The Fresh Market is a great little gem when you need quality groceries without the full big-store chaos. It definitely gives Whole Foods vibes just on a smaller, more intimate scale. I stopped in for some last-minute items for Super Bowl weekend, and it was perfect for that kind of run. The store is clean, well-organized, and everything looks fresh and well curated. You can tell they focus on quality. That said, it is on the pricier side, so I personally wouldn't make it my go-to for weekly grocery shopping. The Fresh Market is a gourmet grocery store that opened in Greensboro, North Carolina in March 1982. It was founded by husband and wife Ray and Beverly Berry. After returning from a trip to Europe, the Berrys were inspired to bring the charm and essence of an open, European-style grocery market to America. They wanted to offer consumers a shopping experience that was more intimate and personalized than the warehouse-type supermarkets that were popular in the late 1970s. Ray left his job overseeing 3,600 7-Eleven stores and the Berrys poured their life savings into their dream. They fell in love with the quaint community of Greensboro and the first Fresh Market opened there in 1982. Their grocery store featured the freshest produce, meats hand-trimmed by butchers in-store, fresh-cut flowers, and the finest foods and ingredients from around the world. Connecticut happens to have three Fresh Market locations in Westport, Avon, and Guilford. The latter location is the one that's closest to where I live. New everyday low prices Here's the thing. I've been to many Fresh Markets before. It's premium ingredients, premium service, and one is not surprised when they pay a premium price. First, the reveal: There are no new everyday low prices. And in addition, the quality of service is gone. There were 15 people waiting to pay for their overpriced groceries while 4 employees were fraternizing. I asked the deli counter for a sandwich, and after asking if he could make me a sandwich (something every other Fresh Market does), he left to serve another customer with no words. The staff of the Fresh Market are wonderful. And the people who work in Prepared Foods are very pleasant. I enjoy going there ONLY for muffins, creamy coleslaw, and the seafood salad. I dont understand why they find it necessary to overcook almost every item that they have to cook. SpareRibs They season only one side with dry rub or BBQ sauce. The inner side on the ribs contains a white thick membrane that is rubbery and SHOULD BE REMOVED before cooking. ITs like eating a rubber band when you actually bite in. Chicken Drumsticks Overcooked so that the meat itself is crunchy and dry. Throwing a lot of sauce on it - does not help with its dryness. See photo. Brussel Sprouts Often burnt. Why? Probably because the temperature of the oven is too hot OR they are cooking them too long. I actually heard the oil in the pan sizzle as it came out of the oven. Are we melting glass or cooking sprouts? Collard Greens The main stem of the leaves should be removed before cooking. When you try to eat the entire leaf - the main stem all chopped up makes the greens inedible. Whole chicken and Chicken Wings I gave up on the whole chickens years ago. The white meat is always dry - never moist. The prices are not any bargain. I dont mind paying when the food is good. Most of the time however, I end up discarding what I purchased. I'm a huge fan of The Fresh Market & was excited to visit this one after a medical appointment in the area. Compared with Stop & Shop & others, there is no comparison! Compared with other Fresh Market's though (Williamsburg VA for instance) this one was lacking. The sushi we bought was not great (& nobody in the deli acknowledged customers or offered assistance). The items advertised on sale that caused me to want to drive the extra 17 mins were sold out. The shelves were pretty bare. Granted, it was the day after Easter, but it was after noon-you would think the bakery items would have been re-stocked by then. I still managed to spend quite a bit & I love their trail mix bar, baked goods etc. I was surprised more of the produce wasn't local, as it is at Whole Foods. I had high expectations for Fresh Market and have been mostly disappointed. The prepared foods are often overcooked. Both the chicken wings and ribs were quite dry. I thought I would have good luck with the Madera steak kit, The Madeira sauce was quite flavorful and the gnocchi was good, but the steak was like rubber. It was like chewing gum. I don't understand all of the bad reviews, this place is amazing. Everyone claims how small the store is...no it isn't. Why does a store have to be massive to be appealing? Any Trader Joe's I've been to is far smaller than this store. It is called The Fresh MARKET, not The Fresh Supermarket. I consider this more of a specialty store, not a wholesale, do your weekly grocery shopping type of place. Yes, it can be pricey, but it all depends on what you buy. On one occasion when shopping with my mother, she spent well over $200 ...but she also got a lot of things. There are barrels of nuts, trail/dried fruit mixes, etc that you can scoop into a bag yourself and gauge the amount you'd like to spend. As for the prepared foods, they taste delicious. Smoky Mozz Pasta Salad and Mac & Bacon were great and roughly $6.50 for a pound each. The salmon looked great, but for $7.99 (i think) each piece, I'll pass. (Unlike the gentleman next to me who snobbishly pointed and picked out exactly which three pieces of it he wanted). (Spending $24 on 3 pieces of salmon alone, not to mention the other items he was buying) Maybe you 1 star reviewers are like the snobby salmon man? We also dealt with the butcher when inquiring about the size of their burgers and how much 4 would cost. He was friendly and even joked with us! There were a few samples to try and one that stood out was the sushi. We sampled a Spicy Crunchy Crab Roll (A Chef Special) and it was so fresh and flavorful. My husband, who mind you does not eat fish at all.....AT ALL..was game to try it when I told him how good it was and he thought it was amazing. What?! We asked the sushi chef to make us a fresh roll (because he was currently sold out of the ones prepared ahead of us getting to the counter), he was super friendly as well. I've come to The Fresh Market maybe 9 to a dozen times now and each time I go, I discover new and exciting flavors. oh, but do splurge and don't miss the no bake edible cookie dough in the refrigerated back left of the store. For the Guilford locals the best way I can describe this gorgeous store is if, Whole Foods & Bishop's Orchard had a baby, they would produce The Fresh Market. We travel to this Fresh Market a few times a year. The meat is very good and the selections of GF and DF specialties items is a huge plus for me though during this trip, I did notice their were almost no GF baked goods for sale among the bakery items and the pastry case holds only macarons. Although the prices can be a bit high, they do have sales. The porterhouse and ground beef were a great buy and the butcher hand cuts or grinds if you ask. That is well worth the price! read more

I don't know why every town doesn't have one of these. This place is always stocked full of fresh and healthy food and is honestly one of the only places I look forward to grocery shopping. I am not a complete health freak and still need to shop for other places to get some of the more sugary and fattening treats, but this place is always my first stop when looking for fresh meat or vegetables. I frequently go to this store for misc groceries or lunch. Everyone in the store is wonderful, friendly and helpful except for the deli staff who are totally rude and dismissive or just downright nasty. I went in to the store today and decided to get something from the deli. There were 4 staff members behind the counter doing various tasks - none of which involved serving other customers - and I waited for 5 minutes and 36 seconds (yes, I timed it!) before walking off. Yes, I said excuse me a few times. Yes, I waved to try and get someone's attention. One woman who I have seen behind the counter frequently, a middle aged shorter woman with brown hair looked right at me and walked away. This is not the first time that I have waited at length to be served. Maybe they need to implement a number system or a buzzer or something so that they are aware someone is waiting for assistance. read more

I want to give up eating when I walk into a Stop & Shop! How is it possible to have the same 10 vegetable available year round?? Um, because nothing is grown locally, that's how. And god forbid they stock an okra or a fiddle head once in a while... Anyway, I can say nothing bad about the FM - it is a real treat and pleasure to shop there. Fiiiirst! So I'm the first one to review this grocery store. In the past I've visited the Wesport store and now that they're in Guilford I've given them several opportunities to impress me here. This store is sort of like a miniature Whole Foods with similar prices but with 1/4 of the selection. Yes it's an uppity grocery store for an uppity crowd. Don't get me wrong, it's nice and all, but I'm usually hard pressed to find something I actually want to buy. It's very clean and very organized. I don't understand the dim lighting or the wooden pergolas covering the cash registers. It's unnecessary fluff if you ask me. Some of their prepared foods are interesting but the selection is kinda limited. In the whole grocery store hierarchy of life I just don't understand where a store like this fits in. It's not possible to do all your grocery store shopping here. There is still a need to make a visit to a big grocery store like Big Y. Plus I doubt The Fresh Market competes one-on-one with Whole Foods because it doesn't it doesn't have nearly the "whole" selection that Whole Foods has. Lastly, the prices. There are a few items on sale, but a lot of stuff is noticeably pricier than ordinary grocery store prices. I don't see commensurate quality in matching those prices. I think this store's strengths might be its meat dept and baked goods dept. I think people might be willing to pay higher prices for nice quality foods in those two categories. Twice I purchased something called a raspberry chocolate parfait and I hate to say it it's actually worth $3.99. Sure I'd get it a third time. Other things I purchased like a full chicken, panini sandwich, and Italian sausages have all been nice too. I found the trick is to get sale items. Even though this store might not exactly be for me I believe it will survive. Heck the Fresh Market is a fast growing chain so somebody must be shopping with them. tonight my husband went to the fresh market in guilfird ct. he purchased the rotisserie chicken meal that came with two sides and their corn bread. thinking the fresh market sells a good number of organic and healthy items as well as it also claims theyre committed to creating the very best food for guests and proudly support every product it bears its name with i was highly shocked to read the rotisserie chicken ingredients: chicken breast meat, water, contains 2% or less salt, dextrose, sodium phosphate, sodium acetate, sodium diacetate, browned in oil. then i read the cornbread ingredients: sugar, bleached wheat flour, eggs, soybean oil, water cornmean modified food starch baking soda sodium aluminum phosphate monoccium phosphate mono and diglycerides sodium stearoyl lactylate propylene glycol monoesters buttermilk solids salt natural and artificial flavors lactic acid. this is just two items for example. this is what youre standing by?? knowing what we know now about nutrition and preservatives and processed foods etc? you're feeding other people's children. It's SO refreshing to purchase from a supermarket that treats its customers with value and respect. I'm will Stop myself from saying where I normally Shop but they treat their customers as indentured servants. We pay them for the privilege of working for them. Fresh Market has its drawbacks (brand consistency, fish department) but I will happily support them in exchange for being treated with dignity, respect and basic human decency. I love this place. When I buy fruits and vegetables they don't spoil magically overnight. The meat is tasteful not just chewy. Their bakery is outstanding. Salads, sandwiches are fresh and delicious. Milk prices the lowest and freshest. I bought two orchids that haven't stopped blooming yet!!!! At Christmas they had outstanding special items. Big Y and Stop and Shop better watch out. Check the dates on the products before you buy! I bought some smoked salmon and once I got home I saw that the date was long passed (bought on 12/24 with best by date of 12/5) and it looked like they had frozen it and left it to thaw in a fridge. Since I had no idea when it had been frozen and how long it had been out of the freezer I couldn't take a chance and eat it. Obviously they hadn't sold it by the Best By date and figured they would freeze it and take it out again during the holidays. The issue is that they didn't give any indication to customers that they did this which shows poor food hygiene practices and could endanger people. It's a shame because I like the store otherwise but this is a major no-no for any store and I won't be back. read more

I use to purchase items at the prepared food area.....but recently I stopped. Almost all of the prepared food on display is not made by the local staff. Instead the majority of the food is received pre-made in large containers. The staff merely dishes out the food into the display case. Not a bad thing,... just the reality of the situation. Some items are better than others - but most are fair at best. In general I find the items they do cook to be extremely dry. The different variety chickens are mostly over cooked, ...and so are the spare ribs. Concerning the over cooked ribs, they give you a choice of a very salty dry rub or an abundance of overly sugary barbecue sauce. The chicken wings are priced so as to cost about a dollar each. The prepared food area is Not exactly the best bargain in town. But I guess you pay for convenience.....and even I on occasion forget myself and go back for more. Will I ever learn? Meh. read more

Here's the thing: this place IS a glorified candy store. The baked goods that I've had are great as are all of the (many) chocolate options. I'm not sure of the reason for the entire section dedicated to jelly beans and M&Ms segregated by color, but whatever. The fruit & veg are reasonably priced (for now), and for the most part and the only reason I've been back every week is because they sell grapes that may very well be soaked in crack because I can not get enough. I've not dealt with anyone behind the counter because I'm not buying meat or anything premade. The people shopping there are on a level of self entitled grossness that surprised me, considering Guilford is still in New Haven county. Snotty families wandering around, blocking the aisles, allowing their child (and this is true, hand to god--I saw this happen last week) to open mouth croup cough all over unprotected food. So, will I go back? Yes, because I love candy and I have no self control, but if you want meat, go to T&Js in East Haven. If you want fancy ass local cheese, go to Bishops. For everything else, Big Y (or Stop and Shop, if that's your druther). read more

Fresh Market is definitely a higher class grocery store (i.e. more pricey w more gourmet food options) than other large grocery stores in area.... but despite their name, we (as a family) have unfortunately purchased fruits and vegetables that SEEMED they were in good condition while in the store, but once home and ready to eat, the inside of some of these items were NOT in the shape we believed them to be. The worst example of this was the almost 2 pounds of pears that we bought....only to discover once home, that the flesh of all the pears were a discolored light brown- and in some spots almost mottled (almost like they'd been kept too cold in storage? )... very disappointing. But besides the inconsistent quality of freshness in their produce section, Fresh Market DOES offer a amazing and extensive choices for various "snackie" bulk products: trail mixes galore, yogurt covered items, Fair- trade chocolate covered items, granola, stored fruits of all flavors, ect.... it's pretty impressive (and delicious! ) Another perk that Fresh Market offers that I've personally found difficult to locate locally, is the impressive, and top quality spice mixes/ rubs/marinades. They really do a going job. Overall, would have rated it a 4 star.... but the fresh produce bring inconsistent was a deal breaker for me, and it was disappointing. read more

What a let down this place is. All the hype of this new development and this new chain that was coming. I was hoping it'd be a good alternative to driving all the way to Milford for whole foods. Very small store..and poorly set up. No room to pass another person, and it seemed like the prepared foods and deli took up 2/3 of the store. Definitely not a one stop shop, missing a lot of items that the normal big y or even whole foods has. Rude employees, at least at the butcher, yet it shouldn't even be considered a butcher. Both people dressed as butchers had no clue about meats, they looked at me sideways when I asked for sliced chuck steak. They brought the real 'butcher' out to help, which consisted of him telling me to buy my own meat slicer cause he cannot do it. Very pricy!! $9 for a bottle of tomato sauce, $4 for a lb of pasta...$5 for croutons that were soggy and disgusting, right into the garbage. I'll never be back, no way. read more

Slight step up from Stop & Shop, and maybe not even that. This place is loaded with junk food. An entire aisle for Potato chips?...Candy, cookies, sweets, and junk food everywhere. I noticed that the prices were very low on produce and the Meat dept....don't be fooled people, it's just to get you coming back. Those prices will slowly creep up within the next few weeks. Build it and they will come...flashy colors, high ceilings, perfectly placed product, and the Zombies come in droves. I feel bad for the Mom n Pop stores in the area that will be affected by this Zombie hypnotizing strip mall....it's official, the Cancer is slowly creeping into the Eastern end of New haven county I found almost zero Gluten free products....whaaaat??? also, almost zero Organic Chicken, and the same w/ Grass fed beef.
