Tiny boutique winery in the heart of downtown Hood River. The building has a very rich history. Unfortunately, we didn't get a tour (perhaps they don't do tours). The wine tasting was priced very reasonably. Their wines are very unique in how they're sourced and processed (pressed/fermented/etc) We were hosted by the founder's dad who was super nice and knowledgable. We stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon without a reservation and were seated right away. They offered both indoor and outdoor seating but it was a beautiful day. This was just one winery on our Girl's weekend but it was by far my favorite! Tina was fantastic - she was knowledgeable, attentive, and energetic. She had great stories that she shared about each of the wines which made the experience fun. We fell in love with one of their barberas and were fortunate enough to buy the last bottle! I was also a fan of the Gomez and their Pinot. We also bought a few bottles of the cider which reminded me of a dry Basque apple cider. The house was beautiful where the winery was located. There's paid street parking from Monday to Saturday (8-6) and Sundays are free. They don't offer food but there are so many good options in town that you don't even need it! I'm visiting friends in Portland and we decided to venture into Hood River for a day trip. Stoltz isn't on the main drag, just up a little hill. We noticed a sign on the Main Street and decided to check it out. The ambiance was just what we needed and Tina, the server/host/performing artist was awesome. The house was built *I think* in 1886 and though seemingly wildly speculative, Tina brought us into the world of the house with her stories for every tasting! She had great pairing suggestions and wonderful stage presence and energy. The tastings are teeny, but only $9 for I think 6 tastes, you can't beat that! I had a great time. We tried probably the driest red I've ever had, the Sagrantino! My mouth is still dry. We also tried honey mead, which was delicious and fragrant. My favorite was the Harriette, a lighter sort of juicy red. I recommend sitting outside if a table's available. A wonderful hidden gem! read more

This is my new favorite winery! I experienced wine tasting for the first time about 4 years ago with a group of friends I used to drink with. I was already a big wine drinker and wanted to experience what our local wines were like considering the fact that I've already experienced some of the Willamette Valley wines that I have been able to purchase in stores and have really enjoyed them. We had just arrived to Hood River this afternoon and had already done one tasting at Pheasant Valley earlier. We noticed a big sign for wine tasting at this big house up on the top of the hill. We decided to make the walk up and see what this was all about. Upon arriving to the house we were enamored with the style of the house and found out that this is the oldest house in Hood River and was once a Mortuary in the early to mid 1900's. Me, always being interested in the supernatural had to ask the host if there have been any sightings inside the house and he has said there have been several over the years in the upstair portion of the house and even told us there was a woman that was buried in the garage with a headstone and everything. Our host gave us the scoop about their products and explained to us that everything they do is handmade even down to the way the bottles are corked and even showed us the tool they use to do it. We went ahead with the tasting which is $5 that can be comped when purchasing a bottle. He started off with the whites and meticulously moved his pours over to the reds. By the end of our tasting we ended up purchasing two bottles of some great wine! The three wines I would definitely recommend by them are the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and my new favorite Pink which is a an equal part blend of Sangiovese, Malbec, and Pinot noir grown on the upper half of Underwood Mountain. I was absolutely impressed by the Pink especially for the fact that it was served chilled for us which would be a great for a nice summer day. When coming out to Hood River for wine tasting do make a point to come out to Stoltz Vineyards and sample their selection of great wine with a very impressive price! read more

We had just arrived to Hood River in the afternoon, after visiting Maryhill Winery. Upon arriving to the house we were enamored with the style of the house and found out that this is the oldest house in Hood River. The building was constructed in 1886 for Ezra and Georgiana Smith. They came across the Oregon Trail to Hood River by covered wagon from Illinois. Ezra found early success as one of our areas first successful orchardist. He also collaborated for the first bank in Hood River, was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives and oversaw the construction of a few historic buildings downtown Hood River. The building was subsequently acquired by CC Anderson in 1922 and with her enormous basement was used as the town morgue. Anderson Funeral Home installed a steam powered body lift, cadaver laboratory, and other parts for the operations. The cellar's natural low temperature served well in hosting Hood River's deceased. The Stoltz family bought the building in 1986 and now they use this historic structure for the production and serving of their wines. John Stoltz the owner, gave us the scoop about their products and explained to us that everything they do is handmade. $5 tasting that can be comped when purchasing a bottle. All wines are hand made using old world techniques. No stainless steel, plastics or pumps are involved in our creations. The results provide wines akin to the old European styles. This place was A-OK. The person serving tastings the day we arrived was very timid, quiet and serious. Not a bad thing per-say, but we were out enjoying the waterfalls and doing a little wine tasting, and it was a bum way to start our afternoon. They had a Chardonnay that was tasty, but the rest I could have lived without. Probably wouldn't stop here again, but glad we tried it. read more

I went here with my partner during our weekend trip to Hood River. Out of the 4 wineries we visited, this was the only one that gave a historical recap of the winery and how it was founded. I found the 5 minute spiel pretty interesting and appreciated the owner detailing the house's history. If you're a history buff and want to see the oldest house in Hood River (that's what the owner said) this might be a good stop. They also have a small room with antiques you can explore. Besides the interesting back story, this place fell a little short for me. Out of the 4 wineries we visited, this was also the one that had the lightest pours. The wine was good, but the owner was very stingy. My partner and I each ordered a flight and watched with a bit of amusement as the owner poured tiny amounts in each of our glasses. We literally got one sip per tasting. If you're hoping for a second sip to taste the wine more, you'll be out of luck. Because of the light pours, I probably wouldn't return here. There are other wineries in town that aren't so light handed. read more

Stopped in a year and a half ago and was floored by the wines on offer. Back again and what an experience it was! Great tasting, 5 wines, 1 white and 4 reds, and every one of them a winner. My faves were the Primitivo and the Sagrantino. Had done a number of wine tastings in the Willimette Valley and was surprised how similar all the wines were but not so at Stoltz Winery. We'll definitely be back and maybe even once more before we leave Oregon this year! read more

CHEERS to Stoltz Vineyards. I recently had the pleasure of drinking their latest release. I have found my new favorite wine. "Honey Chardonnay" is a buttery Chardonnay kissed with honey. He oddly spoke about how he wasn't a fan of the labeling his grandfather chose for one of their wines, which turned me off. Visited this charming and friendly tasting room today and got so much more than I expected! The server Jen was lovely and knowledgeable. The wines were interesting in that they are made a barrel at a time by hand in the old mortuary basement. Then in came the proprietor himself Mr. Stoltz! And he seemed to enjoy sharing his knowledge and wine making techniques. Love the Pinot noir. And purchased the Zweigelt! They gave us dark chocolate to go with the wine.
