Absolutely horrific service, sadly. Was looking forward to an intimate experience, and as soon as we walked in the door realized that wasnt the case. Should have left at that moment but figured we would still give it a chance. As we are sitting there waiting for him and the chatty man at the bar to stop talking, the owner (Im assuming) yells out, "what are you going to do, just sit there and ignore me".. well I figured you could stop talking for half a second, Acknowledge your only other 2 customers, walk over and get our order.. Instead, you chose to yell across this tiny room and show no care for anyone else besides yourself and the loud mouth man at the bar. Saw interest in your spirits at the liquor store and wanted to learn more about the process and where they came from.. but clearly the owner behind the bar could care less read more

I love rye whiskey. When I heard that Stonehouse made their own I had to visit. The owner/distiller treated me to a full sampling of his entire line. Rye Whiskey, Corn Whiskey, Wheat Whiskey, and Bon Fire Bourbon made in honor of AC/DC. Each one was delicious. As we drank each one he told us about the ingredients and the inspiration behind each. After the whiskey he broke out the Rums. I have never liked rum, but his are amazing thanks to the care he takes to use only the highest quality ingredients: premium sugar cane, heirloom chocolate fruits, organic coconut, and fresh vanilla beans. As we tried the rum he also let us snack on the cocoa nibs and coconut flakes which he utilized. By using real products the flavors are exceptional, nothing artificial here. Finally he broke out his latest release, the Scottish Laddie Celtic Whiskey. It's not made in Scotland so it ain't scotch, but it is made in the style of scotch using Montana products. The end result is a very fine spirit. This distillery is definitely worth a trip. High quality spirits, made with authentic ingredients. Each has a life and a story of its own. read more

Adventures in Recreational Dining. Part 1 We went out on Saturday to try the fare of the newly opened Stonehouse Distillery. It was well worth the drive. To the best of my knowledge, they make the only craft distilled rum in Montana. It is very good. The cocktails are great. The tasting room will only hold about eight, but is wonderful for about 6. The tasting room is currently only open on Saturday. We followed this with a wonderful dinner at the Big Bull Bar and Grill back across the highway in Winston. read more

I found this place on a whim and stopped by on a Monday and I am so glad I did! Like others have mentioned there's a Montana law that only allows 2oz of alcohol produced on-premise to be served per person per day. This means that you can really only order two cocktails per visit (unless you get a double) and that generally the cocktails are not going to be as strong as other places. If you don't want cocktails you can do flights or tastings of any of the spirits they distill in-house. Because of this law I wanted to try house cocktails or ones that I couldn't find anywhere else. My first drink was the burning through nap-thyme ($7) which was tart and sweet and very balanced. My second drink was the german in paradise ($8) which is a very interesting drink. The spiced rum and ginger go well together on the front and then it's sharp from the herb bitters on the finish. It's a unique flavor profile of spicy, herbal, sharp, and bitter. I want to give a shoutout to the bartender Jordan because he was working by himself on a Monday which meant he was the bartender, server, and cleaner. He was doing it all and moving non-stop while making great cocktails with care and quality. I waited a while for my cocktails but I understood the situation, and not once did he complain about it even though he could've. He was even crushing his own ice with the Lewis bag! Even for the lack of alcohol the craft cocktails are still great here.

My boyfriend and I heard about this place and thought we'd check it out. After driving around aimlessly for a while we finally found it. It's not going to be what you're expecting when you think you're going to a distillery though so be aware of that up front, it seems a little sketchy at first. This couple runs it out of a garage behind their trailer house and there are a bunch of farm animals out there and it stunk really bad. We tried the Whiskey and the rum, the whiskey was OK, the rum was awful, Montana is just not a good place to make rum I guess. I would recommend just getting some whiskey from a distributor maybe rather than taking the trip out to Winston if you specifically want a Montana made whiskey. read more
