Overall, I'm happy with the store for my weekly produce. It has all the basics that I need and the bakery is pretty good. Nice selection at the deli as well! :-) Biggest con: I wouldn't ever consider buying fish here. Every time I walk past that section it smells like someone died. I was very disappointed with their prices. They seem to average 20% more than all the other store prices in the same vicinity. I went to get a dollar item, listed everywhere, but at Stop & Shop it was listed for a $1.05. Really? Why couldn't the item be the same as the local area. I do like this stop and shop (though I prefer shoprite). I had one bad experience here in the year I've been going to this location. I had bought ground pork that wasn't even close to expiration but upon opening the package I KNEW it had gone bad. Yuck. Other than that, I don't have any complaints. I do my best to avoid this grocery store when possible. It is shabby, cluttered, and reeks with air of neglect. Shopping carts are parked outside gathering dirt and dust to make room for a huge display of sugary junk food right inside the entrance to the store. Management is unpleasant and a good example of the kind of personality that should not have made it to management level--an excellent exemplar of the Peter Principle at work. Why does this area not merit a Wegmans, a Fairways.... any options? The virtual monopoly that S&S enjoys is guaranteed to continue to provide sub-par grocery shopping. read more

After lower dixwell store closed the upper dixwell store has become a mess. The problems were brought up to the other store and now people hate going here. The north haven stop and shop is quieter and easy going, but unfortunately the stop and shop on dixwell just isn't worth going to anymore. The people ruined it read more

So you were looking for a spotless suburban grocery store in the New Haven area? Look no further.

Very helpful staff but management is a big problem. For example, the workers are exploited from all that I hear by so many of them being employed part time so the company doesn't have to give decent wages and benefits to a large percentage of its staff. In the Netherlands the same company could never pay such low wages and leave workers with so few benefits because it is against the law in the Netherlands. So the company exploits the American workers in ways the company is forbidden to do back in their home territory with Dutch workers. The store generally is filthy, in part because of so much traffic. Produce is not good quality compared to other stores. Shelves are sometimes in a mess, carts with last shoppers debris is left in them. Fom what I can tell, this store if one of the worst in the area, and for me a last choice of places to go to for grocery shopping. I resent the American worker is exploited by the Dutch. Whenever S & S opens a store they are the best they ever are: clean, efficient, few bagged produce so you buy what you want and no more than you need, but then gradually they put these loose fruits and vegetables in sealed packages, intimidating the buyer into buying more that he/she wants and wasting food and money. I refuse to buy more than I want but just tear open the sealed package and let them sort out how much I pay for as much as I really need or want. The customer should not be intimidated to buy more than he/she wants, especially since they package it in bulk in larger packages to sell you more than you need, siphoning more money out of your pocket. read more

This Stop & Shop is on par with the decent supermarkets I've used. It is better than many, though it could get better. The somewhat recent renovation helped--the store has a more modern look and has added a broader range of products, including a decent range of organic and a great (for this area) selection of international products. Overall, you won't go wrong at this Stop & Shop. read more

I guess most the people who Said " the price is right" are rich ! This place is really expensive and not affordable. To be fair, they have fresh fruit and vegs, but again really expensive. Also, there is always open lanes. The place is clean and well maintained and most importantly it is open 24 hrs. Again, I am on tight budget so this place is not my fav, and I prefer to go the Wal-Mart or price rite down the street to get my weekly groceries. read more

I'm fed up with this place. Today, as I was checking out, I saw that a Manager was bagging the groceries. So I said to myself, "Great, I won't have to mention to bag meat and veggies separately. Then I get out to my car and, as I'm putting the food in the trunk, I see that she bagged raw hamburger in the same bag with 2 heads of lettuce. Who does that? And she's a Manager! Great training, S&S. Then, recently I bought a birthday card for my Mom. Paid $5.00 for it. It somehow didn't make it into the cart... and yet I paid for it. Add to that the usually terrible vegetables and the bad meat department. Ugh. Hate this place. Even the one they closed down the street was better. Not by much. read more

I've been shopping at this store since it was built, and while prices were always a bit high, the store was very clean and well organized. That said, recently they've renovated the store, reset and reorganized, yet the place is looking pretty dumpy. The produce is now displayed, without any style or appeal, in cut case boxes (poorly cut, too). The signage is irregular and store is chock full of poorly placed vendor displays or full sized pallets with more unattractive merchandise. It truly rivals the local Walmart in dumpiness. Now if the prices were real competitive, maybe I would put up with the dingy new Stop and Shop, but prices are still high. And did I mention that the store is dirty, too? Funny, the ShopRite just across the street now looks like a sparkling shopping palace compared to Stop and Shop. Heck, even the cut rate Price Rite looks better. read more

Not only is the overall shopping experience *truly* awful (carts covered in rust, no effort aesthetically, and unhelpful employees) , but the prices are ridiculously high! Additionally, the bagger literally threw the bags into the cart. Yes, on my eggs - thank you very much. read more

They are very very dirty, I've gotten food that has been bad before. For example the milk went bad before the sell by date. Very few workers around to assist me. The workers that I did encounter were very rude and had very bad hygiene.. also this one lady I think was the manager Jennifer Paige was very very rude to me and I felt she harassed me when all I asked was for a price check on some chicken. I will never return to this store and I suggest go to the north haven one instead because this location should be shut down. read more

Even after an upgrade not that long ago putting emphasis on organic this location has been on the decline. Still has better produce by far than the closest competitor, ShopRite. Hamden had no upper end grocerers like except the quaint and excellent upper crust Whitneyville Market. read more

I usually go to the Wallingford Stop and Shop, but this week I had to run in errand in the area, so I decided to go to the Hamden location. I used to shop at this location several years ago, and when I went in the other day, it was like I was entering a completely different store. It was dirty, the shelves were poorly stocked, and the meat and veg selections were rough. I bought some chicken and ground turkey, and when I got home and opened the back of my car to unload, the smell of rotten meat almost knocked me over. After studying the meat packages, I noticed the chicken I'd bought was way past expiration. I didn't notice this in the store, because the price tag was conveniently covering the expiration date. I was advised to return it, but decided to just throw it out instead because of the smell. I've NEVER bought rotten meat at ANY other store before. This Stop and Shop has really gone downhill. read more

this store used to be a great place to shop...now? every single week, the prices are higher and higher! sure MOST of the food is fresh but this is NOT whole foods. they remodeled the store AGAIN and the only thing useful? 2 aisles dedicated to natural foods. their porters do not clean, there has been fecal matter on the wall of the very last stall for months...the staff is pretty nice but their purple shirt people, all of the females especially, are rude or act like they don't care "just give it to them for the price" when its really supposed to be free if it rings up higher than it's supposed to. and it is overcrowded. a lot of people blame the Putnam store but where are else are those customers supposed to get quality food? relax! the armed guard was taken out because "certain" people complained. I asked one of the guys at the service desk and he told me "he made the people who steal from here the most uncomfortable" and lemme tell you, it's NOT the Putnam customers who are stealing, according to someone who works there. so...if they just bring down the prices and have more lanes open, it will be a perfect place to shop again. OH IMPORTANT! IF YOU DONT READ ANYTHING, READ THIS! DO NOT GET THEIR DELI SANDWICHES! I bought a turkey sandwich....it had ham and ham was not on the label. last night, gave it another try and there was a sharp plastic object that I damn near choked on so I'm done with their prepped foods! read more
