I was sad that my first visit here was not a good one. I have passed this store for years, my best friend has lived on Mass Ave for 5+ years and I frequently eat in the area. Three friends and I were taking a walk down Mass Ave when the strap on my friend's shoe broke. I offered to go to my car and grab and extra pair, but Stout's was near and we heard they had a good selection. The four of us walked into the store and proceeded to slowly walk towards where we thought sandals might be located. There were two employees huddled around the cash register that just looked at us and turned back around to finish their conversation. They glanced over more than once without acknowledging us, even though it was evident we were in search of something. They only spoke to us when she approached them to ask about possible repair to the shoe she had on. We all wanted to leave. She only decided to make a purchase so she didn't delay our dinner plans. Ashley Zachary at Stout's is wonderful! I strolled in on a rainy day just to browse for some practical flats, which turned into flats plus an irresistible pair of colorful heels. I always assumed I couldn't afford Stout's for some reason, but after my visit I have realized that is not true. My flats were the exact same price as I had seen on Amazon and Carson's. The nice thing about Stouts is the sales people know their shoes and can provide helpful suggestions and details about shoes (i.e. where their made, materials used, and design benefits). I've bought a lot of shoes here. The quality of employee knowledge has declined tremendously. I had to return 3 times to get the right size shoes. First employee measured my feet and said I needed an 11 1/2. I usually wear 10 1/2. Tried them on and was walking out of them. Then, she ordered me a size 11 from another store. Didn't fit. Arrived after a few days. Finally ordered a 10 1/2 from another store. Went in and tried them on. All good until check out. Employee couldn't figure out how to credit other shoes. Wow, what an ordeal. I like their selection of shoes...Ecco, Clark, etc. Good quality, but purchasing them is difficult. read more

I could say the last time I was here was to only look at the shoes. But that would be a lie. I came for the whole experience. Stout's is one store that is both a throwback and one that stays current at the same time. I was travelling in the area and needed a pair of shoes to both look good and to survive the chill. I'm a sucker for established businesses with an old feel and service. Yelp and Google pointed me to Stout's. Service was great and soon had a pair of Clark's on my feet to try out. I ended up walking out in those shoes. But not before wandering around the building another half out looking at the architecture and mechanics of the place. Stout's still has one of those old basket systems you see in the silent and silverscreen eras use for cash and paperwork transport. The cool thing is it still works. Stout's Shoes offers a great selection of shoes at an "OK" price. Sometimes you'll find shoes are less expensive here than at the mall, but other times they're more expensive. It's good to shop around. My husband had trouble with a pair of Merrill shoes he bought at Stout's, and they took them back and replaced them with no questions. Very good customer service. It's fun to go in the store to shop, but it's also a great piece of history in downtown Indy. Stout's has been around more than 100 years! read more

Stout's Shoe Store is an Indianapolis gem. This is how shoe shopping should be done. They lace up the shoes for you, help you take off your old shoes and put on the new ones. Customer services is outstanding. My parents first brought me to Stout's when I was a kid and I always remembered the bird. They still have a bird and makes it part of the fun experience. If they don't have your size or if you are looking for something they do not have, they will order it for you. I have purchased two special order shoes this way and didn't have to pay extra for it. The Stout's customer is the type of person who recognizes what a waste of money it is to buy an interior shoe--such as those sold at Payless, Shoe Carnival, and similar budget stores. My husband and I wandered in 5 years ago just to see the store we had heard about for years. My feet were hurting bad, my hip was hurting, and I was wearing "cute" sandals that had no support at all. Stephanie approached us and was VERY helpful. She listened to me and took the time to fit me properly. Her shoe suggestions were perfect and I never felt pressured to buy. I had not only been wearing shoes 1/2 size too small, but I had been wearing ones that were really bad for my feet and total body alignment. I left there with three pairs of shoes and have continued to go back about 3 times a year for more shoes. My feet and sore hip never felt better! Over time, I have replaced all of my shoes that were bad for me (cute, but no support and uncomfortable) and only wear shoes I call "Stephanie approved!" They fit properly, are the correct size, and are VERY comfortable. I was under the impression that "good shoes" could not be stylish but I was wrong! Stephanie will work with you until you find the perfect pair, even if you have to try on 9 or 10 pair to do so! She will also order from the shoe company or ship from another one of Stout's locations if necessary. My husband buys shoes there now, too. I have never had a bad experience there and customer service has always been top notch. Parking can be a real problem on Mass Ave but, there is a small parking lot directly behind the store that has free parking and is only for Stout's customers. We happened to wander in Saturday morning because my husband needed new dress shoes. This is one of those places we'd always been aware of but just hadn't made it in. My husband has kind of big feet, in the size range where you typically have one option at department stores so we thought this would be worth a shot. They measured him, determined that maybe he would be more comfortable in a wide and brought back 3 options. He got what he needed and we were very pleased with the friendly service. This is an old family business with lots of unique touches. We probably spent a little more but we had a very good experience and got exactly what we were looking for. This was exactly what I hoped for when I went to Stout's. I had to pick up new shoes that would work with inserts. Two criteria had to be met. First, a pair for clinic that are comfortable enough to stand in for several hours and look decent with scrubs. Second, a dress pair that look decent with dresses or slacks. If you go to Stout's expect to pay more because the shoe selection is high end. With this in mind I wanted to focus on versatility and have assistance from start to finish with the inserts. No costly $100+ hasty mistakes to gather dust in my closet! I was greeted upon entering. Explained what I was looking for, what I thought was my size and color preference and had a seat. I found a gorgeous pair of patent leather shoes on clearance. Luckily, they were in my size. I asked that the insoles be removed and try on with the insert. No worries. My salesman had experience and handled in short order. I also loved a pair of flats but he gave me tips on why certain shoes will not work and what to look for. This was much appreciated as it helps me when I'm viewing online, etc. I spent a bit more on the Dansko XP than I normally spend but I've worn a few days and they are worth every penny. I compared prices once home and found both shoes online and the Stout's price was 1$ cheaper on each pair. I will definitely return in the future as the customer service was heads above what I experience in most stores. Also, the recommendations helped me to make purchases that I'm extremely satisfied with after wearing in the real world. read more

What an amazing surprise to be walking down Mass Ave as a tourist and to stumble across this store. Normally, something called the oldest shoe store in America might be a reason not to go into a store, as it could conjure up images of a stuffy store with limited selection. Like, wow. Stout's is the opposite of that image. WIth amazing selection and the living history of the basket pulleys, I just had to buy my shoes there. Stouts carries some quality shoes & has hard to find sizes. That being said, it's difficult enough finding shoes for bad feet but when the sales clerk acts like he's doing you a favor it makes you want to run out the door. He converted a size wrong (really???) and he told me there are no hiking type boots that are comfortable. Basically he tried to railroad me into buying a shoe that hurt my feet....and was rude about it. The store had a parrot that is loose! I went with my children of 5 and 9 who were obviously drawn to the parrot. The store clerk did not tell us that the parrot was mean until AFTER it had already bitten threw my thumb and caused me extreme pain and tremendous bleeding. A pet in the store is fine but if yoy know it can be violent then it should not be present or should be locked up! I did not see warning signs about the parrot until it was too late!!! I don't find Stout's to be as fabulous as everyone else. Upon entering the store I was greeted by someone, but he didn't help me in any other way. He later told another customer that he couldn't help them, but he'd find someone that could. In the meantime I'm still looking for someone to find a hiking shoe in my size. Finally, a lady jumps in (she's already assisting a woman and fitting her with 4 pairs of shoes). She finds someone else to assist, I was fitted and tried on a few pair. I ended up purchasing a pair of shoes, but wasn't entirely content (overpriced, not a boot, etc) but was going to give them a try. After finding a boot that I wanted elsewhere I returned the purchase today. Loren was less than friendly about the return: He said "size" I said "10", "No, I meant was it a size issue?" Well why didn't you ask that? I told him I found a pair of boots which was what I was looking for in the first place. Ends up, they had just gotten a pair in - why didn't somebody tell me they had boots on order and set to arrive within a week when I purchased? I was very clear I preferred a boot at the time of purchase. Anyway, I handed him my credit card and he tossed it back (it nearly slid off the counter to the floor). He then tossed both the receipt and the return receipt at me and didn't say another word. I'm not sure what his problem was, but obviously something had set him off. And I was entirely friendly, no reason not to be - just a simple return. My overall view of the store, decent selection of comfort shoes, overpriced (history is always expensive), questionable staff. My wife and I have searched around Indianapolis for shoes that would fit our son. He has especially wide feet and even specialty stores have not been able to help us. She worked with us for over an hour until we found a pair that worked for him. What a fine person she is! Patient, helpful, and professional are all words that describe her. I wear a 13EEEE and this is the only store I have EVER been in that I actually had several styles to choose from. As for the man that got bit by the parrot. He was there a long time before you were and if you stuck your finger that close to an animal you never met before you deserved to get bit. Common sense would tell you that a parrot that large can bite a finger OFF and therefore caution should be exercised. read more
