In the emergency room, instead of following Stormont Vail's stated values, a physician told our family that we could "take our loved one elsewhere" if we didn't like something, rather than taking the time to answer questions, address concerns, or actively listen. That response alone speaks volumes. This facility has taken a noticeable dive and is not the Stormont it once was. When families are scared and advocating for their loved ones, dismissiveness is unacceptable. If you're given the same advice, take it. We recommend taking your loved ones to University of Kansas - St. Francis Campus, where care and communication would be markedly better. I could go on and on about this experience. OK, this is unusual to get a review of a Hospital Grill. I was equally surprised when myself and 2 friends went to this one while my friends mom was in care at the hospital. He ordered a reuben which he called outstanding. I ordered a cheese burger Medium and it was a real surprise. The only thing that kept me from ordering another was this one was filling on its own. The Grill staff where friendly, kept the place spotless and ok, don't laugh, I want to go back there for a lunch. What a surprise!!! read more

I want to start with the positive, I must say the nurses give great care. My issue was that the hospital discharges way too early. I had no idea where I was and do not remember being discharged at all. The only thing I do remember about discharge was that no one came to talk to you. All of this was taken care of like a zoom meeting on the tv. This means no one really went through the papers with you and gave you the opportunity to ask questions. read more

First of all I would like to say I'm a former employee of SVH with 34 years service. The last 10 years of my employment was not the greatest. Recently my daughter was at SVW the staff especially the security guard at the front desk was very unprofessional and uncarring. This facility does not need these kind people working there. But it seems the norm for SVH. I had questions on the die used for a mri I was taking that the tech couldn't answer and got nasty with me!! Also had a ablation for afib after that they didn't tell my wife where I was. For several hours. Come to find out the IS department said that they were unable to link that procedure with the surgical procedures for updates for the families that are waiting. Also before the procedure the staff was very rude and unprofessional. But like I said that's the norm. It's really frustrating after all the years I worked there. Oh and by the way the Patient Experience department is worthless!! Tried to register a complaint on line but was unable to there again the IS department. So I called to register the complaint again they were unable to answer any of my questions. SVH is broke not only money but administration. Under staffed and over worked employee's. But rest assured the ceo makes over 1 million dollars a year that's more than the president of the free world. The community deserves better. You can't continue to offer services like this and stay in business. But with SVH it doesn't seem to matter. They blew the government money for covid on other things that had nothing to do with covid. All the building and remodeling the money had to come from somewhere. With that being said just please make sure if you find yourself having to use SVH be aware , ask questions and do your homework before because your on your own there's no body there to help. I am so sorry to see the rapid decline of this hospital and the care that it provides. A family member recently spent five days there and I continuously had to correct what they were doing. For example, they kept trying to use an IV when he had a port that should be accessed. Lots and lots of tests, but results were never told to the patient of family. There was very very little communication between doctors nurses and the patient. The place was understaffed, and more attention was paid to security than to patient care. The food was almost edible. It was just all around a very poor experience. Our family will not go back there again.to read more

I will say from my experiences coming here, the staff is very nice. However, I am not a fan of the nurse practitioner I have seen a few times over the years. All they want to do is prescribe meds rather than actually run tests and find answers. They love putting a band aid on the problem. I felt like she just was not listening to me. this hospital is the worst I have ever been to. I was sent by ambulance to the emergency department. I was given two CT scans for my heart plus multiple test. I didn't have insurance at the time. When I talked to billing they were cha me over 28,000 dollars. I got the bill lowered and paid off what I owed. Come to my surprise without communication from Stormont Vail I was also being charged over 8,000 dollar for the doctor bill. They failed to communicate that with me and took me to collections. Now I'm making monthly payments and got it out of collections. Next is radiology. I owed over 1000 to radiology. I was making monthly payments. Radiology wasn't happy with the amount I was paying and without my knowledge sent me to collections. I was halfway paid off. On the website they give an option of what amount to pay. so monthly I was paying 50 to 100 dollars. This hospital doesn't care about your health or anything. It's all about overly charging you for testing and making a profit from you. This hospital and the CEO only care about making money off of you and with no hesitation will take you to collections to make a profit off of you. I have never dealt with this before and it's disgusting. I would rather die than ever go there again. read more

If you are a patient trying to have a medical claim reviewed and paid, and give your insurance company authorization to obtain your medical records so that they can pay your claim - the facility staff is terrible at responsiveness. We have patients and workers who have tried reaching the medical records department by phone, email, etc. to obtain the records with the patient's authorization... ZERO response to anyone in 3 months now. Seriously? In any other normal professional environment whomever was responsible would be gone - today. And people wonder why their healthcare system is failing them or they can't keep up with bills. Facilities like this only serve to make matters worse. Upon my initial arrival in Topeka three years ago, I was told that I should not seek medical service at Stormont Vale Hospital. I was adamantly encouraged to stay far away from their ER. I was told, "You will go in alive, and come out dead!" Well, needless to say, I heeded their knowledgeable and local advice, opting to enroll in the St. Francis Health Systems, instead. Fast forwarding to present day 2024... last night I took my fiance to the ER at Stormont Vale. He is a member of Stormont Vale Healthcare Systems, so I had no choice but to accompany him. To my pleasure and delight, the ER welcoming staff set my fears to rest. The triage and intake nurses were warm and welcoming - supportive of his every need. The doctor and care nurses were friendly and accommodating. The care he received was 5-Star care beyond compare, (and,I'm not easily pleased). Clearly, Stormont Vale has/and is turning over a new leaf. I can now say, from my own personal experience,"You go into Stormont Vale ER alive; and, come out refreshed 'n re-vitalized". All previous rumors and rumbles about Stormont Vale quality of service can be put to rest. Obviously, there's a "New Sherriff in town", and the current Stormont Vale team is making it clear. I am not sure how to put this into words representative of the lasting emotional trauma they caused me, my girlfriend, and anyone else who received the same treatment; but I will do my best in articulating a proper review for this soulless place. Stormont Vail is yet another culprit in the ongoing "cesarean section epidemic" attempting to push them on anyone they can, regardless of a clean bill of health each time they run tests. If your tests do not meet the average with pinpoint accuracy, they will shame you into receiving a c-section. I am sad to say that shaming is the perfect descriptor for what they do to someone who questions why they are demanding you get a c-section. If the shaming does not work, well then they turn to directly strong arming you. They will berate you, and put you in such an uncomfortable position that you will suffer emotional distress. Some of the doctors will even overstep their bounds and directly threaten you if you bring facts contrary to their beliefs. Do not let them fool you. If every one of your health tests are borderline average, do not let them deceive you. My son was scheduled to be born a week after the c-section they coerced my girlfriend to get. He was born unable to take in the appropriate amount of oxygen, and for exactly a week I watched him suffer. I say my son suffered for a week, and the key point here is that was when his natural birth was meant to be, a week after the scheduled c-section. Pure coincidence he left the NICU on his scheduled natural birth date? I'll leave that to the scientists who know better than shyster doctors. I can only present the data I have at hand. Prospective families, do not under any circumstance let them sway you. Unless they say specifically that your case is imminently life threatening (they may do that anyways, hence why I say overstepping their bounds), do not give in to the duress. In closing: The nursing staff is overworked and undervalued. Their ability to be cordial is limited by this. Nonetheless most of them were absolutely terrible at their jobs, and had atrocious bedside manner; often they would forget about you and become irate at even the slightest reminder. Communication between the multiple wards is also nearly nonexistent, leaving you to run middleman for them. read more

I really don't like to use the word "hate" but when it comes to this center of quackery I HATE EVERY "PERSON" that works there. The ER nurse was FAR LESS than qualified to tap a vein than the girl who took my blood at intake. When the nurse missed my vein a fourth time I was done & though I could barely walk she threw my shoes at me along with my clothes. She also left a needle (outside of the vein, the one she was literally digging around with) stuck in my arm as well as all the sticky patches connected. I have MANY, MANY family members in the medical field. My grandad was a doctor and my mother was a nurse and psyche nurse for over thirty years. (Was even employed at Stormont FAIL at one time). My Grandmother went in complaining of abdominal pain they tried to send her home saying it was just gas. Turned out she had a perforated something (I don't know what it was called but I DO know if my mother hadn't been knowledge and insisted on more testing, my GM would have likely died). After all that, the still fleeced me out of 2+thousand dollars. People, if you are sick and in need of medical attention, go ONLY TO SAINT FRANCIS, now affiliated with KU Medical. It's only a couple of blocks away & the medical staff there are TRUE professionals & nothing like the losers at Stormont FAIL. I'd rather die than ever set foot on Stormont Fails property again. You'd probably get better care in a prison infirmary. read more

I wouldn't send my dog to Stormont Vail. They haul you into their conference room and try to intimidate you into sending your parent to hospice. They hover like buzzards approaching you immediately after each test result in an attempt to send people to hospice. If their shaming does not work, they try to divide family members. The doctors and palliative care team put you in an uncomfortable position causing more stress when you are already stressed as a parent is there. One doctor even overstepped his bounds threatening to bring us before an ethnics committee if we didn't send our parent to hospice. The ethnics committee review should be brought against these staff for their pushing u to let your parent die by not giving food or water. read more

I'm finding it difficult to review this. Three stars just because of staff. Oh my goodness. They are truly truly top of the line! I have had plenty of nurses in my life. I don't say this lightly. As far as the doctors, and this includes today's (Erika Robb). Have any of you physicians had migraines the last 15 years of your life? Have you tried to keep a job throwing up and with pain so bad you have to go on disability? Have you felt the worthlessness of that? My seizures are not a fluke. However, it seems that I've gotten labeled a drug risk. Erika, I do not have narcotics at home. When my migraines started in the beginning and I went to the ER I was treated with narcotics and given an rx. When my migraines got severe enough, the ER did the same. When I was made aware of the rebound affect, I weaned myself down slowly. I have been telling them if I have to go in, no narcotics. But with this new (small dry brain bleed) I needed something. So, I'm sure when you dig in my chart you'll find something about "drug seeker" I would now be interested to hear Dr. Boudrueaux's thoughts on my seizures. read more

Sent the Nurse in to discharge me and when I explained that I had gotten worse, Dr. Pruitt came in and made me feel horrible. He mocked me and rudely offered me a couple of tylenol. Its been 11 years since I have decided to make Topeka my home. In those years I have had more than a few visits to the Stormont Vail Hospital and I have always found the staff and doctors and nurses to be very professional, warm and kind and always got a feeling that they really care about my health, comfort and welfare. That is until a recent visit to the hospital. First of all, I find the whole covid screening process annoying and absurd. They have closed the North Tower entrance and now everyone visiting the hospital is bottlenecked at the main entrance. If someone did happen to enter the hospital with the disease he is coming in close contact with every one else entering the hospital where if both entrances were screening the number of people the infected person came in contact would automatically be halved. On this last visit I entered the hospital and walked toward the person doing the screening and she glanced at me and then continued her conversation with her coworker instead of addressing me which annoyed me and I said something to her, it seemed from that point on that she had made up her mind to be as difficult as possible. The problem came when she asked me which type of procedure I was there for which I did not feel comfortable answering and told her that it is between my Dr and I what procedure I am there for, not her and not anyone standing in the lobby who might overhear. I told her that I was there for an outpatient procedure with Dr Nassari and anything more than that was none of her business. Its not only the fact that HIPPA laws require the hospital to protect patients personal medical information but also the fact that what procedure I am having is not pertinent to covid screening. Its a waste of time and its more time spent in a congested public area. She said that it is policy and it seemed that she not going to go any farther so I walked away and up the ramp to where a security guard and another screener were standing. This is when a small woman with a mans haircut, I believe a volunteer or some sort of supervisor of the screeners ran behind me yelling 'sir' 'sir' I don't know who she was but I was on my way to speak to the security guard or or another screener or someone else and I ignored her which I suppose offended her ego, I dont believe for one second it was about covid because if that is what she was concerned about she would have observed the six foot rule and kept her distance from me. If anyone in the hospital is exposed to coved it is the people at the entrance who come in close contact with every single person entering the building. She ran all the way up the ramp behind me and then tried to get in front of me when I swerved and tried to avoid contact with her she ran her body into mine at the security station. I informed her that what she did is considered battery in the state of KS. It is very plain to see that she intended to get physical with me and the video footage will confirm this. And then the thing most galling about the whole experience is that she lied and said that it was I that ran into her. I find this kind of behavior very unprofessional to say the least, it is petty and despicable and I feel like someone should find a time machine and send her back to Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union , she would make a very good SS guard. People like this do not deserve to be dealing with the public, she is a blot on the hospital and she a dangerous person. A false accusation like this could ruin someone's life. We have all seen it happen. Fortunately the Security guard and another woman with a cooler head, came forward having seen the whole thing tried to de-escalate what she tired to escalate. The second woman, whom I would like to thank, asked me to calm down and address her only, that I was absolutely right, that I had a right to privacy concerning my medical information and got me a badge from the screener so that I cold get on with my business. I got on with my day, had my procedure done and went home. I regret that did get the pushy little woman's name because I would have made a police report which I still will do when I find out who she is. I have contacted my insurance company and filed a grievance with them and with the patient advocate at the hospital. From now on I will feel a little less safe when I come to Stormont Vail, I hope the woman is fired or dismissed or at the very least not allowed to deal with the public anymore. Like I said she makes the rest of the amazing, trained, professional ,and courteous staff, look bad. read more

I came in with double vision, not being able to see well, and not being able to walk. The medical team I had here was nothing short of amazing. Dr. Addisse was so at tentative and had incredible bedside manners. Yvonne one of my main nurses was one of the most caring nurses I've ever had. My neuro doctor, Dr. Grobman was thorough with all of my scans. He found the problem and wasted no time in treating me. He genuinely made me feel like myself again. All of the student nurses were very professional, my patient techs, IV techs, CT techs, lab people, housekeeping, transport and anyone i came in contact with were so amazing. I'm not one to write reviews but i was so blows away with the amazing level of care i received here I had to leave one. This hospital is one of the best I've ever been to and i've been in over 30. Thank you for taking such great care of me and helping me get back on my feet. I truly appreciate every single person who helped me. read more

Spring of 2016, my parents were in a horrible car accident (a drunk driver hit them). They were life-lifted to Stormont Vail. When I got to the trauma ward, my mother had already passed but my dad was still hanging on by a thread. The doctors were so wonderful and helpful. The doctor who was with my mother when she died was so caring and told my brother and I what happened and answered all our questions. The nurses were fantastic. My brother and I practically lived at the hospital while our dad was there. They took such good care of all of us. Then, when dad went septic, the Stormont Vail palliative care team came to talk to my brother and I. It was a horrible horrible time, but this hospital and their doctors and nurses and teams made a huge difference and helped make everything and everyone more comfortable. They cared. The people who work here really care.. and that makes all the difference. read more

Avoid DR. Kingfisher in ER if at all possible! I took my wife to ER. Explained symptoms to front desk registrant. Registrant calls back and says patient coming in, "sounds like vertigo to me." After blood drawn and MRI and 4 hours Kingfisher finally comes in and says she has vertigo, here's a prescription that might help. Back in ER two days later with worse, stroke like symptoms. This time after several more tests, competent doctors, and a three day stay she was correctly diagnosed. Obviously Kingfisher isn't able to think/diagnose himself. read more

Life damaging Hospital! There are some good Drs & nurses here but the bad, heartless, arrogant staff, truly outways the good ones. Darla, in billing was extremely rude and has the wrong attitude! My brother went in for a brain bleed, was lifeflighted 2 times due to the arrogant Neuro removing a perfectly good functional Brain Shunt which I had discussed with him & another Dr to NOT remove if there was no damage or issues, well, he did, and at 1st left the Shunt out completely within hrs my brother declined/unresponsive was told he was doing good and a temporary Shunt had been placed. I came in the next morning & NO HE WAS NOT FINE, he was placed in a coma, heavily gurgling, and had Aspiration Pneumonia. So much happened on top of everything but only allowed so many characters to type this review. My brother lived on his own, was 44 yrs old, & a Military Veteran. The Neuro replaced the Shunt on the right side, after not being properly monitored, my brother was discharged only a very few days after Shunt was placed. I was making phone calls, discussing my ignored concerns of my brothers irregular behaviors and got no response, he was transferred for the 2nd time to KRH. So much going on, still being ignored for almost a month, told NOT to bring to hospital.,unless vomiting, headache, nausea, has none of these symptoms he becomes unresponsive, is lifeflighted a 2nd time to Stormont where a huge portion of the staff is incredibly rude and their behaviors are unnecessary and unneeded & so many lies!! Turns out the Shunt had malfunctioned due to abdominal scarring caused by Neurosurgeonwas unable to drain the Hydrocephalus this entire time and my brother had developed brain damage and can no longer remember anything, needs 24/7 supervision, assistance with showers, incontenance, balance is extremely off. Took case to 5 lawyers stated we strongly had a definite lawsuit BUT since my brother was unemployed & had 100% Veteran Medical Coverage along with the KS Medical Malpractice cap it wouldn't be feasible for any of them to take the case. A huge portion of the staff, saw the drastic changes in my brother thru all 3 times in the hospital, and from the very 1st day so many staff members stated switch Neurosurgeons. When the good staff, which isn't as many as the bad staff are this vocal & verify they truly care and have complete empathy towards but are extremely vocal at discussing with you the emphasis to change Drs that looking back spoke volumes and I wish I knew then what I've experienced with my brother and the enormous amount of comas and suffering he endured as a total of over 67 days all together. Changing Drs wasn't easy at all, I truly know they are NOT honest. My brothers Shunt never needed to be messed with,all together the VA Hospital paid definitely over $2 Milliion for everything. I kept coming home watching their bill online go up, daily, I took daily notes, which they DO NOT LIKE,! Next, My husband had to come back multiple times for surgery over 1 Kidney Stone, due to NOT again, resolving the issue the 1st time. And I in the last month had a Mammogram done with no proof, but was told I needed to do another Mammogram due to thinking they saw something, wasn't given a choice an had to do the 3D Mammogram. I get the bill & Darla states that out of the $251.00, bill, $157, was for having to redo the Mammogram. With heartless, rudeness she stated with my concerns with Stormont she would've thought I should not have come back, I stated my brothers needs was a Neuros, my husband a Urologist, and mine a Mammogram and each one we all have had to pay an insane amount of $$ extra because no one took care or thoroughly did their jobs the 1st time! My brother still had to pay @ $25,000 out of pocket for bills the VA did not pay, unfair since his Shunt had no business being removed plus all the suffering....feeding tube, collapsed lung, he endured more then he ever needed. The main hospital staff had no cares, no apology, just rude and heartless. I now have my life taken away to care for my brother. No one is truly safe here, I will gladly verify all of this!! Stormont knows this is all truthful!! The other Neuro was very thorough and helpful in the Medical Records! They only care about $$! I feel they are having to redo things as a scam!! The staff at this institution will prescribe tranquilizer-like drugs to you if you do not agree with them on certain political matters. I spoke with one doctor about gay marriage and she prescribed seroquel for me that evening. Seroquel is a drug that is commonly given to violent jail inmates. She said that I was manic (when in fact I had been called suicidal and depressed one to two days before). Another doctor said that I was psychotic because I told him it'd be cool if there were a real jurassic park. I spoke with at least five different nurse practitioners / doctors during my six day stay. I signed the release to form on the first day (to be released on the 3rd day after my arrival) and I was not released until day six. I was not given any examples of my manic, bipolar, grandiose, or erratic behavior. I said, "please tell me how I am behaving so that I may be conscious of it and possibly prevent a future 'episode'". I was only given an example of my psychotic behavior - the dinos. Do not go here unless you want to have less of an appreciation for humanity. read more

My problem wasn't as serious as many. I fell off a ladder and broke both legs. From the time the security guard helped me out of my car into the emergency room, to the clerks who checked me in, to the great nurses who really seemed to care that I was comfortable, to the X-ray department, and doctors they really took good care of me. The ward nurses were great and the social worker/case worker was very helpful. I wish I had known about the bowel problems with heavy duty pain relievers though. Thought that would kill me. I received a statement for a procedure dated March 6, 2018 with a due date of March 27, 2018. The statement was paid on March 17, 2018 with the check clearing my bank on March 22. On March 29, I received a collection notice dated March 23. I contacted Stormont on 4/2 asking why this occurred and was told the account was sent for collection two days before the payment was received with collection efforts since cancelled. I questioned why an account was sent to collections prior to the due date printed on the statement and was told this appeared to be an error. Customer service supervisor was not in today to explain how this happened. These types of errors can impact credit rating and need to be addressed. read more
