Review / Complaint About My Experience With David at Steve's Tattoo I've been getting tattooed at Steve's Tattoo for years -- by Steve himself and by many artists who've come and gone, including David, who this review is specifically about. Up until recently, I actually liked David's work. He's done multiple tattoos on my sleeve and even tightened up some older pieces to make everything flow together. His talent can be great when he actually tries. But what happened this year is something people deserve to be warned about. 1. The First Red Flag Last year David tattooed a tarot card of my dog on my bicep. The work turned out great, but his behavior that day was... off. He was short, rude, and uninterested in even basic communication. I brushed it off as a bad day. We talked afterward about finishing my sleeve, so I assumed things were fine. 2. October 26th Appointment - The Point Where Everything Went Sideways I booked an appointment for October 26th at noon to finish some filler on my sleeve. What actually happened: He made me wait over 30 minutes just to start setting up. He barely spoke and acted irritated from the second I walked in. I explained what I needed: the same pattern and color he started near my wrist, carried up the rest of the arm. I put my headphones in because the tension was so uncomfortable. While he was tattooing, it felt like he kept going over the same spots repeatedly. I have tattoos on my neck and feet -- I know what tattoo pain and swelling look like. This was different. When I looked, the area was extremely red, raised, and bleeding more than anything I've ever had. When I got home, I realized why: He only used ONE color -- and it was the WRONG color. The design didn't match my sleeve at all. It looked sloppy, rushed, and honestly more like flames than the pattern he originally created. It already looked like something that will age terribly. I emailed him politely because I was genuinely afraid I had somehow upset him and he did this intentionally. That's how uncomfortable and off his behavior was. He told me to come back on December 10th so he could "fix it." 3. December 10th - The Gaslighting & Disrespect I went to my appointment today hoping he would make it right. Instead: He completely gaslit me. He insisted the tattoo "is the same" (it absolutely is not). He claimed "there's no room," "it would look crowded," and "that's the best he can do." When I showed him the areas that are clearly different, he just argued and dismissed everything. And then he said the part that really tells you everything you need to know: "I don't want to work on it anymore." "You're being too emotional." "I just don't feel like it." He refused to finish the work he messed up. I begged, I reasoned, I even offered to pay him AGAIN just to fix the damage -- because I've already had multiple artists start and stop this sleeve and I wanted the same person to finish it. He didn't care. When I asked for Steve's contact info, he refused to give it to me. When I turned to look for a business card, he literally yelled at me: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? THE DOOR IS RIGHT THERE." He treated me like trash and threw me out of the shop after knowingly giving me a tattoo that doesn't match, isn't the right color, and was done so aggressively that it raised and bled more than any tattoo I've ever had. 4. Why I'm Warning People I've never disrespected an artist. I tip well. I sit still. I don't complain. I've never caused a scene or been rude. There was absolutely no reason for him to treat me the way he did. And here's the truth: **If David gives you work you don't like, he will NOT fix it. He will gaslight you, blame you, and then kick you out.** I don't know if he was having a bad month, a bad year, or if something happened between appointments. But what I DO know is this: What he did to my arm was careless and nothing like the work he is capable of when he actually tries. And the way he treated me -- after years of being a good client -- was inhumane, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable. People deserve to know. read more

This was my very first tattoo and they made all six of us feel comfortable and answered all our questions. On top of all that, the artists were amazing! My nine year old daughter just got her ears pierced here by Jessica. Jessica is absolutely amazing!!! She is fabulous working with children (& I'm a teacher ;-). Jessica is super friendly & nice, talks the children through the process in the kid-friendly way, teaches them a breathing technique, etc. I definitely recommend this place & Jessica for getting piercings done! I've had two tattoos done here, but the latest one was one to tell my friends about!! I had an appointment at 11am, so it was right at opening, and I met with Alex. He was very helpful, honest, and genuinely fun to work with! He took the time to draw up the sketch for me, which I expected to take some time, and go over sizing with me. It took some time to get into the chair, but then it was really awesome! He put on some music we could sing along too, and at one point we were literally singing Taylor Swift together. That had to be the best tattooing experience I've had so far! He took time with the shading, and was very meticulous about it, even telling me straight up that shading in black and grey wasn't something he was 100% comfortable on, and it took him longer and he wanted to do it right, but I'm sure glad he did! The piece turned out amazing! I'm absolutely in love with the work, it's artwork I'll never get tired of staring at. Aside from Alex, the shop is filled with awesome people, a standout being Jess! She was floating around the shop, doing her work and occasionally coming over and talking with me and another person being tattooed. Got my ears pierced here and Jessica was the best! Easy to text to schedule with and all my questions during and after.

Well they gave me a time of noon to get a tat.i got there at noon and ended up sitting tere for an hour.during the tat i was very comfortable.billy didn't talk alot but that's ok.i felt comfortable with everyone there.at the end of my tat i was told it would be 300.i handed billy card and tod him to take out 200.he doubled checked with me the amount and again i said 200.he handed me back my card and i gave him a hundred dolor bill.i gave him a 50 tip..on way home i realized they didn't take off my 50 deposit.so i called when i got home.i was checking my credit card and noticed billy took 250 off my card not 200.which is against the law.i called steves and told them about it and they said i had to talk to billy..they didn't seem to care that he took out more then he was suppose to.i then send message on chat for steve.he said he would talk to billy to find out what happened.and i said he didn't have my permission to take that much off my card.well the end result was billy told them 350 for the tat.and he dont know why he took more off card...billy lied to steve he told me 300 for the tat not 350.i then get snapped on by steve after i mentioned a free Tat for the mix up n the fraud of more taken off my card.he basically cared less that his employee ripped me off n it was a crime.told me there sending me money back n they never wanna see me again.steve said i can file charges but ill loose..so there covering up the theft on my credit card. read more

I have gotten all but one of piercings here from Jessica. She is very friendly, always makes sure you're happy and answers all questions. When I got my lobes re-pierced she made sure to spend as much time as she had to in order to line them up perfectly. I would recommend anyone go to her for piercings. read more

From my very first tattoo when I was in college and Steve's was located in a smaller shop on Willy up until last week, I've gotten all of my work done at Steve's. Most recently, I walked in needing someone to show me their artistic creativity, as I was looking for someone to do some work around three older tattoos I had. Enter, Paul. Paul took all of about two seconds to look at my arm and came up with an idea immediately. In the past, other artists would stare at me blankly and have no idea what they could do with my arm. Not Paul. He knew right away what he wanted to do. I liked his confidence, and I decided he was the man for the job. Paul free-handed a design without the use of a stencil. I was really impressed. He was friendly, laid back, and clearly comfortable doing the work. These are the things I look for in the person who is marking me for life. This is the happiest I've ever been with a tattoo. The quality is fantastic, the price was reasonable, and it looks great! I intend to go back to Paul, even though I now live in Chicago, for all of my future work. He's fantastic! read more

I'm almost embarrassed (key word here is 'almost) to admit that the only piercings I have are one on each ear, and that I got them done at Steve's. My first go-round with ear piercing had been at a Claire's in the mall when I was 17. My words of wisdom: Don't trust a teenager with a gun. It was awful and over the course of two years, they were infected constantly and never healed. The holes actually sunk to the bottoms of my earlobes, somehow. I let them close. I got the new ear piercings a few years ago at Steve's. The lady there was nice, efficient and professional. Everything was very sterile, as you might hope at a tattoo and piercing parlor. They used stainless steel hoops which lent themselves to the healing process immensely (and were cute and fashionable). I healed very quickly and didn't get all disgusting and infecty. Plus, they gave me a bumper sticker and key chain! Woohoo, prizes! read more

While this shop is somewhat aesthetically pleasing in that it's clean, sterile and semi-decorated, the artists employed there are what turned me off. I gave this shop a few tries, as to not be biased upon a single visit. Of the 4 times I've been in, at least one person has been on their phone texting or playing on Facebook, which is fine during downtime but not when there's a line of eager and paying customers. The majority of the attitudes are blunt and rude, similar to someone who seems simply burned out on the job and trying to get through the days. (Not the attitude I'd want when having permanent art applied to my body.) Piercing is average. While the physical piercings usual turn out alright, on more than one occasion the jewelry has been overpriced by comparison to other shops (and online dealers), and once I had to pay for another piece of jewelry after being given the wrong kind. (No refund or return, I had to pay for both pieces for their mistake.) The only real positive attribute to come out of this is that I met a few of the employees from Spikomatic. I've been going here now for a few years, never had a complaint and love their work. In summary: Steve's is an 'ok' shop for simplistic art, tattoos, and piercings, but I'd look elsewhere for exemplary customer service or more serious work. read more

First off, I'm quite disappointed and surprised with the low rating here on yelp. It's a really neat place with very talented artists. I love Steve's. I've gotten two ear piercings (daith and tragus) and a tattoo there. I left each time feeling good about my experience and my new mod. The piercer, Michael, is especially wonderful. He's really nice and is very good at what he does. Even when the place is packed, he is calm and it makes the piercing experience go even smoother. My tattoo was done by Andy. He drew up an awesome design for me and the end result was exactly what I wanted. I should also mention that they are SUPER clean. New sterilized needles for every customer, the area is sprayed down with microbicidal spray before and after every tattoo/piercing, disposable ink caps for tattoos, etc. Everything that EVERY studio should be doing. Definitely check out Steve's if you're looking for a new mod. They know what they're doing and are super helpful when it comes to answering any and all questions. read more

Takes a bit to line up the tongs for a septum piercing but hey I have one nostril bigger then the other. Rather it be straight then off. Next up a tattoo. read more

I went to Steve's with good expectations. Heard mostly good things about the tattoos done there. Had just got paid and went in for a walk in around 8pm after calling in. Long story short the artist seemed tired/ lethargic, did some of the lettering crooked, and didn't completely fill in some of the letters. Didn't notice till much later due to the wrap. Paid $150.00 plus a $50.00 tip. Really regret it. Was a very simplistic tattoo. Not sure where the problem came up. Will not be going here again. read more

Pretty affordable pricing, but our artist did not know what he was doing, even after 4 years of doing it. Came in the shop after calling in a couple hours ahead of time with my girlfriend and one other friend. My friend figured out what he wanted fairly quickly and went first. His went fairly smoothly, only taking about 20ish minutes to get done. When it came to me and my girlfriend's, we had created our own idea, and we were told it was impossible. The amount of detail was apparently too much. Even though I have seen very similar tattoos with the same amount or even more detail than our idea. He was pretty rude and informal when talking through the details. My girlfriend got in the chair first. Our artist engaged in a thought-provoking conversation with her the whole time, and gave me short, unenthusiastic responses when I contributed. Her tattoo was finished pretty easily. Then it was my turn. He cleaned off all the equipment and changed gloves, keeping everything sanitary. Then he went to redraw the stencil. When he came back, I noticed that one of the circles (that's supposed to be the same size as another circle in the tattoo) and told him it didn't look the right size. He had to measure with his stencil before he realized it was the wrong size. He got through my tattoo, mostly talking with my girlfriend. After we got done, he told us all of the wrong steps for tattoo care. He recommended very harmful tattoo care products. After the our first time getting the tattoo, mine scabbed up really bad, to the point it had a leathery texture, even though I was taking care of it exactly how my artist said to. Over time, the scab ripped in a few spots, and when the tattoo healed completely, there were lines of no ink in the tattoo. They did have a free touch up for a year, so we went in to get ours fixed. Mine was the worst, but my girlfriend's did lose some ink. While he was doing my tattoo, the pain was worse than normal. Almost like he was tattooing my muscle. After the touch up, my tattoo healed the same exact way, but held ink a little better than the first time. Before and after the touch up, I had multiple artists look at how my tattoo healed. They've told me it looks like he tattooed to deep, and it felt that way too. My muscle was sore for weeks after the tattoo and I was extremely dissatisfied. Don't waste your time, money, or skin at this shop. They are unprofessional and rude. read more

Let me just start off by saying that the experience here was fantastic. If you're someone who just reads the first sentence that's all you need to know other than I would highly recommend working with Alex. I came in with a vision of what I wanted but not necessarily with a vision of how I wanted it done. Alex was super chill and made the experience extremely good. Not only was he great with his customer skills he is an amazing artist. He drew up what I wanted, and I truly captured everything I was looking for. He asked questions trying to make sure that it was right for me. He gave me a little bit of guidance to help lead me away from some potential misguided notions about what I wanted, but he did it in a nice and pleasant way. I will recommend Steve's and especially Alex to anyone and everyone who asks me about my tattoo and tell them about the awesome service that was offered. My aunt recommended this place to me a bit ago because she had gone there and it was so worth the 2 hour drive! I got two flat helix's done earlier today and it went amazing! Jessica was very professional and confident yet acted friendly, making me feel comfortable and relaxed. She talked me through breathing exercises and throughly explained what was going to happen before she did anything. Jessica also contacted me beforehand and texted lots of information and discussed with me my options before I went which was greatly appreciated. She even told me I didn't have the right type of ear for the first piercing I wanted so she's definitely very passionate about what she does and she wants to make sure she does it right and has the customers best interest in mind, which I'm thankful for -- I love my new piercings and I'm glad she opened my eyes to all of the alternative options. She scheduled a follow-up appointment to make sure the healing process is going good as well. I was also given a piece of paper with lots of simple and easy to understand instructions about the healing process and what to avoid, which also I appreciate. She used a needle and was very clean and quick with everything, and was very considerate of if I needed to calm down or sit down for a second. The prices were a bit higher than I was expecting but it's definitely worth it as it's high quality materials, and everything is included in it too. Steve's is an amazing tattoo shop. From the time I walked in for the first time, until my tattoo was done my experience was nothing but positive. To start off, I got my tattoo by Lenny, a great guy who is great at traditional tattoos. He was as excited as I was about the tattoo which was great. He paid extra special attention to his work (even when I didn't want him to because of the pain LOL), took his time, and did a perfect job. This shop has a great friendly vibe to it, not stuck up at all. whether it be your first tattoo or your 18th, Steve's is a great shop with great artists to go to if you are in madison. read more

Five stars without a question. I lived in Madison for a year doing campaign work and was looking to get a half sleeve done. I asked around and everyone said Steve's on Willy, so I walked in. I looked at everyone's portfolios and asked to meet Paul, who is the sweetest man in the tattoo world in my opinion. I brought a comic book and had shown him a few images of Ms. Marvel that I had been considering...then he got this great idea to do a panel half sleeve. I selected some of the images and he selected some images and compiled the amazing artwork on my arm. He contributed his ideas and skills. I was charged $400 which is ultra cheap...it took me 4 hours and I got it all done in one sitting. We took a break only once and it was for him! I appreciated his dedication and the amazing work I now have for the rest of my life. I recommend this place to any and every one. Even if you are in Milwaukee, it is worth the drive. read more

I went to Steve's to get my nose pierced in 2007. They were professional, I didn't feel rushed, and everything was sterile. However, about six months later I had to get it re-pierced (it closed up in a matter of hours), and my experience the second time around was awful. The woman doing it was clearly new, very unprofessional. She was gabbing to her friend the whole time, and I felt that she wasn't 100% paying attention to the needle she was about to stick through my face. She did not put me at ease or make me feel comfortable. At all. I would recommend Blue Lotus (on State Street) before Steve's. read more

I came here for my first cartilage piercing-I was worried about the pain and of course the infection, but it was nothing like that at all! Jes (Jessica) was extremely reassuring, even in unspoken ways. For example, when she directed me to pick up the mirror by myself because she had fresh gloves on. Sanitary to a T! She was careful to place it right, and the piercing itself took no time and almost wasn't painful at all. I got a packet of sea salt and some antibacterial soap, some excellent explanations, my hoop and some good old peace of mind for $55. Worth it. My tattoo is beautiful. The artistry really is wonderful, but the customer service was beyond horrible. Never in my life would I treat a person the way we were treated here. I will NEVER go back. If you don't want to do walk-In appointments, don't advertise them. Don't say one thing when someone calls on a Monday and then completely deny what you said when we show up on Saturday for a walk-in tattoos. We still stuck with it and waited patiently for our walk-in appointments - one at a time. Yes. There was a SMALL group of us. We were commerating a very tragic event in my our group. And we were made to feel completely unwanted and as though we were a huge burden. imagine how it feels to sit and listen to the front desk person complain about you to the person who just finished doing your tattoo. Or having the person doing your tattoo not say one word to you throughout the whole process until the end when you look him in the eye to say thank you and he HAS to respond. And then listen to the pretentious comments about people just choosing whatever image they want from Pintrest - no meaning behind it....after you showed him the image you chose from Pintrest. And I can guarantee that tattoo had a VERY significant and tragic meaning. But not once did anyone talk to us like we were people. If you're thinking about coming here for a tattoo - I STRONGLY urge you to reconsider. read more

I have to wonder why Steve's has walk in hours when they very clearly do NOT appreciate walk ins. I called earlier in the week to make sure that my group of friends and I could come in as walk ins. I talked to two different employees and both assured me that if we got there when they first opened on Saturday, they would be able to make it work. So we show up and wait for them to open. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that we were NOT welcome. We tried to explain our situation and what we wanted and we were told "Well since you're determined to sit here and get tattooed today, I might as well get you the paperwork." Excuse me?? Do you think we drove over here and waited for an hour and a half before you opened, to NOT be tattooed?? This was a very important experience for all of us. It was not just for fun and games. We each had gone through a traumatic or difficult situation and this was part of our healing; it's why we worked hard to make it happen. But from the moment we walked in, all we were meet with was resistance, rudeness, and pretentious behavior. Two of us were told that our ideas were too elaborate and that we had to scale it down significantly. And one of us was actually told that her idea was basically stupid and that "this is a tattoo, not a painting" "watercolors are dumb and we don't even know how they are going to hold up over the years". I was made to feel like I was ignorant because I wanted my tattoo to face me. I know that it's considered "backwards" (I'm not a tattoo virgin) but I don't care if others can see it, I needed to be able to see it when I looked at it. It's why I chose the area on my body that I did. This tattoo was for me to see; not for the world to see. But apparently that was "wrong" and "you're the customer paying money to do something wrong, put it where you want". Well, thank you, random tattoo guy, I think I will. Then came the actual tattoos. My husband's went pretty well and it turned out fantastic!! That was the last of any good attitude that we received. While waiting another hour for the next of us to go (we were the only walk ins that day), we were whispered about and blatantly laughed at by the employees. At last I was seated in the chair, and my artist Billy did not utter one word to me except "lift your foot". This was the most painful tattoo I have ever experienced and he had an annoyed look on his face the entire time. And no I did not scream or cry (again I'm not a tattoo virgin; I've got 16) but I couldn't keep my foot and leg as still as I would have liked because I was in such intense pain. Thankfully it didn't take too long. My tattoo came out beautifully and I adore it but the way I was treated soured the whole experience. By the time I was done, it was clear to everyone that they just wanted us out of there. We weren't being loud and disruptive. We weren't being disrespectful. We simply wanted tattoos and professional, courteous treatment. The last two of us to get inked were treated in almost the same exact fashion- again one of them being completely ignored by her artist Ronnie. He didn't say a word to her. In fact, he actually got up and walked away for awhile, while she was still laying on his table, and didn't explain where he was going. Any questions or ideas were met with sneers and mocking tones. By the time we left, almost 11 hours and several hundred dollars later, we were quite disgruntled about the way we had been treated. The artistry of the tattoos were wonderful but the atmosphere was hostile, negative and rude. I loathed handing over my money to jerks. I will NOT be doing that again. Our whole group felt the same way. (And this was the third tattoo I had gotten at Steve's.) [Side note: we have done this same thing before, at Ultimate Arts Tattoo on their walk in day. It was ten times busier and twenty times better. It was the single best tattoo experience I have ever had. They were so kind and understanding and funny and brash.] Yes it's a tattoo parlor and not a department store- of course they have to be hardcore and badass. But that doesn't mean that they have to be assholes. I won't ever go back to Steve's Tattoo and I will never recommend them again. And I've recommended them a lot in the past. read more
