As weird as it sounds, I love visiting Stewart's Shops when I'm in upstate NY. This convenient store chain is well, convenient and they have lots of locations. We stopped on our way home to this location but this was my insanely busy. There was a long line and only one cashier managing two cash registers. She was so friendly and nice even though it was a stressful environment. Everything was well stocked mid-day with a lot of options. This is the Best Stewart's gas and food shop in Chestertown. Gas is pretty inexpensive. All the food is on sale. Great deals on ice cream, hot dogs, soda, egg nog, beers and pantry foods. There are about 8-10 pumps up front with plenty of space for cars towing boats, jet skis and winter sport equipment like skidoos and skis. The Stewart's staff was pretty amiable and helpful. Even the long lines were no big deal as people were friendly, even talking to strangers and tourists! It is a very large Stewarts with all sorts of isles for anything your household or travel plans could require. Visitors were purchasing ice creams, racks of beer, cigarettes, soda, lottery and food. I went into this store with my wife's younger brother. When I got to the register, I asked for a pack of cigarettes and the woman at the counter said she would need to see BOTH of our IDs. I am 38 years old, he is 17 years old. They would not sell a pack of cigarettes to me, an adult, because I was WITH my 17 year old brother in law. Ok, fine.. I got back in the car and drove 7miles back to house to drop him off and then back to the store alone. When I got back into the store they STILL refused to sell me a pack of cigarettes because I WAS with a 17 year old. They told me that they "would not sell me cigarettes today" and to "go elsewhere or come back tomorrow". These sad women unfortunately do not know the law and make up nonsensical policies on the spot to give people a hard time. It was ridiculous, another customer told me in the parking lot that they never heard of this policy and they were just "busting your b*lls for no reason". I went to Crossroads and got my cigarettes (along with $30 worth of gas in my car) without an issue. My lawyer will be in touch with their corporate office. This was embarrassing, insulting, and unnecessary. In the time of Covid 19, you would think they would be more interested in getting customers in and out, rather than creating more stress for people for no reason. read more

Order a buffalo chicken ranch pizza pie at this shop. It is PHENOMENAL. Seriously, get it. You won't regret it. I was pleasantly surprised. However, I would not recommend the pizza or other food already cooked and on display under hot lamps. read more

Honestly as far as a gas station/convenience store goes, I do not have anything negative to say about this Stewart's Shop location. I read somewhere that this was one of the busiest locations in the franchise, and I can believe it. I am constantly up in the area, and everytime I drive by, it is always packed with people. Everytime I have been inside, the employees are friendly, and patient even though they are swamped with tourists and locals. Julie doesn't know what the hell she is saying. Stewarts is after all a gas station/convenience store/ice cream shop. I wouldn't expect a five star bathroom but it has always been neat when I've used it. I've been going there a long as its been open and have always had friendly service. The night staff is wretched..The woman with blonde hair that has been there for quite sometime is consistently been rude and unpleasant. I live down the road and am a loyal Stewart's customer she treats me as if I am a nuisance rather than a neighbor. The morning staff is the complete opposite pleasant and attentive. The place looks like a bomb went off as far as cleanliness. The bathroom, disgusting. If you walk in and you haven't paid for your gas within two minutes, some woman starts screaming like a banshee across the store demanding to know who has such and such amount in gas. Here's a hint, if the car is still at the gas pump, they haven't left yet. Heaven forbid you're not done shopping. Turns out when I asked it was the manager Vicky. She's about as pleasant as a rabid badger. I try to avoid the place if possible, only pluses are the non-ethanol high test gas and the milk card. I try to go to Schroon Lake though, the manager isn't a shrieking shrew there. read more
