This (January-February, 2024) makes my fourth excellent experience with Danny Shoemaker and his staff & referral colleagues at Straight Frets. This time it was a semi-vintage Martin Pegasus that took me almost a year to find. The setup and relatively minor repairs to frets, bridge and body took a couple of months--they're busy, and different experts were involved--but when it came back my go-to blues guitar looked and played absolutely beautifully. As I've said before, the shop (now in a different location, on South Congress) is very trustworthy with valuable instruments; estimate are fair and adhered to, and they never push to do more than is needed. I drive 1-1/2 hours each way to bring my instruments to him, and will continue to do so. read more

I decided to take up classical guitar and bought a Vicente Carrillo. Beautiful guitar but the strings just didn't sound right. Since I'm a fairly new student, I wanted an experienced person to analyze the guitar and let me know if it was me, or the guitar. I decided to pay Danny at Straight Frets a visit and I can't say enough good things about him and the business. First, Danny treated me to a "mini-concert" as he picked up my guitar and gave it a go. Half my experience was sitting back and enjoying his guitar skills. He promptly deduced what the needed to have done which was to run it through his Pleck machine which worked the frets to the correct height. He also worked out some issues on the bridge, filing it to a better height bringing my strings down to a tighter, narrower clearance. My guitar also does not have, nor did I want, position marks along the fret board. As I was learning, Danny suggested he drill and inset 2 dots marking the 5th and 7th frets inconspicuously placed along the side of the guitar's neck. They did a beautiful job on the guitar and with the lower clearance, it feels like I'm not getting a huge workout playing any longer. The notes are clear and I'm very happy. I'm sure there are great luthiers in Austin but I still highly recommend Danny at Straight Frets. Honest, straight forward, knowledgeable, be it classical, flamenco or electric. read more

After having been told by another shop it would be 6 weeks before they could even look at it a good friend of mine recommended I take a new mod shop fender strat I ordered to Danny that absolutely would not tune. Danny told me to bring it on in. He took a look at it and told me a setup and a bone pleked nut should take care of it. In less that a week I had it back and it played perfectly. I was so impressed that I took him 2 other guitars. A 77 Les Paul I bought new and a Martin acoustic I have had for several years. I bought a parts-caster on Craigslist that was advertised as a stock "like new" MIM Strat (I know, dumb!). It was poorly set up and generally unpleasant to play. Rather than cut my losses, I thought I'd try to get the guitar properly squared away. I took it to Straight Frets to be Plek'd and set up, in addition to having a new nut, tuners and triple-tree installed. I couldn't believe the difference. The guitar feels and sounds amazing. Bought a Martin acoustic a few months ago and took it into a chain guitar store for a setup. After I got it back, it still didn't play as well as I thought it should. The action was higher than when I gave it to them and the intonation was off. Finally, I'd had enough and took it into Straight Frets. They quoted me 1 1/2 weeks which was acceptable, but I got it back in half that time! But the most important part is that it now plays beautifully. The action and intonation problems are gone. I talked to the tech who said the neck was not properly adjusted and both the nut and saddle were too high. It makes me wonder what the other tech did the first setup. Lesson learned - I also paid less for the work being done well than I did for whatever was done at the chain store. read more

I never know what to expect going to a new guitar shop after moving from my regular luthier. Especially with all the hype Straight Frets gets, but they hype is real and the customer service was really great! I was helped right away and my guitar was inspected for what I wanted. I brought it in to be re-wired and had all the parts with me. I was counseled to return them, because I had good pots already installed into the guitar and it would save me money. I also wanted to put in some new pick ups and my guitar was modded before I bought it and I was showed what the mod did. For that I was very thankful for. I wasn't up selled or forced to buy anything more than I needed, I was shown what their set up process was and how I could benefit from it, I decided to get that done and I'm glad I did. My guitar was done in the timeframe I was given and I'm still happy with it. I'll be back in the future and I'm thankful to have a new set of luthiers to come to in Austin. read more

I needed quite a lot of work on my 10 year old Gibson Acoustic guitar (Songmaker DSM-CE for anyone curious). The neck had a large bend in it, which required an adjustment of the truss rod and some serious work on the frets to get the action to a more reasonable level and bring the guitar back in tune. Additionally the nut needed to be replaced and the bridge needed serious adjustment to go along with the fret alignment. It was clear that the guitar needed a lot of work. When I brought it in to Danny he gave me the facts straight up, without any judgement for letting the guitar get into such bad shape. He answered all of my silly and detailed questions, and it was very clear early on that he is a man who is passionate about his line of work. Despite the fact that this guitar essentially needed an entire overhaul and that his house was FULL of other guitars being serviced, it was ready to be picked up in 3 days time (including Sunday!). I am SO impressed with the quality of work done. My guitar is back to life and playing better than I can remember. Again, after the job was done Danny took me through every step of the process that he and his assistant took to revive my baby (which required even more work than initially estimated...), answering all the small questions on the way, and giving advice on future maintenance etc. All in all, I really can't say enough about how impressed I am with the work they did. Without hesitation I will recommend him to all of my guitar playing friends and I will take any future guitar issue to these guys. One final note: They have a Plek machine to adjust the fret height and get the notches in the nut accurate to 1/1000". While a good luthier such as Danny would be able to get those frets and nut done well, I recommend paying a little extra to get this done using that Plek machine. Like I said, my guitar is playing just beautifully afterward and I think it was worth it. Of course, Danny happily explained how the machine worked and showed me exactly what it would do. He even sent videos of my guitar getting serviced, which I think is very cool to see. read more

My guitar wasn't staying in tune, and I attempted to restring it myself which made it worse. I brought my guitar in, and Jason restrung it & showed me what I did wrong and how to do it correctly. He really didn't have to do all of that, but I appreciated it so much! I'll definitely be back at some point to upgrade the nut, and I'll definitely recommend this place to anyone. I hate to be the only bad review, and I must assume the way I was treated was not typical of Danny's work. However, I do think I need to leave a review. The bottom line is that he was too busy to get my work done in a timely manner, admitted he forgot about it, treated me like a second-class customer, and offered arrogant non-apology apologies for things he should have taken more responsibility for. I would have preferred that he simply told me he didn't have time to do it. Then I could have taken my instruments somewhere else and perhaps gotten them done sooner. Then I might consider giving him more work in the future (which I need for some other instruments). I brought him 3 instruments, 2 that needed major work, at the beginning of March - my gigging oud (minor work), my backup oud and my only guitar (both of which had broken headstocks). I usually work as a violinist, but regularly use my guitar as a composer and for the occasional gig. However, I told him at the beginning that there was not a huge rush (other than on the gigging oud), to which he responded that it should take him no longer than a month to 6 weeks - mid-April - to do the headstock work, but that he could get to the gigging oud done quickly (which he did and I picked up in a few days - which is why I gave 2 stars instead of one). On the others, after 2 months I started calling him, left messages, he never called me back. I finally tracked him down on facebook and asked if the work was done. It wasn't. After 3 months, he started pressuring me to go in to pick up my instruments because he was almost done with them and they were taking up space he needed because he had so much work. Through our conversation, however, which included a lot of long ramblings from him about how busy and how in demand he is and trying to explain to me why he was so busy, I come to find out that he was planning on handing me an unfinished job: an oud with no nut. (In other words, unplayable.) That's what set me off. I can be patient and understanding if a job takes a bit longer, but then to start pressuring me to pick up the instruments because he needs the space for all the other clients that are a higher priority without having finished the job he's agreed to do, and after it has already taken twice as long as expected, was too much. He then made things worse by making more excuses, emphasizing how important his other clients were, and admitted that he had put the instrument in a closet for a few weeks and forgotten about it. Then he tells me how difficult the company (Godin) was to deal with, and that that's why the job wouldn't be finished. And he just kept talking and writing long messages to me in this vein. Cut to chase: he did indeed finish the job more than a month later (mid-July), but I couldn't pick it up until 2 weeks later because I was traveling at the time that he called. Before I went to pick up the instruments, he quoted me a price (which was full price.) We agreed to meet at his place at 11am, and admittedly I did not get there until 11:45. When I got there, he proceeded to lecture me about punctuality, and how he had learned early in his career how important punctuality was, like I'm some kind of rookie musician or something. Of course, I thought I was just picking up and paying for the instruments, but apparently there was more work that needed to be done, which he did in front of me. Then, he tells me that he has to charge me $50 more than the price he quoted me because, he was just realizing, Godin had overcharged him. He said he would refund me that $50 once he got it from Godin. When I expressed my annoyance at having to pay more than I was quoted, he started again with excuses - why should he eat that cost? Which makes sense, but couldn't he have figured that out in the 2 weeks between when he said the instruments were ready and he quoted me the price? When I told him I wasn't happy, he talked about how he was "a little bit late" with the job because "frankly" he has clients that are a "higher priority." I mean, why would he open his mouth and say things like that, to any client? He acted as if he had been doing me a favor, as if he was offering me a discount or something. He then tells me that I didn't need the instruments as badly as his other clients, who come from far and wide, needed theirs urgently, like Bob Dylan, and other name-dropping, and how popular he is, etc. It felt like I was being talked down to. As for the work, it was fine. His customer relations soured the whole experience for me. As I said, I wish he'd just told me he didn't have time so that I could have taken it somewhere else instead of it being forgotten in his closet - or that he hadn't tried to give me an unfinished job after 3 months of waiting. I think, based on how others talk about him, that my treatment was atypical. Too bad. I have 2 other instruments that need work, but I won't bring them to him. But, as he made clear, he doesn't need my work. read more

I shipped this guy my guitar ['69 Strat] in a Calzone road case. Case had no locks, so to protect [from theft] during shipment, I put 5 bicycle locks over the case. He calls me crying, that he can't open the locks, that this is big trouble for him. Besides, he said that I had violated his rule which commands the customer to ship the guitar in a "Taylor box." with "bubble wrap, not peanuts." He's frantic. Starts telling me that he has a Master's Degree in Classical Guitar[?]. I told him to just ship the guitar back to me and forget it. Any person that cannot open a combination padlock, I don't want working on my guitar. No matter how good his fretwork may be. Or what kind of degrees he has. The dude is a psychotic crybaby. Oh! And he wanted me to pay him $ 25.00 for the time he spent struggling with the pad locks. read more

For anyone interested I took Danny 2005 MIM Tele for some fret leveling, which included pulling the "ski jump" down a tick, & general/basic setup. I also asked him to replace the stock pickups with some Fralin pickups I ordered that week after that the tone cap was replaced with an Orange Drop and pick guard screws were all replaced. He even filled some of the pick guard holes with glue and bamboo shims if they were stripped. The timing for everything worked out beautifully and these guys do top notch work. I have known Danny at Straightfrets for more than a year now. I took a Gibson Hummingbird to him in 2012 and he leveled and polished the frets, replaced the nut and saddle with Iboney material and did a fantastic set-up. The guitar plays like butter! The pickguard on this guitar was coming off and another well-known Austin luthier wanted $500 to replace the guard--Danny got the job done with the original guard for about $50. Since that first experience in 2012 Danny is the only person I have work on my guitars. He did extensive work on an Ibanez AM-205 (featured on his site), and currently is setting up another guitar for me. Danny has quick turnaround time, is honest, and has the tools and the skills to do professional work. His workshop is clean and organized and he knows his business. Danny is also an accomplished guitarist, with a master's degree in classical guitar. When I was picking up the Hummingbird I asked him about lessons and he gave me a 45 minute lesson on the spot free of charge. I was blown away and immediately signed up and have been taking lessons for more than a year. Danny is an excellent teacher and is so versatile that you can learn jazz, blues, rock, classical or whatever you like. He backs up the HOW with the WHY of music theory. He is a master. I have hired Danny Shoemaker at Straight Frets to repair and refurbish several of my instruments, and he has done a fantastic job each time. My first task was to repair a vintage 1950s Gibson lap steel. Amazingly, Danny was able to remove the original single-coil pickup and replace it with a modern humbucker without causing any damage to a very valuable vintage instrument. In fact, Danny was able to keep the original single coil pickup and wiring completely intact, which will enable me to re-install it if I ever want to re-sell this lap steel with all of the original vintage parts. For those who are not familiar with this type of luthier work, this is basically the guitar equivalent of having a kidney transplant, and it was an unqualified success. My next nearly-impossible task was to install a pickup on an open-back banjo that was not designed for open-backed banjos. With some clever woodworking, Danny somehow managed to retrofit this pickup for the banjo. I don't know of any other guitar repairman in town who could have pulled this off, but Danny was up for the challenge and did a great job. By far the most difficult project I assigned to Danny was to hot-rod an old strat by putting active and passive pickups in the same guitar, and have the ability to turn each individual pickup on and off with three light switches built into the guitar. There are no guitars on the market that have this configuration, and from an electronics standpoint, it's practically impossible to mix active and passive pickups. But Danny took on the challenge, and gave me his word that he would figure out a way to make it work. After a few weeks of tinkering, Danny called to tell me that after countless experiments, this project had completely stumped him and all of his employees, who are all top-notch guitar repairmen in their own right. Although Danny did not think it was theoretically possible to make this guitar come to life, he told me that he was going to bring in some outside electronics experts to come see if they had any recommendations. Danny paid for all of these experts out of his own pocket, and downright refused to let me pay for their labor. It took three different outside experts before the guitar became functional, but true to his word, Danny delivered to me a fully-functioning guitar. This project probably went at least 300% over budget, but Danny refused to let me pay anything over the original quote. It takes a man of tremendous integrity to do what Danny did. Not sure if Danny will want to take on any more of my crazy projects (!), but if he does, I know he will do a great job. He always does! read more

Over a year ago I took one of my basses to Danny for fretwork and a setup. This particular instrument was mangled by another shop, and 2 other repair shops in town told me it was hopeless (one even suggested hanging in on my wall as art!) so Danny was basically my last resort. He kept it for a week, and when I picked it up it was pretty much perfect! I mean, I couldn't believe how well it played, and it quickly became my go-to bass. Since then he has worked on several of my basses, ranging from simple setups to some pretty significant repairs and fret work. I am always happy with the results - he does great work, and his prices are so reasonable I always feel like giving him extra. Shout out to Danny Shoemaker and his team at Straight Frets. They did a great job of giving my bass guitar new life. True Story - Purchased this Hamer Bass in 1996 and believe it or not, on the first day I was going to a rehearsal with it, I set it behind my car while loading, forgot it was there, and I actually backed over the hard case....bump. Right over the neck. Then I panicked, put it in drive and ran over it again! (Undo -Doh!) Anyway, remarkably the hard case was crushed, but the neck was not broken, but it did have some minor intonation problems that I just adjusted, too. I had it adjusted a few times, but they could only do so much. Danny told me about the amazing PLEK machine and I thought...hey, let's see what it can do. Fingerboard planing and re-radius, re-fretted, Frets Plek'd and nut cut on Plek Machine: I bought a cheap used Fender '72 Tele Custom Reissue, and had the neck scanned at Straight Frets on their Plek Machine. The neck had a pretty major hump from frets 8-11, and I was considering going to a flatter radius and big frets anyway, so they pulled the frets, and planed the fretboard on the Plek Machine, changing the 7.25 radius to a 9.5/10 compound radius. Then put in some nice jumbo frets and leveled them with the Plek Machine to an accuracy less than a human hair! Finally they cut a new bone but with the Plek, working off the scan of the new frets so it would work perfectly with the neck as it is. The guitar plays amazing, all over the neck. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable, and the turnaround was quick! I'd recommend Straight Frets for all your guitar repair needs. read more

Sept. 2017: I'm a pro level player playing for over 50 years. I continue to play weekly. I have a heavy attack. I've had many a luthier work on my instruments in the various places I've lived. 3 weeks ago I had a fret dressing done by a very well known luthier in town. Cost was over $400. It had more relief than I like and after raising the action to what is playable for me, (I've arthritis in my thumb base joint so a lot of chording can cause a problem) most of the buzzing was acceptable - except above the 12th. I wasn't happy. The last guitar I had done by him was perfect. I didn't have to adjust the action, the relief was great, so I expected that he'd done his best job on this guitar, too. I remembered reading about a plek machine, looked it up, saw Danny's reviews. I figured this is a perfect opportunity to match man and machine. What do I have to lose? Sure, a couple of hundred bucks, but I'd know for sure where to bring my guitars in the future. Danny put my guitar up on the plek machine and showed me string by string where the high spots were. I looked at the first string and saw for myself where it was buzzing the worst above 15. Was I nervous? Sure. Was it warranted? I'm happy to say, NO! I'm also happy to tell you this is absolutely the most evenly dressed guitar I've ever played. If it buzzes because of my heavy attack and required low action, it buzzes everywhere the same amount. The neck relief is almost nil, just the way I like it. Danny has earned my future business. In the world of frets the Plek rules. Thanks, Danny. I'll play easier and sound better. I look forward to bringing the next one over. Oh, the cost including setup? $200. I could have had 2 guitars done for the price of one. Oct. 2017, 2 weeks later. Guitar #2: Had a PRS P-22 Pleked. It, too, came out far better than it ever was. Same deal that all the notes above 12th now have very good sustain, fullness and clarity. Am very happy as this is one of my 2 stage guitars. Guitar #3: At the same time, I had Danny get another PRS ready for sale. It had buckle rash, one of which I thought was down to the wood. The back came out looking like it was new. There was a ding down to the wood right on the pointed edge that he fixed and is barely noticeable. He cleaned up all the frets without doing a full on dressing and they looked great. He also lifted the nut less than 1mm because of a buzz on 1 string at the first fret and buffed out all the micro scratches on the top. Great work. He really cares about what he does. Nov. 2017, Guitar #4: Taylor 714CE This guitar is setup for open D tuning for solo instrumentals - lots of open strings droning against double and triple stops up the neck. The intonation was out. The saddle and nuts were also too low since it's tuned down from standard tuning. He made a bone nut and saddle. Beautiful work. One string was still a bit out up the neck and he tweaked that one string position on the saddle. There was a bit of bottoming out above the 12th fret. He took those frets down a hair and now the entire guitar is dialed in for the way I play. He has a great ear, and yes, I keep sort of gushing, but I am thrilled at finding someone who does such exacting work. We, well, speaking for myself, I have always sort of put up with stuff on my guitars and I guess I never really understood just what's possible with an instrument. Danny helped me see that and ultimately, that makes me enjoy playing all the more. Jan. 2018 - Bought a Taylor 412CE Ltd., ovankol/sitka, 12 fret, grand concert (small body). It didn't play well above 12 as there was a hump in the neck where it joined the body along with a dip around the 9th. I didn't realize the neck was so bad until Danny pointed a number of issues. I really didn't have the cash to have it pleked, but I had to be in the studio and needed above 12th so I went for it. I'm glad I did. I also had a bone saddle put in giving clarity, punch and volume which was sorely needed because of the small body. Danny has always taken the time to get it right for me. He knows I don't like relief in the neck and that I like the action a whisker away from buzzes. He's gotten each of my guitars spot on. I'm a long time, pretty serious guitar player with a stable of pretty legit guitars. I brought 2 Gibson Historic Les Pauls to Danny & Straight Frets for fret work, based on his growing reputation for quality work in town. One was a total refret & new bone nut, the other a fret dress/re-crown and a finish touch up spot. I can say with the utmost confidence that the quality of Danny & team's fret work is as good or better than any I've experienced. I gambled on him bringing my two most expensive guitars to him, without having prior first hand experience with his work. But I tell, I regret nothing. Both guitars turned out PHENOMENAL. The bill was not cheap - if paying the lowest possible price is what you're after, Straight Frets might not be your place - but you definitely get what you pay for. Some minor areas for improvement: 1. They don't take credit cards 2. They seem really disorganized - we talked on the phone several times and I had to remind Danny of some of the details of the work I wanted done, 3. Even though I told him many times I was in no hurry, Danny insisted my guitars would be done weeks before they actually were (overpromise/underdeliver type scenario). Overall, I'm shelling out 5 stars because Danny is a really nice guy that does absolutely pro quality work. I will definitely be back. read more

Had frets redone on my fav tele. The work was awesome and done quickly. Plenty of time was spent with me to make sure I was happy with the way it turned out, that was really appreciated! Danny and his crew are as good as it gets. I've never written a yelp review but these guys deserve recognition. I took in my old yamaha sbg 500 for a nut replacement and what I got was more than I asked for. They fixed the action, aged the nut, polished her down and now it sounds better than I could have imagined. It's been in bad shape for years, the strings would buzz at the top of the neck and it couldn't stay in tune. Not no more yawl! He told me it would take 2 weeks but I don't think it's even been a week. Don't go anywhere to get your guitar worked on. This is your guy. read more
