The crook allegations are legit. I didn't read the reviews before going and I wish I did. I'm from out of state and needed an oil change so schedule a visit here, normally $250-300 for the service at most mechanics. My mistake not asking for the up front cost, as they dumped a $650 bill on me. After I reviewed the bill I found they tacked on $26 to refill my DEF, which I had done a week before (~300 miles) bringing my van in. $26 for maybe a quarter gallon of DEF... Did they fix my car? Yes. Are they crooks... also, yes. I had my 2017 Kia Niro repaired by Straightaway recently (mouse chewed some wiring). I waited 2 weeks to get on their schedule, then had my car towed to their shop. I took them about a week and a half to fix my car and while it was there I asked them to perform an oil change. They didn't mention how much this service would be, nor did they ever check in with me about the repair to give me an estimate on the bill as the repair was in progress. The final bill was $1700 for the repair and $250 for the oil change! Let me repeat that as it is NOT a typo... $250 for an OIL CHANGE! My car takes 4 quarts of oil and and oil filter the size of a coke can. I've never paid more than $90 for an oil change for that Kia anywhere in town. When I confronted my contact "Travis" about this he justified the cost by trying to tell me that "It's not as easy at just draining the old oil out and putting the new oil in". Actually Travis, it is. "Also, we put in a new air filter and did an inspection" The car didn't need an air filter and I didn't ask for one. Also, I received no inspection report either written or verbal. Also, not asked for. Overall, they did the work, but they were not very transparent about their pricing and not communicative at all. If I could give negative stars, I would. Are they crooks... yes. I took my 2003 F150 to Straightaway recently. It started running rough. After about a week of having my truck, Travis called and said it would cost $1500 just to diagnose what was wrong with it. I said screw that!! I went and picked up my truck and he charged me $180+ and basically regurgitated what I had told him I already knew was wrong with it. A friend looked at my truck and had it figured out in less than an hour. Turns out, one of the plug wires had separated from where it goes into the coil. This dishonest, ripoff of a place wanted to charge $1500 JUST TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM!!! What a bunch of crooks!!! When I called Travis to ask him how he could justify the predatory pricing, he didn't have much to say except that he didn't even charge me the full price he should have! I wanted to get my Chevy 1500 front and rear differentials serviced (basic fluid switch out), don't have a regular mechanic so I thought I'd give these guys a try. Booked via web, scheduled the service, asked for an estimate via email. Was told "should be around $300 for front and rear service". Sounded high but probably to be expected for town these days. Went to pick up, -$450!- I understand the concept of an estimate, but don't generally see them a whopping 50% off. Considering they appear to use the standard shop book rates for billing, they could have been much closer. Kinda wishing I'd gone to a lube shop. Disappointing to say the least. My car started running rough, so I brought it to Straightaway Motors. They told me I had bent valves on cylinder six and needed a new engine, which they were willing to replace for $18,000 and change. I declined the work. They charged me about $250 for the diagnosis. I took it home and tested it myself to find the only problem was a broken valve spring, which I fixed myself for less than $100. I can't decide whether the diagnosis I got was due to dishonesty or incompetence, but, either way, I cannot bring myself to recommend this business. read more

The worst shop I have ever been to. I had to wait 4 weeks for an appointment to check the engine light on a sprinter. The day finally came where I could drop it off. 3 days later they told me they could plug it into the diagnostics and the system told them it needs a "software update". They could not do that today.... I picked up my vehicle the next day paying $150, and they really told me they would be happy to plug it in again after the weekend and see whether they can do the software upgrade. That would be another $150 and than they may know whether they can do the job!!!???? Not wearing a mask or providing any protection against covid rounded up the image of a totally unprofessional business. The staff is not in the business of repairing cars, but to rip their customers off I took the sprinter to Floyds - a fantastic shop with friendly staff, all know what they are doing and fair pricing. read more

If you ever need repair service and you have an out of state tag, DONT EVEN THINK OF GOING HERE. My son moved to Bozeman for a job with the city. Before being able to transfer his tags his car broke down. Aside from the 10 day wait to get it diagnosed, they wanted to charge 1900.00, yes nineteen HUNDRED, dollars for a battery and new radiator. AAA said it wasn't the battery, that service was another joke. Anyhow even for just a battery he was quoted 540.00. This is total SCAM AND DISHONEST TOWARD VISITORS. read more

This is the most inept, unprofessional and dishonest mechanic shop that I have ever had the misfortune of using. They told me that they could fix my car - and after charging me 130.00 for diagnosing what they thought was the problem they didn't have the part and it would be days before it came in. They misrepresented what was wrong with it - got it wrong and when I brought it to their attention that it wasn't the problem the owner shrugged - like - "too bad!" If your looking for honesty and competence - keep shopping - these guys are not it! read more

I had brought my BMW in for some repairs and they did a good job at first but then more and more problems started showing up. I kept on taking it to straightaway and the issue again would be fixed but more would show up. So finally I decided to take my car to another shop and they found a main part had been broken in the repair process at straightaway, which straightaway didn't tell me about and instead reinstalled it on the car. Straightaway also when replacing parts didn't replace other corresponding parts that where in need of repair which caused all the follow up visits. Needless to say I highly recommend people to avoid going to straightaway for repairs. read more

I am very happy with a repair of the speedometer and vacuum leak on my Audi. Bozeman Audi refused to diagnose the vacuum leak and estimated $2000 for the speedometer. Straightaway successfully diagnosed the vacuum leak and repaired it in 3 hours! I am elated. Then they recommended a electronics module rebuild that saved me 75% of what Bozeman Audi wanted to charge. I will absolutely use Straightaway motors again and recommend them to everyone. read more

My car is my baby. I know her vey well. Last year, after moving to Bozeman, I noticed the power steering pump was going out(a few weeks prior I had to replace the hose because of a leak, it must have damaged the pump before I got to replacing it). I called a dozen auto shops for an estimate, knowing the pump would cost around $350-$450, And it would only take about half an hour to do(understanding a vehicle repair shop would round up to an hour of labor). Every place said upwards of 700$. Straightaway motors was the last on my list and they estimated 425$ for the whole service, which ended up costing 415$. They didn't over charge, they didn't lie, they were helpful and friendly and I have now returned to them on multiple occasions, experiencing the same fantastic service EVERY TIME. I am from out of town. My car started acting off on the drive into bozeman, and I needed it looked at before I could travel back home. I called around to various car repair shops & was told the soonest I could get in was the afternoon or, shockingly, in a week. I called up Straightaway Motors with no previous reference with the hope that they could see me within a few hours. The guy on the phone was really friendly & said he'd take a look at my car as soon as he could, even though his day was swamped. I got to his shop 10 minutes later, he took it for a drive with me in the car, told me exactly what was wrong with it, said it didn't need adjusting, and didn't accept payment when I told him I'd love to pay for his time. As a young female who is used to car shops taking advantage of me, this locally-owned small business is a breath of fresh air. They aren't fancy, they look like a mom & pop shop, but they are good people who take care of you. I will come back to them any time I have car issues in Bozeman. read more
