Personally I think this is one of the best first time experience of me entering a music store.. I was nervous and shy, I didnt know how to approach someone, I was just standing there for minutes looking at the guitars on the wall, suddenly a staff told me if I needed anything hes there, so yeah I had no choice so I approached him and asked if I can try out some electric guitar! I wont forget him haha he was so kind and polite, even gave me a free pick, honestly if i have thoughts on going to music shops id pick this shop everyday.. I recommend people to go here. read more

Store has lots of nice stock at reasonable prices.... some really cool guitars and amps. Went in there today to buy a practice amp, store had approximately an equal number of staff = customers ratio on the main sales floor (4-5 of each). Staff more interested in texting and telling each other stories, tried to "hover" around their congregation area but nobody acknowledged my existence (didn't want to interrupt their story-swapping, you know). Finally decided to wait behind a customer cashing out and caught the attention of guy behind counter... told him the name of the amp I wanted, 3 times for clarity because there's several amps with similar model numbers. Was told that they should have a boxed amp "in the warehouse" (or "stockroom" as it's known in normal world), so I said thank you and waited. As soon as the stock guy brought the amp out towards the counter, I could see it was the wrong model so I tried to be helpful and told him "I think that might be for me, but it's the wrong one-" and he snapped back at me "WELL, MAYBE THIS ONE ISN'T FOR YOU!!!" -yeah okay buddy, maybe it's for one of the other 2 customers hanging out by the sheet music. Just trying to save you some time and energy here. He continued to place the wrong amp on the sales counter and threw his hands in the air like I'm a stupid piece of shit, and walked away. I then waited another couple of minutes to catch the attention (again) of the salesperson behind the counter, but he was now busy with someone else. I was in that store for 15-20 minutes and couldn't even make a simple transaction. I left, without an amp and purchased one online instead (see attached pic for proof). All I had to do was click a few buttons and wait, no crappy attitudes or trekking downtown on my day off. So much for "shopping local". I tried. I have been going to Steve's since it first opened...Yes, that's a long time. I've bought a few guitars, amps and also had repairs. Never an issue. Most of the staff are musicians or involved in local music scene. Yes, they are not pandering corporates, like L&M, which is also a great store... Not a bad place to buy gear. There selection is pretty good and prices are not bad. So why the two stars? Never ever ever take a guitar you care about into this place for repairs. I have done so, twice. The first time was a fret dress of a strat and they gouged the heck out of the fretboard. The second was a setup of an acoustic guitar ( a Taylor) that I had bought there. The guy sanded the bridge saddle to a ridiculous angle and there was a hige amount of relief dialed in on the neck (it turns out that the digital tuner he was using was calibrated wrong [flat] and so he set up the neck for tuning down to Db. When I went to pick up the guitar and tried it it was obvious to me from the loose string tension that it was way below concert pitch. He refused to believe me until I insisted that he try another tuner. What a maroon! I wonder how many other guitars he set up wrong that day?). read more

Steve's is packed to the gills with everything you need from beginner,, to if you playing the Horseshoe across the street. Great selection of guitars, keys, and heck drums are upstairs! I was super impressed with the Boutique guitar pedal selection. I was pretty tempted to try a few things out. I did sit and play an acoustic 12 string for a few minutes and enjoyed the hell out of that! Flying home back to Iowa would have been a little tougher carrying a new synth but I had options if I wanted too! I walked into Steves will the full intention of buying a guitar stand today. I cannot believe how rude the employees are here. While testing a stand some guy who looked like Guy Fieri started yelling at me from across the room about how I was placing the guitar incorrectly in the stand. This is not the first time I've experience this kind of treatment at Steve's. Unfortunately, I live in the area and am forced to purchase things from here once in a while. This time, I immediately walked out! I'd rather drive an extra 30mins to give Long & McQuade my business. I'm not an accomplished musician. In fact there isn't an instrument out there that I can't play really, really badly. But it came to pass one day that I was doing a stand-up show and needed to get a mic stand. I went in with the sole purpose of purchasing a mic stand. Twenty bucks, in, out, be done with. $250 worth of equipment later and I left with the same sort of look on my face as everyone coming out of Steve's. Myself, guitarists and drummers alike all had the same look on our faces, "I didn't mean for this to happen." Everywhere you look in the store, there's musical instruments or the things used to make music. It's pretty overwhelming and even when crowded, the staff find time to get you sorted out with the stuff you came in for and give you the time to let you browse for the things you didn't. The store is pretty packed: guitars, basses, amps, petals and accessories stuffed to the max. They have a lot of more expensive pieces, but they also have cheap, affordable guitars for around $200. I bought a Yamaha acoustic guitar about 10 years ago and it still works beautifully. They carry the popular brands such as Fender, Yamaha, and Ibanez. But when I actually went to the store, I had a totally different experience. As a neophyte, just looking at all the stuff available can be intimidating but I encountered very patient and kind staff who walked me through my options (shoutout to Barry who helped me with my purchase). Had my Gibson les Paul in for a simple repair and setup. it took over a month and when I showed up for pickup the repair wasn't done and they had actually lost the toggle switch cap. I asked them about it and they brought one up that was black and argued with me that it was the original. I proceeded to show them pictures of the actual original which was a cream colour and they still didn't believe me. After 4 employees grouped together to talk to me about how this was my fault they asked what they could do to make me leave the store essentially. I said get me another toggle switch that Gibson uses for my guitar model. They said it can't be done without me paying them and one of the employees literally said he has one on his guitar at home he can run and get quick If I want. After practically dying of cringe and anger at their unprofessional attitude I walked out never to return. read more

An impressive use of space, they really pack a lot in while still having enough space to move around. Lots of guitars, amps, pedals, etc. although there are not many used since they accept trades but do not buy used gear. If you're looking for a new guitar or bass then this is your place, if you like to peruse the used market then you'll have to go somewhere else. read more

I have been reading some of the reviews of Steve's Music and found it interesting that I had the same experience, on more than one occasion, with those who found poor customer service. I have shopped at Steve's since the early nineties with friends of mine (one of which is a drummer), when Corky was the manager, and little Joey was working there as well. Corky was very professional and Joey always helpful, but then, as usual, things changed. Corky left and they got a new manager, Jeff Zurba, and it was then that I understood the attitude that many people are talking about here. He was frequently rude, sarcastic, and arrogant. I even noticed twice that he would come in to work after the weekend with blood shot eyes, and I can only guess as to why that was. You can only imagine, then, how his state of mind was and his customer service skills. They were pretty much non existent. I also shopped at Long & McQuade and dealt with Lance, who was very mature and always professional and helpful. I thought why do this to yourself, when I could get the same product for the same price (or damn close), without the attitude. My friend had a cymbal case where the handle broke. He called Lance and went it to exchange it which he did in a second. No fuss, no issues, and no attitude. I shop at Long & McQuade all the time now and they are just wonderful. I heard after some time that Jeff had left Steve's, but it just left me with a bad taste in my mouth that I didn't want to go back. If anything Steve's Music should get out of this, if they are listening, is 2 words: "Customer F'in Service"!! I think this is the reason L&M has proliferated as they have over the years, and it's just such a pleasure to shop there. And I will continue to do so, even though Lance has retired since. I love Steve's Music Store!!!!!!! I've just bought an Ibanez guitar from them and they gave me a good deal!!! I was even like $20 short but they helped me out!!! Incredible guys!!! I've always been their customer - for more than twenty years now!!! Since 2000!!!! Now it's 2021 - so!!!! Still remember the time back in 2000 when I was hanging 'round Grange Park and Much Music Station. I'd always go to Steve's and windowshop the musical instruments and tried them out - playing Metallica's and G n R's lead solo loudly. Oh, yeah!!! Only, only one time a guy told me to stop playing so loud - usually from my experience Steve's is my favorite musical instrument joint. From my experience, I love going to Steve's; love them so much. I share lots of found memories with Steve's!!!! I'll go there whenever and whatever musical instruments I need coz they are the best and biggest in Toronto. Super unimpressed with the store and head office to boot. Will never ever shop there again. Basically, got stuck paying a rental fee for an item we had purchased after we tried to return it, and only at that point were we informed that they do not accept any returns. I wrote two emails to head office, both of which have been ignored. Here is the first outlining the details of my experience: My husband recently made a purchase at the Toronto, Queen Street location of Steve's Music store. He had been looking for a specific device for sometime, and was happy to have found something that the sales associate said would fit his requirements. FYI, it is the Fender Passport Mini that was purchased. Though my husband wasn't quite sure it would fit the bill, there were no "non return" policies stated anywhere for that type of purchase, so since we were in the area we bought it. Upon getting home and checking it out further, he realized it wouldn't do the job, and that what he needed would be significantly more expensive. Two days after the purchase, we returned with everything still in the box, completely unused, and with the receipt in hand. After explaining that we wanted a refund and the sales associate proceeding with the procedure for several minutes, he only then called the manager and we were told they did not do any returns. We were totally shocked as NO WHERE does it state ANYTHING like this. The manager informed us it is listed somewhere on this website, which by the way, I still haven't found. Obviously we hadn't come on the website and checked if there were any hidden policies before making the purchase since we were at the physical store shopping. The manager, Gerry, who was very fair and reasonable considering the ridiculousness of your apparent policy, informed us we could pay a 15% "rental fee" but get the rest of the money back. Again, this would be TOTALLY fine and fair HAD THIS POLICY BEEN LISTED ON THE RECEIPT. I get it. You need to protect yourself from people who use and abuse the system. But it's outrageous to do so in such a slimy way, and not be able to really look at case-by-case, since that so clearly wasn't the case with us. Paying the rental fee isn't a big deal. Karma takes care of that stuff. But it's the principle behind all of this. I'm extremely disappointed with your store, and since my husband is a musician in very prestigious music companies in both the USA and Canada, it is a shame you have lost his business. read more

Steve's has a reputation as THE music store to go to, but I don't get why. Every time I've been in there I've found the staff to be extremely surly and unhelpful. There is a large selection of instruments and music books, but they're stacked on shelves so high that half of them are out of reach. I went here to buy a guitar stand for my friend since I was in the area. I looked around and couldn't find it so I asked the service guy and he gave me an annoyed look and pointed up. Worse customer service I've ever see. First a keyboard is sent to Steve's for repair. They accept it, they send it to Montreal for Korg to fix. 8 months later and tons of asking 'why its taking so long', the keyboard comes back, Steve's takes $1450.00 and then when I get home the keyboard boot up screen is black and not visible and nothing works. Maybe Steve's should have checked it worked before taking my money ? Calling Steves-- first No Manager is on and the highest in command can't do anything. He then tells me its my problem not theirs. I drove 3 hours there and back and they expect me now to waste more time and gas to do it again. They say they will take care of it but when pressed, cannot say what that actually means. Wait another year for repair, charge me again, waste more of my time. Seriously - I have 7 Korg keyboards and I can tell every keyboard player out there that if you want proper gear and want it serviced, DON'T BY IT FROM STEVE'S. a Zero star if it was available. After talking about it for nearly 3 years, I finally decided it was time to restring my guitar. I popped into Steve's to grab a new set of strings. Staff were plentiful and very helpful/knowledgeable. Dude even gave me a youtube link I could watch if I needed a refresher video on restringing my acoustic. I had to get the feck out before I left with a new guitar! They have a lot of guitars in there. (I had to keep reminding myself I'm not in high school anymore and I don't have 6 hours a day to mess about playing 4 different guitars in my basement). The cashier set up is ridiculous. There are two girls sitting behind a glass booth in the middle of the store. You have to go around and they write up this really old school looking carbon copy receipt. Considering I was spending $6.99 on a set of strings, I thought this was a complete time-waster! read more

I went to Steve's yesterday because I was frustrated with the acoustic guitar that I can't play ... and I wanted an ELECTRIC guitar that I can't play ;) All kidding aside, I'm a total grunge fiend and I want to learn how to play it! Peter asked if I needed help within minutes of me walking into the store and he was AWESOME. So helpful and so knowledgeable... and he took his time to answer all of my (many) questions :) I narrowed it down to either a Telecaster or Stratocaster. I always had my heart set on a Telecaster because I love Jeff Buckley to the moon and back .. and I felt like one day, I might be good enough to learn one of his songs! Peter knew I didn't know how to play well enough to try the guitars out, so he walked around the store and played any guitar I wanted to hear :) He explained to me the differences between all of the guitars and I learned more in that 45 minutes than I have in my entire life. That guy knows everything! I ended up going with the Telecaster and he set it all up for me, tuned it and even carried it out to my car! A+ service! I will definitely be back! Have been coming here for almost a decade now, and the best thing about this store is that they always have a great selection of gear for you to try out (but you have to ask first, where at long and mcquade you can try anything anytime. From acoustic guitars to djing and studio gear, they have quite a bit of everything on display. It can get pretty crowded on the weekends, and the staff are usually busy, so you might have to wait your turn to try out a guitar or amp etc, but never for too young. I bought an entire bass rig here and the sales clerk who helped me was very friendly and helpful and even gave me some special deals. The only reason I'm not giving a 5 is because they don't have a cash return credit, just store credit, so if you plan to make a big purchase, choose wisely! read more

Steve's in Toronto has some of the best staff that I've ever dealt with when it comes to music stores. I've been playing guitar for almost a decade and have visited my share of guitar shops, but this has to be the best one thus far. They give you freedom to look around, but should you need help, they'll gladly service you and will probably teach you a few new things about new guitar models, bands or special events going on in store. The last time I bought a guitar from Steve's Toronto, I left with two new friends, and staff suggested bands (that ended up being awesome). This past week, I went in to research some 7 and 8 string guitars and once again met with incredibly helpful and supportive staff who were able to give me maintenance information and added a few new guitars on my list of equipment to try out. They seem to really want to find the right guitar for you, even when I said up front that I'm in no position to make a purchase at the moment. The jackass music staff you usually find in other music stores (like I found at Steve's Montreal, or some smaller shops...) won't be found here; the staff seem to check any egotistical aloofness at the door, and are actually really friendly! As for the selection, obviously, it's a huge store. What they don't have on hand, you can order (usually with no obligation unless it's some obscure item), and they let you try out anything you're interested in. Great selection, and they always bring in new stuff to try out. Most importantly for me though, being a female guitarist, I recommend this place wholeheartedly because of the staff's inviting and respectful nature. The people here take you seriously without any need to "prove yourself worthy". No looks of disdain, no sarcasm, and no bullshit. Located on Queen Street West, Steve's Music Store has become one of the musical instrument staples that is part of the Toronto cultural scene. If you happen to be a young whipper snapper interested in buying your first instrument in hopes of making it into the music industry and achieving rock star cocaine fueled dreams or learning the acoustic guitar to play the same old Bruno Mars song because 10,000 other people did it on Youtube, this is the place to go. Pertaining to previous posts and complaints of employees working here behaving like d*ckheads, I definitely have witnessed that. Unfortunately, it is expected at a place like this or any other trendy establishment in the Queen Street West area, but of course not to be tolerated as we of course expect the best and friendliest service possible and that's why they only get 3 stars in my books :D I bought a decent acoustic guitar from here a few years ago as I dreamed of rock stardom after watching a Michael Bolton live in concert DVD where these ladies in their 50s were in awe and throwing their panties at him. Still a really cool place to drop in when you are in Toronto...but not the place it was years ago. If you get a good sales associate (and you're actually there to spend money) it's a pretty good experience. If you are just searching for your next purchase, you probably won't be taken too seriously. I also find it cramped compared to the wide open spaces that their competition has worked hard to create. I have to admit, I'm not a musician.. (pause for gasp) so to be writing a review about a store who's sole focus is to satisfy the musical orgasms, musically talented people crave, seems a bit far fetched for me... But alas, it's not. You see, I go to this store with the sole purpose of finding something to make the BF happy.. Whether it's a music book or a few interesting picks or even a mandolin once, I've always found something unique. A few months ago, I accidentally broke a guitar... it was an accident but alas, it has been weight heavy on me... so off I went to Steve's music to find something that would make the BF equally as happy. What I found, was the banjo section. I knew he'd be impressed with a banjo... but I wasn't keen on buying him one that was manufactured in China.. I wanted a real american made, solid banjo. An incredibly helpful sales rep told me there was one he could ship to me from Montreal and I could have it in a week. I was impressed with the turn around and paid for it in full right then and there. I figured I would be back in a week to pick up this banjo and off I went... WRONG. I got a call personally from the sales rep who sold me the banjo with bad news. Someone in the MTL store mistakenly sold my banjo to someone else... and there wasn't another one that I could get in the turn around i needed. I was devastated and a little pissed to be frank but the sales rep assured me he would fix this hiccup... and fixing it is what he did. He got an even better banjo (from the same great company) and it came with all of the fix'ins, bag, strap, picks, and a DVD. Well all better things come at a greater cost than originally anticipated... but the manager agreed to pay the difference. (a $200 difference I might add) and with that, I was able to bring home a newer, nicer banjo than I ever would have expected. And all because of a sales rep who just gave a shit.. I will continue to go to Steve's Music moving forward for all of my BF's musical needs as they went far above and beyond to fix what could have been a real crappy situation. read more

I'm not particularly versed in music stores, but i've been to a fair share while looking for a gift for a musically talented friend. steve's has a huge assortment compared to other stores i browsed. everything (instruments, books, etc) looks hands-on, as though experimenting is encouraged. grrrrrrreat! EXCEPT. as a musical-know-nothing-friend, i don't want to try-it-and-buy-it. i want a sales person to help me, please! there were staff "available", but i had to approach (and interrupt their conversation amongst themselves) before anyone even seemed to notice me. and then, musical snobbery was felt. when i finally broke down explicitly that "I AM A MUSICAL DUMMY", they finally treated me like a customer (instead of challenging and sussing out my worthiness of the gift i planned to buy). this store makes me want to become more musically-inclined, but it also intimidates me from trying. read more

Went in with my bandmate to buy a patch cord for my bass this past winter. The dude at the counter was so rude and questioned us about it for a solid 5 minutes, asking various - extremely stupid - questions. All I needed was a short patch cable to hook up to an amp, I told him I needed the cheapest one, as I am in college and can't afford something super expensive. Still grilled us and continued asking weird questions. Super condescending. I roll my eyes whenever any of my friends mentions they have to stop by Steve's for whatever reason. read more

I have been to Steve's in the past to pick up instruments and accessories in the past, but never for an instrument. Last weekend I went to pick out a new bass with a budget. It was really cool to see the selection they had - more than I had seen at any store before, with a wide range of styles and prices, from less than 200 to well in the thousands. Being on a budget, I had already done my research online and had a pretty good idea what I was going in to get, narrowed down to 2-3 different models. After checking them out, I got staff (who was always around but never pushy, letting me check things out by myself as needed - a welcome quality when so many other shops get so pushy it's uncomfortable to shop there) to help me out, they showed me that they had the basic model I wanted (settled on a LTD Viper bass, I just wanted something simple to play at home). Turns out they had a more deluxe model than the one I was looking for for only $10 more than I was looking to spend - ka-ching!!! Staff was very good at explaining the warranty, etc, so I felt confident in my purchase and the store I bought it from standing behind their product. I would recommend this store to anyone looking for anything to make music happen! read more

Steve's is one of those places that just can't really live up to its reputation. That isn't to say that it's a bad store, but it just isn't nearly as good as most people seem to think it is. I've bought multiple pieces of gear at Steve's and have brought multiple friends there to shop for their gear as beginner guitarists. Every trip I've ever had to Steve's has had the following things in common: 1) It is nearly impossible to find staff to help you. 2) When you do get someone, the knowledge level of the staff if very hit or miss. I've had people trying to sell me on guitars, give me wrong information, and then openly admit that they're really bass players and aren't entirely sure about what it was they were saying. That just doesn't cut it. What Steve's does have going for it is a relatively big selection and generally very low prices. If you know what you want and don't need help finding it, Steve's is great. Walk in, grab it off the wall and buy it. If you do need help, you'd might be able to find it, but it's hard to say exactly what the quality will be. There are some very, VERY knowledgeable sales folks at Steve's, and then some who...well, aren't. If Steve's has what you need, and the price is the best, go for it. But shop around first. And if you really need help, going to one of the smaller stores, or even L&M, would probably be a better choice. read more

Been going to Steve's on and off for about 15 years. They are probably the second largest musical instrument store in Toronto. Though Steve's has a variety of musical departments what they are known for are guitars and drums. Many a rock band have passed through Steve's, their rock heritage is strong in T.O. Yeah so guitars...Holy crap they got a lot of guitars! From floor to ceiling; bass, regular electric and acoustic. I must have herd "Crazy Train" and "Enter Sandman" a half gazillion times walkin through the store over the years. Huge amp and guitar pedal effects selection too. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and are willing to suffer any wide eyed teen who walks in and asks "Hey man I want to sound like that guy from Slipknot!" Their drum department is also pretty legend, it takes up a whole upper level of the store. They also have a pretty decent keyboard department as well as the odd DJ related equipment. Steve's band instrument department is pretty weak over all, I think it's just a side novelty department. You might find a horn here to your liking but really these kind of instruments are not what Steve's built their reputation on. As for prices, they aint the cheapest in T.O. Time to time you'll find stuff on sale though and there is good deals to be had their. Word of advice, their website only has a portion of what they actually have in stock. All in all I recommend Steve's. Especially if you wanna rock out. read more

Not only is Steve's an institution for musicians - especially rock musicians in Toronto, it's also a tourist spot along Queen St. W., and a hangout for wannabe rock stars too. Right across the street from the legendary Horseshoe Tavern, Steve's helps to cement the fact that Toronto has a vibrant music culture and can hold its own when it comes to the larger North American music events held each year. I like how they have almost everything priced with a bold sign, reminiscent of Honest Ed's hand lettered signs in that timeless manner because they know the place get swamped with gawkers and window shoppers. Not my first choice to go to, but if the other music stores don't have something in stock, I'll buy it here if they have it. Staff is o.k..... the usual musician types as other music stores - not better, not worse. The interior of the original building needs an update. read more
