The downright best luthier/repair artist I've ever had. He's usually got a bit of a backlog (I mean, the secret is out at this point) but it's worth every week you need to wait. Other's have already said it, I'm just here to concur. Jon always goes above and beyond. Had an 80's explorer that needed an overhaul on the neck and a refret job, as well as wiring replaced for some new pickups. He did it all and threw in some new switches and tuners for free b/c he noticed the old ones were jank. Next time I took my new 7 string to get the guts removed and install some BareKnuckles, which he needed to carve some space in the body in order for them to fit (you'd never know, it looks like it was built for them) and then custom rigged the pickups to make use of the push/pull tone knob to use the previous pickup's passive battery as a gain boost, a la tubescreamer, but built right into the guitar itself! I had a new acoustic bass with high action, unplayable past the 5th position. Had an appointment with Dr. Jon today. No problem scheduling. I found Dr. Jon friendly and welcoming. He took one look at the bass and diagnoised the problem; the neck needed a truss rod adjustment. He adjusted it immediately and my bass now plays wonderfully. Value (fee) was more than fair. I can't say enough good things about Dr Jon. He was able to squeeze me in during a busy time, and his work was stellar. He took what I thought was a junk guitar and made it sound beautiful, function like new, and play like a dream. Thank you, Dr Jon! Update: I wanted to add a bit more detail after playing with the guitar for about a week after all of Dr Jon's work. I went to him for a simple set up on an old Ibanez hollow body electric in a flimsy, water-damaged case. I don't think I'd plugged the guitar into an amp for a decade, and it had never sounded good or played well. Dr Jon did the setup, but he also fixed, cleaned, or replaced the electronics. While he was working on it, he called about the frets needing some work and told me about some damage to the neck--warping, twisting. I assumed fixing the neck would be out of my budget, so I just thought, well, I can live with a better bad guitar and agreed to the refret. When I picked it up, he had not only refretted it, but he had reshaped the fretboard to a perfect curve, taking out the twist and even (somehow!) adding some patina back into the fretboard so it didn't look new and out of place. He did all of this for the budget we'd agreed to. He really went above and beyond my expectations. I had planned to fix up a bad guitar and maybe sell it. Instead, I have a fantastic guitar that I actually play... and I bought a new case. read more

I was playing a show when my strap fell off. Come to find out the screw just fell right out. I decided to get a push pull knob fixed on it, so I took it to Dr Jon. He was easy to reach, responsive, and friendly. Got me in quick, did the work quickly and for a very fair price. I can honestly say my guitar plays and sounds like new, which is no small task since it's been my main guitar for 25 years. He knocked it out of the park. Jon is my go to guy whenever I have an issue with any of my instruments. Today I brought in a Martin ukulele that was very difficult to play. My fingers would dig into the strings while strumming at the most inconvient time. Jon quickly diagnosed the issue as the action being too high at the saddle. He fixed it in just a few minutes. Jon found some bad work that had been previously done on my Thunderbird electronics and got it back to factory condition and it sounds fantastic! Also, after I had it home for a few days, he was totally cool about me taking it back because I thought it might need a tweak.. and it didn't because it turned out the issue I was having had to do with my rig and not the bass. Fair warning, this is not a review on his capacity as a repair technician. Customer service, however, is an essential part of any business. Because of this, I gave him three stars instead of two, allowing for the possibility that he might have done quality work. His customer service, however, would rate far lower. Essentially, my experience was brief, but it was enough to leave me just a little bit frustrated, in that I didn't even get to the point of discussing my guitar with him. His communication was terse and borderline unfriendly, and he gave the distinct impression that he was doing me a favor by making time to look at my guitar. Attempting to make an appointment was made awkward because of his stand-offish manner, and ultimately led me to cancel, because I didn't feel like we would have a good enough report for me to actually want to leave my 3000 dollar guitar with him. Thankfully Austin has a number of highly skilled guitar technicians, so I decided I would pursue a different vendor with whom I would feel more comfortable with. read more

The bridge on my husband's Hofner guitar had broken off years ago and I decided to surprise my husband and get it fixed while he was out of town. I brought an 08' American Standard Strat to Jon to have him refret the guitar with Stainless Steel frets. He was very quick to respond to me and was very thorough with his questions. He made sure he was providing a personalized service and wanted to make sure the work met with my specifications. His prices are more than reasonable. Considering I wanted Stainless steel and I have a lacquered fret board his asking price was exceptional. Turn around time was also phenomenal. Found the doctor here on Yelp. I brought him a made-in-China strat copy with a scalloped fretboard since the neck was in horrible shape due to uneven fret heights up and down the neck. Jon did a complete fret job for me, leveling, crowning and polishing. He also installed a new bone nut. Couldn't be happier with the results. Great guy to work with. He spent lots of time with me answering questions, showing me his workshop (he works out of his home), explaining the work he would be doing. Great price too!
