Of all the swap meets and baby sales we went to (literally dozens and dozens) there were only 2 we recommend to others and 2 that we are repeating now that I'm pregnant with baby #2! Little Monsters Swap Meet is by far the BEST used baby/kids stuff sale ever! it's held on 5-6 Saturdays a year (mostly in the summer) at the Spruce Grove Tri Leisure Center... so it's about 10-15 minutes West of Edmonton if taking the Yellowhead. We've only been to one this year... the first one on April 9th because I was put on bed rest at the end of April. I can't wait to go to the last two in August and September! If you are looking for the big ticket items like strollers, car seats, cribs, etc... it's worth paying the early bird $5 admission fee. If you're only looking for clothing and books you can wait until the last two hours. Usually I pick up clothes for my daughter and books at $1-$2 a piece and of course people also have higher end clothing like Gymboree for a little more. But books and clothes and toys at a great price galore! It's like 100 garage sales in one building! People there are used to bargaining... so pick up a few items from the same table and make an offer! There is usually a line up half an hour early of 200-300 people... It is that popular! Really, once you go you will come back and back and back! It's also at the Tri Leisure Center... so if you have older ones, you can let them go swimming or ice skating while you shop! I just can't say enough good things about the Little Monster's Swap Meets... after being to some really terrible ones where I didn't buy a thing... I've also shopped online when I was desperate, but between the exchange rate, extreme shipping costs, and the custom fees... you end up paying twice as much. The quality of Torrid's clothing though makes it almost worth it. So when we heard this store would be opening in December, I lost my mind! I chose to attend the grand opening of this location (The first in Edmonton) on December 10th. I was happy with the selection, though the Torrid website still holds much more than what you'll find in store. I expected the prices to be a little higher (thanks to the crappy exchange rate), but was still surprised with how high some of it was. I would put the prices on par with Addition Elle, which is a shame. But be sure to sign up for their emails and you'll get lots of deals and coupons sent to you!! The staff were absolutely fantastic while dealing with a group of excited shoppes. Honestly, they never looked stressed or overwelmed. I don't know what kind of training they go through to be able to handle that so well, but I think everyone should be made to train with them for a day before ever dealing with customers!

I like seeing things show up that would only otherwise be available in a niche setting like a dress shop attached to a resort, or some of the better-known beauties like Smoking Lily. Way back in the old days there was a second-hand shop called Zoryana just off Whyte and I still have clothes from there that I treasure -- the eye in the curation here reminds me of that Zoryana flair, with upper crust overtones. I don't expect rock-bottom prices for one of a kind quality items, though if you wait, a thing that does not sell will be given a sale price more in keeping with what reviewers here seem to be expecting from consignment. Usually the really cool stuff sells before that can happen, though. A NWT blush coloured embossed leather jacket at thirty bucks is one of the faves I picked up there -- tag said $129 -- seemed pretty great to me! One of the biggest draws of Red Pony is the people who own and operate the shop. Yannick, Janel, and Cherry light up Instagram showing off items from local clothing and jewelry designers and makers, and putting together outfits from items in the shop. These are women who are happy and successful in an Edmonton small business venture, and that in itself is inspiring. Going to one of their pop-ups guarantees you will have fun while finding something to occupy the front hanger slot of your closet circuit. For me, consignment shops are a lot about atmosphere. Some gather too much inventory, and become somewhat oppressive and dark with it. Red Pony always seems just right, with enough but not too much, and a real art at displaying things so you can't just walk past them without looking more closely. I've never had an encounter with Red Pony that didn't make me happier, even if just looking at their online shop. Definitely worth trying to see if it has the same effect on you!

I brought in 28 items which were in pristine/brand new condition, clean, beautifully steamed and in garment bags. The majority of items had not been worn more than once. Five of the items did not sell, however, I was shocked at how little the cheque I received was. I asked to see her list of consigned items by me which indicates both her asking as well as sold prices. Again, very suprised. Aritzia items were priced about the same or higher than higher end brands such as Love Shack Fancy, Tularosa, L'Academie LA, Parker, etc - several items that retailed for between $250-$650 each were priced for $28. Mavis' excuse was that she didn't know the brands. A real shocker as anyone who purports to be a higher end consignor should be up to date and familiar with the logistics of sourcing information on price checking. A quick search by me turned up most items in a matter of minutes. At the very least, Mavis could simply have asked me and then verified the prices since I stood beside her as she unpacked and checked the labels and condition of the clothing. Another thought would be to occasionally check the websites of local higher end boutiques to stay current on their brands and pricing since these items, I imagine, she would hope to eventually receive in her shop. The final disappointment was having four of the five unsold items (one was missing altogether) returned to me literally rolled up in a ball and thrown into a bag. I expected to received these back in the same condition as I brought them in. Needless to say, I will not be using Good Stuff Consignment in the future.

Dots is a pretty decent liquidation store…read more There are two locations in Edmonton; the other one is a much larger location located just north of Oliver Square against the cemetery. All Dots are like a thrift store version of Winners so you need to have time to hunt for the Easter Eggs or hidden treasures. Currently they have some pretty wicked novelty clearance items from Urban Outfitters as well as jewellery/accessories from Urban Outfitters. They have clothing brands from all over the world and they get progressively marked down; sign up for their emails for advance notice of sales and e-mail exclusive coupons. This is a great place for discounted books (I seriously found Choose Your Own Adventures in reprint at the other location for $3!!!!). They consistently have Dex clothing liquidations and other random brands including boutique brands. Today they had Eddie Bauer feather filled mittens! Definitely try your clothing on here though they do have a short 2 week exchange policy. They carry swimsuit 2 piece items throughout the year and usually around the $4-$8 price point. They carry the most random assortments but from time to time you'll find vinyl records, holiday greeting cards with the F-bomb in them, and funky magnets/office supplies. I've found sassy note pads here, great books for presents, hats galore (and usually about $5), runners for my kids (prices vary but cheap, cheap), and dresses for my daughter for under $5. Basically, you need to come here to figure out if this store is for you but plan on having some time to wander around and not be in a rush.

Even lesser-known brand name! What is that, I've never even heard of that brand name! Jeans are $10! Shirts are $2! You can't miss this!" So, you can see why I was always a little bit skeptical. Why would I want jeans for $10? Those have to be knock-offs, or just terrible quality. Plus it never sounded like they carried a ton of brands I was super into. But I was having a girly day the other day (I know, that seems to be a theme in a lot of my reviews) and on my way back into the city from South Common I spotted Dots. Why not? I had half an hour to kill. Here's the thing about Dots. I can totally understand why someone would absolutely hate shopping here. It's like shopping at Winners, only more frustrating. The clothes are jam packed onto rack upon rack. And there are just so many racks. The items are helpfully organized by brand (and sometimes size as well), but that doesn't negate how completely overwhelming it is to walk in here. I would say that 95% of the clothes in Dots are things I would never wear. They're either off-trend, aimed at an older demographic, poor quality, or just plain ugly. But if you take your time, this place can be magic. I found the most beautiful dress I think I've ever seen. Regular $130 (and supposedly, would be more at other stores) marked down to $30. Bought it! Now, the zipper was broken, which cost me another $40 at the tailor's (I know, total rip-off, but that's a whole 'nother review), but that's still almost a 50% discount. Not too shabby. I also found two other very cute, age-appropriate modern working girl kind of tops. They were both really inexpensive and really pretty! I don't think I'll have the patience to shop here often, but it was definitely worth it to come by, and when the mood strikes me (and the sales are on), I'll be back.

I know from experience that Gymboree clothes go quick at 2nd hand stores and are first dibs on hand-me-downs. The Kingsway mall Gymboree has recently relocated and has a fresh new decor. As such they have more store area and it's easier to navigate a stroller around the store. The store still has their discount bins and sales rack which is a good place to look as you can sometimes get great deals. But sometimes those great deals aren't such a great deal on the credit card!
