Let's talk…read moreabout a beautiful historic intimate location in the heart of downtown Savannah with the charm and sophisticated architecture that an elegant event would bring. The Room at Common is top notch and believe me there is absolutely nothing common here. Let's give a moment of respect to the Executive Head Chef Shawn and his entire accompanying staff whose impeccable attention to detail in every dish that exited his kitchen demonstrated the depth and ability of everyone who had a hand in slicing, cutting, baking, and curating the most delectable dishes I have found in quite a while. You need an outlandish charcuterie board to get you in the mood to begin the eating festival. The sliders had the perfect texture and the bread was tenderly placed with a delicate sauce. The tomato basil soup in a bread bowl was like heaven. The fried green tomatoes were also a favorite. The short ribs with the smothered collard greens and the cornbread were on an another planet of goodness. You want fresh local oysters on the half shelf pulled from the water only hours ago, well they got you right in house with them lying on ice and a professional shucker right there to serve you with a beautiful smile. Did I mention the dessert bar? Freshly baked cookies, macaroons, mini red velvet cake shooters, lemon puff pastries, mini cheesecakes, and other treats that would leave the sweetest sweet tooth, toothless. The food was Southern, but wound up a notch. It was not boring. It was not common. If you're in Savannah for a work conference or need a place to meet to discuss business with your team, host a holiday party, or have a small wedding reception, do not skip The Room at Common. One thing I appreciate is how attentive the staff is to each guest. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. You feel as if you're one of the family coming to visit. The cocktails are delicious. The wine selection is fantastic and carefully crafted with an experienced sommelier in house. I'm telling you that you will kick yourself if you don't have you people call Leah Ralph to book your event. The food and drinks will make your folks love you forever!

We were looking for a small, intimate, and beautiful space to host our micro-wedding celebration, and after reaching out to many places in downtown Savannah, The Room at Common stood out immediately. When we did our site visit, it was exactly what we had envisioned and more. The space is beautifully decorated inside a historic Savannah building and offers thoughtful features like a Frame TV for slides or welcome messages, private restrooms, a private bar, and the ability to play your own music (which is rare for a small venue and comes without extra charges). Leah was wonderful to work with throughout the entire process. She responded to our initial inquiry almost immediately, something that really stood out since many other venues took days or even weeks to reply. From the first email to the site visit and all the communication leading up to the event, she was incredibly helpful and reassuring. As someone who works in hospitality and tends to be a bit of a "controller," it meant a lot to feel confident that everything was in good hands. On the day of our celebration, everything was beyond what we imagined. The space looked beautiful, and we were greeted so warmly. Sammy, our server, was attentive and fun, and the bartender was fantastic as well. And the food... absolutely incredible. Every dish exceeded expectations. Our guests are still talking about it weeks later. The oysters were incredibly fresh, the steak was outstanding, and the fried cornbread, fish dip, and cheesecake were unforgettable. A huge thank you to the Executive Chef (who even came out to greet us) and the entire kitchen team. Every member of the team made us feel cared for and ensured we had everything we needed. They truly embody the meaning of Southern hospitality. Thank you all for making our day so special. My husband and I already say that if we ever renew our vows or host another celebration, we'll absolutely be coming back.

I just had to let you know. The atmosphere at your venue was simple, but beautiful. Everything was set up and ready when we arrived. The food was super yummy and I went for two helpings! Not to mention two helpings of dessert as well! I was most impressed with the staff who waited on us. They were so very attentive, especially to the bride-to-be. I wish I had asked for their names as they were on-point during our whole event. Every drink was filled and refilled, the food station was carefully watched to keep it neat, and they even helped with carrying the gifts and picking up the wrapping paper. They made the bride-to-be feel like a queen! I walked out with a smile on my face to see such good service (oh, and I took a salted-caramel brownie for the ride home)! Well done Venue 1223! Any event I have, you'll be first on my list to host! Many thanks for the most enjoyable day!

The outdoor area was nicely lit for the holidays. They set up only 1 bar with 2 bartenders to handle over 60 people. They did a pretty good job keeping up. The credit card charges show Downtown Deli as the business owner and not Venue 1223 (probably owned by Downtown Deli). The food was pretty good. They had people serving Hors D'oeuvres which were a charcuterie in a cup, spring rolls, chicken, etc. The main course was either chicken, beef or specialty vegetarian dish which my wife ordered. It was basically a power bowl and looked pretty good with long strips of portabella mushrooms over salad with lots of quinoa and vegetables. My chicken was a bit dry and tough. The inside is a large open area for tables, a DJ and a dance floor. The staff was friendly and did a great job keeping food and people moving.

READ THE CONTRACT, IT IS UNETHICAL…read more TL;DR: Red Gate will charge you full price if you cancel even if they book the date you cancel. I come from a journalism and legal communications background, so I want to be sure that I am stating the facts as clearly and accurately as possible. My fiance and I visited Red Gate in late February to tour the place for our early October wedding. We loved it, and the individual who gave us the tour was incredibly kind and answered our questions. My fiance was especially excited by the fact that there was a miniature donkey available to help serve drinks. That's somewhat important for later. We did a soft hold for an October 9 wedding, but we were told we only had a few days to make a decision since October is an extremely popular month. We had toured another venue that same day that was well outside our budget range, while Red Gate seemed pretty affordable, so we agreed. A few weeks into searching out their recommended vendors was a stressful period of time, especially for my fiance. The vendors were quoting MORE than we were paying for the venue, and my fiance was becoming more and more distressed about the ballooning prices. Given complex family situations, we knew we'd have to foot most of the bill. The straw that broke the camel's back was when we spoke to a coordinator. Red Gate does NOT allow outside coordinators; they have a select list of vendors from whom you can choose, and that's it. The vendor we talked to was more than double the price of the venue, and we were quickly outside of our budget range that we had stated to our tour guide at Red Gate (the vendor was also going to charge for the donkey, which my fiance and I both thought we heard the tour guide say was included in the venue rental price). Since Red Gate does not allow outside coordinators, we sadly had to cancel. Red Gate tried to offer us a different date, but given that we have to move across the country shortly after our wedding for my job, we couldn't flex it. We toured and booked in February and canceled in late April. Which is plenty of time to rebook the October date that we were assured is the busiest time of the year and there was already someone else asking about that date. During the cancellation discussions, we found out that the contract specifies that there is no refund for cancelling. So, Red Gate has the audacity to charge us thousands of dollars for a service we are not going to use at all, a service that we ultimately decided is cheaper to cancel than to continue on, and a service they've probably already double-dipped on at this point. To say this is unethical is an understatement. I feel some responsibility on my part for not carefully looking through the contract, but we were excited and felt a little rushed being informed that someone else was asking about the date. The most Red Gate offered was to cancel the alcohol deposit, which goes a small way, but the right, human action to do would be to refund the whole amount seeing as how we are not going to use any of it. This is disappointing and shady behavior. I'm all too happy to delete this review should Red Gate contact me and offer a refund, but given that they've baked this into their contract, I'm not getting my hopes up.
