Initially when I ordered happy hour nachos, I quietly had the waitress replace the dirty dish. Then they show a Creme Brule on the desert menu that looks like a good Creme Brule toasted perfect with berries, instead they deliver a cup with a cremated topping. I requested it be removed. I ordered a chocolate martini in its place by time it came everyone was ready to go. However they charged full price for happy hour margaritas even though I asked for that to be fixed and then I noticed I was charged full price for the nachos that was ordered off the happy hour menu. Went here for lunch a couple of days ago. Did not know what to expect being new in town. Tex-Mex not my favorite, but still had a solid meal. Ordered the blackened salmon tacos. Good portion of fish prepared well. Lots of toppings and a hefty serving of black beans and rice. Overall nice ambiance, friendly staff, and not too over priced. Had dinner with friends here last night. Food was great, service was great! Our waiter was super attentive and funny! We really enjoyed bantering with him. Our drinks were never empty! Never understood why people like this place. The menu looks great on paper but the execution just isnt there to pull it off. Service has been egh each time but this weekend was the worst. We left after drinks and apps because Kevin our server was such a rude arrogant prick we couldnt stand to give him or his employer any money. Here's his lines from the night: Us - Do you have any specials? (We knew they did because the jolly lumberjack server at the table next to us showed one to us arbitrarily as he ran it to his peeps) Kevun - Um, they're right there pointing to chalkboard on wall. (He did read them after we all looked at each other like wtf) Me while ordering apps - I don't how we'll handle the bill but we're a couple, they're a couple, and those two are separate. I love this place. It is really close to my office and is actually where I had my first lunch with my colleagues on my first day. Every time I get the chance to take work visitors to lunch, this is the spot I choose. I've even eaten lunch here all alone. 1st time today, I got the habanero fettuccine. Says it's hot and it is but not a uncomfortable hot a YES this delicious and SPICEY. Will ask for extra sauce next time. I got the quesa to go and the beef and mushroom (minus mush.) for boyfriend and he really liked it and took claim on the queso. The waitress was nice and everyone was friendly, felt like a friends house. My son did get the burger(only thing he eats) and was burnt in places, they understood and remade and it was much better. Nice building. Good location. Friendly staff and excellent waiter. Disappointing food quality and value. Chicken in a salad was overcooked and dry-as-ash. Shrimp tacos came with off-putting rice and beans, overcooked rubbery shrimp. Appetizer was over-seasoned to the point of being inedible. Seasoning of everything seemed amateurish and inconsistent. The preparation and seasoning practices make this place a food experience not to be repeated. One of my go-to restaurant choices, but I have never given them the glowing review they deserve. Lunches and dinners at Stokes, for me, have never disappointed. For the purpose of this review, I'll focus on reviewing the lunch I just enjoyed, minutes ago. To begin with, our waitress was wonderful. She was attentive but not hovering. If anything, she could have returned to us sooner, but I think she read us correctly; we were having a great time chatting and never really picked up our menus (we are both frequent Stokes visitors). After debating between my staple, the Cabo San Taco (heavenly) and the Wrapped Fire (new, sounds intriguing), I decided to stick with what I knew since I had to be attentive the rest of the day. Work, ya know? I will be trying the Wrapped Fire the next time I go back. Gotta love habanero. That being said, the Cabo San Taco has a wonderful, smokey, light kick to it. I 100% recommend it. I have been to Stokes a few times over the years and have really enjoyed the food, however tonight was not the same. The service was pretty good for being as busy as it was. He was friendly and patient. My sister ordered a filet mignon medium rare it came out medium well and the cut was terrible more like a tiny sirloin shriveled to nothing. My mom ordered the Good For You Salad and added salmon. She chose this salad because the menu description didn't have anything she would have to omit, however there were about a 3/4 cup of raisins, not mentioned. She spent about 15 mins picking them all out as she cannot eat the sugar, the salmon was so over cooked, it was like a crunchy piece of leather and the kale was soggy and wilted. The manger came over right away to apologize after we complained to the waiter and gave a discount on the total bill for their meals. No offense but both meals should have probably been compted as all my sister ate was the steamed veggies and half the mashed potatoes and my mom barley ate any of her salad or salmon as she had to pick through most of it to find a few good pieces. My niece and I had the same Chicken Alfredo Pasta was just ok. They ate the food because they were so hungry and the waiter was so busy that we would have waited even longer for them to eat if we sent it back and started over. I used to be a huge stokes fan. Not sure if it is me or the restaurant. I think I am just making bad choices these days. Tried the Aztec Nacho's. Terrible. Friend had the Ya Ya spicy sausage tacos. They were spicy and tasty but just good.. Another friend had the tilapia and it was tasty also but again.... just good. We had a couple of Marg's.... I liked mine but friend thought it was "too syrupy" and sweet. They wouldnt serve one of my friends because he didnt bring his ID. Not a big deal and nobody got upset but was kinda strange because we obviously look older. So I guess he should take it as a compliment! Service was excellent and the atmosphere fine. Walking in at 6:20pm I was asked if I had more people coming I said "Yes, two more just checking to make sure they aren't here already", she said "Well there is no one here" I thought to myself wow that isn't something I would announce so loud and proud. I got seated, offered a drink and menus. The booth was clean and the rest of the restaurant looked good too. I did not use the restroom. My grandmother ordered the "SALMON CHOPPED SALAD Chilled chopped salmon, pico de gallo, oven-roasted corn, baby spinach, toasted pumpkin seed, sundried tomato cous cous and cotija cheese with pesto-buttermilk dressing 14.95" She cannot eat spicy food and made the waitress very aware of that so she asked how spicy the pico is and the waitress stated it was not spicy at all. I being a cook know pico has jalapeno in it but she works there and I am sure she knows the menu better than me. The salad arrives and it is a huge pile of spinach leaves with the rest of the fixings as stated on the menu looking just thrown together (presentation was horrible). As predicted the pico was spicy and the dressing was even spicier. We sent it back got a new salad without pico and ranch dressing instead. My grandmother also had "ROASTED CORN CHOWDER Sweet corn, fresh vegetables, white wine and touch of cream. Cup 4.50 | Bowl 5.95" She said it was excellent! My mother (in from out of town and also celebrating her birthday) had "BRISKET TACOS Slow roasted brisket, sesame soy vinaigrette, slaw, cilantro mayo, guacamole, beans and rice. 12.25" she was very pleased with her meal. I had "WOOD-GRILLED CHICKEN BREAST With seasonal veggies and rice, choice of adobo chile, barbecue or garlic cream sauce. 15.65 | LUNCH 11.65 (11-2)". The chicken was already sliced on the plate which made me mad; why slice up a good chicken breast let all the juices come out and dry it up. In my opinion the kitchen did this to ensure it was cooked all the way. Yes it was dry but did have good flavor. The rice was slightly under cooked but also had good flavor. The veggies which consisted of yellow squash, zucchini, red bell pepper, green bell pepper and broccoli was cooked perfectly but WAY over salted. I could even feel the crunch of salt on my teeth it was horrible. For my sauce I chose the garlic cream sauce it was lumpy, tasted very bland and had a strong flavor of flour. In addition I asked if they could add sautéed mushroom to my meal. It turned out to be a mushroom gravy that comes on another dish which was "STEAK AND MUSHROOM ENCHILADA Tender brisket, rich mushroom stew, ancho chile sauce and jack cheese. 18.95 | LUNCH 11.95 (11-2)". Sautéed mushrooms are cooked in oil/butter they are not "rich mushroom stew". The manager even told us they don't have plain mushrooms to make sautéed mushrooms; then why tell me you have them or explain what you do have especially when I will have to pay extra for it. After speaking with the manager and receiving a free slice of "GERMAN CHOCOLATE CHEESE CAKE; not listed on their menu" our bill went from $59 to $32. I decided to take the chicken home as a treat for my dogs. We handed the waitress a $20 gift card and a credit card to pay the bill. She returned with $32 receipt the whole bill was put on the credit card. We waited for 5 minutes she returned we advised her this is a gift card she said "Oh I thought it was some sort of rewards card" I was thinking she really doesn't know what she is doing here OR she is new. After it is all said and done I don't think we will be returning. Although they did offer to remake or make me something else I chose not too and it is disappointing leaving a restaurant hungry. read more

Atmosphere was warm and cozy. Smells good walking through the door. We ordered the guacamole which was a "favorite" item on the menu. The guac came out that brownish green color that avocado gets when it sits out a while, which was disappointing. The plate also had a spicy green salsa and a sweet ish red salsa. I prefer spicy salsa so I went for the green, which had a good taste but was really watery, which made getting it to my mouth with enough of the actual salsa in it a bit of a balancing act. For the entree I got the tacos carbon which was okay. It's a build your own taco kind of deal which is meh for me...same green salsa as the guac, black beans, texmex rice (which was undercooked) and of course fajita steak chunks. 5/10 for tacos carbon. My wife got the deviled eggs that came out very well plated, looked a bit like they were going for fine dining. She didn't complain about the taste so I guess they were good. I truly don't get why this place doesn't sport a 4-star average. Looking through the reviews, I think some folks have been a bit harsh. Here is a tip... if you don't like the meal, don't eat it! Tell your server and I will bet they give you a different item. That may happen more often here, as the flavors are bold. Case in point... I had the Johnny's Big Plate. First there was a chicken & cheese chile relleno. They do the Relleno in a corn batter instead of an egg batter. There is your twist. I liked the crispness of it. Second, a steak & mushroom enchilada. This was covered with an incredible ancho chili enchilada sauce. Spectacular. Hints of cinnamon, earthy, spicy. I have a recipe for anyone who wants to try this at home. Hit me up. : ) Finally, Sharon's Enchilada. A chicken enchilada covered with cheese and dressed with a guacamole sauce and one other delectable drizzle. Just mouth watering. The rice and beans were also more tasty than the average joint. Not Impressed! I tried to go here for lunch a few weeks ago, but they screwed up our reservation. I have to say I was very disappointed with this restaurant. I heard good things, but I don't think I will be going back any time soon even though this place is in my neighborhood. Our service was extremely slow - took a while to get drinks and then took a while to get our order in. When we finally did place our order, someone's soup was forgotten, dinner took forever one person's steak was undercooked, my plate was really hot because it was in the over (i.e. was ready way before everyone else's, so they had to hold it for a long time). it was also really drafty where we were sitting. We eat Stokes TWO to THRE times a week, have for YEARS... We order heavy on take out or when we dine in and enjoy leftovers warmed up in the toaster oven or broiler on our range. We alway get AZTEC NACHOS with extra AZTEC sauce and INNER-BEAUTY (absolutely the best hot sauce known to man)! Our next addiction is the Johnny's Big Plate... Beef and Chicken Enchilada and some of the best slow cooked pork in Omaha inside a poblano pepper. Stokes guacamole is also fantastic! The other favorite dish is the Mayan Fire... Linguine with a perfect Mayan spicy sauce toped with a fire gilled chicken, garnished with jalapeño cornbread... This is served on top of a tortilla shell that I always use at the end to make a little burrito out of the leftovers to finish a great meal! We travel a lot so we almost always get the AZTEC-NACHOS togo when leaving town and if Stokes is open when we return, we always stop on our way home!! We DINE IN about 50% of the time and the staff, decor and environment is always top shelf. We live out West so Stokes West gets about 80% of our business and the Old Market Stokes gets 20%... Both STOKES locations have fantastic Bloody Mary buffets on Sundays from Open to about 2:00PM! HOT TIP: Use the INNER BEAUTY in your Bloody Mary, it is LIFE CHANGING!!! We eat at the bar a lot and they always seem to find great personality bartenders! We often take our employees to both Stokes locations after work and the staff is always super accommodating! We have been hooked on Stokes since it first opened in Miracle Hills Plaza and will likely eat Stokes for the rest of our lives, they simply fit our sweet spot perfectly!!! Well I previously did a review of poor because the surf and turf was very small and cost 45 dollars. I was very disappointed and I talked to the manager and he did refund my meal. But I do not suggest the surf and turf what so ever. Hardly any steak and 2 pieces of lobster that were very small also. Then the manager John replied to my first review and said I was using racial slurs to his waiter. Once upon a time, I would've given this place four stars. Used to love the tacos al carbon. Once flavorful and tender, now bland and tough. Usually: the place is inconsistent. A number of other things I really liked have long since left the menu. Such is the way of all things, I suppose. Meanwhile, the food's not too bad, but if you want a mildly pretentious evening sipping wines and you're not expecting anything special in the way of food, this may be your place. Now let me vent about something that's always stuck in my craw: Queso Fundido, a simple little phrase for a simple little dish that simply means "melted cheese." It's a bowl of melted cheese with maybe a little of this or that in it. Queso Fundido. Melted cheese. Everywhere I've ever eaten it, and I've eaten it many times. I like cheese, you see. Imagine my surprise, then, when I unwittingly ordered the queso fundido at Stokes. It's a bowl of beans with a thin layer of cheese on it. Yes, I'm serious. It is, in other words, what is known throughout the entire rest of the country as a "bean dip." Nothing worse than a bowl of beans when you had your (rapidly clogging) heart set on a bowl of decadent melted cheese. I made this point to the owners once a couple of years ago. Didn't even make a dent in their self-confident fantasy world where "queso fundido" means "bowl of warm beans with a veneer of cheese." I'm going to go pound my head against a wall now. read more

We've really liked Stokes--the food and atmosphere. Good salsa is hard to find in Omaha, and this is the best we have found on the west side of town. They give you a red and a green. Both are delish! The most memorable dish we have enjoyed was the mussels. Very tasty! But so far, we've enjoyed everything we have ordered. We will continue coming back and trying new things! read more

Okay, I'm going to write the review for the Stokes that I knew and loved. Not the one that is there today. There are/were a number of really good things on the menu such as Sharon's Enchiladas, Taco's Carbon, Mayan Fire Linguine and the Cabo San Taco. If you hit it on a good night these can still be good, though consistency is their big issue now - especially expanding downtown. I also find that they tend to put too much cinnamon and/or nutmeg into some of their dishes which tends to overpower some of the flavors. Couple of lesser known items to try. Try the nachos with the Beans, Chorizo, Steak, Chicken and Pico de Gallo added on (it only comes with beans or chorizo). You have to order it special - and most times they forget at least one of the items which blows my mind. This is a great meal for two with a couple margarita's. In fact, most times the wait staff that brings it out talks about how good it looks and they need to try that sometime. Fire Shrimp is also good appetizer to get. Good seasoning on the Shrimp - though not sure you need a tortilla with it. 3 years ago I found Stokes and it was a nice local restaurant that served really good food. Since then it has become really inconsistent and the dishes have morphed into sloppy renditions of some of my favorites. Sharon's enchiladas - what happened? We stopped in for a late lunch and ordered Sharon's enchiladas. In the past, these have been amazing and spot on every time, as I'd say we have been to this restaurant multiple times in the past for the same dish. Today they were dry. No sauce or no cheese inside. Just shredded chicken. So, not the usual dish and didn't meet our expectations. Very disappointing. We politely asked our server, who had the manager stop by. We showed her the uneaten portion of the enchilada, expressing how we thought it was different, and gently asked, 'Has the recipe for Sharon's enchiladas changed? - this is different from what we've had in the past.' The manager started getting fidgety and said, 'Nope, the recipe has not changed for over 20 years'. Poking apart the enchilada, we said, 'ok, see here, there is no sauce inside - just shredded chicken'. Then she ignored us and said, 'ok - Is there anything else I can answer for you? Then the manager just turned around and walked away. Maybe they were dry because it was 3pm in the afternoon? Why didn't ask if she could remake it for us? Why didn't make an adjustment to our bill to OR take the cost of the incorrectly made dish off? Not sure why the question was so awkward to the manager. But whatever it was, it was a strange experience. Yesterday my wife and I had the unfortunate experience of going to Stokes Grill & Bar West. My wife likes steak, she ordered the Tenderloin. Although she told me that it tasted good, there was not much steak there at all for $24.95. When the waiter brought out her dinner I actually had to ask where the next plate was for her steak, because a couple of french fries had fallen over on the maybe less than 4oz steak and covered it up. They claimed that it was 5-6oz but it was literally smaller than 3 of my fingers. That is what she got 3 small slivers of meat that looked like they belonged on the inside of a tortilla. We will not be going back to this restaurant. The day before we were at Brother Sebastian's and for the same price I received a Queen Cut Prime Rib 16 Ounce for close to the same price. We went here with my parents as they love to go sit at the bar, eat nachos, and drink. Its one of their fave spots. Looking over the menu earlier I was looking forward to eating here. Our waiter had to be new...I hope. He was not very attentive and was not engaged at all. He also asked my mom how she wanted her short ribs cooked..correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't think short ribs came anyway other than cooked? Any who, we started with the stokes nachos and they lived up to my parent recommendation. Very simple nothing special but delicious all the same. I ordered the rib eye and shallots special. Very disappointed. The mashed potatoes were extremely dry. As if they mashed them and forgot the following steps like some kind of liquid or butter or salt.... The brussel sprouts were my favorite thing on the plate. The steak, while cooked perfectly, was really lacking in seasoning. Couldn't distinguish the shallot mixture that was supposed to be on it. Next time I go here I would definitely order more consciously and get something more in line with the type of cuisine. My husband got Johnny's Big Plate and was very happy with his choice. Evertime I go to Stokes I find the food to be hot, spicy and very tasty. I have tried a number of their entrees and I never am dissatisfied. The appetizers also very good. They provide good portions and nothing tastes like it comes out of a can. It is more on the gourmet side but like the fact they use spices and make the meals look very appealing. I was surprised how quickly they get the food out and always ensure my Ice-tea is topped off while I am enjoying my meal. This is a good place to go. Great atmosphere and would love if one was closer to Bellevue but it is worth the trip. read more

Love having Stokes in West O. This gem is always a sure bet for a great drink (cucumber jalapeno margarita is awesome!) and truly unique, flavorful food (blackened salmon fish tacos are our go-to). Don't forget dessert (bananas fargo is excellent). It's a good vibe whether it's a date night, or night out with friends. We were there just last night, and I asked for a modification on one of their signature dishes (Sharon's enchiladas). Normally they come with chicken, but I was looking for a veggie dish. They went out of their way to make it, and it was spectacular. Portions are generous, too.
