitar and he said that he worked in the Keyboards section. At this point I assumed they were too busy, so I hung up. When I called back an hour later, the exact same problem. I spoke to someone in recording, then the DJ section, then the guitar pedal section, literally everywhere EXCEPT the guitars. I have never seen anything so unprofessional in my entire life. I ended up finding a nice Gibson guitar at a little music store in Ahunstic (can't remember the name right now) and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I very much wanted to shop at Steve's since it seems to have a bit of a legendary status among montrealers, but based on my experience calling in I would never shop there. read more

The staff that I've met have a lot of experience, good advice, and some have some pretty cool stories about the music scene in Montreal, past and present. I've heard mixed opinions about Steve's in Montreal. I have heard that they are snobby, service isn't great, if you don't wave money in front of their face they ignore you. Through all of this I decided to go anyways, mostly because I know they have a great selection to try out. I was very pleasantly surprised when I was greeted in the acoustic guitar area, then the guy just made sure I knew where to look and what my options were, (based on a couple questions he asked). He checked in on me as I tried a few, but for the most part left me alone to mess around a bit in private, which was what I wanted. What I was even more impressed with was that when my decision came down to two guitars, and a fairly substantial price difference between the two, he did not push the more expensive one. He simply told me why it was more, pointed out the differences, and then also made sure to point out that in the price range I was initially going for, the one I picked is the best option and assured me that I'd be happy with it. I ended up going home, thinking, came back the next day and bought the more expensive one based on the facts he gave me, not the pressure. To me, a great sales person. He even went to get a second one of the same so I can play them both and decide which one I like better. He could have easily told me that was the last one, or just not bothered offering the choice. The store was quite busy that day. All in all I am giving it 5 stars for service, selection, and even price. I shopped this guitar around on line and he even beat the price from a US distributor that is generally the cheapest out there. read more

They don't check any guitars that they are selling! They just take them out of their box and put a price tag on them and that's it. If the guitar has horrible fret buzzes or a crooked neck or any obvious defects it's buyer beware! Always carefully inspect any item you buy at this store because the quality control is up to the customer only! read more

Went in last Sunday, They only had one model left of the PedalTrain board that I wanted. I normally wouldin't ask for a deal, but considering that, it was very dusty and even missing some parts, I didn't think that it was unreasonable to ask for a small discount. My salesman Brian, was very helpful and patient. He told me that it was already discounted but would ask a manager to see if something could be done. A few minutes later, a manager came to speak with me. Probaly the most condescending and sarcastic person I have ever met working in a retail setting. The man just mocked me to my face, and told me to go ask for a deal the next time I am buying groceries for my family. I have spent most of my money on musical equipment at Steve's, but I definitley will not be going back there. read more

I am not a serious guitarist at all. Let it be known. I can strum a few chords, but that is about it. Although, I do enjoy fooling around and playing Bob Dylan tunes for friends and family whenever I may have a guest or two over. That in mind, I knew I wanted a new acoustic, my old Segovia was just not cutting it anymore, and after much research online, I had decided on the Taylor GS mini. I went down to Steve's Music on St Antoine in old montreal. Upon walking into the Acoustics section, I was greeted by an older gentlemen with white hair and an intimidating demeanour. In the acoustic section of Steve's, they have the majority of their more expensive models in a sectioned-off part of the store. I wondered in on my own and found the GS-mini! As I was playing, the gentlemen with the white hair wondered into the sectioned off room and proceeded to tell me that I was not very good, and needed practice. I told him that I was just a casual player and didin't take it very seriously. He told me that music is not to be taken lightly and that he had put in so many years etc etc etc.... The man literally spoke about himself and what an incredible player he is for the next 15 to 20 minutes without letting me get a word in. I finally asked him about the model of GS Mini that comes with a pickup (as I hear they have recently started making). He proceeded to tell me that I would have no need for the version with the pickup, as I was an awful player and would not want to amplify the noise I was making. (His actual words) He was extreemly rude, arrogant, and condescending. I left shortly after. I eventually ended up finding a GS-Mini in Mahogany on Kijiji for 350 with gig bag included. I am very happy with the guitar, but needless to say I will not be heading back to Steve's anytime soon. read more

I have given this store my business two separate occasions, and after the first time receiving horrible customer service I decided to be open minded and go back and only had a worse experience. After seeing a particular Martin guitar in the store, I went in to find it had been sold. I asked the clerk if they would be receiving another one in the next shipment to which he replied "I don't know. It could be a while." Now I am not asking for much but I would assume if someone is asking about a guitar that is worth a fair bit of money that maybe they would have looked up any future shipments or at least how long in-between shipments, or see if there are any available elsewhere instead of giving me a blatant no. I don't expect the world, just some level of customer service that is going to make me choose Steve's over Long & McQuade. I figured, I would give them another shot with a repair thinking that it could have just been an off day for the salesman, who actually gave me the same "I don't know speeches two months later when I went to check again." I went in for a crack repair on an acoustic guitar and they said no problem, it'll take a little while due to the nature of the job and I said thats fine. I called after three weeks, a month, 6 weeks and they said it still wasn't ready. It should only take a guitar about a week to two weeks max to rehydrate and be glued. After 2 months of calling almost every week they finally tell me that the weather was not warm enough to fix so they were waiting to fix it. They never thought to call me and tell me that they couldn't fix it right away?! While it was in the shop I had to rent a guitar to play shows (obviously I rented from Long & McQuade who now have my business). Had I known they would only fix it in warm weather (even though it could have been fixed in cold weather by rehydrating the wood), I could have held onto it and played it for two months.
